Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): Similar in stature to the 2009 -- riper fruit with a sweeter, confectionery aspect to it. This one actually feels a little bit more balanced, with a slight bit more acidity to it.

Dropped into a decanter served 30 minutes later and consumed with spouse over the next 2 hours. WOW kind of wine. Loads of iron, olive brine, black cherry, pepper and bacon fat. Didn't get any funk but wow was everything in balance. Long, intense and an absolute memorable experience.

Stellar showing! Iron, blood and deep earth with dark cherry and berry fruit. Exceptional balance and polish. Indisputably from the Rocks. The funk is now sublime, merging with white pepper and berries. Yet the gravelly finish is unmistakable. It is nice that this has held up so well without developing overt black olive notes that many of these older Cayuse wines can possess. We decanted 2 hours and would cut that short if we didn’t drink all of our bottles!

Double decanted, minimal sediment. Bottle from HDH auction. Great showing of aged Cayuse. Typical funk, but not overpowering, very much in harmony with the dark cherry fruit, and savory notes of iron. Polished mouthfeel, long finish.

Drinking beautifully, WOTN in a blind tasting with a number of other strong syrahs, 4 out of 6 first place votes with 1 second. Paired with a fantastic Persian lamb dish. Clear but not overwhelming Cayuse nose with a finish that lasted for nearly a minute. Glad we have more. 4 hour decant.

Popped and poured over 60 minutes. My favorite of the night- Softer than the 2009 but more complex and balanced. Lots of wet barnyard and hay, with the same flavor profile as above but much more elegant. There is a subtle strawberry streak and the finish goes for a good 45 seconds. Can drink this alone but it screams for some roasted meat - lamb would be great. This is a wonderful glass of wine. Drink now - not sure this will get better and its in such a great spot right now.

Brilliant, like dark Cherry color, dark berry fruit, pretty good but not jumping out at me. After taste of pine needles. Good. Drink now or sell. Not my style

Drinking beautifully right now - right on the cusp of developing tertiary flavors. However, there is still some big ripe fruit here - almost candied. Black cherries, blackberries, black currants. A LOT of garrigue. (I think I get garrigue on Washington Syrah; but not really on California Syrah) Mint, anise, licorice, black pepper and mushrooms. Medium + bodied, still decent tannins and acid. Drink now; or age it for 2 - 4 more years.

Simply a stellar bottle! Warm cherries, lush earth and a hint of cinnamon. But what really stands out is the incredible polish and mouthfeel! Smooth as silk. Even though this wine is often seen as lagging its brethren, this one stands above.

My last bottle. :-( Not much to add to previous TNs. This is drinking so well right now, it is wide open. I know this style isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it is certainly mine. This bottle had a (good) burnt taste on the first few tastes. Great drink....
It is always the nose and the first taste which are sooo good. Different to anything else and very recognizable (even from Baron's other wineries). The rest of the bottle is just as good! Lovely drink.

Mixed bag (The Kenwood): 30 minute double decant. Lovely red fruit and pepper. In fact, the pepper builds with time and becomes somewhat dominating. This does resemble a Northern Rhone.

My wine for a WTDS dinner. 30 minute double decant, 2.5 hours slow-O before we got around to his. Oh my, what a nose. I could smell this all night. Pepper, bacon, blackberry, cured meats, and even some violets...just so enticing. Palate largely followed nose with some herbs thrown in too; very savory. Tannins are integrate, good lift up front with a LONG finish. Too bad we ate too much before we got around to this so no food pairing to go with it to really accentuate the wine. WOW kind of wine for me and I have two left which I'll try to consume over the next 3-5 years. Really special.

Luis rides again @ The Kenwood: PnP - This was another wine that showed me how much different palates can come into play. Some in the group absolutely loved this wine. I thought it was good, but had overwhelming black pepper notes that just distracted from the wine. Nose was very nice and perfumed with red and purple fruit, smoked meat and some iron notes. Palate showed lots of black pepper (too much for me, in that it was my focus and distracted from the other elements that although present, couldn't overcome the pepper), underneath, was dark fruit, smoked meat, leather and iodine. I would have enjoyed this wine much more if the black pepper taste would have been more muted. 91 for my palate, although I am sure others would enjoy this more.

