I picked this bottle up through Brentwood Auctions for a pretty penny. Justifying the spend due to the acclaim. I figured the annual family trip to Sedona was a suitable setting to pull.

Upon opening, this wine is full throttle JLC Hermitage. On the nose and palate, it’s unmistakable. This vintage is in the early window of visitation. Even then, I would consider holding this wine for at least another 5-10. Personally, work through some of the lesser greats and stash 2010 for its 20th birthday.

98+ today. Triple digits in the near future

Grosses Syrah-Kino. Jetzt bis 2045 geniessen.

  • Beautiful. Two hour decant did the trick. Purely intoxicating nose of tobacco and fresh berries. Palate to match, with some added mushroom and baking spice. Juicy, balanced, complex, silky. Lovely Chave.

  • Decanted 5 hours in advance. Regal deep ruby/purple. Early on, stemminess and wintergreen dominate, but then blackberry confiture, a bit of blueberry, and soil rise to the fore. Medium weight but powerful and mouth filling due to strong acidity. The fruit just expands in the mouth with earth and bitter chocolate to accompany it. This is the most muscular of the great vintages of Chave Hermitage I’ve drunk recently (2016 and 1998 being the other standouts). After around 2 hours in the glass, the tannins became more noticeable and the wine clenched up. Fabulous Hermitage which should effortlessly reach its 40th birthday, but it may be relatively uneven over the next 10 years or so until it decides it is ready to fully emerge.

I was curious as to how this would show the next day after closing up last night. In fact, quite open and supple but now the exuberant fruit takes a back seat to tons of soil, and citrus has appeared. The tannins are furry and long but not harsh. Still fantastic.
