From magnum. Incredibly fresh apple with good lemon hints. Far better balance and energy than most 1990s today. Never would have thought 1990 if tasted blind.
Popped and poured. Very linear start with plenty of orchard fruit aromas and flavors, seemingly lean. Picked up weight and density from middle to finish.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Ripe stone fruit. Moderate maturity, in fact very fresh for any white wine at this age. Flavors and aromas are very good, but the concentration and density of this wine were particularly memorable and noteworthy. A rare treat, thank you, Michael.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
My WOTN. This Ponsot/Chezeaux was amazingly floral with simply alluring aromatics. A subtle and balanced 1988 on the palate, with equal contributions of earthy and fruit flavors. Long and well textured.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
From magnum. Decanted ~2 hours before serving, but that wasn't nearly enough. Lots of dense black fruit, faint red cherry hints. Great fruit, moderate spice hints, no really evolutionary development coming through yet. Didn't really show Vosne spice and character to me tonight, but I think that's just its youthfulness. Still this was better than another magnum tasted last year.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Served alongside the 1997 vintage. This 1990 comes across as more ripe, showing a good combination of fruit and evolved aromas and flavors. Less expressive of terroir to me tonight. Others preferred this to the '97.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Served alongside the 1990. Ripe and powerful black fruit aromas and flavors with a slight roasted meat character. Long, powerful, very fresh and vibrant. I easily preferred this vs the '90, while some others disagreed tonight.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Lots of pretty ripe fruit with good concentration and slight hints of espresso and liqueur. An unusual and sweet note protruded slightly near the finish that I didn't fully enjoy, but overall a really good wine. A don't recall ever having this '96 before, so didn't have a complete frame of reference.
This is an extreme styled Champagne. Very large and monolithic to me, coming across as slightly underripe. There is something very exciting and energetic about this wine, but it's just not a style intended for me.
1990 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
An impressive performance for a 1991, this showed lots of reasonably fresh apple, moderate intensity, but overall very good balance.

2008 Domaine de Montille Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Nicely floral with very good orchard fruit that still shows a touch too much new oak. Drinking nicely now. Others liked this more than I did tonight.

1995 Bernard Dugat-Py Mazis-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Flawed
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
Two bottles were opened, both were a stewy mess that I will hypothesize was due to heat damage somewhere in their history.

1986 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge 87 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
Very good fruit remains, just with a little too much structure. Firm with pronounced tannins, particularly near the end.

Not quite as exciting as another bottle from a few weeks ago. Ripe red and black cherry with moderate spice and floral notes.
