Dark ruby, clear. Nose clean and rich fruited. Some wood notes and a hot road aroma. What is that? It’s nice. Mouth leads with fruit, dark dark but fresh. Some bitterness to go with the acidic spine. Some camphor or medicine chest, a meaty hum. This is balanced between fruit and savoury. I’m sure many would say still too young but I’m not one for dessicated clarets and this is right in the slot for me. Drink while it makes you happy.

Had at Sanders and whilst this must have been my 6th or 7th bottle of this now, this was unusually very different from the others. You would never have picked it as being 15 years old. Deep colour, very fruit driven, almost a touch modern (compared to the traditional style it normally presents). Enjoyed this but surprised at how different it was.

NOSE: impulsive aroma of black cherry, boysenberry, chocolate, and pencil shavings mark it true to origin and age. It equilibrates in due haste, leaving a grounded face of salt, roots, porcini, and frosty dried herbs. MOUTH: evenly textured; weighted grip exemplifies dry comfort. This checks boxes: bouquet, substance, development; square, classic pleasure. TIME: it gets a lot more interesting as the hours tick by—stiffly contained, earthy, libidinal obsession aimed at captive destructions of berry bushels, black tea, and pipe tobacco. Finishes cool and sure (stone, mint.)

Well softened and drinking well. Still has some density. A bit of tannin and nice acidity with graphite and chocolate notes. Straightforward with a lot of Bordeaux character without being amazing. Just a very good dinner wine.

Good. Had it with rib roast and it blended right into the meal. Solid backbone of tanning and acid, but mellowed out with age. Restrained fruit, leaning dark and dried - cassis and plum leather. Notes of leather and cacao, some herbs. Tasty and easy going, with enough power to stand up to fatty beef. Not especially complex, and lacking a little depth in terms of tertiary flavors. Could have used a little more vivacity as well. But, ready to drink now and a nice straight-ahead Bordeaux. From a value perspective, this is outstanding stuff.

Still a fantastic nose - but think this one is slowly past its peak as fruit is fading and the balance of primary vs tertiary fruit is leaning towards the latter

Been holding onto this one for years, waiting for a special occasion, and it has arrived at last. Just wonderful for such a low price. Great complexity with cassis, dried fruit leather, herbs, and chocolate. This could have been twice the price - at $35 it's a masterpiece.

With the tailwind of a wonderful 2009 vintage there was not much risk to open this bottle. And rightly so: well advanced and perfectly drinkable this silky and charming bottle rings all the right bells, from sweet mature cassis and black berries, tobacco, leather to sweet spices and chocolate. Spot on for consumption now and over the coming 3-5 years. Do yourself a favour and get hold of bottles overlooked by investors and other folks in a good year, wait for 15 years and then collect a stellar "return on investment" on your palate (rather than in your wallet). I trust that at some point people will realize that the marginal incremental pleasure of a first growth is minimal compared to the extravagant premium you hand out for the futile prestige of opening a posh bottle. Think about it!

PNP this time and this opened up immediately. Still quite thick and dense, licorice and blackcurrants dominate. Chewy and tannic, this is full bodied and classic in style. Day 2 and whilst this has softened and mellowed somewhat, I preferred the chunkiness and bite that was more prominent on day 1. Very enjoyable and plenty of life left ahead of it.

Beautiful bouquet with dark berries and sweet spices, licorice and some leather. On the palate dark berries, licorice, fresh acidity and round tannin. The tannin still has a pleasant and soft bite and the wine can last for another 3+ years, but is in a lovely drinking stage now.

Bought from auction so not sure of provenance, but this was quite a different beast to my previous bottles. Elected to decant for 2+ hours and this was full bodied, dense, chunky and tannic. Somewhat vegetal and in need of a knife and fork. Day 2 and it had softened up quite a bit and settled down, but still a big, earthy, tannic wine. Best on day 2.

Upon opening, very big, curranty fruits. Almost a fruity lavender nose/taste, which I’m not sure I like. Decanted thru Rabbit - let’s see how things go over the next few hours, but I wonder if this will be better in a few years time? More anon….
The harshness has eased after a couple of hours decant. Perfectly enjoyable but this still needs some time. Try again in 2024.
Night 2: having been cling filmed in a decanter! Still plenty of guts, obv that much softer. That “lavender” has returned. Verdict remains come back in 2024.

Splash decanted and samples over 4 hours. Dark, dark blue and black fruit in color and on the still primary nose. Concentrated blue fruit that shows its quality but still very young. Better with an hour of air, this can be enjoyed now for its concentrated fruit, but should be better with a few more years of development. A-

I love this wine. Keeps on giving. Intense nose of dark fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant) coupled with vanilla, cedar notes and emerging tertiary notes of leather, tobacco.

This is in its prime and drinking splendidly. Dark berries, cherries, cocoa, and tobacco bouquet. Mid-to-full bodied, elegantly structured, with plummy notes of leather and sweet spices. Shows a beautiful sense of place, gaining volume, complexity, and nuance the longer it sits. A hint sappy on the beautiful, earth-driven finish.

Indian Takeaway Dinner (Auriol): Noticibly cabernet in contrast to the Rothschild Pauillac 2016. Lovely blackcurrant nose, mid-weight. Probably would have benefited from a short decant.

First bottle of the lot. Already well developed and a good representative of an excellent Bdx vintage. Smooth leather, cedar, tobacco, with liquorice and menthol notes. Medium bodied, this bottle delivers much drinking pleasure and can be drunk now and over a decade.

This is really showing all of its, soft, supple-textured, sweet plums and cherries, with their flowers and cocoa accents. Medium/full-bodied, with some richness and refined tannins, and a cool note of dark tobacco leaf, if you have been sitting on any, now is a good time to start popping a cork. No need to decant, just pop, pour and enjoy, Drink from 2022-2035.

Notes largely the same as previously. A little monolithic and underwhelming. Is there life to come (there often is with Bordeaux that cubes across this way). It didn't help that this was opened a few days after a Ducru Beaucaillou tasting.

Académie des Cinquante Claret Tasting (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): One of the stars of the show today. Everything in place, ‘rien ne dépasse’, marvellous Cabernet fruit, bright and crunchy and ripe, elegant and perfectly balanced palate, tannins enveloped in firm flesh, excellent resonance and length. Even better than when last tasted four years ago.

90 pts

Not much to add to the others' notes, such as Pavel P, which strikes a chord with me. This is an enjoyable, classic Bordeaux to drink with food, well-evolved now, quite earthy but lacking a bit of excitement and dimension.

