    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Montagne-St. Émilion

This wine is made of 55% Cabernet Franc and 45% Merlot. The 2005 is in its maturity stage now with still good black forest fruits, a pleasant dose of oak, good acidity and soft tannin. Can be cellared for another 3+ years. The 2011 is still youthful with creamy, primary dark berries, good acidity and a firm dose of sticky tannin and a good concentration. The barrel sample of the 2014 shows good and youthful fruits and has a firm constitution. Never had this biological wine before, but it was a pleasant surprise for the price (around $20). 2005: 87, 2011: 86+ and 2014: 87+?

  • 2014 Famille Bouey Montagne-St. Émilion Château Maison Blanche Louis Rapier

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Montagne-St. Émilion

From the best plot the owner of Château Maison Blanche Montagne-St. Émilion makes a special wine: He called it after his ancestor "Louis Rapier". The Cabernet Franc vines date from 1955 and the Merlot vines from 1943. There is no sulfur used at all and the wine will get 16 - 18 months of 100% new French oak. The result of this barrel sample up to now is a wine with a creamy bouquet with dark and red berries. On the palate the wine has something really special which I can't describe and don't particularly like. There are red and black forest fruits and something that reminds of brown spiced biscuit. There is a sweet note, some acidity and round, slightly sticky tannin. Not sure if the decision not to use any sulfur at all was a good one and if because of that the wine tastes odd. No score for the wine, but I would like to taste the result again when the wine is in the bottle for a few years.

Would like to taste both wines again around 2020. 2012: 87+?, 2010: 88+

Good fresh acidity as well as a touch of sweetness, pleasant tannin. An elegant and beautiful wine. Early maturity now.

  • 2012 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

This will be one note for the 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2012. This wine is made of 80 years old vines from 5 different plots. 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. The grapes are not destemmed and co-fermented in concrete. After that aged for 12 months in 25% new oak, 40% one year old barrels and 35% in two year old barrels. The 2012 (which was climatically an even year) has 14.7 abv and good red and dark berry fruits as well as garrigue in the bouquet. Same on the palate and a beautiful balance between acidity and sweetness as well as round, slightly sticky tannin. In 2009 the vineyards suffered from hail in April and May, so the yield was low. The result however is a wine with beautifully ripe fruits in the bouquet with a pleasant dose of oak and some rustic impressions. On the palate the same ripe dark berries, garrigue, some licorice and laurel, sweet spices, good acidity and round tannin as well as a touch of pleasant oak. The bouquet of the 2006 is not very expressive, but it shows some dark forest fruits. On the palate there are dark forest fruits, some chocolate, sweet spices, mild and round tannin with still a pleasant bite. Overall a full bodied and friendly wine with a considerable amount of sweetness. The bouquet of the 2004 is not very expressive either. On the palate there are dark forest fruits and dark cherries, sweet spices, garrigue and minerals, a touch of sweetness and slightly sticky tannin.
    Concluding:
    2012: Still youthful. Wait until 2018+. Score for now 92 – 93+
2009: Early maturity now and because of the sweetness already easy to like. 90+
2006: Ready now and for several years to come. 92+
2004: Even though the tannin is still a bit sticky, the wine is ready now and the next 4+ years. 91+

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

This will be one tasting note for the 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2012. The grapes for this wine are not destemmed and the wine ages for 12 months in 40% new oak and 60% in one year old barrels. Especially the 2007 and 2009 also have some sweet impressions in the nose and of course the 2004 shows some development. On the palate the wines have the same impressions as in the bouquet as well as some iron. In the 2012 the minerals are quite up front and the wine is more tight than the 2009 and also lighter. It has good acidity and sticky tannin. The 2009 has a pleasant touch of sweetness which is beautifully balanced by good acidity, also a lot of minerals and more smooth tannin than the 2012. The 2007 has mainly dark fruits, also minerals and iron as well as some licorice. A touch of sweetness, firm acidity and good tannin. The 2004 is mature now and also shows some herbs, a nice balance between acidity and sweetness and soft tannin.
    Concluding:
2012: Elegant wine, still too young. Wait until 2018 and drink until 2024+? 91
2009: Beautiful and tasty wine. Early maturity now, but can last another decade. 92
2007: Beautifully structured wine, showing what it has. Ready now and approx. until 2020. 91
2004: A fairly light and elegant style, completely ready now and the next few years. 90

In the bouquet all vintages are more or less the same and show red and dark berries, minerals, blood, bacon, pepper and are rustic.

This will be one tasting note for the 2004, 2007, 2009 and 2012. The grapes for this wine are not destemmed and the wine ages for 12 months in 40% new oak and 60% in one year old barrels. In the bouquet all vintages are more or less the same and show red and dark berries, minerals, blood, bacon, pepper and are rustic. Especially the 2007 and 2009 also have some sweet impressions in the nose and of course the 2004 shows some development.
