  • Perfect fill and cork. Beautiful mature nose displaying sweet red fruit, strawberry jam, cherry, dry cherry, strong tobacco and leather, a hint of ash, sous bois, sap and limestone mineral. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered sweet yet pure red fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity and mineral, and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with tobacco and sous bois at the end. Apparently it consists of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. I am guessing a Rhone red blend. This is drinking beautifully as there is very generous fruit. A great testament to the importance of proper cellaring.

  • Worst red of the evening for me. A yeasty beer like node that reminded me of the 94 white. Leather and saddle on the nose, but no fruit. High acidity as well, which might help with food, but it was nothing like the easy drinking fruit bomb I remember from the last time. Bad bottle according to Jelle, who also preferred this to the 81.

  • My last bottle..... alas! Having bought two cases en primeur for 6 EUR per bottle this has given me the opportunity to follow the development of what remains one of my most favourite wines; during its eary years (say 1985-1989) the wine had a color as black as Egypt's night, with primary fruit impressions of blueberries, boisenberries, cherries litterally exploding right out the glasses; in time this changed and from 1995-98 the impressions of dried figs, dried prunes, leather, and an almost portlike impression (that reminded me of Taylor vintage port "tealeeves"") began to dominate the nose. On the palate the wine remained always a pleasure to drink, never entering a closed fase, like some other vintages of Trevallon sometimes tend to do. The color is now a mature brick red but shining very clear and bright in the glass. Later in life the wine began to taste sweeter, probably the Syrah grape gaining the upperhand on the cabernet sauvignon. Lets pay tribute to Eloy Dürbach, his family and winemaking staff for producing such pleasurable wines! The cork is still in excellent condition; the wine should not be decanted too long (30 minutes max), as it is beginning to go downhill at last, I have to confess. With the 1983 now gone I am looking forward to drink my bottles of the 1990 Trevallon vintage, which is reported to be just as good, although different in character.

  • Domaine de Trevallon (Rouge) Offline (Alba, London): Lovely nose, spicy, fruity, full. Now vanilla. Lovely sweet fruit, richly rounded, some glycerin, lovely texture. slutty. Fruit cake. Porty in a good way. Ripe southern Rhone style. *****

  • Severely ullaged - mid to low shoulder with clear signs of leakage around base of capsule, so expecting little. Decanted for sediment and started immediately. Glorious bright, clear mid garnet to brick red in colour - I know I'm a sucker for decent colour and clarity, but this really does look gorgeous. Figgy nose, slightly porty, hints of garrigue, somewhere between a mature claret and a clean, aged Musar. Sweet fruit on the attack, almost too sweet, slight suggestions of oloroso, but then calms down and the (remaining, subtle) fruit comes through. My wife describes it as sweet in a fungal rather than a clean way. Gentle acidity and good length. The sweetness of fruit continues for a couple of hours, then a slight sstringency on the finish as it starts to fade. Lovely stuff. First experience of Trevallon so not sure how an aged one should taste, but my guess is that this is on form and not troubled by the ullage. Lovely, but drink up.
