Rather simple creation. Lacks botrytis the presence of which was expected in a wine from Sauternes. Being just sweet and tasty is not enough in this price category. Sugar is cheap.

Tasted from a quarter bottle left in the fridge since July (3 months ago). Unbelievably the colour showed no darkening, bouquet subdued but on the palate it was still super fresh. Unbelievable. This will last centuries.
Golden colour. Gorgeous sultana and honey flavours. Rich, mouth-coating palate with some lively acidity. Long, lovely legs. Finished clean with a surprisingly dry finish. Perfect time to drink.

This remains one of the most consistent producers of wine of ANY genre in the world; I almost feel like I take their greatness for granted. Lots of reviews so I don't need to dwell on my own notes, suffice to say the wine is indeed in peak drinking window now as others have pointed out. It's at an interesting inflection point, where the secondary sweet elements are still expressive - marzipan, caramel, almond, but the wine has just ever so slightly started to turn dry. I sense a lighter intensity here than the amazing 2001 version of this wine, so I suspect it has probably 7 to 10yrs left before it starts to change profoundly. We drank this over several nights and it held up very well, perhaps just losing a step on the 6th night (which is admittedly long to keep it open). World class all the way.
Enormously concentrated in the bouquet and on the palate; orange peel, apricots, honey and some vanilla. Concentrated sweetness and good acidity. Quite overwhelming.

Dinner with Diego & Frederica (The Library, Crown Wine Cellars, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): I drank such a lovely bottle last weekend, I couldn't help but re-visit the experience with other friends tonight. I won't repeat my note of 7/16/2022 but there is something really great about this wine at this stage in its life because it is somewhere on the boundary of classic Sauternes and just a slightly more honeyed dry white wine. Hard to put into words. Its lighness - or 'finesse' might be a better word - make it very easy to drink a 750ml, which is not always the case with Sauternes even of the highest quality. Great stuff!

Family Lunch with the Lais and Alams (The Conservatory, Crown Wine Cellars, 18 Deep Water Bay Drive, Shouson Hill, Hong Kong): Decanted for 5 hours. Very deep burnished copper-gold colour. Palate is gorgeous deep semi-sweet Manuka honey. Emphasis is on the 'semi' in semi-sweet. Rich reverberent and resonant on a long heady and contemplative finish. As another recent CTer has observed (same day, different end of the world) this went beautifully with some really nice Cuban cigars and a great chat with 2 special friends. 92+

Just shared a lovely 375 over lunch with sourdough toast and ‘Rustique’ Camembert. Perfect combination to be experienced. Everything your would expect dried fruit hint of orange luscious but not oily. I wonder if the is the Camembert doing it’s magic.

A beautiful wine, energetic and fresh with Meyer lemon, fresh sugar, frangipane, almond, and a subtle savory element. This is drinking really nicely now but should evolve pleasurably over many decades. 93+

1990s Burgundy, part one (Noize): Half bottle, served blind. We did sort-of manage to guess what this was. Sweet custard apple, unctuous and yet also pretty weightless, honey, creme brulee. Really lovely.

Deep golden colored with some soft brownish notes. Pineapple, almonds, honey and dried peach in the nose. On the palate dried apricot, sweetened orange, soft nutty notes, caramel bonbon and a touch of smoke. Medium bodied with a medium acidity. Good depth and structure, powerful mouth feeling. Good complexity but somehow it feels a little unbalanced to me. Nice medium long finish. Not one of my favorites from Sauternes, but a beautiful wine and definitely worth a try. Around 72,000 bottles were produced. (IG)

Singapore dinner with my friends Seb and Romain. After a nice red flight (montrose 2012, smith haut lafitte 2012 and Canon 2009), we are finishing this excellent evening with a Sauternes favourite. A beautiful honey gold Color. A lot of honey, nuts and ginger on the nose. Med+ acidity, Med body, Med alcohol, Med+ flavor intensity, Med+ finish. Still young but already tasting beautifully. A bit sirupy but nice acidity to offset it. Nice sweet fruit. Excellent and great value for money.