Deep garnet with a bouquet of cedar, spice, tobacco, dried leaves and undergrowth with some secondary notes of 85% dark chocolate, mocha and coffee grinds. Medium to full-bodied, the wine is soft with a dried cherry and tar entry that almost feels Barolo-like! A savoury, restrained feel, the wine has plenty of fresh tobacco, chocolate nuances and sweet spices, alongwith a grippy, chewy texture that pulls at the gums. The mid-palate widens to show more chocolate mocha, almost feeling sweet like Xmas spices of nutmeg and cinnamon. The frame is built with a firm, lively acidity and fairly extracted but fine-grained tannins that work nicely. Good length, with the heat on the back-palate well integrated. I liked the baked elements to it, giving the feeling of a warm hot cross bun, although some felt it lacked freshness and the tannins did build.

A lovely crowd pleaser. Great nose and with higher than normal residue sugar. Certainly a solar year wine. Bordeaux meets Barossa. The wine was decanted 1 hour ahead of dinner, and was starting to fade at the 3 hour mark. So PnP should have been a better option. Drink.

PNP with a beautiful nose, intense blackcurrants and a hint of leather. Full bodied+, earthy, tannic and initially quite brawny and meaty. At 14% alcohol I thought I could detect a bit of heat (not sure)? Elected to decant the rest and this helped soften it up. Liquorice became more prominent whilst still retaining its muscular, traditional profile. Really enjoyed this but it still has a long life ahead. Will hold my remaining 2 bottles.

8 years since my last bottle from a case bought en primeur. Pnp. Followed a 09 Latour Martillac and in my eyes clearly one or rather two steps below in quality. Medium bodied wine that lacks the aromatic concentration of the Latour Martillac. Nevertheless solid and well balanced but without any excitement. Another 09 that makes you wonder whether 09 is really the "vintage of a lifetime" as Parker saw it, or merely an excellent Bdx vintage inline with left bank vintages such as 2005/2000/1995/1990/1989 and many others.

PNP for dinner. Powerful aroma when the cork was pulled. Did not need decanting or airing. Delicious dark fruit, some spiciness, low tannins, medium bodied. This was a delicious bottle for dinner and sipping into the evening. Just as delicious on the second night. Purchased in 2010 as a future and cellared at 57 degrees F.

Not as impressive as my May 2021 report, perhaps because served after a stellar Chateau Palmer that didnt provide a chance to shine. But overall, decent Bordeaux yet a little thin on the complexity and gravitating towards past prime. Drink yesterday if you can. Cheers.

I last tasted this about 8 years ago; the additional aging treated this wine well. It developed more body, a smoother finish, and the tannins settled down. This is a bargain when purchased in the $30 range. It should be able to go another 7 years.

From magnum and really this needs a bit more time in bottle to evolve as it seems ( especially vs the 2010 which is fresher) here the ripeness and juicenes outpower the wine and rob it if a charming side. For sure will get better with time and we would suggest 3-5 years more before attempting it unless one loves juicy ripe fruit side of young claret. Solid 90 for now

on the pour, it's dark, opaque, viscous. what a nose! ...currant, blueberry, woody, spicy. with three hours of air, this is silky, concentrated, full and round. lovely balance. some juicy acidity pops on the entry and mid palate and there's nice tannin that holds through the finish. this is excellent now but will do just fine in the cellar for a revisit in a few years. enjoyed this!

Very smooth on the palate. None of the grippy tannins that were displayed with the Uproar. The wine was drinking great and had settled down. All the flavors were well integrated with people finding different things on the palate and nose. Some of the comments were: plums, blueberries, maybe cooked mushrooms, cigar box, and maybe flower petals.

Decanter for 2 hours prior to consumption. Dense colour. The nose and palate initially are all blackcurrant and cedar. Balance is good, texture is good, and is promising for the future, but right now it is lacking expression. Day 2 sees a bit more life, with a more interesting chalky minerality showing on the medium finish.

Inky, deep ruby with a garnet ring in color. Earth and plum on the nose. Dark plum and cassis on the palate, very rich and smooth. Dark cherry on the finish. "Still a baby." We decanted this wine and it got super good after 2 hours.

This keeps getting better. Tonight, we matched against a 2005 Sena, for which I have a soft spot. But the Poujeaux was more complex, more savory, more...er, Bordeaux than the Sena in every respect, at half the (original) price.

Mid+ garnet Heady yet refined bouquet of cigar box, cedarwood, sauteed herbs and black fruits. Ripe notes from a warmer Bordeaux vintage draw you in. As wine opens there is dried autumn leaves, cinnamon and black raspberry. The entry has a distinct sweetness of glycerol, medium to full-bodied with a sleek, glossy texture balanced by a lively integrated acidity. Lots of intrigue, the spicy oak lingers on the mid-palate but never overruns; the fruit oscillates between red and black whilst being complexed with coffee, chocolate and a twist of liquorice. The wine feels very knit; there is a sweetness to the core; the length is long with cocoa powder tannins. Not the concentration of a better growth, this a sumptuous wine that is very much to ready to enjoy now.

I love Poujeaux in a big, ripe year. Very fresh — youthful wine. Complex nose that doesn’t rely on toasted oak or over-ripe fruit. Black cherry licqour, currant bush, licorice, some cinnamon. Tannins are starting to resolve. It’s a mouth coating wine with a moderate finish — all you might expect and more, price considered. Good value play in Bordeaux.

I must have been feeling flush to throw down $30 eight years ago but, as my note then indicated, it did seem to represent a decent buy relative to the average going rate. I further note that the price hasn't moved very much and more recent vintages are actually cheaper. Further fun fact: I saw this wine mentioned by Eric Asimov as a decent value Bordeaux in an article where he was commiserating with someone who had lost his sense of smell due to COVID and could no longer enjoy his Romanee-Conti. First World problems.
So after that preamble what about the wine? Prototypical Bordeaux aroma with that nice balance of wood, floral scents and fruit; deep garnet, medium body, mild tannins, moderate acidity, decent length. I am thinking it is as good now as it will likely be.

This is holding it all back. Quite hot on the nose with ripe fruits - cassis and jammy plums. Cedar and mint also. Still fairly high acidity, but the tannins are actually in check. It’s a balanced wine that just needs time. I’d say hold for 3-4 years.

Lovely wine. Popped and poured and drank over 3 hours. Opened up with time but it wasn't that closed to begin with. Short decant. Dark purple color. In the nose cassis, dark berries, liquorice and some spices. Very lovely, the nose is a bit restrained but better and more open on the second day. However, the palate then is outstanding: Medium bodied and very elegant with mushrooms, chocolate and a little vanilla. Great finish also, which goes on for quite a while. Then the wine comes again. Tannins fully integrated. Great wine which should be enjoyed right now and within the next 5 years I would say.

