7th of 12, opened 90 minutes then splash decanted, perfect cork and level - little changed from last bottle in August 21, youthful robe, fabulous nuanced flavour profile, tannins as yet unresolved well covered by fruit, fine grenache crunch, whiff of garrigue, yardstick quality and authoritative, upside yet, 10+ years. VF (18.5).

Complex nose of black fruits, blueberries, violets and roasted hazelnuts.
Serene mouth which unfolds a wine with high quality juice. I was expecting structural power but I got a Burgundian style, elegant and intense. Velvety wine, with seductive aromatic depth, we are in the scrubland and the undergrowth before being transported by the spices in a basket of black fruits like raspberry cream. Beautiful acid structure which gives a slender and fresh wine despite its density. Large ferruginous finish which continues over a good length.
Excellent wine, precise and pleasant.

An Impromptu Wine Night (Mostly Rhones) (Los Olivos, CA): I approached this bottle with some trepidation, given the massive variability which has characterized this case, but for once we were in luck. Clean and fruit-forward, laden with notes of smoked meat, plum, spice and flower petals. The mid-palate was a bit hollow, and the fruit was drying on the finish, small complaints after 2+ decades.

94 pts

There is a core of coffee here, you still sense the modern treatment, yet plenty of local feel, garrigue, sweet Grenache. Extremely well made, smooth operator, could be a favorite tonight - personally, I'm just missing the peasant look and feel. Bought on release and stored under perfect condition. 6 bottles opened, identical notes; have a couple left, will leave them be. #pensiondanmark

Decanted an hour. Dark color with dark fruits on the nose. Powerful wine that is still showing well for its age. Tannins have integrated and this is drinking really well now and should hold for some time. A-

Superb! Bought on release and cellared. Definitely worth the wait. Decanted and drank over 3 hours and never skipped a beat. Nose a little shy but palate was singing. Incredible depth of flavors - raspberries, cherries, licorice, spice, mineral, smoke, bacon fat. Super smooth, perfect balance, and a nice long addictive finish. This was simply heavenly and worth every penny. :)

Il n'y a pas de grand vin, que de grandes bouteilles veut l'adage! Celle-ci n'était pas au top, paraissant sur la pente descendante, manquant d'éclat. Pas mauvais, mais un peu fatigué.

Oak fully integrated and this has gathered to be a quite local wine with plenty of power behind, lots of garrigue and a juice, quite elegant style. Will live on. #JohnnyM

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Popped and poured. Deep garnet color. Deep, complex, sweet cherry and garrigue driven nose. On the palate rather polished. 14,5%, lots of Grenache sweetness, Cherry, garrigue, herbs. Very fine and firm tannin. If drunk at 14 degree, it is not hot and beautiful balanced. If it gets warmer, you can feel the heat, despite the high acidity. Very long and creamy. Certainly very good and close to great. 94-95

Quite charming with its spicy kirsch, cherry, garrigue, and peppery profile. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh, and refined, this is no longer at its peak and has started its slow decline. It is not urgent to finish it up, but if you are sitting on several bottles, you should be popping those corks.

It took over 2h in the decanter and the second glass for it to really be strutting it’s stuff.
I smelled Beautiful red fruit, pepper, fig, and all of the above plus leathery elements filled the palate.
The wine was an excellent color - really showed younger than it’s age. The tannins were still very present and really forward, making me think this still may have some growing to do which for a cnp is remarkable. The finish was medium plus / long.
Great wine.

