Am trying hard to love Riesling GG and keep exploring different producers and vintages but I merely like it. Whether its this Kuehn, the expensive Keller, Wittmann, von Winning Forster etc in Germany, or a FX Pichler and Hirtzberger in Wachau/Austria, all those wines are for me firmly planted in the lower 90s score range. The only truly remarkable bottle of dry Riesling I have had was a bottle of Hermannshoehle from Doenhoff with remarkable minerality some time ago but then I had other bottles that were merely nice. The sweeter Kabinetts or even the Spaetlese/Auslese are great of course but I struggle to drink more than a glass or two given the sweetness.
This Kuehn has a fairly evolved light golden color, looks like at least 10-15 years old based on color alone. The usual faint petrol nose, on the palate loads of citrus and acidity, much fresher than the recently tasted 2014 vintage of the same wine but otherwise fairly simple and foursquare in my eyes, good length as the acidity and citrus linger for quite some time on your tongue.
Overall good fresh white but for me miles away in terms of complexity and minerality from a top Chardonnay from Burgundy or Downunder (Kumeu, Heytesbury etc). But that is just my personal view. Rating at a rather generous 92 points here, would take a humble St. Aubin 1er Cru from PYCM anytime over this wine and any of those GG peers.

Disappointing.

Not without assets, but it has a sharp, lemon-like acidity which upends the balance and the whole affair is just too unrefined, too simple, too ordinary and undemanding to be fun on any other than the most basic level.

Even in Rheingau-terms (which is expensive), this is 12-14 EUR level at best, and even that price would not be justified by the quality one gets here.

Actually there are 10-EUR-base wines that are better than this.

In fact it costs 24 EUR, which is some of the worst qpr I've had for quite some time (and hence the 'I don't like it' desigation).

Of course it is young and who knows where it will be in a few years. But as of today, this quality for this price is a cheat and makes me wonder how much money I want to spend on PJ Kühn wines in the near future.

Recent purchase. Pnp. Pale golden yellow in the glass. Pretty petrol nose followed by more petrol on the attack. White fruit, very good balance, a touch of sweetness on the finish with some candied lemon and orange. Great Riesling given the challenging 2014 vintage!

Golden yellow. Deep nose of yellow stone fruit with slight exoticism in the heart note. The top note shows a beautiful freshness, reminiscent of lightly candied citrus fruits, physalis and ripe oranges in cream. The fine spiciness completes the picture on the nose. Not a lightweight, but rather a rather sturdy and powerful Riesling with medium+ body and delicate hints of honey; ripe yellow stone fruit and young mango. At first it sounds a bit heavy and voluminous, but the good acidity and slight phenolic buffer this well and bring the wine into balance. Quite juicy on the palate, with a slight grip in the background. With 13% alcohol animating, nice length.

Restaurant purchase. Peter Jakob Kühn makes some really idiosyncratic Rieslings. This spent two years in a large wooden vat on the lees and allowed to go through malolactic completely.

The result is a dense, rich, and concentrated wine. Filled with peach and tropical fruit characters (pineapple and mango). On the palate while that concentration comes through, the structure still feels a bit rounded. There's a distinctive creaminess to it from extended lees contact and malo with a round and softer acid edge. Some petrol-filled smoky and salty finish. It felt like it was missing something, je se ne quoi.

Took the remaining 1/3 of the bottle back home and consumed the rest about an hour later from a Grasl Cru. The fruit appeared to recede a bit on the nose to make way for a captivating mix of sweet and delicate white aromatic flowers: mock orange, aztec pearl, osmanthus burkwoodii, but on the palate it felt much the same as before.

Aromatically, it's lovely, especially from the Grassl (what a difference the stem made), but on the palate it seems to fall short for my tastes. Clearly well made and with intention. There's concentration, complexity, depth, but I think the combination of richness from the lees and wooden vat and the rounder, softer acid feel from the malolactic makes this feel like a wine that speaks more to winemaking than a sense of place. AP 08 16

ABV: 13.0%
Closure: natural cork
Decant: 90min at restaurant // 3h in when tasted at home
Stem: non-descript white wine glass; later Grassl Cru
Assemblage: two years on lees in a large wooden vat, full malo.

10 years after Riesling tasting - 2011 (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Glass: Sophienwald Universal
Bottle double decanted about 7h before the tasting. Bought at release, perfectly stored.
Clear, deep golden color. Oxidative, musty notes, lots of mellow apple. Not flawed, but quite deep and complex.
On the palate rose hip, mellow apple, zests. Very deep and mineral. Quite expressive and long. Certainly on its peak now. Not much potential, so drink now. 92-93
