LIN—E—AR as all getup. White lemon pith, white stone fruit, chalk, and some salt rock. A straight-laced L7 that has absolutely zero interest in being anything but a wallflower on the palate dance floor. There is no beginning, middle, or end. It just “is” in the mouth. Near flavorless right now, with a $7 Sutter Home White Zinfandel depth that barely has enough concentration or intensity to motivate even an ADHD 3 year old to get out of bed. Hold this for 4-5+ years and hope the “fruit” holds out. 83-85? points.

My girl liked it more than me, stating, “It’s kinda like the Trader Joe’s screwcap Pinot Grigio we used earlier to cook the pasta with.” Yes honey... exactly. So.... ya. That.

Proper, clean, pure, correct, and very well behaved, this is a flawless Chablis that has one main flaw... it lacks personality. The only fault to be had here is that I have trouble distinguishing anything about it that particularly stands out.

So it gets points for superb balance, seamless execution, purity of fruit, and a nicely clean finish. It doesn’t get points for having an identity worth pursuing, worth inviting over for dinner, worth talking about. It’s a good movie that fills two hours of your time on Netflix while you’re having dinner. A perfect Tuesday night wine that lacks an artist’s imperfections.

Time in bottle may help it find some nuance. For now, it’s.... a very good Chablis. By comparison, La Forest has a bit more going on, but both 1er Dauvissats aren’t winning any congeniality awards at the moment. But hey, the world needs librarians too.

Try again in 3+ years. Natural cork.

2017 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses

Chardonnay more

10/3/2022 - csimm wrote: 96 points

Allow me to start out a little backwards here in terms of my comments (what else is new?...right?!). I know it's sometimes frowned upon to talk about pricing and QPR and folks just wanna know if the wine is good or not. So, the answer there is, "Yes, it's good." If that's all ya need, then you can skip the rest of this. Now then, what is often confusing with Grand Cru Dauvissat (and even more so with Raveneau) is that trying to get a bead on pricing is such a moving target. Will the Preuses (the "bargain" of the Dauvissat Grand Crus) be $250 today? $300? $400? How about Clos? $1,500? $3,000? $4,000?? I mean, come on now. At some point it just gets silly. For $4K I could nab a lie-flat business class seat, fly to Chablis, and order a bottle at Hostellerie des Clos. I mean, I know "worth" is subjective and my own hypocricy reminds me every day that I have spent more than my share of mortgage-type payments on bottles of wine, but still.... Anyway, I just think there are certain wines (at least for the masses who have a decent wine-spend but it still doesn't rain money Kardashian-style) where cost always comes into the conversation. For Chablis, it's these two monkeys. For Napa, it's Harlan and Screaming Eagle. For BDX, it's Petrus, Lafleur, Le Pin, and a half dozen other big leaguers. For red Burgundy, it's those three little letters everyone loves: D-R-C.

Ok..... moving on... The 2017 Preuses is a flat-out gorgeous wine, no denying, with a seamlessness (almost creaminess - but not creamy necessarily) that caresses the palate with a beautiful introduction of flavor. Lemon confit, quince, lemon verbena, yellow pear skin, travertine. Like silk on the front end, with a perfect whip of acidity on the tail to keep the pulse and frame in perfect cadence with the unfolding of the core fruit. It's not an especially intense performance, with a more medium-bodied expression, though worry not friends, medium doesn't mean boring or aloof by any means here.

A little extra flair might have catapulted this up even further for me; that might be more a stylistic preference than anything else. If you're looking for zippy and popping acidity and oyster-shucking slap-you-silly salinity, then this may not be the wine for you. Give Hubert Lamy a call. I'm sure he can help you in that department. Otherwise, this is a delightfully appealing specimen. Quality is the word that comes to mind. You can taste Dauvissat in their attempts to simply make the best Chablis out there. They're not far off.

Drink or hold. Sealed with natural cork - they lose a point from me just cuz of that. :)

A juicy delivery with ripe and saturated red raspberry and cherry notes, with a dusting of earth and meaty flavors. A bit of heat on the back end but with a savory helping of fruit to fully encircle the palate. The succulent fruit here is compelling, with a decent amount of captivating heft behind it, even if the focus is a slight miss in the precision department. A bit blocky with the tannins darting in and out of the delivery, but a wine that’s hard to be mad at. Enjoyable for sure. Don’t overthink it, but for those looking for a more delicate profile, best look elsewhere. If you’re not scared of a little booyah in your beverage, you won’t be displeased with this little party pleaser. This is a Drouhin made for watching Monday night football, not curling… or darts…

Update: Over the course of about four hours, this really shed its wood and alcohol elements that were otherwise potentially distracting from its proper execution. It became a more profound and deeper wine. Much better on final sips than the first few hours upon opening.

