Nick's 64 Goodge Street (Mainly) Burg Dinner (64 Goodge St): Oxidative nose, complex, salty, ripe apple, some autumn leaves. Complex. Medium bodied, dry/medium-medium, some barley sugar notes, fine boned, articulate, burnt apple notes, fresh acidity lifts the wine nicely into a decent length finish. Interesting wine.

Nick's Burgundy evening at 64 Goodge Street: A pale golden orange. A mushroom and sherry nose, but it is the caramelised burnt sugar element that is simply unmistakable here. This is on the oxidative side now, but it is the purity and leisurely and light sweetness that makes this wine. There is no cloy at all, it is remarkably fresh for close to 50 years old.

Poured clear. Grapefruit, ginger and lychee on the nose. Simpler palate than other Moulin Touchais vintages I've had, but still a satisfying sweet apple and slightly spicy character, finishing mid-sweet.

Supremely fragrant and inviting, this evolved considerably since my last note, but was no less vibrant or energetic. Candied citrus peel and apple jelly with some wonderful camphorous aromas - almost coastal, like sagebrush or cypress. Spices aplenty, everything was beautifull knit together with a real ping of acid freshness on the very long finish. Stunning with foie gras, we were astounded when we realise a small amount was left in the bottle two days later and was nearly as vibrant and layered as when first opened.

Quickie at B&B PP. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, amber gold colour. Legs. Nose medium+ intensity, with aromas of baked golden apples, oxidative Sherry, orange peels. Developed. On the palate, medium sweet, medium alcohol (13%), medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet honey, baked golden apples, orange peel, toasted toffee nut, slight salty stones minerality. Medium+ finish. Very good quality. So old yet only slightly oxidative. Great longevity. Probably as good as it gets already. Not a lot of layered depth of complexity, but really pleasurable. Maybe just a hint of botrytis here.

Raisins, dried apricots and our 1730 family Bible on the nose. Medium + acidity, the more tart than 1979 and 2005. Tea, bitter orange marmalade, After Eight, slightly oxydiced apple. A delicious and very complex dessert wine.
After two days it deceloped more in a dried apricot direction both on the nose and on the palate. Less tea and family Bible. Still very good.

Coppery orange verging on ochre, but not quite brown in color. On the nose, orange rind, honey, thyme, spices, and oxidative caramel notes. "You know what, this thing smells a bit like white vermouth," I commented, and people at the table nodded in agreement. Surprisingly fresh on the palate given the age of this wine, and with the ample minerals and acidity effortlessly glides into a lip-smacking finish. This lady has got moves.

Very dirty, moldy and musty when first opened, with a dark golden color. I first feared this might be corked or otherwise damaged. With air this cleaned up. On day two it dramatically cleaned up on the palate, although a bit of a musty note remained on the nose. Lots of honey, dried peaches, spice and wool. The sweetness is subdued, but still quite noticeable, with the acidity level providing adequate, yet not riveting, balance. Good and interesting wine, yet not very exciting.

Start-up Business Lunch (Restaurante Cuenllas - Madrid): Old golden colour. Nose is simply delicious but lacks some depth. Perhaps I am very simple too and want more and more. More even the bottle aromatically can offer. On the other hand, palate is majestic, unctuous, very long. Perfectly balanced between sweetness and acidity. Delicate. Great bottle to be remembered. Aged to perfection. We perfectly know what we want. Superb. Devoted to that green of the bottle. Matching a meringue lemon pie.
Color a oro viejo. Delicado. Gran botella para recordar. Envejecida a la perfección. Sabemos perfectamente lo que queremos. Superior. Acompañó una tarta de limón y merengue.
Beautiful nose of orange peel, honey, and potpourri. Incredibly youthful and vivacious on the palate, with fresh orange and caramel flavors and an almost-juicy finish. While it lacks a good bit in richness or weight, it compensates well with good precision and freshness. Were it not for that amber color, I would scarcely have believe this was forty years old. Lovely.

