  • I was looking for something rich, dense and satisfying to drink on a cold, snowy winter night. This one certainly fit the bill and delivered the goods.
Decanted for 2 1/2 hours prior to evaluation
Extremely dark purple color; blackberry nose
Incredibly concentrated fruit notes of plum and currant qlong with grape hard candy. Secondary notes of tobacco and roast meat. Tannins are present but unobtrusive. Plush mouthfeel with a healthy dose of mouthwatering acidity that cuts through the dense primary flavors while refreshing the palate. Outstanding effort!

  • 3 hour decant.
Rich, deep, and delicious. The fruit is still fresh and deeply present.

  • At first seemed monolithic, dark sweet fruit without much depth - almost artificial in flavor, reminded me of grape bubble gum, which was puzzling to find in this 19 year old wine; however, with a few hours in the decanter, the nose brought tertiary aromas to the party, and the flavor profile also gained some depth, although the fruit did retain a pruny quality to it. Hard to gauge which way this is going. Maybe my bottles have been cooked or they're not ready. Certainly don't seem oxidized but don't seem young and fresh either - very little in the way of tannic structure, although acid seems to be holding up well. Based on what I'm reading from other CTers, either aged petit sirah doesn't jive with me, or my bottles are off.

I'm gonna go with a longer decant on the next bottle. Give it at least a couple hours.

  • Big fruit, dark purple, hints of licorice and coffee, savory and sweet, incredibly concentrated, but somehow fresh and no feeling of being over done. Reminded me of a hypothetical blend of a paso Robles Syrah and an Aussie Shiraz. Bravo!

  • First Unmasked Dinner with Steve & Lucie (Our Place): Decanted for 2 1/2 hours, with lots of sediment. The color was an opaque purple. The nose yielded a bowl of dark red, blue and black fruits. The medium plus bodied palate showed this same bowl of dark red, blue and black fruits, along with some earth notes. The acidity was juicy, but balancing, given all the fruit.
Another wonderful bottle of Turley Petite Syrah, smack dab in the middle of its drink window (=15 to 20 years after vintage), but you must decant!

  • Inky purple with no browning. Red jalapeno, fruit compote and a bit of heat on the nose. Brambly with medium acid makes this a mouth waterer. Long finish with a bit of drying dusty tannin remaining. At its best I've had, though no signs this is past prime either. Evidently I've been drinking these too early.

  • Stunningly good. Massive fruit. softened, silky tannins. Plenty of alcohol, but no heat. Impressive, aged Petite Sirah

  • Purity of dark fruit and vanilla oak notes on the nose. Salaciously juicy blackberries and well balanced fruit. Unbelievable that this is 17 yrs old...seems to have a future of another 5+ yrs. looking forward to the 2 more bottles I have in my cellae

  • As every Turley Petite Sirah, this bottle shines with its ultra pure and intense black cassis and blackberry fruit - quite singular in its style and the clear highlight here. Thanks to almost 20 years of age, this is has a beautiful balance and other aromas are shining through. Still, it‘s not the most complex wine but I guess younger, these wines might be too tannic and highly monolithic. I would love to drink one or the other bottle of Turley Petit Sirah every year but these wines are impossible to find here in Europe.

TN: Dark forest berries with lots of blackberries and cassis, leather and herbs on the nose. Highly intense and very intriguing precision. More layered and giving on the palate with the same intense fruit but more blueberries, herbs, first tertiary aromas, minty notes and hints of earth shining through. A wall of very fine tannins, perfectly integrated acidity, very good harmony.

Decanting: Not decanted and followed over a few hours. Improved with air (showed more nuances). A few hours in the decanter will do good things.

  • Extremely dark soul, very unique. Dark blackberry, some herbs, but distinctly different from a cab. Nice tertiary aromas. Leather, olives. It's a big wine, deep and long. I liked the 2008 better when I had it in 2018, because it was such a unique experience at Zion National Park. But this is also great.

  • Green streak on the nose, but still showed a lot of fruit, with characteristic tobacco and leather. No need to wait, but still very enjoyable.

  • Decanted 3+. Very little aromatically. Soft mid-palate with some sour cherry and white pepper notes. Smooth although short finish. This bottle seemed it may have peaked some time ago

  • Deep garnet color with a bouquet and flavor of cassis and blackberries with soft tannins and nice acidity. Good balance and depth with quite a long finish. Big wine that is quite unapproachable when young. Very enjoyable.

