Hyacinth Dinner (Hyacinth, St. Paul, MN): Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as Bellissimo. Dense with black cherry fruit, succulent on the palate, young, tar, lacquer, firm tannins. It's all there.

Quick replacement for a flawed '08. PnP no formal note, served with one course at a restaurant, recorked and brought home. Note from later.
Nice mix of fruit, dried herds, dusty road on the nose. Palate shows black cherries, sage, stewed tomato, and coffee. Tannins are still pretty evident but not obtrusive.

Decanted for sediment and consumed in a Grassl cru over the course of an evening. Like others have noted, this needs about an hour in the decanter to start showing much, especially aromatically. Nose is mostly baked earth with just a hint of dark blue fruit. I found the palate to be better and more interesting with high acidity and a savory and herbaceous character alongside deep red fruit. Very nice wine, I just wish the aromatics were as nice as the palate - perhaps this will happen with more time… definitely drank best at the end of the evening. 92+

Tasted double blind. This showed young, modern, and very seductive. It is very well made with lots of luxurious oak notes which are well integrated. Not a vintage for traditionalist for sure, though but being a Sangiovese newby without much preconception or experience, this was fun to drink. However, the much more traditional, light, red fruited Pergole Torte 2006 (95+pts) we had later that night, clearly is the wine and the type of Sangiovese you want to drink all day everyday; the Cepparello is more interchangeable.
TN: Hot Tuscan earth, leafy notes and ripe red fruit mixed with some luxurious oak notes, some nice coffee and toasty notes. Quite complex and very well defined. Although it’s lush and modern, it’s still an elegant wine and loads of fun to drink. Super satiny tannins, and a high enough freshness.
Decanting: 1 hour in the decanter should be sufficient.

on the nose quite a lot of wet wood, sous bois and coffee, caramell, some tomato, some spice as well and some dark berry fruits.
the aromacomposition showed that this must come from a warmer vintage.
on the palate same as on the nose, still lots of tannins and wood but also herbacious. but also quite high acidity. quite expressive.
you can sense that it has some age but still a lot to offer. and as it was on the nose dark fruited also on the palate.
lacks a bit of complexity but long, very long. for me personally it was lacking a bit of freshness and elegance, not so refined. a bit too rough and too woody for my style.
can be drunk now but on the same time it has some time left on the tank, i expect this to get better with some more age.
over all id say that this wine is rather artificial… not much soul and not much „edges“ and character, which I lately seek more and more in wine…

Tasted blind as part of a small Sangiovese vs Nebbiolo event. The dried tomato along with herbal complexity that felt almost like a Caprese gave always the grape immediately. Red berry fruit of cherry. Earthy base. The oak adds a sweet spicy dimension, but also more plump, wooden notes. Expressive acidity, good follow-through from attack to finish, tannins with a lot of grip and a slightly darker fruit profile on the palate. Enjoyable now with a proper decant, but overall felt somewhat heavy still and could definitely do with more bottle age.

This is still a very good wine - the wine has clearly developed further since we had our last bottle in October 2020 - the fruit is still drak cherries - red currant and black berries - we are still having medium tannins and also medium acidity - the better integration from acidity gives the wine a really great balance - also we are this time clearly getting tobacco - all in all has developed like we hoped for - and we are happy to increase our rating to 94.

Dark ruby garnet in color. Full, forward & fragrant nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blueberries & plums with overtones of dusty/earthy & dried herbs, tobacco, tar, spices, anise, minerals & a hint of cedar in the background. Medium bodied with very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blueberries & plums with spices, herbs & minerals. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing but even at 12 years of age, it has the fruit & structure to continue developing with additional aging for a few more years more if stored properly.

Tasted alongside La Lagune 09 Decanted for 1h Reductive nose. very tertiary for its young age. In March 21 we tasted another bottle of this 09 vintage which was much fresher and had more fruit, maybe this was not a perfect bottle. leather, licorice, tobacco, mushrooms, fruit is very shy, has a hard time shining through. Mouth: sous-bois, earthy, leather, cinnamon, licorice and some black fruit. tannins present, high acidity, good drinkflow.

nose was not as accessible as the Cepa 16. hints of menthol and mint, ripe cherries, berries, sous bois, vanilla, cinnamon and coffee.
on the palate structured and balanced. same as the 16 but more aged and complex, you can feel that both vintages had optimal climate conditions. high tannins, acidity and alcohol, medium to full body. tannins not yet fully integrated, but this will be completed after some more years of bottle aging. here also, I sense a distinctive carmell aroma that I found both in the 99 and 16 Cepa as well. long finish.
hold for another 5 years.