Mixed WTDS at The Kenwood (The Kenwood, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. 30 minute double decant, 2.5hr slow-O; drank a glass over an hour. Oh baby, this has a wow nose. Filled with floral aromatics, the viognier shows in spades, beautifully sanguine, bacon fat, leather, funk, roasted game, blackberry, cassis, dried leaves, and white pepper. Tons of lift and vivacity, so satiny and smooth. Loved it.

So good. TNs very similar to my previous ones. It is hard not to keep pulling this from the cellar. The opening taste was amazing. Deep fruit, an airiness, big, big bouquet and a lightness which belayed the later depth. The only problem is that it is so easy to drink the whole bottle at one sitting even when you are on your own. I should share - ooh, maybe not.

My 12th tasting note on this wine, which I've rated between 93 and 98. Last bottle, less than a week ago, was 93. This was better, more aroma and flavors, but not as great as some older bottles. Tasted alongside the 2018 Cayuse, which had a more vibrant bright color and was much more fruit-forward, almost like a zin, but extremely drinkable, with no tannins in the way. I'd give that 95. The 2010 has slight brown edges, is more of a dark ruby, slightly translucent color. The nose is typical of mature Cayuse, with smoke, roasted meat, black cherry and plum. Medium body on the palate, round and smooth, nicely balanced, no bitterness or excess heat, very long aftertaste. Fully mature, will last another few years but excellent now. Ric

At home over two nights. Still excellent, but I think it may have been better a few years ago, with more fruit and concentration. The color is still garnet, opaque, with the slightest hint of brown. Typical Cayuse syrah nose. On the palate, though, a bit less concentrated and a bit less fruit, with slight bitterness on the aftertaste. For my taste, it's time to drink my two remaining bottles. I love Cayuse and this wine was a sterling example. Earthy, funky and dark fruit on nose and palate. No decant needed. Pop. Medium to full body. Good tannins and adequate acid. Ready to go. Enjoy

Oh my goodness, this just keeps on getting better. Over the years integrating more but losing none of its chutzpah. Dark damson color which isn't bricking yet. Bright, big bouquet of red fruit, cherry and plum. A little leather and not much stank. Almost elegant if you can every call a Baron wine elegant. Big mouth feel, integrated tannin with gorgeous fruit. Very clearly lineated. Long finish. This is drinking beautifully now at 11 years old. Not close to the end of the drinking window yet. Yum.

I opened this with some friends and it was alongside a 2003 Saxum Bone Rock (good, drink up), 2013 Donelan Obsidian (wow! Cayuse like), a 2013 SQN Le Supplement (massive and spectacular), and a 2016 The Third Twin Nuestra (feral, wild, cerebral).
While this was a fantastic bottle, I think it’s going to get slightly better (it bulked up and added a touch more of everything on day two). Undeniably Cayuse in style, but more northern Rhône Syrah than new world Syrah. Aromatically you are hit with that classic funk that Cayuse is known for...black olive, iron, mineral, and fox fur. Not sure of the whole cluster use here but it comes across as fairly strong/green with fruit notes of underripe black cherry. The splash of Viognier that Cayuse utilizes for their Cailloux makes this so perfumed. On the palate, it really shines showing iron, teriyaki, and olive tapenade. The savoriness of these wines meshes well with the fruit as age sets in and the fruit returns towards the back of the palate...blackberry, mulberry, and spicy rhubarb pie. Fantastic now, possibly outstanding in the next 2-3yrs. If opening soon, decant a couple hours and you’ll be golden.
Trying to find my older Cayuse (<2011) and its proving difficult (bad record keeping), so this one ended up being uncorked not more than two weeks after the last one. Slightly medicinal, but with nice smoky green hints. Medium to full bodied, juicy and fresh with a long mildy tannic finish, loads of blackberry and currant fruit. Pure and sweet on the finish. This is tasty and ripe but with a slightly green edge.