  • Time had smoothed out this wine and it was quite enjoyable with a hearty meal. I find PS unidimensional, but this bottle verged on a complex note.

  • Cold night, so I wanted a rich wine. This had been standing up for a while, and as the temperature was plummeting, it seemed like the right time. The wine was surprising in a number of good ways. First of all it was not too tannic. The texture was actually quite mature and integrated. The fruit was still vibrant, echoing crushed berries, with some bramble and leather notes. No apparent alcohol, and only a little bit of lifted acidity in the mid-palate. It really just added an extra bit of energy to the wine. I was very glad I opened it, as the wine showed wonderfully.

  • Coffee, chocolate, and... honey. A wonderful wine with a soft mouthfeel, drinking great right now. I am sure it has years of life left in it, but if you like a little fruit with your aged wine, this is right in the sweet spot.

  • I should have listened to some of the other reviews more closely. We decanted about 45 minutes, and it was not enough. There was a hot, off nose at first. With some time in the glass and some swirls, a wonderful blueberry juice, cherry, then some violets. Tannins were soft and and smooth. Starting to get some tertiary aging notes like raisin.
Give it plenty of air, and will drink great now.

  • A very powerful, highly intense, clean nose dominated be sweet black fruit aromas (black- and blueberries) with sweet oak and violets. On the palate more (ripe but not overripe) dark berries, dark cherries, licorice, violets and olives, complemented by a layer of fresh herbs as well as a nice graphite/iron minerality, almost no signs of ageing. Great structural frame with medium(-) acidity, medium+ to high but very fain-grained, smooth, velvety tannins, medium alcohol, a full body, very high aroma intensity, medium+ to high aroma complexity and a balance close to perfection.

This is my second encounter with a Petit Syrah and I love it. Very much so. This wine is definitely a non-starter for old world purists – too dark and concentrated. It’s a wine with an extremely dark soul. Very dense with tons of clean, pure black fruit. But despite all that fruit power, the wine is not monolithic and in no way overpowering. It remained an elegant and quite complex wine despite being still so young with hardly any tertiary aromas. I’m excited to taste this wine again with some more years on the hip. I guess it can climb to even higher levels than the 95 points.

At 15 years this is still a baby and needs a lot of air. The first sips right after opening the bottle were not that pleasant with some excess acidity and a rather muted aromatic expression. Decanted for 7 hours and then consumed over 3 hours. It had its best moments in the last hour with the optimal balance allowing a much broader array of aromas to show. Hence, I would decant my next bottle for at least 10 hours.

  • Decanted for 6-7h and that didn‘t do it any harm. A distinctly dark fruit that drops through to the palate. Intense and fresh and incredibly young for its age (tasted blind and I was 10 years off). The fruit is mostly blackberry but also reminds me of ripe plum. A whole range of herbal (grassy, provencal herbs, lavender), mineral (graphite, pencil, iron) and floral (violets) notes. While the nose shows a surprising complexity, the palate cannot quite match this. The wine has a lot of power, intensity and is balanced overall, but lacks the layered complexity you would hope for in a truly outstanding wine. Clearly a challenge in a blind tasting, but the group overall wasn‘t bad in assembling the components: a bit of syrah, Rhone elegance and Napa power.

  • Grower/Producer Bubbly Event (Todd Frenchie's Place): I opened this at the end of grower/producer bubbly event at Frenchie's place. I was looking for heat in this and I didn't find it. Instead in the aromatic is a 5 spice/clove note, I presume from some residual wood? Lots of dark plum and spicy. This had some richness but it didn't to me come across as over the top. In a pretty good place to drink IMO.

  • Coravin 6/22/17: Deep ruby with no bricking; highly aromatic nose with blueberry, blackberry, slight spice, seems dense with slight heat; palate is full bodied, rich black fruits, blueberry, quite ripe and juicy, significant heat and high alcohol (15.0%) which shows itself most on the midpalate as the fruit recedes, medium to medium-plus acidity, high tannins but integrated and supple; finish is short-medium. This seems very young, still primary without complexity, very ripe, too alcoholic, and overall unbalanced enough that makes it difficult to drink and impossible to pair with food. I'm much more negative than most of the other CT reviews on this wine. 85-
1-2 hours air: This integrates a bit more, and it's easier to drink. It still doesn't develop complexity like the best Petite Sirah that I've had, but it's drinkable. 86-88
6/28/17: Same as when first accessed. Fundamentally a bit unbalanced.