Age may have let the sugar fade, but there is so much flavour here you wouldn't guess it's nearly 40 years old. Creamy, peachy, honeyed nose, with hints of beeswax, lanolin, varnish, and hazelnuts. Almost Cointreau like at times, with wonderful honeycomb and yellow fruits on the palate, but with some vegetal and nutty background notes. Not in the least bit cloying, viscous palate with plenty of acidity, and some nice minerality makes this cleansing as well as sweet. Screams for some foie gras, ham hock terrine, or a nice washed rind cheese. Yum.

Popped and poured. Deep amber gold in the glass. On the nose, dried strawberry, marmalade, candied lemon, baked apple, crushed rock, honey, baking spice and burnt sugar. On the palate, this is quite round and rich, but sufficient countering acidity. This really lingers on the finish, with tastes of strawberry preserves, citrus zest, baked apple, honey, burnt sugar, mineral and spice. This was a real treat. I quite enjoyed this.

Year 2 - Super Tasting 5 of 5 - Greg does Loire (Greg's House - Kitchener, ON): Nose of strawberry candy, burnt caramel, lemon, brûlée, preserved strawberry, lemon and minerals, The palate is so lush but is balanced with cleansing acidity and makes this not seem fat or overdone at all. Year 2 - Super Tasting 5 of 5 - Greg does the Loire (Greg's House): This wine pours a deep, rich shade of copper. The nose is of burnt caramel, raspberry/strawberry candy, honey, burnt orange, raspberry bush, candied lemon peel, salted toffee, mineral and hints of maple syrup. Very complex. The palate is so fresh and light with only moderate viscosity and elevated acid. The sugar has certainly receded as this has aged. The finish lingers with excellent acid. A wonderful intellectually pleasing wine.

Ha, this was older than anyone at the table except for me! Golden. Tropical fruit aromatics without real honeyed character. Medium to full bodied, moderately sweet. Fresh but not exceptionally complex, barleycorn flavors, reasonably well balanced without any finishing bitterness. Not quite as good as the last bottle several years ago.

Amber color. Complex aromas of candied orange, apricot, white flowers and sugar crystals. Add to this burnt caramel on the palate. Only a touch of sweetness on the palate, much less than we expected. Dim Sum Club celebrates CNY with Teochew Lo Hei (Cheng Hu Tien, Keong Saik Road, Singapore): Wow, this was really nice - a wine that snuck up on you with just how good it actually was. It was just so understated and easy to drink that it was easy to miss its more rarified qualities. The nose seemed a bit simple at first, with a sweet, very honeyed character. However, with a bit of air and after warming up a little in our glasses, it slowly unfurled with super-complex notes of musk and mineral, kumquats and sweet plum sauce, with a nice earthiness trailing behind - a beautiful, subtly nuanced bouquet. The palate was sweet as well, but not cloying in any way. In fact, it came across more fresh than sweet, with lovely acidity winding its way through yummily layered flavours of malt honey and spiced apples, kumquats, some peach melba, and then earth and mineral notes pulling into a long graceful finish. This was so well-integrated and balanced that our glasses emptied almost too quickly, because the wine only truly came alive when the food arrived, especially when it was paired with deep-fried Toechew liver-rolls wrapped in beancurd skin. Drank with the meaty rolls dipped in a sweet plum sauce, the wine blossomed in an incredible way, taking on a deliciousness moreishness that echoed the food wonderfully. Excellent stuff. It may not have the depth and oomph of the great sweet Loire wines, but it was memorable in a quiet, reflective way.

*From memory* Dark brownish yellow. Fresh apricot, orange zest, lemon sugar, and dried ginger on caramel and oxidative undertone. The sweetness takes the backstage while acidity and mineral are carrying the length on the palate. Well balanced, slick, and smooth line. Medium plus finish. Despite the well-integrated fruits and signs of some oxidation, it retained some youthfulness still.