Nose: not so intense (medium), a little closed compared to the 2016. Very few first notes of maturity are noticeable. Ripe cherries, strawberries, Nutella, cinnamon, caramel and some cedar and some coffee and a hint of leather. More earthy and less fruity than the 2016.
Mouth: high alcohol, high acidity, nice medium tannins that are well integrated and give the wine a lot of structure. Great velvety texture and more body (medium +) than the 2016. Also a bit more complex with more structure - really terrifically made. The Cepparello has a tremendous straight run and long finish!
Can still gain in complexity with a little more maturity (still storable for a good 10 years).

Italian wine swap session. Drank in Gabriel Standart. Tasted blind. Cork-closure. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of violets, dark red cherries, fresh leather, tarry earth, dark licorice with more air. Developing. On the palate, dry, good high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), fine mouth-coating high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of licorice, sour red cherries, dark red cherries, fresh leather, tobacco tar earth, stony minerality, balsamic. Long finish. Very good quality. Lovely lively yet silky but mouth-coating mouth-feel. Already so nice drinking. But I suggest maybe another 2-3 more years for this to sing more. I upped this by 1 point after >24hours of air.

A great wine - that gives you a lot of fruit its dark cherries - its clearly also red currant and some black berries - medium tannins and actually higher acidity - this is actually not affecting the overall balance which is good - we are at the moment missing tertiary notes - but also see that as a sign of further improvement for the wine is to come - we are starting with solid 93.

Sexy, balanced wine. Probably getting close to the peak of its powers but could still see some upside. PNP, only needed about 15 minutes in the glass to open up, but didn't fall apart at all over 1.5 hours. Paired very well with duck ragu.

Coravin. Glass 3. Hmm, still northern Rhone on the nose but speaks a little more italian now when tasting it. Still young but definitely in drinking window. The last glass felt younger, maybe day to day variation of my tasting buds or it has evolved during one month since the first coravin glass. 91 p.

May 2018: With grilled pork chop, asparagus with balsamic, mixed grill. Good, very warm, rich, polished. Oak spice on it, but oak is very well integrated. Some cocoa. Dark and densely textured. Drank well after 30m before dinner. Liked but I would generally prefer something less warm and oaked.
Aug 2019: With grilled steak. Enjoyed thoroughly. Decanted an hour. Too much to drink on its own before dinner, but beautiful with the food. Definitely a warmer wine but didn't get too much new oak on it.

Pretty closed right after opening, opens up nicely with about 2 hours in the decanter. Pretty notes of sweet dark cherries, balsamic notes too, licorice, some crushed dark flowers, also some tobacco, leather and a nice graphite minerality. It‘s medium-full bodied, without being heavy, has medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin that is very good quality. Goog length too. A very pretty Cepparello at the beginning of the drinking window. (94+)

Not as good as my previous bottle (last November). I didn’t decent it as long (1 hour and then drunk over about 4 hours) but it just seemed a little too high acid and not the depth or complexity I was expecting. I’ve one bottle left of the 6 bottle case I bought many years ago and I’m now intreguied how this will be. I would suggest a v long decent right now for others opening this but better still to wait longer.

On taste was high alcohol, 14:5 when looked at and was very green on the palate but with heaps of potential, from reading other notes seems long lived for the grape and so I’ll leave alone for say 5 years .

Well, she has room to run! The wine needs to be out of the bottle for a couple of hours. But then you are rewarded with a dark fruit aroma that also has some cedar and cinnamon accents. The wine still has fresh Sangiovese acidic freshness but the wine reveals a complexity that hints at rhubarb and cherries. The taste lingers and ends with cocoa and coffee. So, if you can, don’t touch it in your cellar for another three years... otherwise... I forgive you.