Holiday Dinner with Todd G (Bobo - NYC): AT Bobo in NYC with Todd, a fantastic corkage friendly French Bistro in NYC. A holiday get together with a good friend provided the reason to open my last bottle of this vintage. Prior tasting in 2018...Cork came out clean...decanted for about 45 minutes prior to drinking.
Notes from 2018: "Rich ruby color. Ripe nose of blackberry, black raspberry, violets/floral, baking spice, savory/meats. Big wine throughout, has nice sweetness through the mid palate. Nuanced and long finish..."
Color nose and fruit profile consistent. The spices and savory notes through the mid palate and the finish were notable. Wine is still energetic, fresh, full/rich texture. Full body, long finish. Continued to evolve in the glass, decant is highly recommended
One can debate the veracity and durability the wine critic's scores, this one got 100 pts from Jeb Dunnuck/Wine Advocate. Either way, this was a spectacular showing on this evening - a reminder of why I love CdP, - especially in the Fall and through the Holidays. Should go for a while if wanting to cellar, but this may be in a perfect spot right now...:)

Pretty scarlet red with a rust rim. Pomegranate, red currant, blackberry, cassis, wood nuances, new saddle leather and lovely red fruits. Eucalyptus encompasses the senses at first in this lively wine followed by mountain laurels and some succulent plum flavors - the alcohol is still very present - we’d venture to say this wine still needs more time even after two decades, but damn we love CDP.
p.s. snake river NY strips with homemade farmers cheese pierogis pan fried with sweet onions and salad.

First one from my own stash - and it was worth the wait. The wood is now completely integrated - yet is stil very concentrated indeed with a core of kirsch, quite primary for it's age, although beginning to broad and showing more local. There is a real future here - certanly took it's sweet time coming around. #HSA

Musky, rust red color. Leather, pepper, spice, earth floor, crushed autumn leaves and sweet dark red fruits. Lovely integrated tannins and noticeably underlying old world flavors. Sweet cherry and cranberry flavors - the wine is very alive with a long, but not weighty finish. Could easily go another 5+ years but in a great place, and would drink incredible with thanksgiving dinner.
p.s. grilled cheese and tuna salad

The cork looked great. It was a little too tannic off the bat so decanted it for about an hour. Think that was a mistake. By the 2nd glass it lost most fruit and had barnyard that couldn’t shake. Really disappointed. Was looking forward to this one being great. Lesson learned on the decanting.

Massive wine. Red to dark red from edge to center. Rather primary regarding fruit notes. Integrated and round in the mouth with a long finish. Very much from its year. If you like younger wines then now is fine but I believe its sweet spot is still too come.

3rd of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, settling into early maturity and becoming more harmonious, lovely fresh crunchy, slightly peppery Grenache to the for, long, complex and wonderfully fragrant for CdP, long life predicted, scope for upgrade. VF (18.5).

This bottle seems to have just slipped past maturity. There is still a lot to like here, with its all its lush, ripe, sweet, juicy, peppery kirsch, black cherry, thyme and earthy notes. But it seems to lack the same level of intensity and power found in previous bottles from the same case. Note to self, try another bottle in the moderate future.

It has been a very long time, since I tasted this; still immensely concentrated, in the beginning not very typical of the appellation, but it gains local feel. Quite extracted and polished still. I found more typicity in the 2000, really - this is a monster. #Veddinge bakker

95 pts

Mind blowing; an unforgettable experience that illuminated possibilities and shattered categories. Enjoying an '05 Vieux Telegraph La Crau the day after only reminded me of what an entirely different scale this '01 Reine des Bois was on. An ephemeral concentration of so many notes that listing them would sell it short; all the same, just for a sense of it, there's plush, living, salt-and-rind-cured blackberries, smokey slate, and braised fig, licorice, and blueberries, all driven by the gentle, low rumbles of a powerful engine. A finish to die for. Drinking perfectly but no where near expiration -2025 easy.

Decanted, but this was pretty good once it had 20-30 minutes to get to room temperature. Dark fruits, plenty of funk and barnyard elements to it, this is a powerful wine that is fully mature and packing a lot of punch right now. A-/A

A Fine Set of Wines with Friends, Both Old and New (Los Olivos, CA): My second from a well-stored case, and a step up from the prior bottle, tasted just over a year ago, which bodes well for the rest. Expressive nose of unmistakably CdP notes: smoked meats, plum, spice and flower petals. More typicity on the palate, rich, yet balanced by a fine acidity. Black cherry and spice interplaying beautifully. Plenty of minerality too.

