1990 Château Clerc Milon

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (133) Avg Score: 92.1 points

  • Interesting nose of black currants, black cherries, cedar, toasted French oak, vanilla and mint. Medium-bodied, this is lithe and just glides across the palate as the tannin has completely resolved. There's sour cherry, black and red currants, scorched earth and burnt wood on the palate. The nose is fantastic, the palate is a bit past its prime. Drink now. 90

  • This bottle came from a different source than the previous 3. It was great and the freshest I had until today.

  • Described as a definitive vintage for Clerc Milon, this is a blend of 51% Cab, 42% Merlot and 7% CF.

    Preparation - No decant!
I was concerned about the fragility of this wine, with its age, and I have to say this was the right decision. Simply left in the bottle, and poured out gently to reduce the sedimentation movement.

Nose of polished leather with no funk remaining, blackcurrant and cassis on the palate with hints of cedar on the finish.

Tannins fully resolved, and adid is medium. Medium-long finish.

    Vintage report, 1990:
Changeable weather in the spring – cold weather in March and April followed by high temperatures in May – caused early but slow flowering.
    June and July were dry;
August remained dry and very hot, with several days of heat-wave conditions.

Veraison, like flowering, took place early but slowly.
A long veraison period means that the grapes mature unevenly, so that bunches where veraison is too irregular must be eliminated.
That having been done, the potential of the crop was exceptional.

The grapes were in perfect condition, very ripe and deeply coloured.
Fine weather in September meant that the harvest could take place under ideal conditions as regards both the maturity of the grapes and picking.

    My conclusion:
With this being a 33 year old bottle.. I have to describe the mouthfeel and body as medium- Amazing how a powerful structured wine such as this has mellowed so much, to the point of being silky with fully resolved tannins and light acidity over the years.

Yes, the best days may have been 5 plus years ago, but this CM 1990 is still enjoyable in its own way today. Lucky we popped it with a Durand as the cork was completely soaked through but it still did its job 👏 I love it!

Thanks Jack bro, who saved this wine all the way from the UK and France.. for tonight's welcome to Ipoh dinner for brother Teck Kong at Mun Choong. We paired this with the pork ribs, after being spoilt by the incredible large prawns!

  • Opened 20 minutes before tasting.
    Very vital color.
At first, strong smell of funk that dissipated quickly. After that beautiful aromas of mature pauillac. We drank this over 2 hours and the last glasses were the best.
No upside from here for sure, but could remain on this plateau for a while. I have two more and will drink them over the next 2-3 years.

  • Wow, what a parfume! Still delicious and perfectly integrated after ca. 20 minutes in the glas. Wouldn‘t wait any longer.

  • Still a nice color. 3 hour decant. Leather and earthy notes.

  • This bottle was weaker and lighter than previous ones. Almost burgundian.

  • 48x 1990 (37x Bdx, 6x Napa, 5x others): This was one of the positive surprises only missing more elegance and softness and some tertiary complexity to reach a higher score. Very Pauillac, young, fresh and with all telltale Pauillac aromatics. For sure the best Clerc Milon I’ve had to date. Strong 93 pts.

TN: Fresh, quite dense and intense dark berries, sexy, ripe, toasty, herbs and minerality to complement that ripe fruit. Both on the nose and palate this is so dense, fresh and young, that I would have guessed this to be a 2000 or younger. Impeccably structured and with a good, medium+ length finish.

Decanting: Quick double decant three+ hours prior to the tasting to remove sediment, which seemed sufficient.

  • Cork came out in pieces and outside of it was moldy. The color is ruby red and hardly any sediment. Strong whiff of barnyard and damp earth. After a 30 minute decant, thin to medium body, no secondary characteristic. This Bordeaux did open up and improve over a 2 hour decant. Flavor of black cherry with wet earth, olive juice, no coffee, graphite, or tannins. It went well with a rib eye as there was enough acid to complement the meal. Drink it now because our experience was better than the others below

  • Opened and tasted immediately Cedar and closed. Opened up over the next two hours in a wonderful way. This wine is a fantastic example of what makes aged Bordeaux so special - cedar, spice, cigar box with fully integrated tannins and alcohol. Wonderful fruit expanding over time and great intoxicating nose. Absolutely blown away by this wine.