Very rich for a Poujeaux, and very expressive of the 2009 tilt towards ripe, long hanging fruit. Great balance and mid level oomph rich in earth and coffee notes, with a long and dry lively exit that is quite long for the pedigree. All in all, a bold Poujeax at the beginning of at least a 10 year drinking window with lots of room for improvement towards earthy secondaries in exchange for loss of fruit. Drink or Hold

Popped and poured. My wife liked this a lot more than I did (her rating 94.5). To me, this is a fine quaff, but it lacks the complexity for a higher rating. That said, my wife has a better palate than I do, so she is probably right, as usual.

Much more approachable than my last bottle 6 years ago, though this still (as expected) has a lot of structure. Tongue-staining, opaque purple, cassis and plum on the nose, with some notes of tobacco and bay leaf. Firm earthy tannic finish, lingering on the tongue like black tea. Getrunken im Vergleich zum 1999er. Hätte sie altersmäßig näher beieinander geschätzt. Der 2009er ist deutlich weicher, gefälligere Säure, runder wirkende Frucht, seidiger. Compared to the 1999 vintage I thought the difference between these two would be less than 10 years. The 2009 is more silky, easier to drink, finer acidity, well-balanced fruit.

PnP at a restaurant and was ready to go immediately, and had an open, lush style. Higher acidity than most vintages, with the tannins still showing a little firmness. The fruit had a dark red profile with good balance. Drinking very well now and will for several more years out. Quite enjoyable.

Not the best showing, a bit tart blackberries and casis, lacking a touch of acid on this bottle and for a 2009 not as opulent as many other wines. Perhaps bottle variation?

Rich flavours of cassis, cedar, dark fruits, earthiness, game when PnP. These flavours only last for 15-30 minutes. Flavour profile is quite secondary, suggesting the wine won't last for long. Appallingly low level of acidity, complete lack of backbone/structure. Flavours are not simple, but not exactly complex. Drink up now.
Tasted along other value 2009 bordeaux. Favourite of the night for all. While wine taste fine after in decanter for an hour, wine tasted best in hour 3-4. I would imagine another 5-7 years life easily
Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Dark red to rim. Dark fruits, fresh earth on the nose. Medium-full bodied, soft lush palate feel with ripe fruit, a little soft but well-balanced, medium finish. Drinking well though no complexity yet, should drink well for many years. Great QPR. Excellent.

We did a wine night with a group of friends. We went with three waves.
First Wave: White as people arrived in the afternoon while it was still hot out. 2017 Christian Salmon Sancerre Cuvee Vieilles Vignes. Served very cold; chilled in bucket of ice and water. Excellent nose with citrus and honeysuckle. Crisp drinker. More citrus and honey on palate. Everyone enjoyed it cold. Call it a 92-93. 2015 Ramey Chardonnay Russian River Valley. I might have had it a bit cold. I was shooting for 45-50F but I think is was closer to 40F. Not a ton of stone fruit on the nose or palate; was looking for peach or honey or wet stone. Main flavor that I detected was oak. Not buttery like some California Chardonnays but did not get the wet granite that some French Burgundys have either. Call it an 89. Clear favorite in the first wave was the Sancerre.
Second Wave: 2012 Denner Horizontal Tasting. Opened up the bottles 5 hours before tasting. Poured wine into glasses an hour before tasting and covered with an index card. 2012 Denner Syrah. Excellent nose. Hints of sandalwood and plums on the nose. Smooth texture with a long finish. A couple of people mentioned that they detected a slight “wet dirt in a barn” smell and taste but in a good way. Tasting notes mentioned sweet tobacco – maybe this was what we were detecting and describing. Excellent wine; call it a 93. 2012 Denner The Dirt Worshipper. Strong white pepper as soon as you removed the index card. One person said wet coals but we think they were influenced by the tasting notes. What does wet coals smell like? A couple of us thought we might have had kalamata olive on the palate but it could have been that we had eaten a couple of the olives. Hints of blackberry were the most prevalent. Also really good; call it a 93 or 94. 2012 Denner Mother of Exiles. Darker color than the previous two. Black current and pencil lead on the nose. Hints of plum and chocolate on the palate. Very smooth with a long finish. Not the strong grippy tannins that some of the Napa / Sonoma Cabs can have. This was smooth from start to finish. Call it a 93 or 94.
Third Wave. Finish up with a couple of reds to keep the night going. 2014 Chateau Tournefeuille La Terrasse. Opened it 5 hours before drinking. Bright red fruit. Juicy. Certainly did not go with the Denners. Probably a mistake on my part adding this as one of the ones towards the end of the night. No one thought much of it. Call it an 88 or 89. 2009 Chateau Poujeaux. Opened it 5 hours before drinking. Darker in color and much better than the Tournefeuille. Smooth but not as smooth or complex as the Denners. Call it a 90. We ran out so I opened up a 2012 Stonestreet Cabernet Sauvignon Cougar Ridge. I poured it through a venturi into a decanter. Dark inky color. Most prominent feature was the strong grippy tannins. It served as an excellent example of what the Denners did NOT have. It was not as smooth. But, in fairness, it was the end of the night and did not have nearly the amount of time as the other wines.
The favorite wines of the night were the Denner Dirt Worshipper and Denner Mother of Exiles; they tied for most votes. The Salmon Sancerre was also a favorite and had the best QPR of the night.

Consistent with previous notes a few years ago, only much more accessible and revealing on the palate. Nose is muted but the medium-full palate brings a good round core of dark and red fruit with chocolate, tobacco, leather, and coffee. Silky and textured, this should develop nicely over the next decade. Drink 2020-2030. Technical score: 93. Enjoyment score: 93

Dark purple with reddish rim. Core of dark fruits, blackberry, black cherry, dark chocolate. Tannins are fine, with some structure remaining on the finish. This has just tons of delicious fruit and was such a nice surprise for this price.

Really liked this one, great value for the money it cost back then. Very closed upon opening but then it opened up beautifully over the evening. Super dark aromas, all black fruit. Also nice toasty aromas, a bit of tobacco and dark chocolate. On the palate at first super smooth, you almost wonder where the tannins are. But they are indeed there, very soft and round. An excellent Poujeaux which is not near its end.

Very dark ruby purple. Muted nose, but plum and cassis, along with graphite on the savory palate. Mouth-coating feel, and tannins in retreat. Good pairing with lamb stew, and on its own after dinner. Liked it better than earlier note, two years ago.

Quite open after letting it breathe for 3 hours, medium bodied, just about ready, as usual everything in balance & structured, a great poujeaux, one of the best from this estate

Mature but lively appearance; classic Moulis nose, earth and a bit of gravel, oak spice, ripe but fresh black fruit, good depth; the medium-bodied (13.5% ABV) palate displays a creamy texture and good flavour intensity, there is lovely freshness and balance, a savoury aspect, and a healthy dose of finely grained tannins; good resonance and length. A lovely Poujeaux with everything in the right place, early maturity now and another decade in it at least.