1st of 12, decanted 80 minutes, perfect cork and level - deep, dark youthful ruby, purple tinge on rim; cherry, plum, leather, hint of vanilla and other spice, acid lift; full, long, concentrated and very persistent, great energy to fruit, meaty, VA lift making it as yet edgy, not quite come together, needs a little more time. Should improve on current VF (18.5)....Beaucastel currently more harmonious!

Blind Tasting & Dinner: This needs time and a good decant. After a rather mixed experienced with the last bottle I opened this one the day before and decanted it for two hours. Came nicely together within these two hours. But was even better when we followed the wine on day two over seven hours. I advise to decant it for at least six hours.
On day one and at first on day two the meaty, almost beef jerky, earthy notes were quite dominant. On top, the high alcohol bothered me a bit (don’t drink this wine just one degree too warm). But after some time the wine showed its highly complex, very elegant and soft soul. Almost Burgundian. Medium body and high aroma intensity with red dried meat, very ripe red fruits (strawberries), hints of dark fruits and lots of herbs (rosemary and mint among others). Quite intense and a long finish.
The complexity and structure might deserve a higher rating but not my favorite aroma profile and a bit too high alcohol. 94 points.

Decanted 2h the night before, the second decanting before dinner. This is power! Long finish. Very earthy - some one said beef jerky (not me) - and full of tobacco, almost struggled to find the fruit. But some fresh strawberry shines through the dense forest. Floaral overlay, think violets. After 1h or so in the glass the earthyness pulls back and reveals more, fermented fruit. Reminds me of Port. Needs a lot of space.

Rich ruby color. Ripe nose of blackberry, black raspberry, violets/floral, baking spice, savory/meats. Big wine throughout, has nice sweetness through the mid palate. Nuanced and long finish.
This is a classic big style CdP, expressive and aromatic. It seems to be moving into a great spot right now, tannins resolved, ripe fruits, secondary notes. Should continue to drink well for a while - probably 10+ years left...Drank really well on this evening, candidate for WOTN from some of our group.

At 17, this is still going strong. The oak is completely integrated, the wine is richly concentrated, and you're left with more than enough, lushly textured, ripe, red fruits, pepper, earth, black cherry, jam and thyme to satisfy. Popped and poured, this is showing quite well today.

PnP. Never had a wine that smelled so meaty. Like dry beef jerky, gamey, slightly sweet. Mid palate and finish quite weak at the beginning but with time in the glass it became better and better. Classic CDP herbal component, rather dark fruits, nice velvety structure and the hyper interesting meat component (which became less stark and better integrated with time). But we also had a not overly well integrated acidity and a little bit of heat (both especially at the beginning). It changed quite significantly in the 1.5 hours in the glass but I guess this has to be decanted much longer (my advice: 4-6 hours) to show its true colors. Today, 95 for the complexity and potential and 90+ for the overall, slightly weird experience. Will definitely try another one soon to see if more air can lift it to much higher levels. Not sure if waiting 10 years will do the job as the fruit component might be vanished by then.

My first from an unopened case recently bought at auction, clearly beautifully stored. Nowhere near a perfect wine for me, but quite special and a real delight. Expressive nose: smoked meats, plum, spice and flower petals. Good typicity on the palate, rich, yet balanced by a fine acidity. Black cherry and tart red fruit notes along with more spice. I look forward to trying the rest.

Is it 100 points?..... no, but its damn good. Showing an incredible, layered nose, with savory charred meats, crushed flowers, violettes, brown spices, undergrowth, rich plum sauce, and crushed strawberry. On the palate, I found rich, yet angular textures with black berry, cherry, and sweet herbs and a zing of acidity. It finished long with a pulse of acidity mixed with zesty spices and tart wild berry.