  • This Clerc Milon also had an alluring and intriguing nose, a bit of barnyard, a mature browning colour. It was a bit wobbly and old school but really fun and reminded me a bit of Mouton 1990. As with its more illustrious sibling it would be easy to find fault with this wine, but like the Mouton 1990 subjectively it delivers a lot of pleasure now.

  • Po's 1990 Bordeaux Dinner (La Trompette, Chiswick): Dark fruited, spice, green pepper. Hand-soap? Medium bodied, cool dark fruit, quite linear, vibrant acidity, good length finish. Overall very good if not in line with expectations.

  • Po's 1990 Bordeaux dinner (La Trompette): Truffley nose, showing some Brett. Thin on the palate at first, although filled out a little with time in glass, obvious but welcome acidity, a note of Asafoetida. Probably my least favourite tonight.

  • Po’s 1990 Bordeaux (La Trompette, London): Somewhat muddy on the nose, though better in the palate. Quite dry though does open nicely. A touch agricultural but the Brett does add some complexity. Not as bright or as pure as previous bottles. ***1/2

  • Final bottle, and an excellent one to finish on. Very harmonious. A lovely mix of spiced exoticism and classic blackcurrant fruit initially, putting it almost hypothetically mid-Hironde. Really quite long. Plush with a degree of richness, though that vintage signature does subside to a more classical left bank signature after a couple of hours. Lovely. ****

  • From owc. Level bottom neck. Wine opened 30 minutes and consumed in 2 hrs. Light vanilla and methol, then turning to chocolate and leather. Length acceptable, and tannin all resolved. Don't see much improvement, but don't see an immediate decline. Enjoy now and in the next 2-3 yrs.

  • Good fill level; cork almost completely wet but came out intact with prong tool. Excellent, deep vibrant color with little bricking. Initial bouquet was very faint but became more prominent after a few minutes in the glass. Overall impression is that it has aged well but clearly shows a decline. Nice mature fruit and decent finish.

  • Zu alt. Schmeckt nur noch alt und sonst nach wenig.

  • The nose is just loaded with red, ripe fruits and eucalyptus, not the typical black currant and charred oak. Rich and simply glides across the palate. The tannins are perfectly resolved and the acidity is low. What a lithe but corpulent beauty!! The finish is a bit washed-out, so drink up. 91

  • Bordeaux 1990 horizontal tasting (Fribourg): 1990 Bordeaux horizontal hosted by a private collector. 30 years down the road, the vintage comes across as bold and muscular, youthful and in general not yet open for business or at times closed. Highlights included Figeac, Haut-Brion, Mouton, Calon Ségur – and to my surprise – Marquis de Terme. See tasting story for more take-aways and the complete line-up.

    Tasting note
Herbal freshness surrounding an intense, ripe, rather red type of fruit. Unfortunately this was slightly corked in the nose, but more so on the palate.

  • The cork was almost gone, but the wine is in perfect condition, animal, farm and leather notes, hints of rust but extremely floral, beautiful youthful pauillac, fruit forward after 30y!!!

  • Gorgeous left bank nose, leather, green pepper, dried cherries, dried orange rind, palate matches, fully resolved tannin, good acid, long finish. Started show more tertiary notes with air 92-93

  • Vanilla, blackberry. Some hints of the woody nose. 1990 was a great vintage, and probably that is why this 1990 Clerc Milon it's in the tail end of its drinking window. Drink up now, will not improve.

Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comment

  • The wine, a concentrated, dark red of considerable intensity, has a highly refined nose that opens on slightly toasted aromas mingled with floral notes. On the palate it reveals a tight structure of stylish tannins, dense but not harsh, enhanced by forward fruit with crisp cherry notes. The long and flavoursome finish shows beautiful balance, expressing the freshness of the fruit and the power of a skillfully controlled texture. more tasting note in finewines.com.sg

  • There are some enthusiastic notes on the 1990 Clerc Milon out there and I regret that mine cannot be one of them. Though this shows a classic redcurrant, cedar, leather, the aromatic volume is turned down and the palate is subdued and faded. Fresh, more intense versions of this could be great but this may simply reflect one data point in the evolution of this wine suggesting a trend towards decline.

