2013 Kongsgaard Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
At the NY Wine Experience, great opportunity to taste with and meet John and Maggie.

Great young Chardonnay. Medium gold color. Expressive nose of orchard fruits, honey. Palate showed ripe apples, citrus, honey, apricot, orange zest. Very young, great now but will continue to evolve...great stuff

2013 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley
94 points
At NY Wine Experieince, big fan of Kistler wines

Great gold/greenish color. Classic CA Chardonnay nose of citrus, toasted oak. Palate of citrus, lemon, almonds, key lime, orange zest, baked apple, creamy vanilla. Long and textured finish... great stuff.

Kistler meant to be had younger - in my experience - I think this will drink really well for next 3-5 years. 94+
White
2012 Olivier Leflaive Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
90 points
At NY Wine Experience.

Lighter gold color. Nose of citrus and white flowers. Palate of orchard fruits, apples, white peach. A bit sour on the back palate. Medium finish. Nice, but not exceptional, may improve with bottle age

Flight 2 - Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone (15 notes)

Red
2006 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
94 points
At NY Wine Experience, fun to check n on this again at 10 years old, I have a case aging nicely in my cellar

Prior notes: "Dark ruby color, looks very youthful at this stage. Nose of black currants, smoke, spice. Full bodied palate, black currant, plums, cedar, graphite/lead, anise, pipe tobacco. Fine grained tannins, beautiful structure."

In a good spot right now, but seems it will still benefit from a few more years of bottle age. Has upside, 94+

2000 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
96 points
At NY Wine experieince, no decant or slow ox that i saw with other presenters of Bdx at this tasting.

Rich garnet color. Nose was expressive with black cherry, currant, wet earth and slight barnyard. Palate showed dark fruits, cedar, cassis and licorice

This is a very big wine, ripe and full bodied. Drinking well now, would benefit from a healthy decant. Given structure and strength of the fruit, my guess is it will continue to evolve in the bottle for the next decade+. Not for every Bdx palate given more dense/extracted style, but I liked it....my rating reflect both where the wine is and my perception of it's potential

2003 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
At NY Wine Experieince. Fun to taste the wine with Alfred Tesseron, having met Noe at a tasting earlier in the year. One of my favorite Bordeaux vintners, first time trying the 03 vintage.

Bright and dense purple color. Nose of red fruits, graphite, cedar, tobacco. Palate showed black currants, cassis, licorice, pine notes...classic Paulliac. Rich mouthfeel and long finish.

Really incredible wine, tannins are resolved and fine. Still leaning to the primary side, showing a long life ahead. Great now, will have another 15+ years ahead of it

2004 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
At NY wine Experience, working my way through the Bdx.

Bright red color. Ripe and expressive nose, dark fruits, cassis and vanilla oak. Palate of sweet cherry, blue fruits, violet and licorice. Powerful in style for St Julien, medium mouthfeel and long finish.

Not a celebrated vintage, very nice now and seems to have the structure to continue to evolve

2006 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
At NY Wine Experience. one of my favorite Bdx wines, a benchmark for Paulliac (IMO).

Medium ruby color. Nose of black fruits, cassis, cedar and violets. Palate of blackberry, dark fruits, cocoa and licorice. Rich mouthfeel, sweetness through the mid palate with some smoke/earth notes. A lot going on here, well developed mid palate. Velvety texture and fine tannins. In a great spot.

2006 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Interested to try this, an unloved vintage for this wine.

Medium ruby red color. Full bodied wine, still very tannic at this stage. Nose of blackberry, dark cherry. Palate of red and dark fruits, earth, spices. Medium mouthfeel and finish. Needs time for the tannins to resolve, tough to rate

2008 Château Palmer France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
At NY Wine Experience. Last of the Bordeaux I tasted..

Medium ruby/garnet color. Nose is rich, black fruits, raspberry, cedar, spice and smoke. Concentrated palate of dark fruits, plum, leather, forest floor, coffee. Intense and full bodied for a Margaux, wine is still in a primary stage. Very nice, will continue to evolve for foreseeable future...

