  • Second bottle with lower top shoulder fill. Ruby with wide translucent rim, very slight browning only. Tobacco on the nose. Beautiful, sweet red fruit and earth on the palate. No noticeable tannins. Short to medium finish. Beautiful wine. Would have guessed mature Burgundy blind.

  • Bottle in excellent condition with bottom neck fill and cork only half way soaked. Slow ox'ed for about 1h and drank over the following two. Have been disappointed more often than not with older Brunello vintages that either showed dull or oxidative so this was a great surprise. Still a fairly dark garnet core with however clear bricking towards the rim. Very fragrant on the nose with plenty of flowers and herbs, similar Burgundian on the palate, which had good acidity and hence a great match to pasta at home but is in great balance with fine tannins still providing this otherwise fairly round and sweet Sangiovese a structure. Medium finish. Looking at the good reviews of other 1981 Brunellos here, it looks like the Consorzio might have been a bit conservative when awarding this vintage only 3 out of 5 stars. Enjoy now if you get hold of an 81 BdM.