  • Color: purple with hint of brown
Nose: little barnyard and little fruit
Palate: same as nose. Little drying tannins. Wine is on a downhill slope. Best to start finish this up. Better with food.

Update: after days later the wine actually got much better so I am upping the score. The wine was much bettef with bbq

  • Paris - Stockholm - Umeå - Tokyo in 6 days; 11/26/2019-12/1/2019 (World): Took a while to wake up.
Because of logistics, (both bottle and crew flew in to Tokyo today) it wasn't possible to aerate before serving.

Blind, I felt that it was a muddled pool, like so many older Graves. At first, I couldn't find anything at all. The Pauillac perfumes I could only notice after having seen the label.

Nevertheless, this is quite a delicious bottle and should be fine for another 20 years or more.

  • This bottle is obvious tired comprare to last bottle 4 years ago. Dark purple brown. Aroma: Barnyard, wet earth, thyme,l leather, mint and cherry. Silky tannin and gamy at palate entry. Mid-palate a bit thin, juicy cherry, plum and other dark fruit. Still long finish of mint, tomato, leather. Faded fruit with gentle silky tannin, but not much structure left, might need to drink other bottles soon.

  • Cork was understandably soft and deteriorated. After clearing that out, the juice within was thankfully fine. Enjoyable, old school claret. Still seems a few years from peaking, but certainly drink up if you are holding these. Tannins not fully resolved yet so still a bit of bite; fruit holding up fine all things considering. Initial mild funk was enticing on the nose, giving way to something more elegant when approaching the hour mark.

  • Decanted 1 hour. Rich soft leather color w/strong legs. Full pungent oak nose. Full tar & leather flavor w/good finish. Nose continued to be stronger than the flavor. Drink now! After 3 hours wine fullness faded & the oak temperament abated. Wine softened over this period. Appears from my 2016 comment the wine is getting past its prime.

  • The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It tastes like vanilla. The body is light/medium. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

  • 92-93 In a great spot, leather is dominant on the nose, palate has dark cherry, macerated plum, cedar, tobacco, tannins are resolved but still maintain some grip, good acidity, lengthy finish and fully mature. For me this is punching way above its price point and drinking great at 28 yrs old.

  • Dark red color with a nice earthy bouquet. On the palate, more fruit than I expected, some mineral notes, a bit on the light side, and plenty of acidity. Not particularly complex, but very nice. Still has room to go.

  • Quite deep coloured with little bricking and full/medium bodied with a complex nose of ripe cassis tinged fruit and wet leather. This followed through onto the palate which additionally showed good depth, suave texture, good acidity and Pauillac firmness of ripe tannins supporting a decently long finish. No hurry to drink up. Very good.

  • Decanted for 1 hour and served with cow's milk cheeses as final act of a wonderful dinner at Glasshouse. This bottle was good - albeit not up to the heights I have seen this wine reach. The nose showed a lot of barnyard which I had not gotten so much in previous bottles. It was very full bodied after the burgundies we had previously, and was quite peppery on the palate. An old school claret.

  • Decanted half an hour before drinking. Starts with a lot of funk, not for everyone but I like it. With more air the funk slows-down, sour cherry, cranberry and tobacco gets more present, good freshness, elegant, very sustainable. Incredible wine, quite complex though it's easygoing, not at the end of the evolution. 93+

  • I have had this wine a couple times recently and it amazed me before. This bottle, although OK, was nowhere as good as the others I had tried sadly. I guess with this age you are always at risk of bottle variation. This was lacking the sweet fruit the other bottles showed. Still very classic, very nice claret.

1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Ok, this one is there. It's all about meat juice, cedar, and ripe sweet red fruit with life. It's long, gripping, and as mature as it's going to get. Should stay here for at least 5 years with slight improvement. In 1990, this was the buy over the mouton for sure....no hype in parkers comments. Drink

  • At home over beef. Not the strongest 1990 Bordeaux by any stretch, but enjoyable nonetheless. The nose showed a bit of funk at first, but it blew off to reveal a classic Pauillac nose of cassis, pencil lead and tobacco. The palate was a touch straightforward, but pleasantly proportioned, with juicy acidity and velvety tannins framing full flavours of cassis infused with warm woody spices and cedarish nuances trailing into a nice finish. Quite a textbook Pauillac, and a pleasant drink, but lacking a bit of X-factor.

