Fabulous All Sauternes Tasting Dinner: Part Deux (Brad's Place, St. Paul, MN): Very dark amber color. Drank a glass over an hour. From Steve's dank basement treasure trove, very tattered label, with a some of the name intact, cork is saturated and emblazoned with 1945 on it. The wine was in good shape, approximating what you would expect at almost 75 years of age. The nose is a little more reticent, but the palate reveals a dark core of brown sugar, sweet, spiced banana bread, brandied spice cake, candied orange, Grand Marnier, citrus candied apricot, apple honey, coffee, citrus peel, dark and brooding with a palate coating texture and long finish. It was quite a treat to taste this. 92+ to 93pts.

Papies LWE - Mouton 86 vs Cos 86 and some other friends (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Good bottle and in neck level with the cork 1945 age clearly visible. Torn label but 1945 still on there Dark caramel in colour, toffee colour even. Pure apricot on the nose such a dense nose. The wine is still very much alive and can last another 20yrs easily (maybe more than that if kept well) and even the alchohol that dies off at this stage is very present. Lacks the complexity of a younger wine but this is a superb experience. Very very nice. Not sure how we can even start to think of a rating for this wine so we will not.

Wine was opened for a few friends and in great condition for its age. The bottle was carmelized and the wine was very aromatic with apricot and floral essence with vanilla and creme brulee tones. Finish was strong with citrus and peach with candied fruits. Very nice old Sauternes.

Caramel. Drinks well, but interest comes primarily from esotheric/historical reasons. Buy for the context, not the wine...