2012 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
First time drinking a young Cheval Blanc. Sweet and fragrant wine. Nose of red fruits, floral notes. Palate of bright cherry, raspberry, black cherry, lavender. Back palate has baking spices, and black tea...really elegant mouthfeel.

Fun to drink this young, it is obviously a great wine that was surprisingly accessible now (at least to me)...should continue to evolve in the bottle and improve

2012 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
NY Wine Experience, very young wine from one of my favorite Bdx producers

Deep ruby color. Black fruits, currant and spices. Wine was not showing well on this particular evening, not bad but just lacked any real complexity, I haven't tasted much of the vintage so not any real reference points...this may come together in the bottle with a few more years of age. Not rating
Red
2004 Château La Mission Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
90 points
At NY Wine experience.

Brownish red color. Nose of pencil shavings, dark fruits, savory meats, earth notes. Medium weight palate of dusted cherry, black currants, cedar and pipe tobacco. Medium finish, not much complexity on the back palate.

All in a nice and elegant wine. It doesnt seem like it will improve much from here.
Red
2010 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
95 points
Nice to revisit this wine, still young. Massive wine...wow...

Deep inky purple, almost black. Thinking this is the darkest color I have seen on this wine, not sure if that means anything here...Nose of blackberry, kirsch, baking spices and smoke. Plate of dark, sweet fruits, savory notes and herbs. Rich mouthfeel and long finish...

Last tasting of this wine it was closed, this bottle very much open but still very primary. I am going to leave my bottles for a few more years, should be long lived and beautiful CdP. Big upside...95+

2010 Domaine du Clos de Tart Clos de Tart France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de Tart Grand Cru
96 points
Always a great wine, this vintage early on it's development.

Nose of dark fruits, violets. Palate skewing to darker fruit profile, black raspberry, plums, cherry. Beautiful and elegant texture. Wine is drinking well now, showing secondary characteristics on a medium/long finish. Will continue to develop for a while, truly great version of this wine. Great upside...96+
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Fun to drink this after having an 86 recently, nice to try a younger version to see where it is in its evolution

Medium gold color, expected at this young age. Nose of apricots, baked peaches. Palate is rich and viscous, showing honey, apricots, orange marmalade...always amazing..this wine should be ready in 10 years? and age indefinitely. Really special stuff, hard for me to rate

2011 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
From prior notes:"Medium/dark ruby color. Elegant nose, perfumed and floral. Rich palate of blackberry, tart red fruits, smoke and savory meats. Long finish and fine tannins...great wine that should be ready in the next few years with a long arc in front of it"

I thought this was a little less expressive than last time I tasted. Maybe closed or just not given enough air time at a large tasting event...Picked up meat/savory notes, more of a black/blue fruit profile. Very nice, should be more expressive over time..would give this a healthy decant

2006 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
This wine not showing well at the tasting, may not have been given enough time to open or the wine just may be in a closed phase?

Did pick up some black fruits, licorice, spices and minerality on the plate. I found the wine a little stringent and short on the finish. Cos D'Estorunel is a wine that has been consistent (in my experience), this may need another 5+ years of bottle age to come together. Would revisit in future years, no rating at this point

Flight 3 - Italian (3 notes)

Red
2012 Pio Cesare Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
At NY Wine Experience, fun opportunity to drink this with the vintner.

Medium ruby color, clear and translucent. Nose of bright cherry, red berries. Red fruits, licorice and balsamic note on the plate. Much more accessible than I thought it would be, my personal experience/rule of thumb is Barolos tend to be hard as nails before 10 years. This will evolve nicely and would cellar for a while. As tannins soften and fruits mature this should be really nice. Actually drinks OK right now
Red
2012 Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric dël Fiasc Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
At NY Wine Experience.

Medium red color. Nose of dark fruits and spice. Palate of dark fruit, cherry, spices and balsamic. I think this needs 5-7 years to settle in, hard to rate as its still to primary and tannic for my palate.
Red
2005 Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Riserva Granbussia Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
At NY Wine Experieince. Big contrast to drink this 05 Barolo vs. some of the younger ones being shown...