Moulin Touchais from '53 to '98 (DUÅ (Umeå, Sweden)): Darkening straw yellow. A rich nose with pure apple sauce, petrochemistry and yellow fruits. Very appealing. The palate is unexpectedly thin-bodied, but the wine is nevertheless a superbly balanced, multi layered and interesting wine. Rich notes of everything that should be there. Depth, breadth but no oomph. Possibly the best for contemplative sipping.
-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over 5.5 hours --
NOSE: noticeably “younger” and fruitier than the ’71; interesting note of cinnamon; Christmas candle --- pine, cinnamon, and nutmeg; honey; hint of bloomy rind cheese after 3.5 hours; very nice --- I prefer the Nose on this ’75 over the Nose on the ’71.
BODY: deep, golden orange color (amber); full bodied
TASTE: gently sweet; not as oxidized as the ’71; golden raisins; less acidity than the ’71; dried apricot on the finish; obviously fresher than the ’71, but I think I may prefer the ’71 for its acidity; pleasant spiciness here --- some kind of orange-fruited sorbet note that’s really quite nice – persimmon or apricot; 13% abv not noticeable; acidity is adequate, if not a bit low; I’m not sure I see this getting any better, so I’d Drink Now; perhaps deserves a higher score for being in such great shape at this age.

Moulin Touchais 1959-1985 (AuZone, Stockholm): Appearance: golden yellow Nose: dried fruit with a hint of red berries, spice, some honey, slightly nutty and with some oxidation notes (a bit more than the 1981). Pleasant nose. Palate: more than medium bodied, noticably spicy, good concentration, baked apples, rather good acidity that comes across as higher in the aftertaste. Approximately between 1981 and 1979 in style, when comparing to other wines of the same tasting.

A lot of ripe tropical fruits like pineapple and peach. Also a lot of butter and subtle acidity. This is an excellent wine! And for me this is the proof that this wine needs a lot of time to show its merits. The bottle I drank in 1988 was apparently much too young.

Year 2 - Super Tasting 5 of 5 - Greg does Loire (Greg's House - Kitchener, ON): Nose of strawberry candy, burnt caramel, lemon, brûlée, preserved strawberry, lemon and minerals,
The palate is so lush but is balanced with cleansing acidity and makes this not seem fat or overdone at all. Flavours of salted caramel, brûlée, strawberry candy, honey, minerals, orange marmalade and preserved red fruit.
The finish is long and complex. This was quite a treat and in a great place.

Most of the sugar is not there anymore. Colour is not as dark as expected. I suspect a lot of sulfur back in 1976. So it's the right time to drink it ! Sec-tendre balance. tasty !

Orange peel, caramel, candied lemon and mandarin. Lovely structure through the fresh acidity, the sweetness is still nicely punchy and there is good length to it. Delicious.

Amber color. Complex aromas of candied orange, apricot, white flowers and sugar crystals. Add to this burnt caramel on the palate. Only a touch of sweetness on the palate, much less than we expected. Nice acidity and great persistence. I would have traded away most of the grand cru Burgundies of the evening for this wine!

Dark brownish yellow.

When first poured intense green apple nose which most disappeared in a few minutes. Not too sweet, good balance of sweetness and acidity but rather boring, all in all.

Just sheer relaxation in a glass. Not very sweet, but the gentle oxidation that comes with nearly 40 years of age and the balance of the wine are just unforgettable... Delicious

Christmas Eve Dinner Featuring Champagne (Home): Burnished gold. Honeyed peach. Obviously more botrytis than the '85. Moderate residual sugar but not at all sugary, a bit liquoureux in texture, surprisingly youthful, excellent length. We all really enjoyed this.

Moulin Touchais 1959-1985 (AuZone, Stockholm): Appearance: golden yellow
Nose: dried fruit with a hint of red berries, spice, some honey, slightly nutty and with some oxidation notes (a bit more than the 1981).

No specific notes, except that I was not as impressed as on previous occasions with older vintages. Less full bodied and less complex, but still a good wine though.
