Slow ox one hour. Medium to full bodied. Black cherry, licorice, herbs and smoke. Elegant and nicely balanced if lacking some of the power of the better vintages. Still this is a spectacular 1999.

Nose: black prune, forest, dark fruits Notes: tasted in a Lafleur vertical of 88, 89, 90, 93, 94, 99. Started drinking after breathing in the bottle for 3 hours. The aromas and palates are relatively darker than the other vintages. The overall feeling is that the wine is still very young and relatively heavier than the others and it seems like a lot more time is required for this wine to integrate. This is a little different to my last encounter to the wine which I felt was much more ready. This could be the result of bottle variation so I would not be able to draw much conclusion to it today. However, based on the performance today I would anticipate another 7-8 years before my next visit to the wine. Drink: 2030- 2060 Rating: 90

Blackish crimson color with some bricking. Decanted and aerated for 90 minutes then drank over an hour. Beautiful nose of blackberries, truffle, some earth, mocha, licorice, cassis, a very refined entry on the palate with lots of perfumed dark fruits, nice acidity, good complexity but not mind bending, good mocha tinged finish with decent length and resolved tannins. Medium bodied. Delicious.

Beautiful if unspectacular Very together, smooth and good length … but lacking depth and vibrancy. It’s definitely what you drink is what you get. That’s no criticism really - it’s a great wine, from a less than average year, made with the usual care expected from the family. No rush to drink, but also unlikely to get any better.

It seems to have been almost 9 years since my last crack at this wine. Time has been good here. Splash decanted and poured, which initially brought about a nice plummy, slightly firm wine with loads of earth, flowers, and truffle with a touch of olives. 1 hour later things picked up. The wine fleshed out and began delivering ripe plums, chocolate, truffle, flowers, mint, and fig. The tannins softened, helping the wine to spread out, soften and leave you with cocoa topped cherries, plums, and a touch of mint on the backend. I was not expecing this bottle to be so good.

Decanted for three hours. This is a more medium weight, elegant style of Lafleur. Very classic stylistically this shows black currant, plum, mocha and cigar box coming through with layers of complexity. This wine will never blow your mind but it is a beautiful wine in an off vintage.

The 1999 Lafleur is a fun wine to drink now, seemingly fully mature. The nose shows fine blue and black fruit with truffle, game, and chestnut. Its aromatic volume and vigor leave something to be desired. While the elements here are obviously enjoyable, it simply doesn’t possess the dynamic nature to propel it to the next tier.

Similar to my last note from 2019. This may be slightly more resolved than last time, but there is still a slight veil of bitterness overlaying the fruit on the palate. Aromatically it is pure and inviting. Tannins are like cocoa powder and are perfectly balanced. This will hang on for a while but it’s pretty nice right now. Not sure how much upside there is.

alluring nose of carrot tops and dirt. very earthy and pretty mouth - elegant but lacks umph. refined yet still quite tannic, this wine can still last a bunch more years. Not getting any of the lushness that I'd expect from Pomerol. In his Lafleur retrospective Neal Martin summed it up nicely as 'little Left Bank in style, with a graceful finish'. Decanted for three hours. Terrific sophisticated nose of black cherry and a little leather. The wine is fully mature, beautifully integrated and medium to full bodied. 2020 New Year Celebration (Fleur de Sel Restaurant, Taichung): Slow ox for 4 hours before serving. Opulent and vivid, still a bit tight yet opens up bit by bit throughout our dinner. Good structure with fine tannin. Cherry, vanilla with a hint of dark chocolate. I would hold this for 3-5 years before opening another one.

Light bricking at the edge with a deep red core. Rustic nose, smoked meat, spice, tomato chutney, with some red fruit in the background. Silky on the palate. Pure and firm structure. Acidity is medium. This opened up nicely after a couple hours but is still tightly wound. I would wait at least another 3 years before trying again. It will last another decade no problem.

Outstanding. This needs a heavy decant as out of the bottle it is tight and awkward. After four hours it is stunning. The nose is fantastic and majestic with red fruit, flowers and bell pepper notes that signals the wines breeding. The palate is beautiful, complex and well balanced. This is a cab franc driven version of Lafleur that really works and is the best wine I have tasted from Bordeaux among the 1999s. This is not a blockbuster style of Lafleur like the 2000 or the 2010 but for drinking now this is a great option.

Big rich powerful nose of blackcurrant and cassis, supported by lead pencil and minerals. Big structure on the palate, with high tannin and acidity, this is really still too young though is drinking nicely. It presents quite a rich palate with similar notes as the nose. would leave for another 10 years as I think it will deliver far more at the age of 30 than it does now.

Man this is drinking so beautifully and is obviously a fast-maturing vintage for this wine. What an amazing silky texture with that incredible graphite streak that this wine develops with age shining through. Finishes like a silk missile with lovely soft tannins and elegant complexity with notes of sweet truffles and dark spice. A great Lafleur for drinking now and over the next decade.