Great dessert wines are one of life’s secret pleasures. Not enough people seem to try them all the better for those of us that do regularly. Whilst this wine is everything you would expect with powerful dry fruits on the nose, a really clear deep amber colour in the bottle, in the mouth it is so intense and unctuous with amazing length . I prefer something with just a little more lift and some freshness, rather less cloying but you certainly not be complaining. Over 2 nights my wife drank most of this 375ml and I most of the Doisy-Daene 2011

for a number of years I have felt I have too many really sweet top quality dessert wines in my cellar. The problem is they are just such great vallue and just so good. Occasionally I share a half bottle(37.5cl) over 2 days or so with my wife 'en homage' to the recently passed Michael Broadbent. So tasting note, I blend some very strong blue cheese with equal cream cheese for a sort of mouse and it was just the perfect accompaniment to a sweet complex wine with dark honey colour, dried fruit with a marmalade lift towards the end. The length even with the very strong blue cheese mouse was substantial and well over 20 seconds.
Right on the front end of its drinking window. Out of .375 this is spot on. Crisp acidity and bright fruits this fabulous QPR bottle has a long life ahead, of my wife can keep her hands off!

From half, and alongside a half of 05 over four days. If I had caught this when it was younger and perhaps had more acid, I might have really liked this. This was not as rich as 05, but had a leaner mouthfeel, and its honey notes might have been a bit fresher before, too. Merely pleasant. I can achieve the same effect here for so much less.

HDH annual Bordeaux tasting: Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Chicago, IL): A pronounced almond note on the nose and palate here. There's also something that feels a little nutty (like oxidation) but to be clear it's not due to premox or somesuch. The palate doesn't have the acid vein that the 2011 has, and in fact, this feels just a little clumsy because of it.

A good but probably not terrific Rieussec. Right amount of sweetness but just missing a bit more verve and lift and acidity or exotic fruit spectrum to make it truly exciting. Or possibly bottle age to turn more into liquid caramel. I would probably be holding those for 5 years plus and see how it develops.

At last this is opening up and showing some development - superb balance with a lovely cut of freshness through the mid-palate. The sweetness seems to have backed off a touch, much to the benefit of the wine.

Quick notes- honey is the name of the game, some spice and toffee hints too (think bit-o-honey), plus notes of stone fruits and hints of citrus, no real discernable tropical elements. Rieussec is never bad, but was expecting more complexity. Overall Evaluation: A- (91).

Everything good Sauternes should be. Burnt caramel, apricots, very long but not cloying... some acidity to balance the strong concentrated tropical fruit hit. Ok, so not a subtle wine - I tried R 99 and 05 recently and they had a more complex aftertaste but really enjoying this and will be interesting to figure out whether to drink the rest of the case soon rather than cellar

High quality Sauternes. A rich, pure and fruity vintage, this still feels a bit young. Had the 2008 two years ago and I much prefer the 2008 vintage; the 2007 shows less acidity and not as much of the classy almond/marzipan touch that Rieussec often has. Maybe that will come with more bottle age. The 2009 Suduiraut tasted alongside also felt much fresher. Still a classy Sauternes though. - 91 points

Having recently tried 1999, 2006 and now 2007, I think the 2007 was my favourite. It’s not as heavy as the 1999 but is a bit fresher and more lifted. Will have to get more of it!

Small Sauternes 2007 tasting - all from half bottle. Doisy Daene, Lafaurie Peraguey, Rieussec and Suduiraut. DD and Rieussec lean expression. All very good. Rieussec on the light side in color but still golden yellow; the leanest of the lot, slightly tart, less sweetness than the others; much in line with typical Rieussec, which is not my favourite, however well made

Cooked apricot and flowers on the nose; apricot on the palate. This was opened, recorked, and held in the refrigerator for several weeks. I liked it better as it became slightly oxidized. I would rate it in the low 90's.

Aged Beef Dinner (Pine Close): Pretty good, and nice with cheese, but this 375ml has not moved much over the last few years. Still painfully young, the nose was replete with layers of treacle and honey, dried apricots spiked with citrus peel and plenty of Rieussec's high-toned spice. The palate was still sweet with youth, showing golden honey and oodles of yummy sweet spices infused into a mouthful of dried stone fruit flavours. A bit on the primary side, but this was very supple, with bright acidity keeping the wine light on its feet. Finishes nicely, with a touch of mineral and toasty spices. Many years needed yet, but this should make a nice if not great Rieussec.

working with wine 2016 seminar 2 - sweet wines (Hilton Hotel, Sydney): Medium minus intensity aromas of cream, vanilla, butter, apricot jam, almost jubey notes but with a touch o meatiness…quite zesty on the palate, apricot is the dominant note with some orange peel and pith as well as light bitterness and concentrated sweet spice - almost Christmas cake here - very big and boisterous. the lack of intensity on the nose is misleading

The wine has a pronounced aroma of dried mango, dried banana skin, orange and lemon peel, vanilla, coconut and marzipan. The wine is aromatic, complex and developing.
On the palate the wine is sweet with high acidity, high alcohol, full bodied, pronounced flavours and a long finish. The high acidity is a great balance to the high alcohol and sweetness - a beautiful sweet wine.
Outstanding quality Sauternes.

