Still too young! Typical characteristics of the 2005 vintage. Backwards and tannic! Despite being 18 years old, it seems like it is only a few years old! Decanted for 12 hours. I think it still needs 5-10 years further aging to be at its plateau.
Anticipated maturity 2026 to 2032.

[served blind. my guess was mid-aughts for vintage; as for AOC, i suspected right bank as the Merlot was very present].
deep ruby and garnet rim in the glass. complex and perfumed in the nose: dried rose, cedar shavings, and tobacco waft thru the aromas of macerated cassis and blueberry. juicy, fleshy and round in mouth, the fruit has a supple, silky texture against the very polished tannins. earthy, spice, and dark cocoa notes grow in the mid palate. long, nuanced persistence.
well-developed and likely at peak with another handful of years of enjoyment ahead.
13.5% AbV; equal shares of CS and Merlot (48%), with the rest (4%) PV

A superb bottle in great condition, compared to an earlier tasting note 29 Sept '19. On this occasion the wine was darker, denser, richer. A deep, engaging nose, seamless palate and long finish. Wonderful expression of a dry, savoury wine full of elegant spice and floral lift, at the prefect palate weight of 13.5% abv.

The wine looks ruby colored with browny edges. It still has some fruity notes, but age has made it more smooth. The wine is full bodied with a medium acidity and a hint of oak. There is some heavy sediment in the bottle.

First experienced this wine a year ago in Switzerland. We loved it then and it’s still amazing today. Tobacco, spice, cedar, dark fruit, wonderfully integrated and balanced.
Perhaps it was due to the fact that we PNPed, but this was not the same Pavillon Rouge that I have enjoyed in the past. It might also be that the wine (which has been sitting in the same spot since it arrived in 2008) has shut down. It was not disjointed or lacking balance or unpleasant, but it was just not showing its "stuff." I look forward to my remaining bottles.

A birthday celebration at Wimborne. Drank over 2+ hours in Grassl 1855. Popped and poured. So took quite a bit of air to get going. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity wiith aromas of cedarwood, fragrnt spice, deep red plums. Earthiness with more air. Developing. On the palate, dry, juicy high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), fine silky high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of cedarwood, nicely grilled belle pepper, fine spice, deep red plums, deep red cherries. Long spiced finish. Very good quality. A Margaux of refinement rather than oomph. Still a good long life ahead in this strong vintage.

The nose jumps out of the glass with raspberry, cherry, plum, some blackcurrant, vanilla, cedar, dark chocolate, pencil lead, liquorice, old leather, and some herb (is it thyme?). Ripe, taught tannins and a long finish. There is some good concentration and it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Just outstanding! This bottle has been in the cellar for several years waiting for my retirement. Very nice from the nose with subtle fruit, pencil shavings, and bit of cedar through the full finish. Completely integrated. Garnet color and a silky texture to the experience. Drinking well now for sure, will probably integrate the tannins a bit more, but not sure it will improve much above where it sits today. I should have bought a couple bottles when I had the chance at a lower price point. Even at current price point - this is worth the price. Enjoy!

Drank one bottle in 2 sittings, 6 months apart in 2020.
Why you may ask?
Because upon first tap with Coravin it was very restrained, seeming like it was nowhere ready to drink, differing from the glowing reports from our CT peers. So I let it rest some more and came back to it 6 months later, with a quick tap and boy did it EVOLVE! First sip was like the Hallelujah chorus! Majestic, radiant and joyful.
Beautiful opaque rich red garnet color with waves of sweet cassis fruit on the nose. Palate had perfect weight mid to full bodied with plush rich cabernet driven flavours that matches the nose precisely, delivering great satisfaction with every elegant juicy sip. Tannins are still present but playing a supporting role. Had no problem pulling the still supple cork.
Uh-mazing with pan seared Prime aged NY Strip Steak.
Thrilled to have 2 more bottles. Outstanding!

Garnet in color gave some indication that this has years left and it really does. nose was good but it was the strength and finish this has on the palate that stood out. Tannins are just starting to integrate and the finish went on. Wish I had more.

Smooth, harmonious, mature claret, with some sweet strawberry and floral top notes. A more gentle and less astringent reflection of the Medoc. It has some of that formal elegance that shows its Margaux heritage and lends itself to the dining table. Despite all that I do have a reservation, it doesn’t quite impress enough, particularly at its price point.

Philly Wine Group Top French Wines Themed Dinner (The Prime Rib, Philadelphia): Decanted for 1-2 hours at the restaurant. Medium to dark opaque garnet color with no sign of age. Nose has some violets, vanilla and tobacco. Medium- acidity and tannin. Chewy mouth feel. Mostly tobacco, blackberry and cassis in the flavor profile with a medium length finish. This was very good with the lamb rack as expected but was remarkable with the Au Gratin potatoes.

Quite reluctant to give much at first, this takes 2 hours in the decanter to start opening into a plummy, pencil-driven wine with subtle wildflower accents. But the nose remains reserved with a low-medium aromatic volume. In time, suspect this will unwind nicely. Nice presence on the palate and fine tannins bode well for the future.