Pnp and drank over two days. Tried hard to get something out of this wine but ultimately it is just disappointing to me. Quite nondescript. Seems almost cooked flavorwise, yet thin and dilute. I would struggle to identify this as Beaujolais if tasting blind, makes me think more of something like a cheap Syrah. OK it’s a cheap Beaujolais cru, but still…

I brought this to Etta's for dinner with Suzi (mini-crabcakes followed by the spice-rubbed salmon & cornbread pudding). On opening it was dark, brooding and tannic unlike almost any Pinot I have ever tasted. A bit of barnyard seems evident. At first it showed loads of tannin and acid, but the fruit was hiding. With time in the glass (NOTE: Etta's has *really* crappy restaurant glasses. Will Tom Douglas restaurants drive me to BYO glasses?) it starts to open up and expand, lengthening on the palate. Finally by the time the salmon entrees arrived we were dealing with pure MAGIC! The acid gets along SOOOO well with the fat of the salmon, the finish showing power and grace. Deep cherry, powerful and intense on the palate yet very smooth.

One troubing sign is that the finish seemed to tighten up by the end of the meal, but I also think that had to do with a clash with the sweet creme brulee dessert. Gorgeous bottle!

Nose is bit shy initially but opens up 1/2 hr later. Floral with sweet tone. Notes of violet, spice, vanilla oak and good mixed of of black and red fruits with a touch of wood. Sweet and smooth on entry. Fairly open and accessible now. Good acidity level, probably higher than 09' but lower than 10'. 13.5% alcohol with ever so slight warmth at finish. Very Good balance and length. Pretty and delicious wine, easy to like, could have consumed the whole bottle. First experience with 11' red Burgundy. If 11' red Burgs are better version of 07', then these wines are going to be delicious early. Maintains good balance on 3rd day, good aging potential, impressive! Buy more? 2018 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Chatelots

Pinot Noir more

7/14/2021 - csimm wrote: 94 points

A Chambolle that delivers both acidic energy and a dark, somewhat brooding, depth (eventually). This particular bottle was followed over the course of a few weeks with a Coravin. The first hits of the fresh bottle were extremely tight and torqued-up, with the tannic structure and quivering acidity putting pressure on the fruit, which was desperately trying to surface. In the glass with some air, the balled-up core began to open up slightly with black cherry and bark notes. However, the back end never fully stretched itself out, becoming clipped and constrained on the stubborn finish.

Over the course of over two weeks, I sampled this a few times before finally popping the cork. With a small amount of swirling in a large Zalto Burgundy glass, this blossomed into a deeply pitched and complex profile of black and red raspberry, black cherry, bark, underbrush, purple plum, pine needles, spice, Baker's chocolate, and cassis. This 2018 was similar to the 2017 version, but with a bit more heft (and maybe even a touch of hedonism here). Finishes full and smooth but light on its feet with beautiful freshness.

Perhaps a bit less comparative raw intensity overall than the 2018 Sentiers VV, with this Chatelots adding a little more of a teddy bear love hug on the tail than the Sentiers.

If you're looking for a cranberry water and citrus rind experience, it won't be here. The contour of these Sigaut Chambolles veer more toward darker succulence and sappiness. 94+ points. Hold for a few years.

2017 Faiveley Corton-Clos des Cortons Faiveley

Corton Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

12/9/2022 - Mag357 wrote: NR

Reddish pale ,woody aromas and a hint of graphite reduction, black ripe cherry scents and soil, these aromas extend in the mouth. The toast is quite prominent at that stage, the coffee and burnt flavors tend to mask the fruit, the barrel lending its sweetness. There is however good sappy silkiness, tannins are soft but present, decent concentration of flavors but slightly short for grand cru, ending in a chalky, persistent and fresh finish. This is a soft vintage, and the extraction is well judged with soft tannins, so this could be drunk quite young.
If you like oaky Burgundy, then go for it. However for my taste it is just too oaky for that soft vintage, and the oak masks the fruit. It is a pity because the wine has qualities, so let's see if Erwan Faiveley will make in the future some changes in the barrel program and make purer expressions of Corton.

2013 Domaine Darviot-Perrin Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières

2/26/2023 - csimm wrote: 100 points

I've written a decent amount on this wine already, but every time I pop the cork, 1.) I regret it, because I know Darviot-Perrin's Perrieres is near-impossible to find in the states, especially this amazing 2013, and I know my stash has forever dwindled minus-one more bottle, and 2.) I am utterly amazed by the freshness (thanks DIAM 10!) and purity of fruit; for my palate, this is top-top-shelf Meursault and would easily be considered a Grand Cru - if Meursault carried such a classification.