Sauternes - too delicious for words, really. Still, here are a few: wonderful, luscious, sublime, etc etc. This gorgeous little bottle was no exception, exhibiting all of what you'd expect and hope for: mandarin, apricot, honey, toast/vanilla, and an incredible creme brulé finish. Everything was pretty well in check and the wine is (very easily) drinkable now, though I'd say it could use more time to become truly mindblowing. Good thing I have another bottle tucked away! (Though I think I've been spoiled by the '89 I had at Noble Rot - may never recover!)

Golden, leggy; tropical fruit and lanolin with a touch of honeysuckle; quite light for Rieussec, decent complexity and length, not particularly botrytised, comes across as a well made wine in a so so vintage, youthful but I can't see it gaining the complexity or having the staying power of the 86 at weekend. Just about F (17.5).

Tasted double blind. Intense suntan lotion, cocoa butter, orange, marzipan nose. Luscious coconut and vanilla barrel influence, almost like a rum. Fat, creamy, nearly unctuous texture. Some seaweed or oyster complexity, quite oceanic. Not my preferred style, but delicious nonetheless and really hit the spot tonight. I guessed a top tier 2003 Sauternes.

Flickinger tasting. Very complex; ripe tropical fruits, honey, with fine components of fruit, minerals and acid to give it a solid backbone. Should hold for many many years -- it needs at least 10 to really come together.

Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL): After having the 2001 a while ago, I really wanted to like this, but the best I can muster is "meh". This had a lot of candied and fresh citrus peel aromas and flavours. Very sweet, but with a texture that isn't oily or thick at all -- that actually struck me as kind of weird. A bit of marzipan on the finish, as well as a little burn from the alcohol.

Yeah yeah yeah great, sweet brilliant, whatever. This is all cliche at the moment - I do wonder how these pro wine critics can go to a serving of 100 Sauternes and not write "coconut, honey, marzipan, orange peel" for all the wines.
Anyway, here goes....
Coconut, honey, marzipan, orange peel".
Lovely stuff - but tastes like most other Sauternes I've ever had. Maybe my palate is not geared up for the nuances of these wines when I drink them once every 18 months.
A Comparative Bordeaux blends tasting (France, NZ, US etc) with Peter: Aromas of Rieussec brown sugar with honey, peach and vanilla. I found this way too primary and quite tough in its big, structured, big boned style. I'm sure that all of the material is there, but this wine needs 5-10 years to integrate and come together.

Brian's Birthday Surprise (Extra Space Boon Keng, Singapore): I really should stop killing off these bottles in their infancy, but they are so easy to yummy and easy to drink, especially in the 375ml format. It was still a bright golden yellow in colour, and the nose was still clearly that of a very young Sauternes, with rich honeyed tones and sweet aromas of lemon tart and more exotic tropical notes of lychees and pine apples, then some treacle and butterscotch and a touch of coconut - more of the roasted variety than the desiccated coconut notes of a young d'Yquem - I have always found the nose on this to be a more exotic, expressive Rieussec, and this bottle was no different. The palate had the lovely balance of the 2007 vintage that I like very much, with sweet lemony acidity lending the wine's rich flavours of lychees and longans, and sweet treacle and honey well delineated and focused, all the way into a long finish infused with warm Rieussec spice. This was very good indeed, with a really solid sense of depth and texture, yet the lovely balance and poise meant that it was drinking very nicely in its youth. This will no doubt be a lovely wine in say 20-25 years' time and will age effortlessly for decades. I hope I have the patience to hold on to at least a few bottles until then though! 93+

Very sweet and very well balanced by the great 2007-acidity. More so than in other modern vintages for Rieussec, which I sometimes feel is too sweet and too heavy. THis is great, and can easily be drunk now. More tropical fruit and less glue and botrytis on the nose. Lovely!

Generous floral nose, unctuous and decently balanced on the palate. Not the 2005, but very decent and drinkable. At this price point, is an excellent choice for a dessert wine with foods that may overwhelm a more complex and delicate Sauternes, such as foie gras and Roquefort cheese. This one has the strength to stand up to such rich or strongly flavored accompaniments, where a more subtle wine would be a waste.