An extraordinarily profound wine! Certainly not fully mature, but more evolved than several of its neighbors, it offers dark fruits, meaty notes, lavender, licorice, and a fat opulent structure. Dark purple color. Nose of plum, pepper, lavender, garrigue, tampenade. Layers of black plum, sweet blackberry, moca, black pepper, rocks, and gravel with immense concentration and surprising freshness drilling deep on the palate with cut and purity. Served double blind in a flight of the best 2001 wines from Chateauneuf, this came out first! With 2 hours of double decanting, the wine announced its presence with its dark, almost opaque color. On the palate, the wine was incredibly intense. It was rich, vibrant, erotic, fresh and opulent in character. Packed and stacked with layer after layer of ripe, sweet, pure, juicy fruits, the wine filled your mouth, coated your palate with flavor and lingered as you waited for another sip. The oak was completely integrated. This was the best showing for this wine I've yet tasted.

Still inky purple. Very ripe nose of red fruits and kirsch. After a decant, some mushroom and tar emerged. Monolithic, tannic and alcoholic on the palate. While I think this wine is young and the tannins may soften, I don't see anything resembling harmony in its future.

Only gave this about 30 minutes. Not perfect, but it is clear why this is consistently better than most great CDPs. Dark and powerful blue fruits, but this has wonderful balance for a big wine. Others from this vintage are showing a lot of tannin, but this one is much better balanced, with only a hint of drying tannin at the end. Really nice, and wish I would have been able to spend more time with it. A

Hey it's summer... What am I drinking CdP for? We grilled a flank steak and I grabbed this bottle from my cellar without knowledge of its quality. Decanted and poured, my wife and I were blown away. This wine perfectly balances dark, complex fruit with sufficient acidity and sweet tannins. Drinking beautifully now, but over the next few years sure to gain even more complexity and merit a higher score.

Lovely, lovely, lovely... This 2001 RdB is such an exquisite representative of the house style I am stunned. Despite its age there is a massive attack of deep profound fruit of blackberries and boysenberries. But also the classy kirsch and sweet licorice are speaking up with a loud voice. Then secondary tones of dried flowers, subtle barnyard, stony minerals and charcoal emerges. Yes, this effort is without doubt powerful, but the palate also tells a story of elegance and integration. The balance is profound and together with a lovely acidity and silky tannins, I indeed fall in love with this wine. I recommend decanting, with some air the wine gets "cleaner" and there is no sign of the barnyard. This wine exhibits the traditional Grenache driven fruit and complexity, but the "élévage" certainly adds that little extra more forward style. It is quite adorable. To conclude, this is a profound Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a very good example of the Mordorée house style. Bravo! (score is 97+)
(Tasted in a flight with 2003 Domaine de la Mordorée Cuvée de la Reine des Bois, 2003 Domaine du Pégaü Cuvée Réservée, 2004 Malleolus Valderamiro and 2007 Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin.)

Dec 28th 2013 Annual Holiday CDP Tasting at the Edina Country Club: Still a baby. Incredible stuffing. Closed down but with a powerhouse of flavor and a multi-minute finish. On the second pour, its a bit more open, with some nice bakers chocolate. Will be fantastic with a few more years of bottle age. My WOTN in tough company. Leads to an interesting debate about if a CDP could get 100 because it has to be as viscerally moving as any other wine in that category.

Annual Holiday CDP Tasting: Epic & Stunning Wines Featuring a trio of 2001's (Edina, MN): Very dark ruby-purple color. This had been slo-O'd for 5 hours and then splash decanted . Drank 2 glasses over 3 hours. This was another absolutely glorious wine. The nose starts out with cedar, dried leaves, black cherry, currants, garrigue, and earth. Much slower to reach its zenith, building very gradually. The palate is deep, very elegant, medium full body, darker fruits of black cherry, currants, and raspberry wrapped encompassed by a mineral laden, garrigue and spice infused blanket. The palate develops tremendous intensity, and there is a very long savory, meaty finish. Well integrated tannins, perfect balance and structure. I don't know if it gets any better than this. At close to 80% Grenache, the wine had bright red fruit notes with a gorgeous balance of earthiness from the 10% Mourvedre. The rest of the blend is Syrah, Cinsault, Counoise and Vaccarese. Decanted for about 30 minutes and while it still could have aged a bit longer it drank beautifully. Elegant, bold, and very harmonious.