  • Blackberries, blueberries, smoke, earth, raspberries, violets, and a little Vicks vapo rub on the nose. Dark fruit, juicy cherries, licorice, earth, mocha, and spices on the palate. Beautiful juicy acidity, mostly integrated tannins, medium long finish. Delicious. Overall, this seemed a lot younger than it was. It was big and burly, but the acidity was so refreshing and gave the wine so much lift, it was hard to put down. Kept drinking it during dessert (and it went surprisingly well with chocolate eruption cake).

  • Pours inky purple (with lots of sediment, decant is a must). Graphite/iron and some heat on the nose. Black fruit and juicy acidity on the palate. Chewy tannins on the finish. This is BIG and still quite young.

  • Decanted for 3+ hours. I felt this was a "typical" PS - which already says a lot as PS has become my favorite wine. But it didn't stand out compared to the cab and malbec we were also drinking tonight. I wasn't drawn to it the way I have been with other PS's. About the only specific thing I can point out is that the tannins were a bit heavy even after decanting.

  • Friday Night Double Blind Tasting $40+ (Bin 75): Midnight black core with tiny reddish violet rim; fainter nose, draws you in just like the light in the room, dark chocolate, slight jam of dark fruit, tobacco- chewing, dense and brooding, slight menthol, smoke; bigger on the palate, full, dense, sweet dark fruit, prune, sweet initially then the density kicks in, tannins are really reasonable, raspberry, glycerin, good delineation, well aged though still young; called '05 Rattlesnake Ridge Petite Sirah.

  • Absolutely delicious. Complex, multi-dimensional in both taste and aromas. Still very fruity, though tannins are resolved and is in its prime drinking window.

  • Buyer beware when purchasing older wines on an auction site. Especially those that say "Removed from a professional storage facility". Most of the flawed wines I have purchased at auction contained this bottle note.

  • Super smooth. I think it has plateaued but who knows, maybe is just in a dumb phase. It is a bit unidimensional, but an enjoyable wine. I miss the grip, I would have preferred it younger. If you like less tannic wines you will be very impressed at this stage for a PS.

  • Took out of the cellar at a temperature of 56 degrees and popped and poured. Deep yet well balanced wine which is drinking pleasantly well and smooth but is still quite young (Parker says wine will last another 20 years or so, and I believe it and will wait at least another deacde before drinking my last bottle.). Purple to black in hue, but reflective on its face. Long legs which stick to the glass and leave long, powerful, and deep tracks. Gamey and pepperly on the nose with seductive scents of pronounced fruit. Gamey and fruity (black and red fruit alike) in taste with a cognac-y, fruity, tarry aftertaste which lasts a good 3 to 5 minutes. Darks stains left in the glass. Definitely worth the $75 a bottle release price.

P.S. I just saw my write-up from September 2011. Looks like my ratings and descriptions remain the same.

  • A WOW wine
Against the 2007 PS from a month ago, this is an entirely different creature. That was rough & a bit chewy. This is James Bond smooth.

Deep dark delicious. Time has served this well. The window has opened.

  • Yes big. Luscious dark fruit on nose. Blackberry currant fruit in the mouth, then the chocolate and chalk and a smokiness. Tannins and acidity emerge midpalate and are well balanced. Brambles join in mid palate. Very extended finish.

  • The wine is a deep, dark, inky maroon color. The intoxicating nose has blackberries, licorice, black pepper, baking spices, meat juices, dark chocolate, fresh ground dark roast coffee, blueberries, vanilla, wild flowers, and minerals. This has full body, solid, ripe tannins, and very nice acidity. On the palate the wine is rich and velvety with loads of spicy, juicy berries, black pepper, dark chocolate, and minerals. The finish is very long and ever changing, highlighting different elements every second or two. The blackberries, blueberries, dark chocolate, and dark roast coffee stand out the most. This is absolutely delicious today but will hold for several years.

  • THis was a good bottle of wine, but I've had the more recent vintages and I liked them better. They were fuller and had more pencil. This felt like it was at the end of its drinking plateau which surprised me. Maybe it was this bottle. Tobacco and leather on the nose. Lighter in the mouth with blueberry and grit pulling through. Long finish

  • Big and absolutely delicious. Big, dark, and teeth-staining, with dark fruits that do border on the raisiny-side. At the same time, however, this huge wine stands a little light on its feet, purity and a certain smoothness on the palate makes it so drinkable right now. I did not find significant tannins in this bottle - which was a bit shocking. It will obviously drink well for years, but I really see no reason to open one now, especially if you have multiple bottles. Had with pork ribs with a very garlic-based sauce. Initial noticeable alcohol blew off in an hour. Decant.

