Aromas of smoke, lead pencil, dried cherry and dried blackberry. Flavors of smoke, dried cherry, dried blackberry, tar and earth. Ends with a 30-35 second finish with cherry and smoke notes. Evolved as it opened and very much alive. Excellent.

Same bottle as EC. This was filled with plum pudding, and oxidative cherry note.. However it was not complely gone with notes of spice cake, maerated berries and some fine qualities to the midpalate. Overall not correct enough to score.

This example of 55 Gaffeliere Naudes shows a fruitcakey, plum pudding nose with subtle Christmas spices. Moderate oxidation obscures any clear details on the palate.

Had the 59 Gaffeliere Naudes a few weeks back and this is just as good. Really impressive quality that was produced at this estate in the 50s before quality went south for a few decades. Excellent top shoulder fill but a wet cork top made me nervous. In the glass this is however showing a healthy garnet with barely any browning towards a wide transparent rim. On the nose soil, wood spices and some medicinal notes joining the dark dry fruit. Sweet redish fruit on the smooth palate with completely resolved tannins. Good length. Perhaps just a notch below the 59.

A stellar example of fully mature, Merlot-based Bordeaux at its peak. Silky and soft in texture, the medium/full-bodied wine offers up tobacco leaf, cigar box, thyme, burning embers and mushrooms alongside the sweet, ripe, red cherries. With freshness and some sweetness remaining on the palate, this is well-worth seeking out in the auction market, as not everyone knows how good these wines are.
