Superb wine, all you can expect from a beautiful bordeaux in a strong vintage.
The smoky flavors reminded me of a bottle from the 1955 vintage that I tasted a couple of years ago. This makes me think that this wine has plateaued but should stay there for some more years. Worth seeking out (paid around 115 CHF for a bottle in a retail shop a couple of years ago, which is below the current release prices for this château).

I was most impressed by this Haut-Bailly, with its textbook exuberant gravelly Graves attack with some menthol and licorice thrown in. On the palate this is a complete and perfectly resolved wine and had with a nice mouthfeel and long finish. The most impressive fully mature Haut-Bailly I can remember drinking.

Po's 1990 Bordeaux Dinner (La Trompette, Chiswick): Lightly smoky, minerally, spicy red fruit, a touch reserved on the nose. Medium bodied, red fruit, spice, touch of firm but fine tannin still, vibrant acidity, quite linear, decent length. Excellent, drinking well though absolutely no hurry

Po’s 1990 Bordeaux (La Trompette, London): Quite rich initially, a touch of spearmint. Classic Graves palate with some tobacco and gravel. Refreshing attack, some width but light and relatively short on the finish though there’s an underlying persistence that carries through. A lingering quality. ****

PNP, mature colour with amber rim. Nose of dark red fruits, hint of ‘animal’, cinnamon and maple syrup. Medium body on palate, good complexity that gets better with subsequent pours. Still good energy and nice balance, decent finish. Declined after an hour so i guess its time to drink up!

Bordeaux 1990 horizontal tasting (Fribourg): 1990 Bordeaux horizontal hosted by a private collector. 30 years down the road, the vintage comes across as bold and muscular, youthful and in general not yet open for business or at times closed. Highlights included Figeac, Haut-Brion, Mouton, Calon Ségur – and to my surprise – Marquis de Terme. See tasting story for more take-aways and the complete line-up.
Tasting note Tobacco, barnyard, scorched earth, dark fruit, dry leather. Fresh and fruit forward palate, tannin with grip and a long, juicy finish. This was the oldest Haut-Bailley I have tasted to date (others include 2009, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017) and I'm impressed by the constantly good to very good performance over the years.
New Years Eve (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 3 hours. This has a lot of cassis on the nose with charcoal, tobacco and scorched earth, damp earth and only the slightest hint of funk. The palate is also dense with full body, cassis and blakcberry, charcoal, tobacco, and earth. There's still a good bit of round tannin here that suggests this still has a lot left to go. 92 to 92+pts.

During a Pessac-Leognan themed dinner. This was the WOTN. Captivating nose with the aromatic kaleidoscope only aged Bordeaux can provide. Wet forest floor, spices, game some red, cranberry compote elements as well. Soft palate, nice fruit as expected from 1990. Fully mature. Enjoy and drink up if you have this in the cellar. The dinner confirmed the aromatic power of the Pessac Leognan appellation, lots of characterful wines here.

This bottle, my last of a dozen, was much better than the evolved and fading bottle of 2016 and well up to the standard of the 2012 bottle, albeit on a lower key, I think. Colour was deep with very little bricking, the nose was initially very subdued but opened out later to show a lovely complex blend of ripe red fruit and minerals. Like on the nose it took a little time to coax the aromas out of medium bodied, long and velvety textured palate, but towards the end it was discreetly but beautifully expressive and harmonious with enough acidity and grip revealing new facets to the last drop. Sorry that it was my last bottle, especially since it was so excellent.

I am still trying to work out what I think of this old vintage Pessac-Leognan. I have not had such an old vintage from this appellation, previously. First the color was light. The fruit was still robust and fresh, yet the tenor was light and fairly straightforward. This is partly due to low acidity on entry and very soft tannins on the finish. This wine was extremely easy to drink with the Irish lamb stew of the evening or by itself. I would have much enjoyed more of the same. And, yet, it did not provide a great deal to ponder or contemplate.

Purchased on release and it showed. All the classic Pessac charcoal, scorched earth, and black-fruit character, dense by the standards of Haut-Bailly (that's the vintage) but nice and supple when you toss it around in the mouth (that's Haut-Bailly)

2 bottles had been re-corked with corks og bad quality. Both corks broke when they were pulled. They were both destroyed by TCA The third bottle had the original cork. it was old and almost falling apart but pulled up in one piece. the wine was smooth, good clear dark red colour. Hints of pencil and dark red berries. In the mouth smooth, well balanced, soft integrated tannins. But I think there was a hint of TCA, After 2 hours the wine was dead. All fruit gone!

Beaucoup plus agréable que le 2007 bu il y a quelques mois. Le vin est en pente descendante à mon avis, mais il reste puissant et intéressant à déguster. I had a dozen of this wine and they took a long time to come round but the previous in 2012 was really excellent. However, this bottle was more evolved both in colour and aroma than I was expecting. There was a distinct brown tint during pour and the aromas had a metallic edge, particularly on the nose. The palate was medium plus bodied with attractive mature but fading fruit, lots of forest floor and other secondary aromas, 1990 generosity and graciousness and good length with resolved tannins. Are all bottles now heading downhill in this way or was it just this one (still good level but beginning to leak)? I have two left and won't hang around before opening another. Still classy and good, though.