Pleasant nose of blackcurrants and graphite. Smooth and mouthfilling, with a medium-length, slightly grippy finish. Decent concentration. Plenty of sweet fruit. Just hitting its stride I reckon, with a long life ahead. Very good for the price.

Revised my note...see below Hmm, I usually appreciate good Bordeaux and was looking forward to this wine but it just wasn't cutting it tonight. Drying tannins and no discernible fruit with a modest nose. This was after being open for an hour, then splash decanted. Nothing seemed to awaken this wine. I only had 6-7 ounces and vacu-vin'd the rest, very unusual for me on a Friday night when I'm good for 1/2 bottle or more. Next evening: Wow what a difference 24 hours make. I attribute it to a) I was in a funk last evening not feeling right and b) the wine got a chance to air out and it transformed it to a beauty. Gone were the harsh tannins, replaced by creamy, vanilla notes. The nose also blossomed and was giving off cedar, spices and dried fruit inches from the rim of the glass. Nice medium length finish. If I had more I would hold for 5 years.

Good value. Still quite firm tannins. Nose full of charcoal, coffee, clove, a little anise. Some light florals. Palate dominated by blackberry and cinnamon. This made me think of the 1990 edition, with its exaggerated surmaturite that was all the rage back then. This doesn’t have that ripeness - in fact it’s not dominated by fruit flavors at all - but it does have that sort of in your face style. While it isn’t the most elegant style, it is energetic, balanced, and very good value. It will last a while but I don’t think it’s going to really get better. So call it entering maturity window. Score: 90. Relative to expectations: 0

From a half bottle. Half-hour breathing time. A slightly reticent nose of sweet blackberry, black oak, coffee and tobacco. The palate is where this wine really shines - while only slightly above medium weight, the red and black fruits are strong and the tannins fully integrated. Perfectly balanced through a pleasing, masculine, black peppery finish. A wine definitely hitting its prime.
A most excellent QPR - the best $9.99 I might have ever spent...

From Mag, modern bordeaux style from a good & warm vintage, no need to decant in my opinion, easy and very enjoyable to drink but not a lot of character.

This wine is most certainly improving with age and is showing very nicely at the moment. Drank over two days and though a bit reduced at first, its overall character remained consistent the whole time. What strikes me as significant - since the last time I tasted this wine was in 2014 - is how much more complex and integrated it is. Tannins have melted and just give the right amount of grip. The nose is reserved but offers notable plum and marine along with mushroom and other mature aromas. The lengthy palate peaks with kirsch and dark chocolate and seems to get fresher as it remains open with more fruit and less earth and meat. I would say this still has many more great years ahead.

Clean and floral nose, wide open and very nice. Chalky tannins, still fair bit yet to be resolved but approachable now. Fresh acidity. Ripe fruits and oaks with heat at finish reflecting the vintage and ABV level at 14% (likely higher). Oaks still fairly dominant, need further integration. Drinkable.

Liked the last one enough that I couldn’t wait. Identical. Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour. Dark red to rim. Dark fruits, some earthiness on the nose, medium-full bodied, soft lush palate feel with ripe fruit, balanced on the tannins, medium finish right from the get-go. Drinking well now and should last another decade. Excellent.

no sign of maturity yet. an enjoyable stabilising acidity, delicious fruit both in nose and mouth. no hurry of course, but a joy to drink now. had it in parallel with GPL 96 (very very good!) and Poujeaux did not fall behind. okay, less complex than GPL.

Weekly tasting group RWP #286: Six pairs fully blind for my guests (@ My place): Beautiful dark berries, tar, leather, oak and herbs in the bouquet. On the palate dark berries, sweet spices, chocolate and beautiful acidity and tannin. A really delicious wine already and certainly a future of another 7+ years; so until 2025.

Nice rich dark nose of pencil led, menthol, dark fruits. Similar blue black fruit on medium plus pallet, some black licorice, brooding dusty tannins are still very present on the finish. This should continue to develop over the next 5-10 years.

Drank two magnum size Poujeaux tonight. Very ripe black fruits, with solid tannin and texture. Round and smooth. Good aftertaste with a hint of vanilla flavor. Comparable to Chateau Talbot 2009 750ml tonight! A very good Bordeaux with fair price!

Second Sunday Group: 2015 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Barb's): Popped and poured with dinner though I grabbed just a quick taste as we were getting ready to head out. Dark berry fruit dominates the bouquet and palate. Tannins are noticeable, but fine and not obtrusive. Hints of graphite and earth. Youthful; give this a few years yet.

Deep ruby with a fractionally garnet rim. Earth, forest floor, humus, stewed damson, stewed black plums, cedar, cigar box and pencil shavings on the nose. Explosion in the mouth with high acidity and still taught tannins with stewed damsons, black plums, black currant, cassis and black cherries, cinnamon, cedar & toast. Full mouthfeel with a long lingering finish. Damn good for the money!

No notes, but a very good bordeaux. On the nose there were notes of dark fruit (plums, black currant), oak, pencil and a somewhat sweet scent that made me think of marzipan or glue. Mediumbodied, balanced, smooth with round tannins and good length the wine displayed both fruit and effortless elegance. This bottle was just as good on day two although the fruit was less prominent.

Somewhat muted, both on the nose and the palate. Either it was subtly flawed or it had just aged somewhat ungracefully. A shame since I am a great fan of this wine generally speaking.

needs 1-2h decant and opens up nicely. secondary flavours nicely integrated with plenty of dark fruit. tannins have melted quite some bit, but are still present and are helped by food. to my taste the alcohol was a bit too promininent on both nose and palate.

Good, solid Bordo. Tannins are in balance, and it has an austere, lean ripeness that is quite attractive. Cedar, plum, no overly complex aromatics, but quality and balance are there.

Although always good value, I've sometimes found this wine rather chunky and 'rustic'. Not so the 2009 - it's a beautifully made wine still only at the start of its drinking window. Minerals and flowers (never thought I'd say that about a Poujeaux) and blueberries at the moment, sweet fruit, decent finish, tannins lurking but not protruding. Best vintage of Poujeaux I've ever tasted. Highly recommended.
Tannins are smoothed out very well and while this bottle is not very aromatic i feel that the vintage is coming into it's prime drinking window. Palate is rather non-descript without any complexity to speak of. I hope & pray, to any God, that these modern Bordeaux vintages don't age in this manner.
Keep thinking I'll like this better than I end up concluding. Ripe plum is the main feature of both nose and palate, with fine tannins lingering on medium long finish. Good with beef stew and NCAA basketball, but that wasn't the aim....At least it was good value.