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has medium ruby color, with garnet rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas of black fruit of plum and blackberry, herbal notes of mint, oak notes of cedar, sweet spice of clove, kernel notes of dark chocolate, animal notes of leather, mineral notes of earth, maturity notes of leather. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, it has medium tannin of ripe and well-integrated texture, with medium alcohol and medium (+) body, medium intensity flavors of black fruit such as blackberry and dark cherries, oak notes of cedar, sweet spice of clove, kernel notes of dark chocolate. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality Pomerol, with good intensity and complex nose first showing a fairly minty characters upon opening, then gradually shifting to oaky note, with a nice black fruit background. The nose shifted to more chocolate and earthy later on. The wine has a nice and elegant structure, well balanced, with nice concentration and a long finish. Ready to drink now, the wine can be maintained for another 2-3 years.

A really nice wine. Opened and decanted for 2 hours. Dark purple in color with no sign of maturity. Huge sweet cherry nose bursting from the glass. Very different than when last tried 4 years ago where I described the nose as a Summer garden. Delicious blended palate of cherry, charcoal, earth with some minerality. No tannin and a long finish.

Quite a nice surprise for the vintage. Without decanting, the initial sip was a bit dry, but with 30 minutes of air, plums, earth, oak, spice and olive notes began to emerge. With an hour of air, the medium bodied wine softened, taking on a fresh, plum, soft textured and cherry personality.

Blind tasted in Amsterdam at Het Nederlands Wijnantiquariaat. This was one of the wines I brought (luckily the '71 Palmer and '00 Mouton were my other 2). It was a real disappointment. Decanted over an hour, the wine showed some fruit, bit of right bank nose of coffee, but otherwise tannic, dry and unbalanced. Perhaps more years would do it more justice (high hopes).

AMS Wijnantiquariaat (blind tasting) Bordeaux. Dark colour. Closed nose, some dark fruits. In the mouth more dark fruits like ripe cherries and vanilla and cake tones. Mouth full of tannins. But I must say I found it too 'fabricated'. The wine-maker used too many tricks to produce this wine. Thus missing balance and cohesion.

Berserkfest weekend (Leo's): Perfumed cherry, earthy, sweet-spice nose, though very tight. Very structured and somewhat backward with loads of (approachable) tannin, medium-plus acid, ripe fruit, tobacco, spice, and cedar. A single sip after two hours of air was more approachable. Very pretty, but way too young. Very very good.

Wow. Yeah, it's ridiculously young - but - wow! A stunning perfume straight away, combining red and dark fruits, tobacco leaf, cedar and leather with more exotic spicy and sandalwood elements. It's very tightly wound on the palate initially; not as expressive as it is aromatically with the tannic structure dominating, but with time it softens and becomes more accessible. A real treat right now, but the balance, richness and structure here suggest this is going to be an incredible wine over the long haul.

Opened for 3 hours before start rolling. Crushed berries which pretty dense in the beginning with loads of coffee beans scent. With times it became pure with floral dominated nose. While it's obvious that it's too young, it already offered silky palate with full bodied and delicate tannins. Round and uniquely pomerol with killing finish. Excellent wine and will be great with time. Only problem is how to keep my hands off the rest of them in the cellar.

Second bottle of the case, and in this vintage that’s no waste. After an hour or so in the decanter, this showed beautifully. A nose of pure silky, crimson berries, a hint of autumn. On the palate again, pure silky texture that just luxuriates in the mouth. But a midpalate of firm if not solid acidity, and a beautiful saline quality. Easy to enjoy but not in any way simple. Delicious wine and great with the lamb. I do wish I bought more of this when it was affordable.

Dark red blue-ish colour. Completely closed on the nose. Brutally strong in the mouth, displaying a muscular style and full body, intense, packed flavours and a huge tannic structure. Dense fruit flows in an oily thick, chewy texture, followed by a long, balanced finish.

Dark red. Not quite purple, but very deep, crimson red. Beautifully integrated oak on the nose. Yet closed somehow and quite tight. On it's journey through the mouth this wine stirs up a myriad of sensations. Very elegant and defined. A very effortless and focused wine, built into a solid structure. Long, well-defined attractive finish. Great potential here.

Opened, but not decanted, an hour prior. A stunning perfumed nose:Flower garden on a cool Summer morning. Just beautiful. Dark red/purple in the glass. Lovely integrated palate of plum, cocoa, and mineral. Fine long finish. A great wine for the vintage. Still slightly tannic, but only slightly. Ready to drink, but will only get better with time. Perfect with grilled rack of lamb. A real treat.

Early Mar 2009, Tasting “Chateau Lafleur” at the Rheingau Gourmet Festival: dark red color; intense cherry, truffles, cassis, chocolate and coffee aromas/flavors; lush and smooth on the palate; short finish.
This bottle of 1999 Lafleur seemed to be mature and was very approachable.

Château Lafleur tasting (Rheingau Gourmet & Wine Festival Hattenheim, Germany): Delicious ripe fruit, very complex, starting to open, some evolution, lovely balance.
