Trippy label, as the facing label was removed. I guess this is the way they label these, with simply a baby blue necktie label and the standard back label. What isn't standard is how this showed. This wine is well built, with some of the traditional Sancerre flavors, combined with a lean, minerally/dry texture and terrific acid. Excellent white.

Drinks with Friends (Pago): This was a WOW wine. Tannins are still very tight, but I don't even know how to describe it so much was going on. Not a fruit bomb California Cabernet, but people that like that style would be happy... Also would make Bordeaux lovers happy, perfectly in between the 2 styles. Monte Bello, to me, is the greatest American wine and this did not disappoint.

This wine was also proof for me that you can make an amazing California Cab at below 14% Alcohol... This one checks in at 13.6%

If I wasn't so cheap I'd buy a case of this tomorrow...

2012 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard

10/4/2015 - ozziewine wrote: 89 points

I feel like Debbie Downer here ("wah-wah!"). It must just be this bottle given the other high scores. This was thin and kind of simple, with a little heat. I tried it with an air time of 1-4 hours...temps of 50-65 degrees and no descernible differences...and used a Pinot glass.
I have had inconsistent results with Aubert Chardonnay so far: May/14 an '09 Ritchie 88 - June/14 a '10 Lauren 94 - January/15 a '12 Eastside 99 and now this.
Not sure what to make of it all. I'm not saying it was bad, it was just OK. There was some nice oak and vanilla, but no bright fruit. Not a great QPR for this one.
One final, albeit pleasantly surprising (and at the same time disappointing), note. I stood the bottle up overnight to let the sediment settle (as per Aubert's recommendation). I drank 90% of it this way, but left the remainder in the bottle so as not to mix the settled sediment with the wine to be drunk. After finishing the decanted wine, I poured the dregs and voila! Beautiful! Rich, viscous, vanilla. OMG! Makes me wonder what the rest of the wine would have been like had I consumed it with the sediment mixed in. I'll never know as this was my only bottle.
Word to the wise, experiment!

  • Comment posted by wineberg:

10/6/2015 3:52:00 PM - Oddly, that almost sounds like a bottle that froze...I've experimented with freezing bottles, just to see what it does...and generally on whites it's what you've described, its like everything is just absent from the wine, and its totally hollow, but there's lots of sediment once it unfreezes (but its definitely not just sediment at that point, it's like precipitate of all the flavors, tannins, etc), and the last glass from the bottom of the bottle, with all the stuff that precipitated out during freezing, is actually decent.

Of course, if a bottle really freezes hard, the cork will be pushed basically all the way out. I'm certainly not saying that's what happened to your bottle, your note just struck me as oddly similar as to how I've described a frozen and thawed wine in the past!

There is an odd note of burnt rubber on this that wont go away. Both in the nose and palate which is a shame because the material underneath seems excellent. Judgment reserved.

  • Comment posted by wineberg:

5/7/2015 8:14:00 AM - The '11s are pretty reductive still. Give it a few more years to get more O2 through the cork and those smells should hopefully resolve. Try the '10 and '12 if you can find them, they're both drinking well right now. Love these wines.

This is sleek, sexy and luxurious. It feels like silk on the tongue. The nose was a little reserved at first but opened after a decant. There is a slight funk mixed with cherry, darker fruits and dried herbs. On the palate I get cherry followed by blueberry and herbs with that classic Walla Walla Rocks funk but more subdued than Cayuse. The finish is long and smooth.

fwiw-I don't the oak isn't overly noticeable. I think the previous poster was mistaking barnyard funk for oak or we had completely different bottles of this wine.

I read with alarm the other reviews of this wine, so I opened one up. After two hours of sipping, My conclusion is this is still very young and needs more time. The earlier reviewer's "spaghetti sauce" reference is incredibly off-base and unsubstantiated, in my opinion. Be patient with this, after all, it is a 2010 vintage. Give it some time.

If you can't drink Old Sparky on your birthday (60th), when can you drink it? Cab and pizza at Di Fara's in Brooklyn never tasted so good. Think soup and sandwich, Mutt and Jeff, Abbott and Costello. The perfect pairing. This was a full bodied wine. Long legs. A beautiful dark, rich color. No other notes, as I was busy eating pizza, and sharing this once-in-a-lifetime wine with friends and family.

Very smooth and creamy but super oaked! You cannot taste anything out of this wine other than biting oak. Very low bar for the price.

  • Comment posted by wineberg:

4/12/2013 5:47:00 AM - You sure it's oak and not something else? As caeleric said, this wine saw no new oak...from the Keplinger site "After a 4-day cold soak and 17 days on skins, the wine was drained and gently pressed to two once-used Demi Muids and a neutral 320L barrel – both French oak. After 18 months in barrel, it was bottled without fining or filtration."

I find the Keplingers need lots of air time when they're really young, as the 10s are now. Just drank a bottle of 09 Red Slope that didn't open up at all until the 2nd day.

I had this by the glass at a local restaurant. I don't drink a lot of Cab Franc and this was a revelation for me. Sweet dark fruit with a firm underlying structure. There is a hint of minerality and tobacco leaf that adds interest with a medium finish. Thoroughly enjoyable now, but with great upside for the future. I just bought a case.

"Judgment" of DC (aka dinner #3 with Pinkmoon) (Poste Modern Brasserie): Decanted and drank over 4 hours.

Now I have to go get some of this to put in the cellar....I thought this was great. Dark cherry, hint of strawberries maybe, meat, spices, excellent balance.

We had this next to an 09 Saxum James Berry, and while the Saxum was definitely more fruit forward, the similarities between the two were striking.

Drinking well now with some air, but will keep for a while too.

Possibly the best wine I've had the pleasure of tasting in my limited experiences. Tasted at SQN tasting along with 7 other SQN wines from 2003-2009. This was the winner, both for me personally and as voted by the group.

Harmonious balance. Deep, haunting flavors. Graphite. Licorice. 5 spice. Savor every drop.

I would have no hesitation opening this bottle in the near future. While I'm sure it has plenty left, it is a stunner right now.

Wine Night 1/18/13: Posted this in the CT forums, so will just use for my TN here :)

I like this bottle of '97 better than the one I had at Thanksgiving...this one seems more full and rich, and I get really nicely developed fruit, green apple, apricot, mango, and I swear a hint of chamomile mint tea, with the petrol in a supporting role...I remember the previous bottle as petrol dominant.

I did jump this up a couple points, this bottle was better.

  • Comment posted by wineberg:

1/18/2013 8:17:00 PM - Yeah it was definitely better...All four of us who tasted it tonight had some of that same bottle at Thanksgiving, and we all thought this bottle was a step up from that last one. I also saw your comment on the depressed cork in your first TN on this; I had the same thing on several of my bottles too, and I've been drinking them in order of most depressed cork to least depressed...maybe the last bottle out of my 6, that looks perfect, will blow my mind :)

  • Comment posted by wineberg:

1/18/2013 8:46:00 PM - I'm positive mine were depressed when I got them, as I remember pulling them out of the shipper and being annoyed at a couple of the corks. The most depressed one was the bottle from Thanksgiving...my remaining 4 look to be in great shape though. Interestingly, the cork from the bottle tonight was completely saturated, and had soaked up enough wine that it was heavy enough for me to make a comment on and pass around...don't recall ever having a cork like that...