Note from 3rd night after opening. Opaque dark center. Maybe a tinge of brick on the rim, and is more garnet than purple. Intense to very intense nose, maybe not as expressive as on the first night, some of the olive and meat notes are not so pronounced, more deep smokey, brambly plum fruit, a little sweaty. More of the same on the palate, beginning to get a bit of harsh acidity that was not there on the first night, meaty, ripe plum and blackberry fruit. with long finish. This was clearly better on the first night (94) - would rate this (91) tonight, so going to keep at 93 points (same as last note). Based on this showing, probably need to drink my remaining bottle over the next year or so. These do age very nicely.

Decanted. No sediment noted. Nose has iron, stone and dust notes. Red fruit on the palate. For all the funk and interesting character, the palate is smooth and seamless. Finishes with strong iron character. A pleasure now, but this isn't going away for a long time.

This was a particularly good example. Clean and delineated. The nose is huge and specific: plum, stone and leather. In the mouth, medium mouthfeel, lots of bloodiness. Very easy to drink, with a long aftertaste.

Perfect cork. Dark purple from center to edge, no bricking. 60-minute decant and drank over 2 hours. Less funk than most Cayuse examples, fruit is more to the fore. Distinct black pepper spiciness. I wouldn’t call it elegant but perhaps not the same density as other Cayuse syrahs. Very enjoyable wine, recommend with spicy fare like cioppino. I doubt it will improve from here but no signs of fading, drink over next 0-5 years.

I reckon these need at least 10 years from vintage for the funk to calm down and the fruit to come to the fore. This was a bit punchy on opening but settled into itself with time in the decanter and turned into a beautifully balanced, dare i say it elegant, expression of Syrah with no heat but just maybe maybe a touch of concentration on the palate. Really very good.

Popped and poured over 2 hours. Takes a good 30 minutes to come around. Lots of barnyard funk on the nose and lots of red fruit and peeper flavors. This is not my favorite, but I appreciate the effort and balance. This is a well made wine.

This didn't bowl me over as much as some other Cayuse syrahs, including previous bottles of this same wine, but still outstanding and perfectly drinkable. Dark and opaque, with immediate pronounced "barnyard" aromas of tar, meat, dark fruits, smoke. Full flavors, perfectly balanced, tannins in the background to the fruit, which is very round but mouth coating. Long sweet aftertaste to match. No need to age this further, but will certainly keep for more years. Ric

Decanted for 2 hours prior to serving with lamb. Great balance between fruit and earthiness. We disagreed about whether we tasted cherry or barnyard first. Leather, soil, dark cherry, with long finish. I'd say it's good for at least another decade.

A great comfort wine. Big WA Syrah - lots of blood, dark fruit, integrated but big tannins. Interesting reading the Parker review - this didn't feel quite ready - maybe it is the different barrel approach. So this may get better. If so the integrated tannins will become more so and the big fruit will deflate a little. Still a benchmark wine for WA
Dark fruit, brine, olives, black berries, and savory notes on the nose. Good acidity with medium tannins and flavors of ripe dark berries, black olives, and bacon fat on the palate. Long finish. A wonderful new world Syrah that tastes a little like a Northern Rhone.

Good quality grapes, kind of briney taste to it. This was my first Cayuse experience and I wasn't in love like I thought I would be. I've had La Rata (from Cayuse vineyards) and Reynvaan and their rocks funk was way better. Will stick to those for future purchases. Tasted alongside some heavyweights from Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Mendoza.

Cayuse is not always my cup of tea but this seems to be improving with age. Gone is what I call the "baby poopy diaper" (thank goodness). Now on the nose there is immediate meaty, smoky aroma wrapped around a core of dark fruit. Notes of anise and barnyard are in the back ground. Palate showing continued youth but with well integrated tannins and medium finish.

Immediately showed a powerful and typical Cayuse syrah nose, with lots of dark plums, charred wood, roasted meat, complex. Rich and full on the palate, perfectly balanced, very drinkable. What's not to like? I will admit that the pop n' pour was the freshest tasting; lots of juicy dark fruits and soft tannins. Day two, much like the first. By the third day, more lead and leather, tapenade and earth. Finished a tad hot on day three.