Opened this afternoon. Very astringent finish initially with lots of oak and ash. The nose initially was worthy of a 96. Wildflowers, herb-rich, sweet fruit, but quite a bit of oak. Palate was soft, yet rather powerful. Wild herb, black cherry, fig, ash, sweet tobacco and rather complex. Would have gone perfectly with a marinated pork loin and herb roasted potatoes. Still getting quite a bit of astringency and acidity on the finish. Capable of so much more. Goes to show you the structure of the second wine of Ch Margaux!

Another wonderful effort by Chateau Magaux. It was the red WOTN. This was from 375ml, but still needs some time in the bottle. The wine will also benefit from a decant. It was fresh and bright right from the start. But, once it opened up, it coated the mouth with its balanced combination of red and dark fruit that had just that wonderful hint of sweetness. The finish was enjoyably long. I can't wait to taste its bigger sibling. I have just started to drink my 2005s within the last few weeks. They seem to be in a really good place right now - so enjoy.

For me the wine is not ready yet. I found it a little aggressive, quite high acidity and with a piercing aroma of 'burnt' licorice. Floral notes and berry fruit but rather focused and not very open yet. Still I believe it has potential.

Lovely Margaux perfume of cassis, lilacs, scorched earth, sweet tobacco. Deep crimson color, fills the palate but slightly one dimensional, dark red fruits mid palate, excellent balance, long cassis dominated finish for a medium to full bodied wine. Still needs time to develop secondary notes.

Decanted and drank over an hour. Probably needed a couple of hours in the decanter. Nose of cedars, sweet tobacco, raspberries and candied flowers, supple entry on the palate, decent weight and acidity but not as complex as I expected. Decent finish with tannins well coated by the dark red fruits. Next bottle I will let breathe in the decanter much longer and will re-rate the wine accordingly.

Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #016: Bordeaux 2005 ... How does it show now? (By VD): Creamy bouquet with a firm dose of oak, ripe red berries and cherries, cassis, cedar and coffee. Very luxurious. On the palate creamy and lush, beautiful oak, beautifully fresh acidity, juicy dark forest fruits and some pleasant sweetness. Some coconut as well. Overall a very harmonious, juicy and round, luxurious mouth filling wine with still slightly sticky tannin which seems to become more locked with more air. This wine might have a longer life than expected in CT at this moment. 92 - 94+

Nose: Tobacco leaf, eucalyptus, hints of tar, bright red fruit, herbaceous notes. Palate: On the attack, cranberry tartness, bright cherries, along with hints of dark, dusty cassis. An interesting juxtaposition of fruit types. Fairly muted mid-palate, not revealing anything new but some detectable pencil lead and very, very faint hints of ripe cassis. Anise and tar linger on the incredibly long finish.
Texturally bereft, this came off as flat at the outset and produced no subsequent tannic structure. Time and air revealed some very elegant elements that ultimately made this a more subtle and cerebral drink. Did I enjoy the 2012 Leonetti that was sitting next to it more? Definitely. But this was eminently enjoyable.

This was a little tight at first, but opened up after a few hours of air. Highly structured wine. This was deep, rich, and elegant. Very balanced though, so it never felt too concentrated or over the top. Silky tannins kept everything in check. For my palate, this is just beginning to enter its drinking window, I think it has some more positive development left, but is close. I will revisit in a year or 6 months. This will be very good. 91+

A good wine, but doesn't knock my socks off for the expected quality out of this Château and for the price. Will improve with a couple more years of aging, tannins could settle in a bit more. Originally bought on 2005 futures for $110. On the nose, lots of cedar, good black cherry fruit concentration along the backbone, hint of cooked red berries, fig, freshly turned earth, bitter chocolate, dry granite. Palate matches nose, tannins a little disconnected but overall well integrated, will remedy with time.

I decantered this for 4 hours before drinking. It needed it - I had a sip straight after opening and it was tight and tannic. A rich and powerful wine and yet elegant too. Good balance between tannins and fruit and impressive texture. This wine still has years to develop and I have 18 bottles left so I am going to enjoy these over the next 10 years or more!

Loads of woody tannins up-front upon opening, but in 30 min this becomes extremely balanced, cigar box, baseball field dirt (slid head first enough to know what that tastes like), dark cherry, and a creamy silky textured finish. This is quite good, but honestly not worth the money. Drinks well now, I'd drink up over the next several years.

Retirement lunch at Cap Grille for my dear friend Laura on January 7th... Wine opens with subtle nose, classic Margaux accents, vanilla, cherry and leather she comes together making a wonderful pairing with our lamb chops and porterhouse steak. She loses some intensity as the hours drag, I'd consume the next bottle within an hour or so. Decent length, but nothing close to her big sister. You can tell it's Margaux, but i'd say Margaux light. I found their 2009 third wine a better value and far better potential than this Pavillon. Not to say it's bad at all, just better than most second wines, and probably a bit expensive for what it is.

