1972 Bordeaux horizontal tasting: While better balanced than the Margaux with less prominent acidity this had a fair bit of musty notes and sous bois. Seemed a bit fresher than my previous bottle. Considerably less concentrated though than the Haut Brion next to it

Low expectations. A bad year that is probably way past best drink date. The wine was in very good state. Not damaged. At first very much strawberry on the nose. Surprisingly fresh and acidity. After a couple of hour in decanter it open up and got better . Lots of smokiness, tar and leather. Not the most complex Bordeaux but fun to taste a 50 year old.

Tasted blind as a pair with the 1972 Ausone, offered by the generous host, his birthday vintage. We came to a good landing point on the age as these wines were deeply tertiary. A lot of discussions were done on what it was with Barolo and Brunello also being mix he mix, especially for the Ausone which was deeply pitched. The Mission had some farmyard/brett which made several at our table correctly point towards Bdx. Apparently 1972 was not a good Bordeaux vintage, so it was no surprise that the bottles did not have much fruit left. The good thing about old Claret though is that they don’t oxidise and just become very tame and tertiary. I enjoyed this pair.

Opened this almost perfect bottle (bottom neck fill) side-by-side with an equally perfect 72 Ausone during birthday dinner. While the Mission was easily identified as an old Bordeaux due to some brett, nobody had the 72 Ausone as a right bank Bordeaux. Ausone was aromatically much more muted and a fairly strict wine it was arguably in better shape. While also in relatively good shape, the Mission had already this sweetness of very old wine.

Historic note (recorded Aug 06). Brown cardboardy wine with just a trace of fruit. Poor bottle.