Wow, I thought this was corked upon opening as it was undrinkable. Put aside for an hour and then what a nice surprise. The nose is full of plums, chocolate, and iodine. The mouthfeel is full and lush with a medium long finish that is mouthwatering and just slightly tannic. This is a big wine for sure. Drink now or wait.

despite CT notes suggesting decant this was just PnP Despite that I enjoyed it, color was deep and nose note too expedsife but the palate had the rich plumminess with chocolate of a merlot in heat (ie hot summer). Finish is decent and with dusty but fine tannins. I saw this for about $45 at Specs and gave it a try and was pretty satisfied would buy again

I get an interesting mix of aromas: barnyard funk mixed with toasty oak followed by plummy fruit and mint. On the palate there are gobs of ripe fruit mixed with toasty, splintery char and toasted barley. I'm disliking this wine on two levels. Firstly, a lot of Cabernet based wines at this age taste disjointed to me. After about fifteen years they seem more harmonious, especially as the oak starts to integrate. Secondly, outside of ripe fruit and oak I find nothing there. With this flavor profile this wine could be from anywhere. Once the wine gets properly aged I'm sure I'll like it more, but I doubt that it will get really interesting. I sure hope the 2010s have little to them than the 2009s.

Color: Very deep almost dark. Nose: Dark fruits like blackberry and blueberry. A hint of spices. Mouth: There is also a slight coffee aroma. After a while of breathing I can taste rosmary. The aromas have considerably melted together since my last tasting note. Quite expressive fruit and noticeable but very soft tannins. It has a smooth mouthfeel. Almost no bitterness in the finish. Full bodied wine. The alcohol is not noticeable. Full bodied wine that is almost chewable. Good to be drunk now but there is no need to hurry.

From a half bottle, tasted over two days. Plum, cassis, and coffee on the nose; tending towards blackberry and plum on the full bodied, concentrated palate. The generosity of the 2009 fruit is highly evident on the nose and palate, but there is no increase in complexity over time. Soft tannins and balanced acidity leading to a fruity, long finish. Nice effort!

2009 Bordeaux tasting (at my home): uncorked 9 hours prior to tasting dark opaque red-purple-black intense merlot-chocolate nose of dark fruits with earthy notes full bodied, firm tannins, well balanced and harmonised, powerful, rich, lot of chocolate flavours with dark fruits, structured, complexed, long rustic aftertaste, tannic finish. already enjoyable though still very young and can further age many years.
after 36 hours: excellent!
after 48 hours: the wine became partially oxidised; still drinkable in a way

Decanted for 4 hours, which was essential. Modern nose of red fruits and oak. Fine acidity and round tannins. On the palate silky with a creamy, round texture. Probably more California than Bordeaux at this early stage but very well-balanced, polished and stylish. Drinking well now with a proper decant but has the stuffing and structure to age well also.

Weekly tasting group #200; Merlot dominated Bordeaux 2009 (@ RvD): The bouquet is still a bit locked but shows creamy dark forest fruits, some cherries, luxurious oak and cedar. On the palate juicy dark berries like cassis and blackberries, also some red berries like raspberries and strawberries, creamy, chocolate, cedar, good acidity and beautifully round tannin and bitterness. The wine is in its young maturity stage and already pleasurable, but will improve a bit with a few more years of cellaring. Really nice wine 91 – 92

Opened and decanted 3+ hours ahead of dinner. This was wine #2 with our lamb chop family feast. Somewhat oaky and hot on the nose, but ultimately it revealed some nice black currant, chocolate raspberries, and creme de cassis. The palate is full, square, extracted, and somewhat creamy, with tons of chocolate blackberries, bitter dark chocolate, black currant, tangy cherries, wild herbs, and a slight raspberry tobacco note into the finish, which is refined but still course. I think this will be best after 2018 but it's opening up nicely now.

Drank over three days, and came away with similar impressions as two and a half years ago. Extracted, showing something less than phenolic ripeness, and excessive oak treatment, all of which contribute to a biting pips and stems greeness and bitter oak-imparted tannins. Modern in style to the point of being non-descript. Indeed, the wine put my mind to a recent tasting of the 2013 Shafer Merlot. This wine strengthens my view that Bordeaux experienced such hot temperatures during the 2009 growing season that phenolic ripeness was an issue. Many of the wines are flashy, Californiaesque if you will, but few are rounded, balanced, and representative of their place.

This is a more focus version of Poujeaux. Ripe black fruit (even riper than 08), slightly dried leafy and herbaceous notes up at the front, supported by nice intense sweet spices from the oak (definitely more than usual vintages). Rounded sexy texture with soft juicy tannin. Overall very integrated and very balanced. Can be even better if the alcohol is reduced by 0.5%.
Need more time in the cellar for better integration but definitely drinkable now. Almost Outstanding quality (90).

Fine wine. Dark garnet with red legs. Good red and black fruit mixture in the nose, quite fragrant and vibrant. Mostly red fruit in the mouth, chewy tannins are big but integrated into the flavors. Approachable now but should get even better with more time. Very nice indeed, and at $35 it doesn't break the bank. 4-12-16-9: 91/100.

My Grade: VG+. New World style, needs at least 2 hours decant. A bit too straight-laced to really enjoy now. Opaque purple, nose of alcohol, menthol, oak, cloves with dark fruit notes. Fairly lush mouthfeel with focused cassis, blackberries, noticeable toasted oak, great structure and firm mid palate, fine tannins, long finish. Big, serious and more of an intellectual pleasure than a sensual one at this stage. Should cellar this until 2020.

Modern, but still better than 2005 Bordeaux because the tannins are well resolved and easier to drink at this stage. Clearly designed for the American palate. So very kind of the French. Best with grilled lamb or cow.

Normally when I drink Bordeaux I like to drink Bordeaux. But, as many users have already noted, this claret is very modern in style--and very good! There is a certain amount of restrain that doesn't put it over the top. Good fruit and distinct chocolate notes. It may get even better with time but it is drinking very well now!

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #098; A Vertical of 17 vintages Poujeaux (By MM): Last wine of a 17 vintages vertical. (All tasting notes are in CT now.) This 2009 is a completely different style; much more modern….. or is it the vintage? I have a few, so I will find out after some years. My notes for tonight: In the bouquet a lot of creamy and round cassis as well as a good dose of beautiful oak. On the palate ripe cassis, plums and blackberries. A lot of luxurious oak. A firm amount of sweetness, but also good acidity. Friendly and soft, round tannin. Overall a beautiful wine which needs a few years of ageing, but I wonder if it has the persistence of the 2005. 91 - 92+? for tonight.

