Boursin and tomato salsa crackers
Charred grapes and mozzarella
Lamb loin with crushed potatoes, tapenade and peas
At 67PM
Better than last time. Some depth. But not absolutely top drawer.

All I'd hoped for - smooth, refined, detailed - just brilliant.

Off the list at 67PM: I'm not 100% sure if this is the wine we had - but it was a classic ice wine, riesling in style, even if the grape is something called vidal

Trout paté
Slow cooked shoulder of lamb with aromatic potato gratin
Cheese
Crème brûlée
Attractive, quite vanillin, not much toast or oxidation

Somewhat sweet, but glorious over the top unctuousness and perfume.

Sensational. A bit of everything - blackcurrant, herbs, a sweet middle, a twist of green. Nad thought at first it might be corked, just as I had with my first sniff a few years back at 67PM, but he soon came round to the fact that it was fine.

As ever with these Jouans, explosive red fruits. super.

Botrytis, marmalade, flowers. Gorgeous.

Figs and parma ham
Harissa steak, tomato sauce, potato wedges
Advanced, not much fizz, and not much zing. It got much better in the glass. Very buttery. But not a patch on previous bottles. I've now had this wine five times. Three times it's been amazing and twice it's been just like this.

Heady, voluptuous, extravagantly perfumed - this was sensational.

Pretty strawberry and cherry fragrance, but earth and iron too. It's not explosive like it was in its youth, but there's power behind that prettiness. Super, and entering its prime.

Opened six or seven hours in advance, but not decanted. To start with it had a glorious smoky bacon aroma, but this receded. Powerful and savoury, but past bottles have had a piercing blackcurrant core which was missing here. An attractive mature hermitage, but not the superstar that it has been.

So fresh and vibrant you wonder if it's genuine. [This bottle had the black and gold paper label A faker would surely have used a stencilled bottle]. Brown sugar sweetness, but with twist upon twist of fruit and umpteen other flavours. Absolutely amazing.

Sardines paté
Boeuf bourgignon
Mont d'Or and Lancashire
Old batch, old label. Nice, creamy, rich, very mature wine, but on the downslope and lacking the grip and energy that it used to have.

Poised, oily, restrained - some grandeur
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Classy, balanced, chalk and red fruits, probably has more to give, quite without the wildness of past vintages, this was super refined.

The plushest red fruit style burgundy you'll ever need, quite full, not deep, but very attractive
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Much better than the last showing. There was a touch of the acrid, but it was just a note and the palate showed all the rich apricottiness you'd expect.

Crispy sole with shrimps
Roast beef
Mont d'Or
Excellent toastiness, dry, not much fizz
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Attractive acrid edge, focused, citrus - super delineation
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Savoury, rather too much oxidation
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
The most raspberryish burgundy ever, the fruit quite extraordinarily vivid, but plenty of layers too.

Crab and grapefruit salad
Lamb steaks and crushed potatoes
Served a bit too cold, it got lost in the riesling glasses. We switched to flutes and it showed much better, but by then I was too busy cooking to give it the attention it deserved.

Wow! It's so sharp, so piercing, the flavour all lime wrapped in coconut - a hint of earth - thrilling stuff

Just perfect. The best bottle yet. All the cedar and cab you could want, tangy, vibrant. Utterly wonderful.

Deep pink gold, still a decent amount of sweetness, though it's lost its lushness, and it lingers on beautifully.

Sardine paté
Braised chicken with sherry and cream
Huge expectations after the previous bottle in the summer, and this wasn't quite as good, though obviously a fine rich grand bottle.

Taut, dry, mineral - exciting
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
A hint of funk, sappy, autumnal, good depth - not showy, but brilliant
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Hanging on, has the stillness of old wine, but with brown sugar sweetness - faded but attractive.

As is often the case, a youngster served after old wines can taste a bit confected. I'm sure it was as good as all the previous bottles.