Lovely wine at its peak of maturity. A bit of reduction at first (stables, wet grass and animals smells), but it opens up after a while. It is medium-bodied pretty elegant, well balanced, has smooth and round tanins and has a very decent finish (10/12 seconds). This wine is well made and is drinking perfectly now.

Vivid garnet. Aromatically not that intense, but well integrated and typical for its origin, with good depth and slight warmth. Only objection a slightly buttery note. On the palate mellow and rounded, with ripe tannins, fresh enough medium acids, and quite a lot of fruit left. Tasty stuff that perhaps passed its peak recently, yet should keep for another five to ten.

Truffle dinner, HK. Sharp precise dark cherry, berry and leather, opening up in a very consistent manner to reveal deep floral, toast, nectar notes with a hint of citrus. Fully mature and drinking well with a hint of fruit decline setting in, but that to me adds to the pleasure of a restrained Bordeaux. Medium to long finish. Garnet red.

Bordeaux 1982-1900-2000 tasting (The Traklin Wine-Bistro): ruby garnet aromas of rich, dark cherries, tobacco, earth, and a dense beam of graphite ( pencil lead ). densely packed on the palate, flavours of dark cherry, tobacco and earth long finish.

Quite a contrast to the Pape Clement - whereas that comes across incredibly concentrated, structured and powerful, this is leaner, less dense and very elegant. There's a great fragrance here that builds with air with cigar smoke, savoury earthiness, cedar and graphite coming together, and rich red and dark fruits on the palate augmented by maturing flavours and conveyed with wonderful finesse. Outstanding wine.

As recently as some 3 years ago, I continued to be a little disappointed by this wine, finding it correct but lacking in expressiveness and charm. I am glad to say that it at last unbending. Colour was of medium depth ruby/garnet with distinct bricking at the rim just as 3 years ago. However the nose was much more open showing nice claret fruit, touches of forest floor and minerals with some generous roundness and the typically left bank fresh (almost green) edge. The palate was well shaped with a crescendo towards the firmly structured finish and good length, medium bodied with good depth, good fruit giving off aromas similar to those on the nose and 1990 generosity. The wine was always elegant but the severity has moderated, greater complexity had developed and a classy charm has emerged; so digestible and moreish that I was tempted to open another bottle; 17/20++.

Ian S's Haut Bailly Offline (The Ledbury, London): Quite mellow, classic dry claret initially. A touch liquorish/dry on the finish. Not sure this is as good as the first impression suggested. So very different from a bottle drunk one year ago that was soft and ready to go...The color was ruby garnet to the rim and when I decanted the wine there was only a bit of earth and tobacco on the nose. It opened very slowly, needing 1 1/4 hours in glasses and decanter to really start to show well. From then it unwound and improved until all was gone about 2 1/2 hours after opening. This note is 1 3/4 hours along the way: Focused aromas of rich, dark cherries, tobacco, earth, and a dense beam of graphite ( pencil lead ). Sleek, yet densely packed on the palate with the same rich, dark cherry flavor from the start to the long finish. Tobacco and earth are major players in the flavor, but I have never tasted a wine that so well defined the flavor often called graphite or pencil lead in Bordeaux descriptors. It is this that lingers and lingers and lingers in the mouth after the cherries have left. A lithe, elegant wine, but elegant like a well muscled ballet dancer, not the elegance of ,say, a fine Burgundy.

Opened 4 hours before serving, but did not decant. This had a nice nose of smoke and dark fruits. Palate was more dark fruit (blackberry, black currant), along with notes of smoke and tar. Medium bodied, with well integrated tannins followed by a medium-length, slightly spicy finish. Went well with grilled marinated flank steak.

Haut-Bailly & Pape Clément (Compass): A stikingly powerful wine, it seems to have more of everything. A deep, dark nose with notes of graphite, ash and roasted herbs. A full mouthfeel that showed impressive depth and breadth. Perfect balance between the ripe, ripe fruit and underlying acidity. It is a great example of the richness of the vintage that I so much enjoy. Perhaps it will have a lower apogee than the '89, but I thought it was the better wine for today.

Bordeaux Left Bank (semi blind) (Amsterdam Wijn Antiquariaat): Attractive wine, luscious, nice balance with good acidity and good length. Pessac dust and tobacco and cedar in the nose. Better than expected based on the general reviews.

Garnet red.

Drying out? Decent though. ***1/2. A second glass from same bottle passed round blind later in evening was unrecognisably better- rounder, sweeter fruit and no dryness on finish. ****1/2

This note is 1 3/4 hours along the way:
Focused aromas of rich, dark cherries, tobacco, earth, and a dense beam of graphite ( pencil lead ).

Ruby with bricking. in color, this truffle, tobacco, coffee, smoky, cassis and earthy scented wine, is fully mature. With soft textures showing the patina of age the wine ends in an elegant dark, cherry finish.

I was afraid that this wine would have been past its peak, but hell no! This bottle does not need to be decanted, but can use 1/2 hour of fresh air. Is at its peak rigt now, and needs to be drunk within max 2 years. Enjoy..