The neon green-yellow hue alone lets you know this is a special wine. Lemon-lime Squirt (love it!), yellow pear, lemon verbena, kiwi, fresh Meyer lemon juice, and wet limestone. Perfect tension. Perfect energy. Perfect purity. A perfect bottle showing [you guessed it] 'perfectly' on this day at this time for this guy right here.

Another taster compared this to Roulot. Well, seeing as how this Darviot-Perrin didn't cost me anywhere close to the Roulot Perrieres' current asking of $1,500-$2,500 per bottle (Jiminy Christmas!), I would consider that a compliment for the Darviot-Perrin. I'm not saying the D-P can be had for pocket change, but I didn't get any nuclear fraud alerts from my credit card when I grabbed a few bottles either.

I have never given 100 points to a white Burgundy, and I'm not exactly sure why except that perhaps the Burghounds of the world have programmed me into thinking that there is no such thing as a white Burg beyond the usual 92-94 point scale ("...here too the moderate presence of wood is worth mentioning..." - if you read Allen Meadows at all, you know what I'm talking about).

So, let's go with 100 here. Hopefully the angelic Illuminati doctrines of the holy Burgundian orthodoxy will survive knowing that some dumb Yankee decided to anoint a Meursault the divine hundred points instead of reserving that sacred right to the Holy Trinity of Montrachets (or rather, Holy Quint of Montrachets?). Feel free to hit me up directly with any "glory to judge" statements you may have, that is, for the 7 people who actually happen to stumble across this tasting note or have even heard of this wine.

Don't buy this. It's not an excellent Gevrey at a surprising price point. There may be some red fruit wrapped in floral notes. The palate definitely doesn't have dark fruit on a backbone of acidity with a lingering finish. Save your money and buy some NSG or something from Chile.

Maybe I do not understand burgundy yet, I thought I was getting the hang of it... Its a stretch to give it an 89 .. I do not see this getting better. I do understand that tertiary flavours do evolve but I do not see this changing chemical compostion and becoming that. My reference point for tertiary flavours is a 1996 De Vogue Musginy VV when it had about 8 years on it. It was sublime. I have 6 more of these with which to experiment. Fingers crossed.I guess its is the in same category as someone giving at $12 burgundy a 100 point rating. It still makes it into CT scoring.

Well now, this is a big boy athlete with MC Hammer pants and tribal tattoos strutting chest-out with significant look-at-me bicep flex and drive, pumping out yellow citrus, pear brandy (without the overt booze), orange oil, matchstick, and white rock flavors that initially hit you silly on the palate and make you wonder if you got punched by a Pitbull or slathered by a Labrador.

It's quite the ping-ponging of flavors on the initial pour, but throughout a couple hours of consumption, this comes back to center and begins to show a more refined meathead posture. Never clunky or rude, but certainly assured and bold, this version of Mouchère is a powerful pony compared to the 2017 and 2018. True enough, the latest renditions of Mouchère have never been shy guys, so many of you holding bottles know this already, but the 2019 is a tick up in everything from frame and bones to succulence and concentration. The drive is stylistically pronounced and dynamic, but it still holds its focus and finds glide and beauty once it devours a few hours of O2.

It's not an angry nor waspy execution by any means. It's just an Amazonian Maria Sharapova with a forehand topspin that may leave your pecs feeling a bit gassed out by the end of it if you're not adequately trained-up before your first sip. Be sure to properly stretch before taking on this mancow shock jock.

Somewhat surprisingly, this pairs great with food - Asian-fusion type fare is a solid marriage. Even still, best to let this gym junkie cycle off the horse juice for a few years before introducing it to mom and dad. Try again in 2026+.

This was recently graded as the best Gamay in the world! So is it? Well firstly a quick comment on 'competition'. In terms of selection they did not have the big 4 of Beaujolais which I find odd, they had little wines from the new world, Oregon and Australia are producing some outstanding Gamay, just check out Evening Land Gamay and you will know what I am talking about. So back to the wine...

Saint-Amour is probably up there is terms of preferred Cru in Beaujolais, Morgon will always be my No.1. The color is darker ruby with dark berry fruits, bubblegum, forest floor and fresh herbs. The palate has good berry concentration, crushed stones, dusty soil, bright acidity yet I feel the balance is a little off around the mid-palate dare I say this is too young? When drinking young wines there is always a sense of balance even in a young Bordeaux, yet I feel this is quite unbalanced, hence I have to assume it will come together in 5 years? The finish is well structured yet falls off a little short. Again I am probably being more critical than normal but I find quite a few technical faults for the world's best Gamay. Still a solid 90, but certainly this falls short of a certain Lapierre. Would I buy this again? Yes Is this the best Gamay in the world? 100000% No
