Walkaround tasting. Faintly floral with lots of orchard fruit plus lemon peel. Somewhat austere, certainly acid- and mineral-driven for now, this needs a few more years to harmonize slightly further.

Walkaround tasting. From magnum. Best I can ever recall for this wine. Rich and unctuous, this has Bollinger's bready character well combined with ripe orchard fruit with some cooked versions of the same. Powerful and lingering finish.

Magnum brought to a walkaround tasting. Certainly good for the challenging vintage, this is long and precise, even if slightly angular. Very good length. Best to enjoy over the next 3-5 years.

Then this appeared. Late night, small glass. Still certainly alive, but not quite showing the depth sometimes found in aged Champagne.

In Guigal flight(s). Big and bold and ripe, lots of big, black flavors with power, but less aromatically forthcoming than previous bottles. Certainly very good, but the flight was simply dominated by Mouline 1989.

In Guigal flight(s). Great aromatic complexity, then slightly less complete on palate, but still absolutely wonderfully. The only bad thing I can really say is that it wasn't the 1989 Mouline in the next glass.

In Guigal flight(s). Absolutely brilliant from the moment opened through when poured 30-45 minutes later through when finished an hour_ later. Ripe, powerful fatty and spicy. This kept changing and unfolding, always big and perfectly balanced.

In Guigal flight(s). I opened this for fun to taste after the 1989 Mouline. Still good enough, this started a little musty and stayed earthy throughout. Still lots of olive, black pepper, braised meat, and black pepper coming through, combining for a classic (if tiring) Côte-Rôtie.

In Guigal flight(s). There was more here vs the 2000 alongside, even if the younger vintage has a more alluring character. Very good depth, very good now, certainly still very cellar worthy.

In Guigal flight(s). Slightly more alluring than the bigger 1998, but not as complete. Floral, well spiced with black fruits gracefully maturing. Best I can ever recall for this wine, it is certainly in its peak drinking window.

Ever-so-slightly reductive start in front of delicately floral elements. Lots of apple, pear, and quince coming across in both fresh and dried formats. Needs a few years in the cellar.

Small pour. Still fresh enough and wonderfully rich, this was too warm when served, making it seem more flabby than it should, with the alcohol too pronounced.

Small glass. I was told this is a Parker 100 point wine, which is certainly understandable given its ultra ripe and hedonistic style. Lots to enjoy here, even if lacking much subtle nuance... or anything subtle or restrained. This is easy to enjoy, even if not my preferred style of wine.

Small glass. Good concentration and well balanced with plenty of black fruit everywhere. Maybe lost on me in the whirlwind of so many wines, but this wasn't as exciting as previous bottles.

Small glass. Black cherry and currant with cassis and lots of spice. Already complex and layered, this is already a great beauty, with further upside from here.

Late night, small glass. It was much too late to appreciate this nuanced and elegant wine that is clearly rich, while layered. At first I thought there seemed to be a hollowness in the middle, but then is seemed more persistent a moment later. Certainly a very intriguing wine that demands more attention than I could provide that late in the evening.
