Darker, caramel/gold color. Botrytis, dried apricot, brown sugar and vanillin oak seem to dominate the nose. Full bodied, dried oranges, mango and pineapple. A bit harsh on the short-to-medium length finish. Seems to be on a gentle decline - drink up!!

Po’s 1990 Bordeaux (La Trompette, London): Dense and quite deep barley sugar colour. Deepest amber. Similar barley sugar nose with a touch of burnt caramel. A slightly over singed crèche brûlée element here. Very evolved and medicinal. In terminal decline. (**)1/2

Medium amber color - No sediment, great condition. Nose gives caramel, honey, apricot, ripe mango, candied orange and beewax. On the palate it is still fairly fresh with a lovely balance between sweetness and acidity. Maybe lacks a little bit acidity. Drank for biscuits with foie gras, Saint agur and marmelade. Great experience. Medium+ acidity Medium alcohol Long finish

Domaine de Chevalier vertical with Olivier Bernard (Le Cafe Descartes at the French Embassy): Fully mature nose displaying slightly dry yellow fruit, peach preserves, orange marmalade, candied ginger, black tea, sweet spices and earth. Very good concentration, packed slightly dry yellow fruit, deeply toned and dense, medium acidity and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish.

Domaine de Chevalier Tasting (French Embassy): Aromas of graham cracker, quince paste, apricot. Sweet and rich on the palate with glazed pears, dried apricot, quince, nougat. Honey-orange colour with yellow sprinkles. Candied pineapple and apricot nose with receding hints of lemon zest. Broad and a little bit limp on the palate, apricot, pineapple and caramel, lacks acidity and grip. Has seen its peak, but still a good companion for fois gras. Drink up.

I'm not a big fan of 1990 Sauturne and this was (frankly) 'nothing special'. Lacks much depth and finish - just not enough body or complexity. Seems to be tiring. Will show best with a simple desert but was found wanted when served on its own. 89-90pts. Drink to 2020.

Delicious, unctuous apricots, caramel, and dark honey. Nicely offset with faint acid to effectively cut the sweetness. Tonight with foie gras as a starter, and also at the end of the meal with a cheese plate and a spoonful of chocolate soufflé. Perfection!

At the end of its best days, or perhaps slightly past that point, the wine shows more caramel, butterscotch, orange and burn toffee notes than, sweet, yellow, honeyed fruit. On the bright orange side in the finish, if you are sitting on bottles, I'd drink them up, before more of the sweet fruit slowly fades away.

This was a tasty companion for saffron ice cream, but the d'Yquem next to it really underscored the shortcomings here - caramel, spice, orangey flavors waver in and out and pinch off unexpectedly compared to the Yquem which was a full spectrum wine.

This is the third last bottle of 24 and by far the best tasting. The balance between the sweetness, the fruit, and the aftertaste are simply incredible. There is now a creamy polish that lingers in the mouth like a great crème brûlée (without any hint of charring). Bordeaux vs. Napa Cab: mano-a-mano in 4 rounds; 9/7/2011-9/8/2011: This was flat-out fantastic. Wonderful bouquet of burnt brown sugar, grand marnier, and vanilla. What this lacks in complexity and nuance, it makes up for with verve and depth. Just layers of sweet fruit (richer than the '86s, '88s, and '89s stickies), yet with a sneaky-dry finish that keeps it totally refreshing. The color is definitely getting dark, like many of the 1990 Sauternes, so I would drink this sooner than later, but wow!

From half-bottle. Paired with Stilton cheese before dinner. Deep gold, almost almond in color. Nose of apricot, pecan, botrytis. Very smooth and rich, almost silky, mouthfeel. Llow, almost non-detectible acidity. A little one-note on the palate, with apricot and honey predominating, but a very enjoyable, if simple, aged Sauternes.

Really lovely, mature Sauternes. It paired extremely well with seared Foie Gras. The nose was fairly simple with orange peel, caramel, and a touch of shower curtain. The palate had a wonderful roundness that really coated my mouth. Like, the nose it was not extremely complex, but it was fresh and balanced. This did not have any of the burned sugar elements that I have tasted in some of the 90s.

I wanted to like this wine more. It just seemed to lack some acidity to balance the sweetness. A nice wine which showed overwhelmingly of Grand Marnier at first pour, than some nuttiness appears. Apricot, honey, and orange flavors and some flabiness. Good, but not great Sauternes, but no where near the 1959 Guiraud I had a few months ago (thanks, Rod!) and wasn't ever going to get to that level.

Seattle Low-Key Bordeaux at Lola (Lola Restaurant): Grand Marnier kicks you in the nose. I also found myself thinking of those chocolate oranges that you smash on the table to separate into segments.. Also a little of what I thought was marzipan. Quite sweet, could use some more acid to cover the sweetness. May have been slightly warm by this point. A bit of apricot and some honey rounds things out.

Low-key Tasting Group does Bordeaux at Lola (Seattle, WA, USA): At first the nose seems a bit hot with lots of orange, almost Muscat-like in overall intensity, a bit clumsy. The palate was a different story with caramel, orange and loads of honey. This finish with a nice kick of acid to keep things fairly fresh.

Lovely marmalade flavour with a good balance of acidity. Long finish.

TN: OFFline: Pichon Baron VS. Pichon Lalande 1982, 1986, 1989, 1990, 1995, 1996, 2000 (NYC): Orange and sweet. This was paired with some cheese and sliced apples. Very sweet with some honey and apricot flavors.

Very sweet and could use more acidity to
balance the wine. Best extremely cold.

Light brown color with a bouquet and flavor very typical of old Sauternes. Mildly sweet. Not to my liking. Much better to have drunk this young.