A wine that should have gotten way more air beforehand, this Mordorée Reine des Bois didn’t quite impress me at first, but then, it went onto some magical, harmonious modern expressions of Chateauneuf du Pape. This is an excellent Chateauneuf, modern in style but with perfect balance. Lots of pleasure from this bottle, not sure it's worth the current asking price, though. But definitely a good surprise, it has not gone the same way as other 2001 CdPs that dried out and turned into cherry liquor.

Fruit has faded and VA (dirty socks) has taken over the bouquet of this wine. Make no doubt about it, this wine was made from excellent fruit. However, it was vinted on the "razor's edge" of winemaking, and at this point the fruit is losing out, and it is hard to foresee it retaking the reigns.
However, I could be wrong. VA haters, beware.

On opening this was closed, with oak barrel notes, olive tapenade, and meat juices. Opened up fairly quickly to show concentrated cassis and kirsch (without any overripeness) with notes of sous bois and garrigue. Continued to evolve over a few hours, with spicy notes coming through, and black pepper. Still quite young. A deftly balanced wine, with loads of concentration, tannin, alcohol, acid, but all in such a balance as to seem light in weight.

SQN vs Rhone Dinner (BLT Steak, DC): Velvety nose, with tons of fruits focusing through... nice. Red and black fruits dominate the palate, combining with coffee dust to give it a velvety feel too. It does come across as a tad hot, and with it seeming very young, I think this will be great for years!

Dark red. The nose has tons of dark fruit, meat, smoke, smoked meat and mineral. Great rich dark fruit and earth flavours and huge structure. A long dry intense finish. A great wine with a huge future.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape semi-blind tasting and dinner (Steven's House): Dark red colour. Jammy tones in the very rich and thick nose. Very concentrated and elegant on the palate. Powerhouse of spices and dark red fruits with prunes, berries and vanilla. Long lingering tannins. Very special wine but maybe not really what I look for in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Maybe needs (lot) more time to mature?

KYD #1.2: Very intense nose packed with dark scents like olive tapenade, earth, asphalt, coffee and blackberries. Concentrated blackberry fruit on the palate but even though it is dense the fruit still feels cool and refreshing. The style is very intense and there is a lot happening in the very long aftertaste with just tons of spices mixed with an impressive backbone of tannins and acidity. Impressive wine with plenty of years in it.

Cherries, blackberry, blueberry, cassis, black raspberry, spice, earth, jam and smoke filled aromatics make up the perfume. The fireworks continue as the wine fills your mouth with deep fresh flavors. This concentrated wine offers a lot of purity and freshness with ample length. At 10, this is drinking beautifully today. With another year or two, this might get even better!

Jay Miller saves the world and we celebrate with wines from all over. (Jay's): Showing much better than a bottle of the '98 I had earlier in the year. Ripe with sweet black fruit, cocoa and sweet baker's spices. It's bit monolithic and showing some wood. Despite that, it tastes good and I'm enjoying it, but it's spoofy and not really what I look for in CDP. A-.

Grenache Smackdown (Wally's, Arlington Heights): nose: nice and solid nose of roasted meats, black fruits, black licorice and black cherries. Good black fruited profile, but isn't giving up as much depth as other wines as it just comes across as more run of the mill in this group
taste: good tannins with a medium/full feel and very good tones of black licorice, dark red fruits, black cherries, and tones of black fruits. Not much layering on the palate and decent depth
overall: a real shocker when revealed. This came across as a fairly standard CdP as opposed to one that should really show off what CdP can be. Maybe this bottle was in a dumbphase as most of the group had it as a run of the mill grenache