Thanks therhonestore for the share. Huge legs on brilliant white gold. Nose is dusty pine nuts, almond, marzipan, crepe suzette, orange marmalade, opening a can of fresh tennis balls. Taste is more tannic, sweet and fresh peach, low acid, sweet sugar, big sugar cube, dried pineapple, peach cobbler. Long finish with low barrel tannic balance and low acid balance. Still not cloying so in that way, this wine has depth- flavors reach into dark corners. It's a tough one to dissect and that makes it fun and mysterious. Great all around.

Impressive texture - feather-like and light on the mouth - this hides its power and depth very well, with the flavours unfolding in the mouth over a long period. Impressive.
Flight 1, Bordeaux, Wine 8 (blind): The wine was medium yellow/golden in colour. It offered quince, orange marmalade, peach, Panettone, some honey and botrytis spice on the nose. On the palate the full-bodied wine showed quince, apricot, pineapple, honey, caramel, cane sugar, spices and a smoky finish, with luscious sweetness, medium-plus acidity and exceptional length. The expressive wine showed great balance, concentration and complexity. I liked it a lot. My favourite wine of the flight.

Very pale yellow-green color - surprisingly light for a Sauternes. Rather light and restrained nose with aromas of honey, apple blossom, some apricot pit and a hint of creaminess. The full-bodied palate is markedly less backward than the nose with rich flavors of peach jam, tangerine marmalade, white syrup and ripe honeydew melon. The oak characteristics of vanilla and cedary wood are really prominent and at times even dominate the palate, stripping the wine of its complexity and making it seem a bit more simple than it really is. Still, the wine is quite tasty and delicious, although a bit heavy and ponderous, due to its rather modest acidity. The finish is quite short and also a tad light compared to the middle palate. There are flavors of honeydew melon, bitter wood, some vanilla and a little peach marmalade in the aftertaste - along with a hint of alcohol warmth.
A good, rich and tasty Sauternes, but also a bit boring and lacking in personality. Probably the wine is just too infantile right now and in dire need of further aging. Pales in comparison to Carmes de Rieussec 2009, the 2nd wine of the house. I wouldn't return to this in less than a decade in hopes that the wine would gain more depth, complexity and personality. Now the wine offers nothing that would set it apart from any other basic-level Sauternes of 2007. Not really worth the 50,23€ (for a 75 cl bottle).

Had it next to Yquem 1997 and it did alright actually. Dare I say better balance than the Yquem? The Rieussec was very elegant, much more than normally found in Rieussec, no doubt due to the perfect vintage. 2007 really is great, producing high acidity, complementing Rieussec's style of full fat fruit. Easy to drink, still very primary nose obviously, but sitting really well on the palate. Glides down in perfect balance, smooth as silk and luscious texture.

Dinner at Jade Palace (Jade Palace, Forum Galleria): Really excellent. We hardly drink our Sauternes young, so the fact that four half bottles of this has disappeared from the cellar over the last couple of years says something about how delicious this wine is even in its infancy. Decanted for 3 hours, it had a rather expressive nose, with little drizzles of petroleum over rich scents of raw honey and treacle, white flowers, fragrant chinese pears and lots of sweet tangerine aromas, layered over with a little touch of sweet oak and dessciated coconut. With a bit more time, we even got a little streak of the mineral and spice notes one normally associates with older Rieussecs. The palate too really benefited from the extended decanting, showing more complexity than one would expect from such a young Sauternes, with strong citrus notes on the attack (tons of lemons, orange peel and candied tangerines), opening up into peach and apricots on the midpalate, and then another crunch of sweet pear and lots of honey and brown sugar packed beneath the fresh fruit notes. What really impressed me again though was how wonderfully balanced with fresh, well-integrated acidity this was, so that it was very drinkable even though 20 years too young and still packed with sweetness. It finished nicely too, with a little lick of Rieussec spice - cardammon and cloves - some sour plum notes, and a touch of earthiness at the very base. Delicious. I really must keep the rest of the bottles away, because this has the potential to become a truly great wine in time.

Big, bold, rich, thick, concentrated and filled with honey drenched, tropical fruit, citrus rind, apricot, orange blossom and vanilla, the wine is still primary and wants more time. If you cannot keep your hands off it, enjoy it for its fresh fruit, honey, spice, creme brulee and nutty personality. At maturity, I imagine it'll deserve another point or two.