Dark, brooding, and spectacular. There's a unique earthy twang to this bottle that un-offensively borders on sour, but the wine is altogether quite well-balanced. Overall delicious and very fun. The first Cayuse I've had that could keep my coming back. Have not idea how this will age, but certainly enjoyable now.

It took several hours to open completely, but when it did, it was fabulous! Dark garnet and opaque, with complex and pronounced aromas of blackberries and charred wood. Full-bodied flavors, but as usual, perfectly balanced and smooth, with loads of dark fruit flavors, nice acidity, and soft tannins in the background. The aftertaste keeps going on, also smooth and balanced. This are, to my taste, the best wines made in the U.S.A. today. Ric

Popped and poured. This is a medium-dark-red wine. On the nose, I get pepper, game, olive, and gravel. In the mouth, this is a medium-weight wine, one that is savory, but with good acid and balance. The finish is chewy with a slight bit of ash texture and flavor. Overall, this is a unique and authentic Syrah -- the wine is like drinking a stew. Oddly, this was better on the first couple glasses, which is the inverse of my usual experience. 92 points.

Slight Cayuse funk on the nose ( but not as much as usual). Medium bodied with red fruit, pepper and cote rotie earthiness. Plenty of acid keeping it fresh. Flavors kept opening with air over the hour or so it lasted. Great wine...no surprise. 4-5 years left.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. The wine totally lacked complexity. The nose was nice and rich but it was drinking flat and uninspiring. Taste was somewhat inky and the finish was non-existent. Nearing full maturity, delightful. Immediate pronounced typical Cayuse aroma of smoke, roasted meat, dark fruits. Full-bodied but extremely smooth and balanced, with flavors matching the nose. Not at all coarse or heavy, but having some elegance. Still some tannin and alcohol noticeable, but in the background. Just a shade less concentrated than several other recent Cayuse syrahs, but excellent. We liked it better than any of a La Mouline 1980-2005 vertical the night before! Ric
My cellar must be too perfect and wines really need to age. My natural underground cellar is a constant 60 degrees. Wine still throws off fragrant blueberry nose. No complexity. Will wait five more years to open my last bottle of this vintage.
Dark garnet, completely opaque. Very viscous, with slow moving "legs". The nose took some time to open, but became very pronounced, of roast meat, charred wood, blackberries, plums. Full-bodied flavors, also dark fruits, building over 30 seconds, mouth-coating but perfectly balanced, very long aftertaste, with some anise. Nearly perfect, and very drinkable, but will easily hold many years. Ric

The night we opened this bottle I was greeted with angry raw juice. Tannic-with acid and crushed bright unsettled fruit. Almost undrinkable!!! There was power and complexity hidden beneath this assault on the palate-but you had to look for it. Day Two: Elements coming together-fruit still bright and forward but a profile I would never pay over $20. Finish short and straightforward. Day Three: This is the day magic happened-the wine is still not ready by a long shot but the wines charm is beginning to emerge. The nose has taken a darker turn revealing a compelling complexity. Each smell reveals a different character. This is not a one act play-but many acts with encores. The palate is now revealing what is to come years down the road. There is still heat on the tongue-but once it disappears a slow captivating mouthfeel coats the palate with dark fruit interplaying with nuances of other flavors. This will be astonishing-but time is needed.
Got a wild hair an opened this last night by myself, not something I typically do for bottles like this. Not disappointed with my impulsiv(o) decision. Aromas jump out of the glass, you can smell it from two feet away...super rich blueberries, blackberry, cherry, sweet wildflowers, meat, game, green olives. Not nearly as much Cayuse funk on the nose as other bottlings. The palate is in line, and loaded with texture and incredibly rich flavor. Ripe berry compote, liquid rock, olive tapenade, floral notes. In an amazing place right now, and the perfect balance of bright fruit and classic Cayuse savoriness. A finish that stays, and evolves for 30 seconds.
My favorite thus far of the syrah bottlings, and a great example of umami in wine.
Violtets, stone, white pepper, blueberry, bacon, and olives. This has a lot going on! Silky smooth, with refined tannins at this relatively early age. A fantastic effort.

