Amazing wine. While of course still young, the magic of the red label from the master in ‘07 was in full form tonight wafting a captivating bouquet of Christmas spices, rose pedals, licorice, worn leather and a menthol freshness. A stunning perfume. The palate shows incredible richness and density yet without weight nor heat, and the most luxurious of textures that wraps around the mouth before its multi-minute finish. Wow.

Beautiful Giacosa that shows the perfect mix and elegance and power. Palate is deep and penetrating. It clearly benefits from an hour plus of decanting. It is rounder and fuller the 07 Barbaresco Riserva. 95+

Initial whiff of cork on this which made my heart sink. On the nose, super elegant, Barolo tar, mint, minerals. With a bit of air gorgeous strawberry and cherry notes start to emerge. Then minerals. Eventually, violets. If this is corked it’s the most marginal case I’ve ever experienced. The aromatics are gorgeous. On the palate again, elegance, intensity without breadth, all the elements in balance. Do I detect a cardboard hint (scary face emoji) or is that a nice toasty note?

The '07 Rocche was insanely beautiful, and adds to a small group of great wines I've had in a vintage that I think is aging unevenly. The nose was intensely perfumed with very sweet, hard candy-like dark red to black fruit, sweet spice, tar, licorice, smoke, and exotic floral aromas. The palate was super finessed - concentrated but perfectly smooth with no perception of tannin. I found very sweet dark red fruits, sweet spices, and balsamic, leading into a long finish of dark floral aromas, balsamic spices, and hard candy like red fruit.
Like the few great '07s I've had, the Rocche shows the ripeness of the vintage in a slightly sweeter than normal, slightly exotic profile, while maintaining a high level of freshness.

I was worried this would be too young, but after 2-3 hours of air, this is incredible. Still a bit tight and youthful, but drinking very well regardless. This will continue to improve for many years to come, but I wouldn’t feel bad about opening it today either.

The grand finale for my 40th birthday celebration (Adam's, Logan Square, Chicago IL): Nose: Well hello there. This nose is immensely deep and layered that wafts out of the glass with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, fresh picked red fruits, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice, herb spices, rose petals, menthol, earth notes, and leather. There is still a very primary sense to the nose, but this was pretty open for business after 3 hours of decanting.
Taste: The feel is Full bodied with crisp, high acidity and silky, but youthful, high tannins. The structure is deceptively youthful, but it isn't overpowering. The feel though is like a velvet hammer and deep with red cherries, strawberries, raspberries, sweet pipe tobacco, licorice, herb spices, rose petals, earth notes, and leather.
Overall: So, this is kinda good. Like, insanely good. I expected it to be drinking a little bit on the earlier side with the vintage and it is definitely there. It is extremely primary and dark red fruited right now and it can certainly develop a lot more. That said, it is also at a stage where drinking it definitely provides a hell of a lot of joy.
A dinner with friends in NYC (New York): his was completely shut down initially, basically just thin acid. It needed about two hours to come around, but when it did, it was a revelation: Everything you want from a Barolo: Aroma of roses, violets and cherries. On the palate, cherry, roses, and that tarry finish that is to die for. Tannins still very strong. A complete baby, even more so than the Calon Segur. If I had more I'd hold them a few more years. WOTN.

Outstanding! Candied red fruits, anise, and roses. Lavish flavors and elegance at the same time. Wonderful balance with a hint of suave tannins and an avalanche of tart black cherries on the finish. Terrific. A bit of bricking at the edge. Drink now or hold.

Brought generously by a friend, opened 20 hours in advance. On nose, floral sensation, plum, dark cherries, rose petal, on palate, dried flowers, rosemary, cherries, and quite smooth tannin. I wonder if we opened the wine for too long that it lost a bit of structure and grip I was expecting for.

Cellar Work? (Alpharetta, GA): See through crimson; licorice and sweet candied roses blow from the glass, orange oil, mahogany, cherry and strawberry liqueur, while complex the nose was quite primary in its evolution; the palate showed finesse and delicacy in the phenolics while not seeming to have aged ones like many other 2007s, sweet fruit, great focus; beautiful wine, super young with a long life ahead.