  • No score on this one. The wet cork disintegrated. An initial barnyard scent passed in a few minutes, leaving a decent aging wine that no one dumped out.

  • Shiny light ruby with rusty edges. Intense and intoxicating perfume of new saddle, cranberry, blackcurrant, eucalyptus with background notes of milk chocolate and clove. Amazing freshness and energy for a mature Bordeaux. High acidity on the palate concealing an undercurrent of sweet fruit. Light bodied with supple tannins. Almost Burgundian. A food wine.

  • This wine was a great surprise, as it has matured beautifully and is still drinking extremely well. Black currant, tobacco, leather, cedar, graphite, and olive tapenade on the nose. Everything was very well-balanced on the palate, with the tannins seamlessly integrated. Nice level of acidity and impressive length on the finish. Highly recommended.

  • Fully in line with previous note. Amazing wine! Pulled cork with Durand to make sure it came out in a piece, very much needed, cork as SOAKED to the top. But the nectar was fully intact. Gave it an hour decant and it was sublime then with the beautiful 1990 fruit showing, some lovely wild strawberries, unsmoked tobacco, hung meat, tannins had fully softened. This was in the perfect place tonight. Awesome. There are better wines yes (e.g. 1990 Haut Brion), but for the money if you can get a good bottle of this boy this is a treat and must be counted amongst very best value mature Bdx out there. Loving it!

  • Pauillac at RSJ: Medium/deep garnet. Red fruited, ripe, sweet, medium bodied, lovely palate - harmonious, tannins fully resolved, touch of soil and spice, hedonistic but balanced, long, complete. Lovely ****1/2.

  • Double decanted half an hour pre drinking. Garnet colour with a relatively ripe nose of blackcurrant with pronounced graphite. The palate is fresher than other 90s with the graphite seeming to add balance. An attractive wine to enjoy now - this seems to outperform its origin ****

  • Medium-dark ruby with a hint of brown. Impressive given its age, would have expected a lighter and more garnet colour. In the nose the oxidated notes of leather are apparent but not overbearing. Body is full, tannins are present and very smooth and are harmoniously bleded in with the subtle acidity. Enjoayble still on the 2nd. Only flaw is a subtle terpentine taste. Apart from that a very accomplished, elegant wine well preserved. day.

  • Cork was soft but not leaking. Hint of bricking at the edges, otherwise garnet in color. Mature, grilled meat, leather, tobacco and herbs on the nose. Lots of secondary flavors, blackberry and hints of cassis. Still has some black cherry and tart aspects on the finish. Best after about two hours.

  • Upon opening nose of soft smooth velvet. Decanted 1.5 Hours. Beautiful rich garnet color. Soft leather profile w/exceptional legs. As wine opened the nose become more powerful w/a more dramatic profile. The profile of a truly exceptional Bordeaux. Flavor of black grapes, soft leather & currant w/impressive finish. Flavor lingered on the palette with smooth tannin's. Exceptional from the 1st glass to the last. Wine held well throughout dinner. Most enjoyable wine.

  • The foil had been damaged or chewed and the cork was in a bad way, soaked black and crumbling on extraction. After screening and filtering out the sediment, the wine sat for forty minutes in the decanter, giving it a chance to blow off the considerable funk and barnyard that comes with a bottle this old.

Deep garnet color with the expected browning around the edges

With the condition of the cork, I didn’t expect much, but the wine was in great shape. Dark and mysterious with just a hint of mustiness to remind you of the pedigree.

The nose is about earth and herb, wood smoke, and hints of black currant if you look hard for it. The pallet is silky smooth, and If you like old, brooding bordeaux, this is it. There’s still a thread of acidic brightness, but little of the fruit that you’d expect to find with it. The rest is all black coffee, tobacco, bakers chocolate, anise, and black pepper. There are hints of Mint Oreo which, by an extraordinary coincidence, my son had just put in my mouth.