Nose: Savory like beef bouillon, pomgrenade and some oranges, not very fruity and quite wishy-washy. Smells a bit sour like vomit. Mouth: Wishy-washy at this stage. Some good coffee beans. Full bodied with lots of extract. A lot of tannins but they are of excellent quality. No bitterness. It is actually too early to rate this wine. I assume that in the future this wine will be in the 91-93 range. In a good cellar it will survive the next 20 years easily.

Based on the last couple of reviews I decided to revisit before I had promised myself - and I'm happy I did!! Almost black/dark purple color. Nose and palate not to complex at this point but fortunately it seems to have lost its "artificial smell". Dark berries, oak, pencil shavings and a little earthiness dominates. Medium+ body and good tannic grip on the finish but with a slightly unpleasant dryness to it. All in all - a much better experience what last time almost 3 years ago, although it leaves me thinking if this wine is a little over-extracted??

DTC (@ SS Bordeaux: Left or Right bank?): Creamy bouquet with red and dark berry fruits and good vanilla from the oak. On the palate juicy fruits, at first mostly red berries, but with some more airtime the dark forest fruits showed more prominent. A touch of sweetness balanced by good acidity and round and ripe tannin. A touch of pleasant bitterness in the finish. Very early maturity now, probably better around 2017 and I have a few, so there will probably a new TN around 2017 or 2018. For the moment I think the wine will be at its peak between 2018 and 2022+? 90+

Bordeaux 2009 vs. 2010 - Check in on 50 well known Chateaux: Tasted during a Wine advocate event - A matter of taste. Medium-dark ruby. Succulent nose of ripe fruit, some vanilla and oak with earthy notes. On the palate soft and balanced, ripeness of the 2009 coming through. This wine, often praised for a good value Bordeaux has often been too rustic for me but the 2009 is a real treat.

Nice nose, but the fruit seems to be completely overwhelmed by medicinal aspects: band-aids, dried herbs and forest floor. A bit of dark fruit on the attack, but this just isn't really my style. Its complex and interesting, but maybe not for people who like a balance with beautiful ripe fruits. Nice coffee and toffee/caramel on the mid-palate and finish, but it comes with astringency. Although its not my favorite, my score reflects this very good effort.
Good nose of dark fruits and coffee. Sweet dark fruits, mainly black currant and blueberry, coffee and vanilla on the palate. Medium to full bodied. Smooth even with a bit of tannin. Drinking pleasantly but a little bit fading of flavor with time. Good QPR.
Its my first try and the first bottle from the case brought recently. Will see if any improvement with time.

Been a year and a half or more since cracking one.. Notes of toasty oak, cedar, plum, tobacco and cafe/chocolate. The wine is big and rich but tannic as hell. I don't remember it being so dry. Def a great vintage, has the fruit and has the tannin. Sort of reminds me of some solid Washington state cabs, lacks the earth tones I like to find in bordeaux but still a good ass wine..

Decanted for 3 hours and served with grilled NY strips - similar flavor nose / flavor profile as prior tasting in 4/2013. "Big, clean nose - black currants, cassis, cedar & iron? On palate, similar flavors to nose with medium+body, sweet tannins & high acidity"
Really enjoyed - extracted / concentrated on palate but a great wine to enjoy with a grilled steak. 92-93. Would buy again.

Would have expected his wine to be more approachable than it was. Even after two hours of aeration and double decanting, it was backward and closed. Medium body. Nose developed nice red and black fruit, chocolate and tobacco within a vanilla/oak framework. On the palate very restrained and tannic. Very similar to some 96's in their youth. Double checked the label, wondering if I had taken a 2010 by mistake, but no. Open and pleasant phase seems to be over. Let's wait another 3-5 years before trying again.

Inky, opaque purple. The profoundly tantalizing aromas of black fruits and cedar had my mouth watering at first sniff. Unfortunately upon tasting the advertised fruit was not present, at least not in the abundance suggested by the nose. That said mine was not as harsh or tannic as others have reported. Hints of dark fruits on a smooth oaky background. Smooth, long finish with well balanced spice. A strong 92 that would have been a 98 if the flavors were like the aromas. I'm not complaining, it was enjoyable.

Shocking. In a vintage many tout as a drink now, simple pleasure treat, this wine was austere and backward. The tannins can rip your face off and the fruit is there but muted and reticent. Others have noted its youth, but I wonder if other 2009's are maturing this way. I tried one last year and it was much more generous and open. As this appears to be closing down, I will not touch another one of these for a few years or more.
Drank this along with a 2010 Poujeaux. Both wines were quite harsh. The nose opened up during the evening but on the palate they remained bitter, closed and muted. Couldn't pick up a lot besides little dark fruit and bitter coffee beans. This needs time in the cellar.

This was straight off the UPS truck to the table, so I suspect this would show a bit better with a few weeks to rest, but it was nonetheless a very good showing. This was in a group of the last of my '09 BDX futures arrivals and I had been waiting about 3 years to try this, so travel shock be damned! Not unexpectedly, this was a riper styled Poujeaux, very dark, but with lovely character showing more Cab than Merlot. Cassis, olive tapenade and blackberry flavors with suave but firm tannins. This is giving a lot of pleasure now but seems built for the long haul.

Deep, inky ruby, with oak, dark fruit and currant on the nose. Nice cassis notes and velvety and across the palate. Sexy and polished. A bit short on the finish, and grippy too. Good now, but I'd say a few more years to integrate will surely make it even better. 89-90 with room for a few more points.

I loved the gorgeous marine notes on this along with the pure cassis on the palate. The finish wasn't as long and as structured as I would expect, but its not uncommon in this vintage. A very polished wine that just edged out a 2008 Andrew Will Two Blondes in the tasting.

PNP, then consumed over two days. It was ready to go from the start with solid bouquet and pronounced fruit notes. It was still going strong the following day. Not tannic, but balanced overall.

What a pleasant surprise. I dialed my expectations way back for this bottle and wasn't expecting more than a good table wine. Excellent QPR for a 2009 Bordeaux. Popped and poured. Lively nose; not nearly as closed as the 2005s I've tasted. Good fruit, very ripe but missing a little acidity. Nice finish.

Lovely cedarbox/leather perfume with hints of ripe beries, gentle and balanced tannins upon opening. Acid moved forward after an hour, and it's charm when down a notch.