Not sure how this wine merits 100 points. Ruby/garnet color with some cloudiness in the glass. Tannins still very firm. Decanted for 2 hours and drank over 7-8 hours. Very concentrated wine. Flavors of cherry cough drop, stewed plums, beef blood, garrigue, quartz, green pepper, menthol, petrol, licorice and gun metal. Medium to long finish with a medicinal and metallic after taste. Wine slightly out of balance with the alcohol, or perhaps it’s just the medicinal flavor profile that accentuates the alcohol rather than masking it. Disappointing bottle considering the triple digit score that the wine received. Probably could use at least 3 more years in the cellar. Who wants to buy my last bottle? I mean, wow! 100 pointer. Best wine ever……

WOW......this wine hasn't aged a bit.....dark, almost opaque, with a huge nose of kirsch, ripe plums, cherries, tar, and licorice......the palate is like a barrel sample, with earth, black plum, blackberry, licorice, black cherry, and a wall of tannin. Opened at 9:30am, and consumed at 9pm. If I had it to do again I would have decanted it for 24 hours.

95-96 pts

Decanted for about 6 hours before drinking with Osso Buco. This followed a 2000 Pegau Cuvee Reserve' that was fabulous. If not for that, I would likely be raving more about this one. This wine is inky dark, and just plain huge - but, it was nowhere near ready to give up all it surely promised. The promise is that this will one day be a 95-100 point wine, but I don't think that day is soon. Sorry I was impatient, excited that I still have more.

Dark purple/inky color. The nose is extremely pure and intense - reminds me of Greenock Creek or Harlan. Loads of blackcurrant licquer in combination with christmas spices, meat and blood. It's very intense, but still with loads of complexity. Parker likens it to a top-Bordeaux, but I think the modern style of this is more akin to a top-Napa Cab. 97+

Kick-ass wine. Deacanted for 2 hours before drinking. Initially, this baby gave nothing away - just a lot of strange, funky, disjointed smells. After it was poured into the glass, however, it really shined. Very structured wine, with layers of fruit, minerals, kirsch, spice, pepper, and velvety tannins. Finish was 1 minute +. I'd have given this a higher score but it was a little hot. It was tough to put this one down.

Dinner with the Cassettas (The Square, London): I was surprised how restrained this was, soft ripe fruit but with a solid tannic kick, high acid. Very long smooth wine, I hope with time the beautiful dark cherry and strawberry notes are balnced by savoury herbs that are currently in the background. 94-96 Points

Bob Muraro brought it to dinner at CIA, Hyde Park. We also drank a 97 Margaux. Deep, rich inky wine that needs to be sipped. Needs many more years. I preferred the Margaux, which was not a great Margaux. How RP gives this 100 points is beyond me?

Rich blackberry fruit, excellent acid balance and minerality. This needs at least 10 years to begin to unfold and show its stuff, but it is incredibly delicious now.

Drank on 4/8/06 at Veritas. Fantastic wine, although not nearly ready. I am not sure it is a 100 point wine, but definitely mid-90s (drink in 5 years to give it a fairer rating). Great backbone, earthy flavors, lots of fruit - which made it enjoyable now.

This is a deep, inky monster of a wine (interesting to note I used the same descriptor in my TN almost two years ago...). Though it needs a bit of coaxing at this stage, the nose is dense, with notes of tar and black fruit - black cherry, cassis and raspberry. It's showing more fruit than I recall from the bottle I opened on 4/04. In the mouth, we're talking serious concentration - indeed, the essence of Grenache explodes on the palate. Gorgeous, sappy, black fruit, spice, and, though plush, massive underlyting tannic structure. No obvious new oak aromas or flavors - if it saw any (which I'm sure it did), it has been fully absorbed by this massive, inky wine. This is more tannic than previous vintages of RdB. Judging by how youthful the '98 was last month (see TN), I'd say that this even more concentrated, structured effort will age at a similarly slow pace. Though I have no real way to tell what the '01 will become after, say, 15 years inthe cellar, I'm optimistic that it will evolve nicely into a beautiful and perhaps more "typical" Chateauneuf, as the fruit falls away over time and the inevitable secondary characteristics come into play. This is undeniably a WOW kind of wine.