Dark ruby color. Expressive dark fruit nose, Palate of black cherry, tobacco, herbs, eucalyptus. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel and texture. Lone and layered finish.. in a great spot now, should continue for another 10+ years.

Some criticism that this is an international/Parker styled wine. While bigger and more fruit forward that other Barolo (I dont have a broad tasting of 05, so no real expertise here...), this is excellent wine now, nicely aged with a good arc in front of it.

Flight 4 - California Reds (8 notes)

Red
2013 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Cask 23 USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District
96 points
Great to check in on this as such a young wine, top of the line wine from a stellar vintage...

Dark purple/red color. Nose of blue and red fruits, floral notes, violets, graphite and oak. Plate repeats with dark fruits, spices and vanilla oak. Still tightly wound at this point and tannic. As expected, this is a spectacular wine but needs 3-5 years of bottle age to settle the tannins and allow secondary characteristics to show. Great upside, 96+

2013 Peter Michael Au Paradis USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
96 points
NY Wine Experience. First opportunity to taste this new offering from Peter Michael...a big fan of their other wines, the press on this creates a big expectation...

Dark purple/black color. Nose of blue fruits, savory, meats, graphite. Palate was dark fruits, blueberry pie, blackcurrant, cassis and cedar. Rich mouthfeel and palate, tannins still quite strong. Wine is still very primary, as expected for the age and the vintage. Quality of the fruit is evident..needs another 3-5 years of bottle age to start to show. Huge upside with this wine...96+

2013 Eisele Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
98 points
Having the opportunity to drink the 92 and 95 the week prior, this was a wine I had sought out at this tasting...I believe this was the first vintage under the Artemis/Latour ownership. An iconic vineyard, great winemakers in an outstanding vintage...you get a pretty good result...

Dark inky blueish color. Nose was black and blue fruits, violets and earth. Palate is lush and viscous, showing blueberry, dark cherry, black raspberry, plums, licorice, cassis...Rich mouthfeel and long finish, layered showing secondary characteristics.

As expected, given youth of wine and strength of the vintage it is still very tannic at this stage. I think this will hit stride in 5 years as tannins settle in and fruit shows more secondary characteristics. This is a "wow" wine even at this stage...upside to maybe 100? 98+

2012 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
96 points
Great opportunity to taste this wine at an early stage in its development. Ramey wines are consistently good in my experience. A great fruit source, great vintner and a terrific vintage in Napa you get good results...

Dark purple color. Nose of ripe dark fruits, blackberry liqueur, and chocolate. Palate of blue fruits, blackberry, cassis, baking spice and graphite/pencil. Rich mouthfeel, Just starting to Early in its development, you see some secondary notes peeking through with licorice , floral notes and herbs on the finish.

This is really great wine that will get better with 3-5 more years of bottle age, should drink well for 20 years past that. Good upside, 96+...Will be buying some...

2012 Melka Métisse Jumping Goat USA, California, Napa Valley
First experieince with this wine, have had many of PM other labels and I am a big fan.

Quick tasting towards the end of the evening. This shows ripe dark fruits on the nose. Jammy red and dark fruits, cherry, spice, boysenberry and cedar. Rich mouthfeel. Long finish.

Classic Phillipe Melka wine, well made and expressive

1999 Ridge Monte Bello USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
92 points
Good to get a reasonably aged Monte Bello. A favorite of mine, it needs at least 10 years (IMO) to start to show its true depth.

Rich red color. Bordeaux-like nose of dark fruits, herbs and pencil. Rich plate of dark fruits, blueberry, earth and spice. Nice wine, but I don't think this will be one of the epic long-lived Monte Bello wines. Maybe that they were not open long enough or that I needed to spend more time with it. It drinks well now, don't think it improves much from here

2007 Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
A sentimental favorite of mine, I love the older vintages of this wine. The wines from the mid 80s can be dead ringers for left bank wine. Haven't had as much experience with more recent vintages. Wines poured by some of the Heitz family, fun to meet them.