Good nose, better than previous bottle tasted one year ago. Aromatics and forward. Notes of camphor, vanilla, plum, and toasty oak. Chalky tannins and smooth on entry. Tannins have soften a bit since last year. Slightly dry mid-palate. Fresh acidity level. Bitter chocolate aftertaste with slight warmth at finish. Good balance overall. Medium-bodied with Good length and structure. Shows very strong oaks 2 hrs after uncorked, both on the nose and on the palate, almost Australian. Hmmmm, not sure if this will age nicely with strong oak and elevated acidity. 89 -91 pts.
Expressive nose: bright, ripe dark fruit, such as black cherry, bumble, note of meaty savouriness, vanilla, oak. On the palate, well balanced, medium acidity, medium plus finish with sweet black fruit at the end. Velvety, medium plus tannins. Can be enjoyed now, but it has the substance and potential for at least medium term ageing. One of the best buys from this vintage.

Drank it over three days. Held up very nicely. Very positive first impression of 2009 from bottle. Great fruit obviously, but also good acidity and very persistant mouthfeel. Not modern and hot as I would have feared. The high content of Merlot (40%) shows through on the nose, but fades a bit over the next two days where the cabernet is more visible. For once I agree with Parker's point (92)

Decanted for 4 hours and served with grilled NY Strips. Big, clean nose - black currants, cassis, cedar & iron? On palate, similar flavors to nose with medium+body, sweet tannins & high acidity. Very long finished and to me this was a nicely balanced (although very big and generous use of newer Oak) Cab/Merlot blend. I enjoyed it and my wife loved it - better with food but fine on it's own. 93+/-

Day 1) Nose of good quality oak, masking fresh blueberry scents, but fairly reticent overall. On the palate, an initial hit of oak was followed by a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, and good textured mouthfeel. It features a big tannic finish of very good length. Alcohol was noticable.
Day 2) Nose mostly unchanged, perhaps showing marginally better integrated oak. Palate also mostly unchanged, just a bit better integrated. A high pitched, greenish and acidic vein appeared at the back and finish.
Day 3) The wine was best on this day. A hint of fresh cut pipe tobacco and orange peel showed on the nose. The oak had settled. The finish was good. The alcohol was still high and the greenish vein remained.
Overall, the nose is tight. The body and texture are good. Alcohol is high, greenishness is present, and there's no WOW! factor, no real charm. This wine will probably improve with time, and it does need time, but even with age I do not see it scoring any higher. This has a lot of aging potential, acid and tannins are present in abundance, so do not be afraid to hold it for quite a while. I have another, and will give it at least two more years.
Finally, this wine was perhaps only marginally better than the Kirkland Signature Medoc 2009 consumed over the same span, which features a beautiful bouquet and is just a touch thinner than the Poujeaux.

Continuing my journey into those cheaper 09 Bdx. Poured half of bottle into decanter and drank over several hours. Nose with dark fruit and sour cream potato chips. Good body but the fruit is a bit less rich than many other 09, and perhaps this is a reason why the fine tannins are a bit more visible, and then particularly the generous use of oak that somewhat dominates the palate, together with the sweet red and dark fruit and coffee. Intensive medium finish.
Nice but unlike other 09, the oak is too dominant for me (or too little fruit, if you can say that about an 09) to really enjoy now. Much preferred the 09 Batailley the other day for drinking now. Will wait with my next bottle of 09 Poujeaux for several years, and this saying about oak being like make up keeps coming to my mind... 90+

Deep color with berry and chocolate aromas. Nice black fruit and good finish. This wine had a nice weight to it with soft tannins and is drinking well now. Decanted for 1 hour. It will be nice to see how it evolves. Great value for this vintage.

Second bottle of this vintage a year after I tried this first, because I always liked the wine of this chateau I was lucky a week ago when I bought the rest of a case 2009 for 25€ each....., deep black to purple colour, some hints of overripe fruit in the nose, little roasty, blackberrys, on the palate smooth tannin, mineralic, acidity bites, a little austere, middle to fullbodied, good finish, I will wait some years to open the next bottle because all components are a little inharmonic, maybe this wine is beginning to shut down......., first bottle had a smooth and fullbodied sweet blackberrybody with a lot of adstringent tannin......87- 91+?

With each bottle, I like this wine less. The ripe dark fruit and oak treatment are superb, but the alcohol seems already to be gaining the upper hand. I will drink these in the shorter term, as they still give pleasure but don't promise happy aging.

Similar in profile to previous bottles, but for my palate this needs a good 5 hours in the decanter to blow off some of its volatile alcohol. Unfortunately, some of the complexity disappears in that time also. This may very well not hold together for the long term, contrary to my initial impression. Its New World style is showing more and more, but this is still an appealing wine for current and shorter-term drinking, tastefully proportioned.

Amazing 2009 Bordeaux... I was able to pick up 4 of them for 29.99.. Will be looking for plenty more.. great nose of earth and currant.. consumed over a 4 day period.. one large glass a night.. just got better and better.. will have to buy more and sit on them for a couple of years.. though is drinking great right now! just delicious..
91 pts

Perhaps a bit early, but this is a very competently made Moulis en Medoc, however one without any real fireworks. Plenty of ripe fruit, medium tannin, mediocre finish. If I had more I'd try to wait for secondary characteristics to emerge in 5+ years. 87-88

Generally consistent with previous bottles. A couple hours of air blew away most of the heat, and the structure seemed a bit softer than previously. I'm enjoying drinking these right now, but this wine should hold up to 10 years.

With an hour of air this young Bordeaux shows it's ripe fruit. A lot of tannins but nice ones which give the wine body. Aroma's of dark ripe fruit, marzipan, coffee and cacao. The wine came togother some more on day two. A little alcohol sharpness. Great now although it makes you look like a chow-chow.

First time tasted a Poujeaux. After 30 mins in the decanter, notes of black cherry, plum, mint and camphor with hints of toasty oak. Soft, round, and medium-bodied. Taste lingered on the back palate for a long time. Dry aftertaste. Good amount of acidity (could acidity be too high??) and fruits. Alcohol supposed to be 14% but there wasn't much of "heat" at the end. Surprisingly good and approachable soon after uncorked. After 5 hrs in the decanter, added on more weight and complexity, notes of butterscotch (really?), black berry, cherry, and plum with stronger toasty oak emerged and alcohol were more prominent. Great value and interesting wine but I am unsure about the acidity level.

