Dense fruit on the nose though not giving up much expression. Lean feeling giving up some dark berry flavors. I'm guessing this was on the low oak end of the spectrum by the lean, clean character of the palate. Probably could use a little bit more bottle time. Nice.
Big dense fruit on the nose showing berries and pepper with signs of reduction. Dense fleshy fruit with juicy acids and strong tannin. A couple years in bottle will help this with the reduction and fleshy fruit though I don't think its for the long term.
90% Negrette/10% Syrah. Bretty nose with a note of pepper. Dense, tannic and reductive. A strong, lovely finish. This looks to have very good potential but needs some sleep.
Nose of fresh blackberries. Bright and clean palate, even with a bit of tannin. There is a late note of pepper as well. Something like a nice Beaujolais.
Big sharp nose like a Sherry. Lean feeling with acidity that brings a strong fresh quality. Notes of nuts on the finish. Very nice though I would only recommend this to people who like Sherry, etc.
France, Loire Valley, Pays Nantais, Vin de Pays Nantais
Sweet fruited nose. Grassy palate with a round middle leaving the finish not very defined. Suffering from 2009 or made for a new world audience or both.
This sees no wood. Pretty, floral nose. Tight and lean showing strong acidity and light tannin. There is some reduction showing on the palate but I really liked this. Seems the 09 Chinons show a nice freshness.
From 40% Grenache and 60% Cinsault. Brightly fruited nose. Like in expression on the palate and almost tannic suggesting maybe some extra skin contact. Decent.
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Blackberries on the nose but only faintly. Juicy palate with lots of dark berry qualities. Not in the rustic mode but not very modern either. Better acid than the basic bottling.
Notes of green fruit and what seems like American oak. Wondering if there is heavy stem inclusion. Lean feeling with juicy fruits and strong tannin. This needs a few years.
Big nose showing violets. Tannic and concentrated with the fruit showing very ripe at the finish. This also needs some bottle time though the ripeness of the fruit may be worrisome for the long term.
Spearmint leaf on the nose. Tight but fresh in character with a strong tannic presence. Not showing the oak young Rioja usually does. This seemed to be drinking very nicely on the day though it clearly needs some time.
Expressive nose showing lots of American oak character. Plenty of fruit concentration in front of copious acidity. Tight and tannic at the moment but this is a complete wine that can only get better. Another great 01 gran reserva.
Showing fairly ripe fruit but not a lot of it. Fresh and juicy while also tannic. Not a lot of concentration but seems to have aged pretty well. A drink today wine but the ripeness of the fruit is a bit distracting.
100% Siria. Bright nose showing lots of lime. Reminiscent of a dry Riesling from the Mosel. Lean and fresh, almost effervescent. There is also a nice stony quality. Terrific.
Reductive nose showing signs of new oak. Strongly extracted fruit with strongly drying tannin. Feels like they pushed this a bit too hard but are clearly making a drink now wine.
Nose pf spicy American oak. Clean strong acids make for a nice feel and give a juiciness to the fruit. This seemed to lack some definition though. Not as good as my last go around though perhaps it needs some air.
Fatter and heavier fruit on the nose than most Vinho Verdes. Dense fruit but still fresh and light feeling. It almost seems like the fruit concentration is too high for the sort of wine but I wouldn't call it heavy.
Fresh nose showing minerals potting soil. Reductive and a bit tight. Juicy acids and late tannin pick it up. Old school styled with some nice potential.
Nose smells of spiced American oak though I thought that wasn't used as much in the Duero. Fleshy and dense. Very tannic and tight right now. This needs plenty of time.
Very expressive, especially up front but a bit thin at the finish. There is also some bitterness lending me to think there is some extended skin contact.