Strong nose of wildflower, saline / brine, dark fruit, funk. Palate was at first all brine but settled down quickly to reveal roasted meats, smoke, cherry, pepper, black olive. These are probably very close to reaching their sweet spot, if like me you're into marrying the best balance of acid & fruit. Delicious.

Darkest wine of the tasting and certainly the more particular one. Easy to guess this was the Cayuse with such a nose with pepper, smoke, coffee, some green tones, black olives, tapenade and cola. That's quite a nose. The wine is fresh, however, it's too light on palate and I dare to say it was easy drink, with a forgettable, short finish. Could be the difference with the previous flights or just that this is too young to enjoy. It is a good wine, I see the funky thing but I was looking forward to much more on palate than it showed. A bit disappointing. 90-91

I do not understand why people rave about these wines. Had a strange taste, hard to describe but nothing like Syrah's I have had in the past. Definitely not worth $100 a bottle. I also had a bottle of the Camaspelo which was nice but again not worth the money. Hey tried it, won't buy it again.

The nose and initial flavors seem Cayuse-like but it has an odd bit of hollowness mid-palate. Yet, wonderful flavors of smoky black tea, raw meat, overripe raspberry, with black olive on the finish. Had decanted three hours but the wine did not show its best until another couple of hours. This particular Cayuse is not as compelling as the same vineyard in earlier vintages. Perhaps some additional time in bottle will help.

I opened this with some hesitation given its youth, but it was a joy to drink. Beautiful mix of floral, pepper and cherry notes, and --as always-- bordering on savory with some olive/briney character. This has great depth and length. Every vintage of this wine is fun to drink, but usually at this point the pieces are a bit disconnected. It feels far more integrated and evolved here. Also notable, perhaps due to the Viognier component being upped to 10%, is that the scale of this is less massive. But no less delicious. 95.

My first Cayuse. Unlike any other wine I've had. The funk I've always heard of was there - at times I felt it was a compliment; at times I felt it was a detractor. Certainly well made and enjoyable, but not sure if it's my style for this price. Reserving judgment as the bottles arrived fairly recently - will try another in a few months to determine if I want to keep buying. (89+?)

Decanted for an hour. I am instantly reminded of elsewhere, at a different time; taken there by way of a structured, eminent Syrah. Flawless in execution with such a seductive and juicy palate, again, showing tons of structure for long-term development. Lamb kabobs, garrigue, ripe cherry, boysenberry, rice pilaf, maple wood, bacon fat and smoke. Such a succulent opening and a very intent, long finish. Superbly rich, yet light on her feet as well. Drink 2014 - 2029.

The funk is now sublime, merging with white pepper and berries. Yet the gravelly finish is unmistakable. It is nice that this has held up so well without developing overt black olive notes that many of these older Cayuse wines can possess. Can drink this alone but it screams for some roasted meat - lamb would be great. This is a wonderful glass of wine. Drink now - not sure this will get better and its in such a great spot right now.

Cayuse is not always my cup of tea but this seems to be improving with age. Gone is what I call the "baby poopy diaper" (thank goodness). Not at all coarse or heavy, but having some elegance. Still some tannin and alcohol noticeable, but in the background. Just a shade less concentrated than several other recent Cayuse syrahs, but excellent. We liked it better than any of a La Mouline 1980-2005 vertical the night before!

Tannins assez charnus et hyper long.
SUPERBE!

Decanted 3 hours. Good but not good enough against an 05 Pax Walker Vine Hill Syrah

This is great stuff. Layers of flavors plus a silky depth that seems even more refined than Cailloux of past. Just an amazing depth to my palate, perfect for savoring.

Dark garnet, opaque. Pronounced shiraz aroma, complex. Full, rich balanced flavors, no significant tannins. Perfectly ready to drink, but will easily last 5 or more years.

Darn right delicious even at this early stage. Full of ripe spicy / peppery fruit. All components well integrated. Liking the Cayuse, my friends.