Margaux Dinner, Harvard Fly Club: With all the hoopla over the 2005 vintage that the critics stoked up, I was expecting something bolder and more flamboyant. Perhaps I had the wrong impression of what they meant to convey. What I found was somewhat calm but very elegantly balanced claret. I daresay quite classically styled, with cherry, leather, forest floor profiles, supported by good acidity. Tannins seem integrated. A slightly faltering finish mars otherwise an excellent wine.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #084; Margaux (By RG): Beautiful and deep bouquet with very luxurious oak and good cassis. Also some youthful lactic impressions. On the palate mainly dark and also some red forest fruit, vanilla and round tannin which becomes more and more sticky after the wine gets more airtime. It is probably wise to give this wine more cellar time until approx 2020.

Good color featuring notes of red fruit, vanilla, chocolate and spice. Tannins are noticeable, but soft and approachable. Flavors of vanilla, cherry and chocolate with a ncie finish. Turns just a bit austere through the finish. The fruit is really nice, but new world in style. None of us guessed Bordeaux here.

Decanted for 2+ hours. Would recommend a little longer. Nose was beautiful bright red fruits, especially strawberry, floral, with a hint of stone and vanilla. Color was bright red/purple at the core, lighter around the edge. On the palate, bright and young with tart red fruit, particularly cherry. Slightly tannic, but nice tannins, a little more acid than fruit, but generally good balance. Needs a little more time to fully integrate, but very enjoyable. Very feminine and elegant like Margaux should be.

Big disappointment. Maybe this was consumed without enough aeration given that we simply popped and poured the bottle. So while the wine did improve over the course of the evening, I felt it lacked any meaningful middle palate and the finish was not much more than mouth numbing. I would have expected more fruit, better integration and finish.

My patience ran out and decided to pop this beauty..extreamly dark ruby in color...Once the the cork was poped I knew it was open for business..The aromatics of this wine was outrageous..Dark fruit, dark chocalate, baked spices and a wonderful floral component filled my glass...Palate: Dark fruit along with spice and chocalate but things changed on the mid palate, I got some creamy oak and a green tea component on the backend...Extreamly well balanced with fine grained tannins...The merlot really stood out which gave this wine a very silky mouthfeel..It is drinking well now but has a long life ahead of it...I will be adding a few in the near future..Cheers!!!

The first of my 2005 collection. Just a baby but already the class of the vintage shines through. The colour is a lovely bright ruby. The nose is slightly restrained, but the quality of the fruit with the blackberry softness of the merlot coming through clearly. On the palate it was surprisingly soft but of course had not evolved the subtleties that will undoubtedly be there in 10 years or so. Great balance- it is going to be a lot of fun following this one over its life. Impossible for me to score this at this stage as I do not normally drink such class so young.

This whopper is still too early to drink, but we wanted to try it anyway. After two hours in the carafe, it was still a little too tight, but as it opened up over the evening, it unfolded some of its future charms. Dark fruit, tobacco, black cherry, hints of licorice. Being an adolescent, it wasn't very communicative and although pleasant to drink, it wasn't until the following morning when it revealed more of its power: a velvetty, unctuous dark berry, leather ... very heady and promising. But there's no way I'll open another before 2014.

Beautiful wine with fabulous scents of crushed flowers, dried berries, oak, shaved chocolate, and spice box. Really smooth and refreshing palate gushing with black cherry, oak and hints of green tea. This is all based on a second day tasting. It did not rate this high on the first day. Strong tannins, detectable alcohol, very nice balance and finish. This wine is very good now, but it has some growing up to do.

Enjoy!

Wine for Birthday!

On the palate it was surprisingly soft but of course had not evolved the subtleties that will undoubtedly be there in 10 years or so. Great balance- it is going to be a lot of fun following this one over its life. Impossible for me to score this at this stage as I do not normally drink such class so young.

2005 Bordeaux: Episode 2 (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Perfumey aromas against a backdrop of sour cherries, earth, bay leaf, and pain grille. Even though this is second wine, it still shows its pedigree with notes of sour cherries, red currants, rose water, and blackberries. WA 91-93, WS 92.

2005 Bordeaux Report: Episode 2 (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): The nose shows a lot of ripe Merlot character with notes of plums and berries. The palate is so seductive with very soft sweet berry fruit and tannins. A beautifully balanced feminine expression of Margaux that is drinking great right now. Excellent.

Very fine 2005. Very nice ruby red color, The smell is soooo full of fruits. Cream, red berries, cassis. Surprisingly full bodied for a 2nd wine. Very fine wine. Makes me fall more into 2005 vintage

BORDEAUX 2005 / Cabernet rules; 4/5/2006-4/10/2006 (Bordeaux): Clocked in at ... 14%
alcohol, with 48% Merlot, 48% Cabernet
Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot, this wine showed a deep color and exuded plum-like fruit, with a fairly full body but also a tad simple in profile, and some drying tannins on the back end. Not one of my favorite second wines, actually. Left an impression of being one dimensional, but not without some appeal! 87-90+

2005 Bordeaux en Primeur; 3/26/2006-3/28/2006 (Bordeaux France): En Primeur tasting. Big and bold aromas and flavors with black plum, sweet spice and cassis. Well balanced. Less nuanced vs many others this trip. Good+ 88-90 point potential.