The finish seems to have lost some of its staying power since I last tried in 2013, but it’s still respectable.

I have one bottle left and I’m thinking autumn - before the last leaf falls.

  • What a lovely mature Bdx... still ruby in colour (bottle was good fill in neck), showing the beautiful sweet 1990 fruit that I love, this vintage is just spectacular and for my money is the best there is. Fully mature but definitely not over the hill - but unlike the Lagrange 1990 I tasted a lot recently this will not get better with age. So do pull the cork and enjoy. Was best after ~1 hour decant.

  • Forgotten bottle got consumed a few years later than prescribed. Decanted with very little sediments. Extra long cork probably saved this!
Delicious cherry initial flavors followed with peppered berry finish. Lovely acidity to stand up to steak au poivre!
Shame that I had to enjoy this all by myself!

  • Very good, solid mature claret. Nicely dusty blackcurrrant fruit, opening out to a leafy and slightly earthy nose. Good core of sweet fruit. Qualitatively as good as previous bottles, but a more classical presentation cf some of the slightly more exotically fruited previous bottle; maybe the vintage character is calming a bit. Anyway, classic and lovely. ****

  • A very light, classic, Paulliac, which has lost both its power and abundant fruit. Good, but no sophistication to speak of and nothing to go an extra mile for. Drank well after a 30 minutes decant. Drink up.

  • Poured into decanter and drank over about 90min. Not the best cork, completely soaked and very top shoulder fill. Mature color reflecting the age of the wine with a garnet core and slight browning towards the translucent rim. Despite the soaked cork, none of the feared mustiness on the nose, initially dominated by sweet leather then opens up with potato chips and herbal notes. Beautiful smooth while exceptionally light-footed on the palate . Perfect balance with still good fruit but will not last much longer as the leather and tobacco flavors will take over soon. Tannins entirely integrated. Medium finish. Great but would drink up now.

  • Color: Opaque garnet with amber rim. Aroma: Intense wet earth, baryard, licorice, mint, vanilla, oaky. Barnyard dissipated after 15min air, became meaty, coffee. Palate entry: juicy acidity, smooth integrated tannin. Mid-Palate: Very creamy, blackberry, plum, tea, cedar. Finish: vanilla, oaky, licorice and cinnamon, hint of leather. Long finish with sweet tannin and soft oak. well aged Bordeaux, nice integrated soft tannin with lots of fruit and lingering spices.

  • Has lovely aged claret flavours of tobacco and cedar, held in a light frame, unfortunately drying out a bit.

My wife loved it. I felt it lacked concentration. But given her opinion I would love to try another bottle.

A special wine, flavours that only 25 years in a cellar can give.

  • From Imperial and consequently tasting remarkably youthful as it approached its quarter century. Still full of gorgeous fruit so perhaps not as haughtily aristocratic as some but this is no flighty beauty. The cedar and sandalwood of classic Pauillac lend it a serious edge and the wood has integrated so well that the wine just slips down beautifully. No rough edges. Wonderful claret.

  • Nearly 20 years ago I bought 2 cases. At the time Parker rated this wine 86 PP. From 1997 on I enjoyed each bottle and rated all of them at least 90 PP. Now I drunk one of the very last bottles: seductive bouquet, at the palate delicious, still fruitful and elegant. But less powerful as before. So its time to drink the very last bottle before it fading away.

  • Medium red-garnet color, bricking. Tobacco leaf nose, with moderate cherry-berry and cedar. On arrival, low tannin and low-medium acidity. Easy to drink and easy to appreciate, this bottle is the best example of aged Clerc Milon I've had. Long finish, very fine-grained with tannin. Leaves the glass wonderfully coated with herbaceous stuff: celery root, cedar, leaves, and oddly enough, gluvine. Bottle #2 of two.

  • 1hr decant needed to blow of the animale smell and increase body and sweetness. Beautiful wine! Drink now.

  • The long soaked cork came out cleanly. I decanted and the wine started to open in 45 min.

The slight mustiness adds character and serves to remind you of its pedigree. On the nose there is cedar, woodsmoke, wet earth and minerals. A touch of barnyard blows off quickly.