A Study of Falletto di Serralunga (La Pizza Fresca): The ‘07 Le Rocche Riserva was the only wine that didn’t improve over the course of the evening; in fact, it declined. When tasting it initially, I was at a firm 96, but over the course of the evening, that score sank to 93. The nose was dark and seductive with ripe black cherry complemented by sweet spice and florals, then contrasted by savory minerals and animal musk. On the palate, I found a juicy expression, as saturating cherry and earth tones gave way to sweet tannin. However, this is where things went awry, as the length on the palate shortened and its vibrancy seemed to be snuffed out. It finished on dark red fruits and hints of tannins, yet came across as flat and one-dimensional. I know some people will argue that I had a poor bottle, but this tasting note was taken while tasting from three different examples, and much of my score is based on the fact that for the first few hours, this was a gorgeous wine.

Acker BYO 2017 (Tribeca Grille): Wow is this young. The tannin just jumps out of the glass at you. Underneath there's this candied black cherry but without the sweetness (or fleshiness of the fruit). I found that piece interesting. Would love to try this in 10 or years and see how it's going.

Too wild for petting right now...This is super packed and has a huge, huge potential. Right now its super tight and bit alcoholic, but the flowers and minerals are hiding under lots of structure. Takes lots of faith and money to lay some of these babies down, but the reward awaits you sometime, way, way down the line..HOLD

Need time to develop. Uncorked the wine in the morning at 10 and corked it back at around 4. Brought it to the restaurant at 7 and drank at around 9
The wine is like a brunch of fresh red berries, tomato and rose. Elegant and powerful, with some smoky and toasty behind. Fine tannin and sharp acidity. Cannot imagine a young Barolo Riserva from Bruno Giacosa can be so approachable at this moment. Looking forward to see it development after a few more years!

Absolutely stunning nose of ripe strawberries, dried roses, some dark fruit and slight meaty nose. Deep and concentrated palate of deliciously sweet ripe and tremendously pure fruit. Sleek and sexy with fabulous depth. Feels like a Burgundy with pleasantly dry tannin. Superb length and grip. So good now and you know it will only get better.

Interminabile

Spago: red cherry, sweet ripe fruit, dried herbs, subtle spice notes, lovely complex aromas; bright intense red fruits, with herbs nutmeg and cocoa; extremely pure, dusty, rich red fruit; structured, tons of acidity, tannins, but still balanced. This will be amazing in 10-12 years.

Tasted at the winery. Having just come off the incredible 2009 Rocche, I was very excited to try the 2007 Riserva. A superb wine with a similar flavor profile to the 2009 with loads of sweet red fruit, but this had a secondary almost exotic element that reminded me of Le Pin. Darker fruit on the palate with a hint of asphalt. Much more structured and tannic than the 2009. Excellent grip and length. A wine built to last.

Piedmont 2013, Day 3 - Visit to Bruno Giacosa (Neive, Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy): A tremendous wine – this was a clear step up from everything else we tasted at Giacosa, and was indeed one of the two or three best wines of the entire trip. The nose was a little tight at first, but it opened up slowly to show reserved but quietly insistent aromas of black cherries and blackberries, almond fruit, a suggestion of meat and mineral, some balsamic notes, and just the lightest dusting of smoke and spice. Very pleasant. The palate was still very much dominated by its structure, with firmly muscular but somehow very refined tannins that coated the tongue and teeth, and supple, sweet acidity that left a real sense of fresheness in the mouth. However, weaving its way above, around and underneath that great structure was an effortlessly powerful beam of pure black fruit, black cherries, blackberries and plums - pure Serralunga. These were then seasoned with reams of spice and a little edge of smoke as the wine wound its way into a super long, powerful finish. Very full, very powerful, yet somehow still really neatly controlled and perfectly integrated, so that even with all its power, this was still a noble wine, showing a lot of finesse and elegance. A very complete package. This is a great wine, but it is still a baby. Give it 10 years a least if you want to start enjoying it, 20 if you want to try catching it at anywhere near peak. Superb stuff.
The nose is complex with notes of iron, meat, red fruits and mineral. On the palate the fruit is sweet, almost luscious yet held under a tight rain from the abundant, sugar coated tannins. It is a wine with an incredibly long finish.
