Coravin pour, left to breathe for an hour and tasted over another hour.

First impressions: 1) Notably translucent for the house. 2) Sharp alcohol behind the bouquet.

Appealing bouquet...minus that angular alcohol element. Fig preserves, dates, carob, cured meats, garrigue, juniper, pipe tobacco, kelp, etc. Fine interplay of 'sweet' and savory.

As indicated by the color, light to medium body, which frankly, is too light to support the listed 15 abv. There are no two ways about this. I have enjoyed vintages of this offering back to 1999, and they have tended to feature noteworthy substance and power in youth, which stands up to the alcohol. This is not the case in this vintage, nor with the 2018. It seems the house style has changed somewhat, and if memory serves, a new winemaker (an adult child, I think) took over, a few vintages back.

Might this and the 2018 put on weight with age? Sure...but I would not put money on it. Overall, correct...yet too light in body to match the alcohol, which comes barreling through, like an express freight train, at the back of the bouquet and palate.

92/93. Up to the same level as the plush 2009. Has full aromas of ironey blackberries, coffee'd plums, mint and cassis. Its medium bodied full and spherical, plush coffee'd ironey black, blue and red fruits palate has lovely depth and freshness. Ends long, fresh and tapering with nice gripping tannin. Retail $22. 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Syrah, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Malbec, 2% Petite Sirah, 2% Zinfandel. A real kitchen sink kind of Cabernet with six other varieties thrown into the mix. I have said before that Rodney Strong produces some of the best Quality-Price Ratio wines in California and this wine is proof. They produce a sheet-ton of this wine, but it is still fantastic. Tons of dark berry fruit, plum, spice, and a decided herbal, vegetal note that I love. The palate is equally stellar with rich fruit, zingy tartness, and a surprising level of tannins. This really is a great wine regardless of the price.

Tasted over three days, on the 1st and 3rd only. A spectacular bottle of wine, notable for its inflection-changing layers and harmonious purity. Pronounced date, dried apricot, raspberry essence, cracked peppercorn, lavender, kelp, peat, iodine, and musk notes throughout. The wine features beautifully delineated precision, which is atypical for Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Sleek, bordering on riveting. A touch more of anything, or perhaps a cut of properly seasoned lamb would have put it over the top.

Every bit as enchanting on the 3rd days as the 1st. Beautiful now, no hurry, though no real reason to wait either, especially with a 4+ hour decant. The whole package! Crazy good QPR!

4/18/20, 9:14 AM - Two is good too. I am not looking to soften the tannins which usually are not that big of a deal with Pinot. I think there is enough fruit and acidity to hold for that long to see what tertiary elements emerge. This certainly got better with added complexity with air as it was consumed over 3 hours. I think BC wines can age longer than people often expect. If I had two more instead of one I would try one in 2 years and the other in 5.

PnP, evolved and opened up over the evening, dusty cigar box on nose, young but dark fruit flavours - early fruit compote - balanced. Lovely to drink right out of the bottle and after 2 - 3 hours of air. Bad match though for spicy Italian sausage pasta - but would be great with something like mushroom risotto (next time). Not for ageing, but would improve with a vigorous decant.

PnD let air for 2hrs.

Plummy rich herbal balanced with a lot of depth and complexity. Impressive different for BC promising going forward. Lots of life ahead. Going to track down another and put it away for 10 years.

PnD let air for 30 mins.

Dried cherry Bing cherry plum raspberry ganache anise and tar on the intense developing nose.

Dry. High acidity. Medium alcohol. Medium(+) tannnins. Medium body. Medium(+) intensity with flavours of cherry plum raspberry and tar. Youthful. Medium finish. This needs time or tons of air.

Better on the nose. This is going to get way better. Case worthy.

Five days later fleshes out picks up soy and meaty notes with some floral notes. Wow. +2pts.

    3/22/19, 11:00 AM - Thanks.

Year in year out one Nipozzano has been a go to wine for me. One of the world's greatest QPR wines. Ages surprisingly well. Have bottles back to 2010 vintage.

1/20/20, 5:42 PM - Thanks for the feedback on the note Pontifax. I am a big Nipozzano fan. Just had the 2016 it is great and going to get better. Three years ago I had the 1970 Fattoria Selvapiana Chianti Rùfina Riserva a huge revelation on the ageability of Chianti Riservas.

PnD. Let air for 3hrs.

Consistent with previous notes. Needs air to show its best.

1/20/20, 5:39 PM - Happy New Year to you too. Just had some of the 2016 Nipozzano. Shows more upfront fruit. It is going to be real good. Will let you know on the Ardanza hate the price they charge in Canada as opposed to the UK.

This still has a lot of vim! Had dusty aromas of leather, figs, raspberries, vanilla, and strawberries. Its medium bodied punchy, elegant+stylish vanilla infused zingy red and blue fruits palate has got impressive depth. Ends longish, tangy and red fruited. 13.5%. Needs 3-4 hrs aeration. Lay down 5 years +. Still youthful. More traditional and red fruited than the 2009.

This is very good and oaky nicely minerally strapping inky blackfruits wine with good acidity+ length as well as powerful yet fine tannin. Not as expressive as previous bottles. 14.5%. Needs 4 hrs+ aeration. Excellent QPR at 11 Euros.

12/5/19, 8:44 PM - Nice note. Especially with regard to the need for air. I am holding a couple of bottle for another 3-5 years to see what transpires.