The pallet has black spice, cedar, tobacco and coffee. A thread of tart fruit runs from start to finish.

This bottle is silky smooth and chewey. Probably past its prime but still dignified and very enjoyable. It may have some staying power left. A beautiful old bottle. 91

  • good from the first pour but outstanding after an hour decant. amazing pauillac nose, sweet ripe delicious cedar smoke cassis. tasted exactly as the nose promises. incredible match w the pappadelle w chorizo and tomato. could have mistaken for mouton rothschild it's that good. after 2.5 hours still great but losing a little charm as it loses its grip.

  • Left Bank Bordeaux Group Tasting (Chez Matt et Reema): Cork soaked 80% through. Bottle in pristine condition.

WOTN! This is in it's prime drinking window. Mature color.
Toasty and smoky with pain grille, soy, beef jus, roasted meats, roast plum, and cassis. Sweet tannin with very fresh acidity. The bottle was opened and being drank for over 8 hours and the wine kept performing, kept going till the very last drop. Wow. A true testament to this spectacular vintage.

  • Drank this as part of a 4 wine pairing.
A good old bordeaux. No much dirty socks on the nose at the open, which I found unusual. Color was brick but the fruit was still solid and the tannins there, but mild.

  • South Charlotte Wine Lovers - April 2013 (Tom and Sue's Casa): Tom said he let this breath for about 5 hours. Funky Bordeaux aromatics. Had alongside an '95 Pahlmeyer which exhibited a similar nose. This wine was extremely smooth and well balanced. My first thought upon tasting was that if drinking blind I would have guessed it to be an older Dunn Howell Mountain. So we ended up opening an '87 Dunn HM later in the evening and my comparison was spot on (although there was something just a little bit better about the Dunn). This paired very well with our salmon.

  • Barnyard city on the nose and the palate. Tasted like it may have been a much better wine at some point. Ripe fruit with no mojo. Over the hill.

Genial!

  • Nice aged left bank bordeaux, but for me it's lacking a bit of aromatic lift. Classic tobacco, leather, and earth mix with cassis. Palate finishes a bit short, but fruit is ripe. In a good spot right now.

  • Julien S-M's 1990 Bordeaux (RSJ, London): Blind. Slightly Christmas cake, sweet fruited nose and palate with some blackcurrant coming through. If this is what I think it's a little more exuberant than previous bottle, but it still has that exotic character tempered by some refreshing blackcurrant leaf. Lovely. ****

  • Despite age and anxiety when opening because cork seemed wined through, bottle was very good, with a strange apple aftertaste

  • Rich, cinnamon and warm spiced milk on the nose. Quite exotic. Ripe with a touch of Madeira cake, but there's a nicely leafy blackcurrant character here too. The showiest of the three. As good as previous bottles but will a bit of extra lushness too. Lovely. The DDC and this as good as each other in their own ways, but at opposite ends of the spectrum. ****

  • Fully saturated cork that easily was removed. Very nice clear ruby color with moderate barnyard earthiness; subsequently gently decanted 1 hour to serving with grilled steak kabobs. As the barnyard receded, cherries and red currant moved to the forefront, with slight touches of oak spices and blackberry. As this was open a further hour, it grew in stature, becoming more rich and nicely fruited. This was an excellent showing, and certainly there's no hurry in drinking these up.

  • A lovely and really fragrant nose of blackcurrant, tobacco and cedarwood when first decanted, that really fills the room. Drunk two hours later - good blackcurrant and mellow tobacco nose, sweet blackcurrant fruit on the attack and through the mid-palate, really quite sweet-fruited in the mould of the vintage, with a mellowed, more meaty and slighty spicey development through to the moderately long finish. Lovely. Mature and ready but with time in hand. ****

  • Lovely in its maturity. Gentle, restrained elegance. Initial mustiness (actually slightly enjoyable), followed by medium bodied fruit, short finish. Not decanted. Time to drink.

  • Quite full in colour. A plush nose, blackcurrant, a touch of tobacco, blackcurrant leaf and spices. Quite full and rounded on the attack and across the mid-palate and, unlike the last bottle, this time it holds up and follows through to a decent length finish. Quite persistent. ery smooth and rounded. Satisfying. Bare ****

  • Wet cork throughout (as others have noted) with neck level fill. Decanted. At first, I was afraid the wine was not good, but initial moldy odor dissipated, leaving tobacco nose and a smooth wine with delectable fruit. Paired with Christmas roasted tenderloin. Three left.