Inky purple, almost black. Deep, remarkably complex nose of plum liqueur, licorice, violets, garrigue, vanilla, musk. In the mouth has a saturated, velvety feel, really coats the palate, wave after wave of sweet, ripe, plummy fruit. Already lovely but will probably not be at its best until 2009-2012, and I bet this will last a long time in the cellar. Fantastic stuff, but not at all typical for CDP -- to me, this is really in an Australian style and kind of a worrisome wine -- sure, I like it, but I wouldn't enjoy drinking wines in this style all that often, and the thick, sweet, mouth-coating aspect that seems so impressive now could get kind of cloying if everyone tried to do this.

Drank it together with Pegau da Capo 2000 - both 100 point wines. The Mordoree was my favourite but the other 5 felt the da Capo was more yummy. Mordoree is clean, fresh with focused fruit and quite tannic. It will get even better with age. Improved a lot in the decanter.

2001 Domaine de la Mordorée CdP Cuvée de la Reine de Bois, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhône, France Very dark red color. Scents of vitamin pills and cranberry juice cocktail. Strong and tannic in the mouth delivering a huge punch to the palate with a curious bitterness to the taste. This seemed to disappear after a little while and more fruit and sweetness appeared with delightful width and density. This is a wine that benefitted tremendously from a 30 minute breather. After the initial shock the wine was delicious. 93 points

A monster of a wine. Nearly black. Big alcohol - but not overly hot. Notes of coffee. New wood not obvious, though I'm sure it saw some. Just huge - yet balanced in a massively proportioned way. A classic. Less fruit driven and more tannic than both the excellent '98 and the softer '00 RdB. I suspect that this will be a very, very long-lived CNP.

Probably the most powerful wine of the night. Almost black in color, extremely thick in the mouth, with powerful but fine tannins combined with layer upon layer of ripe black fruit hitting the mid-palate. Showing high alcohol (or at least an impression of it), but with a very long finish. Another one I couldn't drag myself way from. I kept remembering this mid-palate experience for days afterwards. Perhaps in retrospect the best wine of the entire Bay Area Wine Project tasting.

On the palate rather polished. 14,5%, lots of Grenache sweetness, Cherry, garrigue, herbs. Very fine and firm tannin. If drunk at 14 degree, it is not hot and beautiful balanced.

Final night dinner/PNV week - our annual "mostly non Cab" rinse to the week's tastings... (Ad Hoc, Yountville CA): This one from my cellar, fun to drink next to the Marcoux. Havent had this vintage of Mordoree yet, good chance to see if it lives to the hype. This one had maybe 45 minutes of air before drinking.

Packed and stacked with layer after layer of ripe, sweet, pure, juicy fruits, the wine filled your mouth, coated your palate with flavor and lingered as you waited for another sip. The oak was completely integrated. This was the best showing for this wine I've yet tasted.

Exceptional bottle! I was concerned that the wine might still be too young, I was wrong. Drinking beautifully now but will hold for a long time I suspect. Wonderful mixture of light and dark berries aromas with a strong floral background.

Robert Parker 100-point dinner (Bellavino, Thousand Oaks, CA): Muted nose. Opened up a bit in the glass. Nice palate but bitterness in finish.

France Trip Part 1 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 6/16/2006-6/17/2006: Same bottle as Vinsanity. Wow, this was a huge treat. Awesome concentration and power, without any heaviness or heat. Rich blackberry fruit, excellent acid balance and minerality. This needs at least 10 years to begin to unfold and show its stuff, but it is incredibly delicious now.

Huge. Much more concentrated and structured than the 2000 RdB, tasted side by side. Dense, sappy, black fruit. Black cherry / black raspberry liquor. Great balance despite its huge size. Good underlying acid / tannic structure. Excellent.

Not a 100 point wine in my mind. Definitely very good. I would say low 90's at this point. I think Wine Spectator has it correct.

2001 Domaine de la Mordorée CdP Cuvée de la Reine de Bois, Chateauneuf du Pape, Rhône, France
Very dark red color.