At The Square
Tight, sheer, powerful, not expressive today, but hinting at more to come
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Sensational again. Vibrant, spicy, and for all its richness, not at all fat.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Smoky, some funk and earth, fully resolved, a lovely old Gevrey really, but it lacks some of that Rousseau luminosity that I'd hoped for

At the Square: mellow, bruised apple style sweetie

At Chez Bruce
For all its ripeness, this still has a bracing edge, and the toastiness is divine.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Minty, cedary, fne grained and showing amazing lightness despite its substance. Much more like a top claret than last night's Clos 07.
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Bright, vivacious, red fruited. The flavour profile is essentially the same as the villages, but it just has that extra bit of authority.

At The Square
An acrid edge, which here I loved, and then a fantastic deep toastiness. Thrilling.

Sumptuous ripe meursault, lifted by subtle toasty oak. Bigger than the 08, equally lovely

Just a tiny hint of sweat on the nose at the start, but then it's just layer on layer of strawberry fruit, gentle, sweet, utterly gorgeous

Unctuous, but fresh and sappy. Quite a beauty already

[There was also a dinner at mine on 6 July 2012, but for some reason notes from this period have gone missing.]
Ginger and dried fruits on the palate, soft and gently fizzy, clearly old, but not at all oxidative, just very stately
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Hot, oxidised, just about drinkable, but why bother

Absolutely stunning yet again (our fourth bottle in as many months) - deep, mysterious, silky, fresh, this has it all seems way better than the CSJ and the Chambertin in this vintage.

The intense raisin flavour is lovely, but it's too gloopy, an instance where the texture undermines the taste
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
High acid and savoury, but with a sumptuous sweet sappy core to balance - dried fruits, lemon, marmite - but really there so much flavour here, it's beyond description. Thrilling
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Lean and austere to start with, but after a while the toastiness came through - amazing depth and dimension

Mouthwatering chardonnay fruit, a citrus twist, some camphor, some bite, fantastic

Charcoal, game, cedar, pungent ripe and multi-layered, claret doesn't get much better than this. On a roll tonight, with the third spectacular bottle in a row,

On a night when we'd already had three thrilling bottles, this was merely bloody good - lean appley chenin, a bit tight, but obviously powerful
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Genuinely sweet, smooth, nutty, herbs, dried fruit, intriguing and delicious - a nice surprise

[Bought Autumn 1998]: very very mature, fruit cakey raisiny fruit, the fizz very gentle, but focused, long and fine
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Very refined, minerally viognier, precise, layered and with a discreet sense of power
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Still youthful and vigorous, sweet plummy fruit, still oaky, but altogether harmonious
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
I still find the gush of raspberry fruit on this quite exhilarating - and yet there's spice and nuance too - exciting
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
This has a gorgeous limey twist to lift the apricot fruit, mouthwateringly delicious

Bought five years ago. Deep, mineral, toasty, dry - very very fine and serious, perfect balance - spectacularly good
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Attractive straw gold, full bodied, thick lanolin fruit, waxy,a hint of butterscotch, but low acid - ultimately rather dull and therefore for such a grand wine a big disappointment
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Dark red and youthful looking, very plush, deep ripe fruit, powerful, but a bit foursquare - a very nice classy claret, but of course, we were hoping for more than this
Post a Comment / Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Report Issue
Bright gold, but still bursting with life, fresh apricot fruit, long and powerful - superb

2006 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut 96 Points

Wonderful! A blasting toasty bouquet, then so many layers with citrus, tropical fruits, minerals. This has always been fantastic, but it seems to be getting even better.

1982 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 95 Points
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
This was just beautifully harmonious - a bit of dust and a twist of green, but then warm, blackcurrant classic mature pauillac.

2017 Henri Jouan Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Echezeaux Vieilles Vignes 94 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
A real blast of raspberry pinot, but with loads of undertones of earth, undergrowth, iron etc. Brillliant.

2010 Château Suduiraut
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
This was from a half-finished bottle in the fridge which I think was opened last Christmas, i.e. seven months ago. Hardly any signs of deterioration - thick, coconutty and very sweet.