  • Good bottle, good cork and levels. Decanted for 45 minutes.
Still dark in colour with little bricking. Lovely open nose from open till the end (1.5hrs or so) with typical bdx herbal and red fruit notes. On the palate it needs 30mins of decanting to smooth out but post that it is a lovely wine, silky and layered with good vitality presence. Old school elegence. Very Very nice. 93-94+, drinks beautifly now and will last for sure.

  • Saturated cork with ok fill level. Decanted & musty nose blew off in 15 minutes. Wine was outstanding with tobacco aromas, plleasant complexities, with little finish. If I had more I'd quickly find more special occasions to drink up.

  • Cork wet though although level decent. Deep ruby. Lovely nose of blackcurrant and tobacco that follows though to the attack, joined by plummy fruit and liquorice. Very ripe and quite lush 1990 front-end with a bit more structure in the middle. Falls away with a short finish though. A very nice drink but without the finish for greatness. ***

  • Med red with brick edge. Graphite, iodine, flowers, cheries, hint of tar - really lovely. Light weight but fair intensity of cherries, menthol and iodine. Finish is short. Past its peak but very enjoyable.

  • Wet cork, and low neck fill as others have seen. Clearly leaked at least once. Popped and poured. Classc'90 Bordeaux funk, cigar box and balanced fruit. Faded some 2 hours later. Don't think this needs a decant at this stage.

  • Cork was wet through and through. I don't think bottle is defective though; I like to think I uncorked it just in time. There was a distinct barnyard nose with hints of cedar and cigar box. The color was appealing, a deep ruby with an orange hue as it reached the edges of the glass. On the palate, I got dried cranberries and leather, my wife said licorice and on deeper reflection, I had to agree. There was a crisp acidity and some black pepper just before the medium-long finish. My wife says she shoveled enough horse stalls as a kid to find the smell repulsive, so I had to open a separate bottle for her, but I liked it.

    >>edit: Tried this again the day after. I took a couple of points off: One on the nose, because the brett is so excessive that it overwhelms everything else and a couple on taste, because there just isn't a lot there, especially on the midpalate. I'm opening another bottle with a healthy cork later tonight out of curiosity- to see if my score improves.

  • My notes on this bottle mirror Pilot360's. This was also a Brentwood bottle, and the cork was also totally soaked. However, there seemed to be a little more life in this bottle. There was some nice hints of greatness, but nothing really transcending. Definitely showing it's age, but still very tasty. Tasting notes match earlier posters: typical Pauillac profile with some additional sweetness on the edges. Went better with food than alone.

  • Cork was wet through and through - was musty upon opening, light on the palate, sour cherries. Compared to other notes, not a good showing. Purchased through Brentwood.

  • Blind OLD WORLD GRAB BAG - Dino Restaurant (Washington, DC): Could tell from the color that this was an older wine guessed mid 90’s with noticeable CF. Nose of red cherry, wet animal fur, some gym shoe aspect that I noticed this morning, but overall I really liked the nose and found it the highlight of the wine. The palate on the other hand had cherry, leather, underbrush, greenish, with some tannin going on. Made the comment that I could smell this all night as long as I didn’t have to drink it.

  • Old World Grab Bag (Dino Restaurant, Washington, DC): Not decanted, opened for an hour. The nose starts out at the wrong end of a wet dog (which many of us found very endearing actually) but transitions toward something more like blood sausage. Even in the mouth, fruit is present but it is background only to a swirl of compost, cedar, meat and musk. Although I pegged this as a bottle I brought, this was tasted blind, and after the reveal 20 minutes later, and the most animal tones in this had blown off, the fruit actually was more in the foreground and didn't seem as dried out. Long finish, long craving for more after. I'm sure this would have scored higher if I had spent a couple hours with it.