One sip on opening: some rather fluffed up modern tannins gave a surprisingly light feel. Low temperature also emphasised unattractive modern makeup in aroma: burnt wood, dark cherry liqueur, nuts, toast, rich damson jam. In the middle of a diverse tasting, 2.5 hours later (i.e. after some air for the wine and some palate-numbing from older wines for me) the tannins now more taut, with just a little acidity bound in. Nose only showing small notes: mint, flowers, minor wood, sweet raisin, burnt berries, smoke, coffee. Palate displaying the near-Californian sweetness of that damson jam; although there is the above structural compensation for that. Chocolate liqueur notes in the finish. Pleasant grip. Apparently taut and ungenerous; nobody especially rated it. Disappointing, because I was planning to put some of these away. Therefore, I checked back in on it the next morning. A full, heady, yet somehow also restrained nose of mulberry to damson, with minor sweet-cherry undertones, and occasional pulses of chocolate and coffee. Now the finish is frankly rather wonderful, with a gorgeous, relatively savoury, dark tobacco quality, and just a little of that chocolate liqueur, plus promising, relatively velvety grip, and rare length. Rather compacted; with potential to open into generous indulgence and to offer additional flavour notes of complexity. In summary, via its warm fruit, smoke and chocolate, this wine is reminiscent of past ripely-styled Poujeaux' like '89, 90, 93, 95, 97. However, there's marginally more concentration, refinement, presence and hence likely eventual complexity. 91 to 92 its now; potential for up to 95. Key point for drinking now = I'd give this a five hour decant.

Goedhius Bordeaux Cru Classe Tasting (Saatchi Gallery): Incredible bargain compared to the other '09s. Deep purple inky colour. Nose of cassis, plumbs, earth, brioche and vanilla. Wonderful feel in the mouth with a medium length. Best Poujeaux I have tasted.

Deep, almost inky crimson-violet color. Beautiful French oak treatment shows in the complex torrefaction, roasted marshmallow, toasty, buttery, cinnamon, anise nose, but the fruit still peeks through, with lovely notes of melon and perfume. On the palate, appealing ripeness, more toasty oak, and fine but ample tannins. The alcohol (14% abv) is in excellent balance behind the wood, for now. Decent acidity. This is remarkably approachable and fun right now, with structure to age 10 years, perhaps longer, depending on how well the alcohol remains in check as the oak recedes. Superb wine, fatter and more flashy than classic Poujeaux, but clearly a success. This shows much of the general character that distinguishes the best of the 2009 Bordeaux I've tasted, with no trace of the fumey alcohol or the odd green streak that spoil many of them. As always, an excellent value. 51% cabernet sauvignon, 41% merlot in this blend. Minimal decant, this barely budged during 3 hours in the glass.

VW Bordeaux 2009 tasting (retail): Very ripe, modern and approachable. Cherries on the expressive nose, almost "boosy". Fruity with more cherries and hint of earth on the palate. Plush and easy drinking. Enjoyable wine, but no real complexity and not worth $40. 89-90

decanted for two hours, great wine, good length, should be best starting 2020, how much better can a top tier wine be that cost 50 times more than what you spend for this bargain ? i will rate it 91-92 now, but can easiliy be 93-94 ten years from now.
Tasted with friends to get a reference. Open 1 hour, no decant! Some quite different opinions about this "baby". I had high hopes based on en primeur reviews and the reviews on this site but honestly I was quite disappointed. It must be said that I have very limited experience with young bordeaux wines but I found the fruit rather artificial with dominant oak and alcohol. To my palate it was overall out of balance and not particular enjoyable at this point. Two of my friends liked it very much and saw a lot of potential - I will revisit in 5 years and I hope they and you guys are right. For now it is "only" a 88p in my book.

2hr decant. Nose was rather shy, but showed some ripe blackberries, saline, and strong stone character. Palate was surprisingly approachable, with fine soft tannins. Quite fresh, with plum and blackberry flavors leading into a moderate finish of dark berries, mild toast, and chalky minerality. Quite nice, approachable, but not a lot of depth and complexity. Sexy, ripe, and plush, with nice poise and balance. Still, seems like it's missing something...

Also the new style Poujeaux. A somewhat sweet start, but good juice and full bodied in combination with good and fresh acidity. In fact even elegant in this youthful stage and that is not like Poujeaux in the past. There is good oak and cassis juice. Happy that I bought a few. Hope to taste this again somewhere else around 2016, so I can make a decision when to open my own bottles. (Normally I waited with Poujeaux until it was at least 10 - 12 years old, but this vintage might be ready sooner.)

2009 Poujeaux shows the estate made a big jump in quality since it was purchased by the owners of Chateau Clos Fourtet in St. Emilion. Stephane Derenoncourt is lending his skills to the winery as well. The 2009 is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Ripe blackberries, cassis, olives, spice and pepper make up the perfume. This thick, rich, full bodied, powerful wine sould drink well young. 90-92 Pts

2009 chateau poujeaux

The harshness has eased after a couple of hours decant. Perfectly enjoyable but this still needs some time. Try again in 2024.
Night 2: having been cling filmed in a decanter! Still plenty of guts, obv that much softer. That “lavender” has returned. Verdict remains come back in 2024.

For sure will get better with time and we would suggest 3-5 years more before attempting it unless one loves juicy ripe fruit side of young claret. Solid 90 for now

Mid+ garnet
Heady yet refined bouquet of cigar box, cedarwood, sauteed herbs and black fruits.

All in all, a bold Poujeax at the beginning of at least a 10 year drinking window with lots of room for improvement towards earthy secondaries in exchange for loss of fruit. Drink or Hold

Revised my note...see below
Hmm, I usually appreciate good Bordeaux and was looking forward to this wine but it just wasn't cutting it tonight.

2009 Bordeaux tasting (at my home): uncorked 9 hours prior to tasting
dark opaque red-purple-black
intense merlot-chocolate nose of dark fruits with earthy notes
full bodied, firm tannins, well balanced and harmonised, powerful, rich, lot of chocolate flavours with dark fruits, structured, complexed, long rustic aftertaste, tannic finish.
already enjoyable though still very young and can further age many years.
after 36 hours: excellent!
after 48 hours: the wine became partially oxidised; still drinkable in a way

Decanted for 4 hours, which was essential. Modern nose of red fruits and oak. Fine acidity and round tannins. On the palate silky with a creamy, round texture. Probably more California than Bordeaux at this early stage but very well-balanced, polished and stylish. Drinking well now with a proper decant but has the stuffing and structure to age well also.

Nice nose, but the fruit seems to be completely overwhelmed by medicinal aspects: band-aids, dried herbs and forest floor. A bit of dark fruit on the attack, but this just isn't really my style. Its complex and interesting, but maybe not for people who like a balance with beautiful ripe fruits. Nice coffee and toffee/caramel on the mid-palate and finish, but it comes with astringency. Although its not my favorite, my score reflects this very good effort.

I spent three days with this wine:

Not a bad wine, but as others have pointed out, it seemed a bit disjointed. Better on the second day, but still needs more time in bottle.

Very Delicious. Rich, sweet dark fruit with hint of oak/vanilla. Only decanted for about an hour. No reason to wait for this to age. A great value for $35-40.

Nose has closed somewhat but still lots of primary notes. Full of tannins and needs to settle down. Going through an awkward phase.

90-92 Pts