Full bodied wine. Rich dark fruits, black cherry on the front palate, cedar, pipe tobacco, black tea through the mid and back palate. I did not pick up the typical eucalyptus/mint you find with Martha's, perhaps I needed to spend more time with the wine, maybe it had not been given enough air time. Nonetheless, a rich and lush wine, still early in it's development. Really nice, should drink well for another 10+ years...maybe longer...

2010 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Gravelly Meadow USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain
Haven't tasted a Diamond Creek in a while, they seem to have lost some focus (or maybe just positioning)

Deep purple color. Nose of dark fruits, cassis and gravel (or course). Palate of black cherry, cassis, spice and mineral notes. Fragrant and perfumed wine, picking up some floral notes on back palate. I recall these wines needing longer cellaring, this one was pretty accessible now. My guess is this continues to improve in time. This is $200+, in a price point with some heavy competition,

Flight 5 - Oregon (2 notes)

Red
2007 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
92 points
Glad they brought one with some age on it, this one from a mixed vintage...

Bright red color. Red fruit nose, cherry and dried herbs/spices. Plate was tart and ripe red fruits. Baking spices and floral notes. Medium weight, secondary notes showing. Wine is in a good spot now, should hold at this level and perhaps settle a bit.
Red
2014 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Flat Block USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
93 points
Good to get a tasting of this, got to know the vintner after a visit to the estate and being hosted by the Casteel family during the April Barrel auction...

Bright ruby color. Red fruits on the nose, raspberry and strawberry jam. Palate slightly darker than nose, strawberry, plums and red currant ...medium weight, elegant mouthfeel. Medium finish, floral secondary notes.

Classic Oregon Pinot from a great finish, should put on some weight in the bottle and drink well for some time.

Flight 6 - South America, Aussie & Spain (5 notes)

Red
2008 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
At NY Wine Experience, first time tasting a Vega Sicilia this young (less than 20 years)

Medium red color. Nose was plums, olives, floral notes and oak. Palate had grippy tannins. Fresh and bright palate, cherry, leather, earth notes. True to the vintner, I think this needs a while (maybe 7+ years) to come together in the Vega Sicilia traditional taste, great stuff meant to be drunk with some age.

2012 Torbreck RunRig Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
95 points
At NY Wine Experience tasting. Fun to drink a younger recent release of this wine. Always great and evolves nicely, this provides a starting point.

Classic inky, deep purple color. Nose of red fruits, raspberry jam, floral notes and spices. Plate is classically big and full bodied, but not overdone by Aussie standards. Palate shows blackberry, cherry, Asian spices, cinnamon...rich through the mid palate. Tannins are present but fine.

Really great Torbreck, combination of power and elegance, this will continue to improve with bottle age. While its accessible now, I might wait another 3 years. Would benefit from a decant if draining now. Good upside, 95+
Red
2013 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 Australia, South Australia
91 points
At NY Wine Experience, not on my original list of wines to taste, first experience with a Cabernet Sauvignon from Penfolds...worth a try.

Dark purple color. Nose of dark fruits, earth notes and herbs. Rich Cabernet profile of dark fruits, cherry, cedar, oak and vanilla...Medium weight, nice mouthtfeel, seems ready to drink now. Should continue to improve

2012 Clos Apalta Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley, Apalta
93 points
Nice to try this vintage, I have become a fan of the wine after visiting the estate in Colchaugua Chile. The blend is Cabernet, Merlot and Carmenere, giving a unique blend of fruit, spices and dried herbs

Nose of dark fruits, herbs and violets. Palate was beautifully textured, showing black and blue fruits, dried herbs, baking spices, cloves and black pepper. Medium finish. Good secondary spice notes, likely coming from camenere component

Great stuff, ready now but seems it will continue to evolve for some time.
Red
2012 Montes Alpha M Chile, Rapel Valley, Colchagua Valley
88 points
First time with this offering from Montes, I have liked the other (higher end) wines very much.

Nice color, clear/translucent ruby. Nose was dark fruits and some spice, mild green notes. Bright fruits, blackberry and blue fruits. Medium weight and mouthfeel. Some secondary herb and mint notes on the finish.

Nice enough...but nothing special. Their other wines (Purple Angel and Cabs) are more distinctive, IMO