  • Old World Grab Bag (Dino Restaurant - Washington, DC): Right off the bat, unmistakeably Left bank. Cigar box, cedar box, blackberry with some barnyard elements. A finish that lasted until the following morning. Incredibly deep and persistent. Being with this wine is like chilling in the library of some old school English masion, surrounded by old books with a fire roaring, laid back in a comfy old leather chair, reading a classic, with a dog sleeping at your feet. Age this as long as you care to.

  • shock to find that this botlle still have much life left, still evolving after all those years. The fruitful nose was present. On the palate, love the velvety dark chololate. Finish was quite complex and kept building. Wonderful wine

  • This was showing more youthful than I was expecting it to be. Crimson with a hint of bricking on the edges. This took a while to open up and didn't really start strutting it's stuff for a couple of hours. Nose has a bit of barnyard, leather, pencil lead, dark fruit, and crushed stone. Good dark fruit and minerality on the palate. Still has good acidity and a firm tannic backbone. I would never guess this to be 19 years old. This will easily go another 5-7 years.

  • On travel, finding a room in small hotel by lake Geneva. The wine list contains a Clerc Milon for abour 40 Euros. This price list must have been forgotten the last 10 years. The wine is absolutely fantastic, both open and smooth and restrained at the same time. Very complex nose of spice and dark fruits. Very ripe and giving, but with a picnh of acidity. Made me happy at least. the 89 was slightly more wild and crazy btw.

  • Acquired by me at auction several years ago and had been resting in cellar conditions since. Fill was base neck. Upon opening, the cork was mushy and seemed too delicate for an ah-so. I used a winekey and broke the cork in half. I was worried to say the least. However, once I got it open, it smelled right and my fears were assuaged. SOMd for about 1.5 hours and poured. Dead give away as aged Bordeaux. Had that regal nose of truffled, earthy red fruit that I immediately associate with Pavie, but carried classic notes of lead pencil that I associate with Pauillac. The wine was fully integrated, showing very nice (but not exquisite) mouthfeel and a somewhat muted finish. I think with the cork being how it was, that this wine is capable of a bit more on the pallate but alas, you don't always get a pristine bottle. It was my favorite of the night, as I prefer this style over a more boisterous (but polished) red.

  • Outstanding! Beautiful color; no brick edges. Nose was well developed. Fruit still very evident with a long finish. Seems to be on a nice plateau now. Was concerned since the cork was wet all the way to the top; fill level was low neck.

  • nose: classic pauillac on the nose with sweet cassis, pencil lead, lots of underlying black and red cherries, anise, and some ripe undertones of red fruits. Plush, but still very much bordeaux showing off that 90 sweetness that I love. Lots of depth that just draws you in with some understated power behind it.

taste: nice tannins that are upfront but then melt quickly on the palate, but still provide some firmness with pencil lead, sweet cassis, red and black cherries, a good helping of dark red fruits, and some leather with deft balance

overall: Before this, I had yet to be impressed by clerc. It was always a nice bordeaux that brought out classic pauillac flavors and had good balance. Here, everything is amped up about clerc just enough to make this beautiful. In a perfect place right now as the weight on the palate is perfect in a medium/full style that has a refined nature to it and gives off a nice and long leather and dark red fruit finish

  • This wine has matured well. Just turning a slight brown around the edges, it was filled with ripe fruits. The wine was solid, the tannins having mellowed nicely, with a 15+ second finish. Excellent QPR. 94.

  • Best of the night, by a good margin (on a really good competition night) until we opened the 91 Hill of Grace. Beautiful, appropriately aged bordeaux. A few more good years on this. Still some nice dark fruit although predominantly earthy tones, dark character. Not at all brickish - drinking wonderfully.

  • The number of aged Bordeaux I've drunk I can count without having to take off my shoes, but a couple of the things I've found appealing in others is the lead pencil and forest floor. This one didn't have those, but it did have really nice cassis/mushroom and good structure. Yes, horsey upon opening, but that dissapated and I was very happy to try this.

  • Steaks, Cab, and Friends (Issaquah, WA): This seemed to need more time to open. At first pour the nose was dominated by horse, but with time it blew off to show an aged nose of dried herbs. The palate was balanced with lush fruit and a wonderful tannic core running through it. I found it to be fairly simple but to end on a high note with spicy tannic finish.