Deep but youthful gold colour. Monolithic on the nose, tight ripe apricot fruit lurking somewhere, but the dress is dominated by heavy, intense botrytis. Full bodied palate, tight, not giving much, very concentrated botrytis and sultana flavours lead on to a tight, mineral, inky finish. Good acidity backs up the entire package. Infanticide and not really fair to rate it now, this needs time, plenty of it. 90++

I am new to the world of Sauternes but we opened this bottle as part of a Bordeaux palate education evening. Compared to D'Yquem which is the only other Sauternes I have tasted, I found this to be very sweet, without the balanced acidity that I loved in the D'Yquem. The color was yellow/gold, with a lovely aroma of honeysuckle and orange blossom. The mouth feel was very smooth and silky, the finish medium. However the flavors were muted by the big bang of sweetness, which was missing some acidity to balance the palate.

Lunch at Song of India (Song of India): A lovely young Sauternes, this was just about a perfect pairing with a range of North Indian curries, so much so that we wished we had more than a small 375ml - a rather rare occurrence for 5 people sharing a sweet Sauternes in its infancy. Still a light, youthful gold in colour, the wine nevertheless showed beautiful nose with a bit of complexity to it. This was full of perfumy, flowers, fresh peaches and cream, apricots and accents of earth and spice. Very nice. The palate was rich, sweet and nicely botrytised, with lovely creamily textured dollops of honey dripped over a core of peach and apricot flavours. There was a nice amount of acidity, lifting the voluptuous flavours towards a long, clove, cinamon and wood-spice filled finish. Lovely stuff. Good by its own, but when paired with spicy North Indian curries, this was quite transcendental. While I though the first two bottles were way too young, the youth of the wine, with all its fresh acidity and rich sweetness actually worked very well in the context of our meal.

We had this with moon cake for the mid Autumn festival here in Singapore, a fantastic pairing. The bouquet offered a vibrant nose of orange peel, citrus, ripe apple, honey and some fresh minty hints. Medium bodied with a long lasting finish, getting some caramel/ coffee like tastes on the mid palate. The finish is really long and highly enjoyable. This is a very elegant dessert wine that keeps the overall sugar in check. This will likely get more complex with further bottle ageing. Good value.

Rieussec Vertical (Vini di Domani, Eksel): Infanticide, of course. But interesting to taste, but hard to discribe. Good length, nuances of fresh pear and pineapple. Style is elegant and fresh. Liked it, don't know where it is going... 16,5/20

"Huat-Huat" Chinese New Year Dinner (Ana Lucia Grill, Serangoon Gardens): This was still showing the obvious sweetness of a Sauternes in its infancy, but boy it was enjoyable. Nose had a nice stream of coconut candy oak notes, ripe apricots, bitterscotch, honey even some cotton candy scents. Nice, but it was the impeccable balance on the palate that made this wine such a joy. There were gobs of ripe yellow fruit, dried apricots, honey and white chocolate, yet this remained fresh all the way into a long finish that showed a caramelled nuttiness with a little toast and spice. Very young, but impeccably balanced and very stylish. This should age into a lovely Sauternes if one can resist the temptation to drink them all up over the next 20 years.

A point of balance with the right measure of tangy lemon acidity , botrytis apricottish notes and clean minerality. Just the right dose of fresh oak too. Drinking now and quite refreshing.

Lovely golden yellow, not many tears (relatively low residual sugar?) Not giving much on the nose but served too cold! Almost offdry in its sweetness, med+ acidity and body. Notes of smokiness plus usual tropical and honeyed aromas. Its texture is the most interesting point as it is very fluid, unlike other Sauternes which tend to be cloying....this one is very "light" in its Sauterness....LOVE IT!

First of an en primeur case of 375ml bottles - this was a very nice young Sauternes. Good from a Riesling glass, but far, far better in a Riedel Sommelier Sauternes stem. Lovely nose showed flecks of burnt caramel, earthy mineral, spice and nectar, some little very Rieussec rubber bits, along with some roasted nut and flower scents. Enchanting. Palate had pitch perfect balance. Amongst the best I have had in any Rieussec young or old. Solid botrytised weight and depth was laced with fresh acidity, all forming a wonderful frame for lovely flavours of burnt sugar, more stony mineral, a undercurrant of peachy, apricotty fruit, a little touch of lemon curd, and a long, long finish full of spice and little sprinkles of bittersweet almond. Not the richest or the most unctious, but it was nevertheless a very complete wine. This was quite gorgeous. Glad I have quite a few more bottles of this left!

I prefer something with just a little more lift and some freshness, rather less cloying but you certainly not be complaining.

for a number of years I have felt I have too many really sweet top quality dessert wines in my cellar.

- 91 points

There were gobs of ripe yellow fruit, dried apricots, honey and white chocolate, yet this remained fresh all the way into a long finish that showed a caramelled nuttiness with a little toast and spice.