  • Decanted an hour. Deep, dark, inky maroon color. An outstanding nose of blackberries, pepper, melted licorice, baking spices, dark chocolate, fresh ground espresso, with some vanilla, blueberry, and violets. Full bodied with solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. Rich and spicy on the palate with loads of dark fruit, pepper, and spice. Ripe tannins grab the palate coating it with velvety plushness. Long finish that just seems to go on and on, very slowly fading. One of the best Petite Sirahs I have ever had. This is still quite young but very drinkable now with some air. I'll hold onto my other bottle for a special occasion.

  • Decanted 1 hr. Clear blackish red with a fragrant nose of prunes, roses, chocolate, and leather. Med+ body with flavors of raspberries, prunes, chocolate, and spices framed by some nice cedary notes. This was very clean and pure and showed some unexpected elegance that kept it light on it's feet. A classy and nimble PS if you will. Good structure and acidity, integrated tannins, and a med length finish. Great with prime rib.

  • Not sure what happened. I loved this wine a few years ago, but now all I get is raisins and overripeness (definitely some RS) with massive black licorice on the finish. Clean wine with beautiful color and plenty of body, but not at all my style. My guess is because I drank this wine young the first time around, the tannins masked the RS and portiness of this wine. Drank this up against an '05 Outpost, and it wasn't even close. Now that was an impressive wine.

  • Inky purple with an explosive boysenberry nose and lots of fruit (blueberry, blackberry) to deliver, combined with well integrated oak and plenty of peppery nuance. Big wine, viscous and velvety, but still a baby, with a bit of heat on the long finish.

  • Dark ruby; virtually opaque; glass staining. On the nose this is redolent of plum and spice. On the palate a fruit bomb of blueberry, plum and cranberry, with tannins well in check and a spicy finish. Plush and mouthwatering. Old World fans run the other way. New World fans, relax and enjoy the ride. On the third day, still pretty voluptuous.

  • Unreal, just a beautiful bottle and a really great and beautiful wine. Enjoyed earlier tonight with Kim at Emeril's at the Loews Hotel on Miami's South Beach with dinner of garlic braised short ribs and that combo was almost too much. Dark violet / purple, big and intense but at this point in maturation so well balanced and smooth. Much too expensive to be any kind of a QPR but really highly recommend this wine for lovers of serious petit sirah. Nose initially muted but just explodedwith effervescent oak, dark stone fruit and black pepper with aeration in glass. Primary flavors consisted of oak, dark fruit, mocha, tar and black pepper and development of smoke and cigar box on the aftertaste. Probably the best ps we have had, will definitely be looking for some of this regardless of the price.

  • Had this right after the 2005 Peterson Family Vineyard Switchback Ridge Petite Sirah. It was not a blind tasting. That Switchback had us gushing with it young, but not so innocent, sexiness. The Turley was an adult. A balanced outstanding wine. But, if I had to choose, i would rather have the Switchback again.

  • We met some friends for dinner at the Anvil Club, and they like big reds so I thought this would be something they'd enjoy. This threw quite a bit of mostly fine sediment upon decanting. By the time it was served with our dinner, it had been decanted for 6-7 hours. Inky opaque color with aromas of chocolate, plum, minerals, mint and blackberry. A big wine, firmly tannic, with juicy blue and black fruit flavors, along with a mineral tone and mint/menthol coming in on the finish.

  • Very inky purple color -- beautiful. Complex nose featuring raspberry, vanilla, and cherry. Very tannic upon opening. Huge, huge fruit in this one -- mainly blackberry with some raspberry. Hints of oak and sage, or maybe thyme. Fruit in wine got bigger as wine opened. Wonderful, zesty wine that should be aged to soften the finish.

  • Broke this bottle while organizing my cellar. Saved almost all of the wine. The color is an amazing dark purple that turns almost neon red near the rim. This is opaque and coats the glass (and tonques) with purple. The nose is subued but pleasant with boysenberry, raspberry, and licorice. This wine coats the mouth with flavors of dried cherries, prunes, expresso, and a slight taste of minerals. The wine is balanced and possesses long, lingering finish. Obviously consumed way too young, but exciting and unique. I wouldn't open another one of these for at least 5 years. Hard to rate a wine this unique that is consumed this early, but I would not hesitate to give it a score in the mid-90s.