Drinking well after a brief decant. Great depth with a full and vibrant palate. Nice nose and clean and long finish. This is rounding into form. Will improve as the tannins integrate further and as it picks up further secondary notes. Excellent;ent now with outstanding potential.

A modern take on Sangiovese, but a very successful one. Drunk over two days, decanted. Crystalline aromas of sour and bitter cherry, blueberry, smoke, garrigue, damson skin, a touch of polished wood. All very clear and well declined and purely delineated. On the palate, the tannins are satiny. There are absolutely no hard edges, save for perhaps a hint of astringency on the finish, and that is extraordinary for such a relatively young wine. On the palate it is already mature, with tertiary notes of dried fruit, apothecary's herbs, and glace cherry cake. Not at all sweet, with the herbaceous and medicinal elements acting as fine counterbalance to the pure core of marasca. I think now is the time to drink, especially because the tannins and acidity are perfectly tamed, which suggests that this is a Sangiovese at its peak. Not sure it will get much better than this. A fine example of how to produce a modern Sangiovese with elegance and restraint.

Funnny. While I very much respect the producer and the wine, I'm left ordering upon the smell if Sangiovese just can't handle so much French oak. Dessicates and becomes tarry? But just opened too. Maybe air will resolve.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS #113; Italy: Chianti Classico Riserva (By BS): Smoky bouquet with vanilla, cassis and other dark berry fruits, sweet spices and a touch of barnyard. On the palate chocolate, dark forest fruits, licorice, cinnamon, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Overall an elegant and refined wine with a good length. 91 - 92+
Youthful and tight after opening and a one hour decant. After another hour began to open up. Dark fruits, a bit of leather and some licorice on the nose. Full palate with evident but not obtrusive tannins. Excellent balance. Dark cherry, herbs on the palate, medium finish that is a bit astringent right now. Great with food, a bit too young on its own, should develop well over the next several years.

Off restaurant list. Having had a few pleasant, fruit forward but rather simple 09 Brunellos, was not sure what to expect here. But the Cepparello delivers even in such a more difficult vintage. Bright cherry fruit, earth, good acidity, medium finish. Accessible now despite fine to medium tannins. Very nice 92-93

Vindredi (Bellevue, WA): Tasted blind. Bright fruit, burnt rubber, and some funk on the nose. I found this a bit astringent, with big, burly tannins. Certainly more "classic" in structure, but perhaps in a slightly awkward place right now?

härligt fyllig och rik, mörka bär, körsbär, lakrits toner, sträva men snälla tanniner med tanke på att det är ett ungt vin. Lite stängt, känsla av grym potential efter några år till i källaren.

Nose: a bit of gingerbread and perfume. alcohol and strawberries too. Smells young. Hard to notice what wine it is. Might be from the Rhone valley or Tuscany.
Attack: Tannins and spicy gingerbread. Intense alcohol. Almost unbalanced at this point. Propably a supertuscan.
Midpalete: Strawberries, sour cherries, tannins, spice and a bit of oak. Not that interesting.
Finish: long and alcoholic. not very pleasant.
This wine might be a bit too young but It´s not a great wine today. not worth the money but ok with food.

Early Jan 2014 in a restaurant: not decanted; bordeaux red color; nose and mouth: cherry, red currant, pomme de granate, raspberry, blackberry and blueberry aromas and flavors; slightly sour touch; full body; lush texture; short finish.

Mintier on the nose here - still very fresh and youthful. The fruit coming through on aeration seems darker/denser. Cloves, nutmeg aromas; Silky palate but more unformed/embryonic. Acidity and tannins are much more noticeable. Fascinating to compare this to the cork closure.

Lovely nose - rich and denser fruit than the straight Chianti. Wonderful complexity unfurling even at this age, herbal and savoury nuances alongside the rich morello fruit; nutmeg entry, dense, rich, weighty palate yet has wonderful texture poise and elegance. Very fine tannins. Delicious wine, great potential.

Elegant and feminine nose of spices, cherry, menthol. Delicate and totally enchanting at first sniff! Impressive balance on the refined palate with red fruit, spices and a core of minerals. Excellent young bottle. Decanted one hour, consumed over next three. Beautifully balanced with great fruit, a full palate and a clean and long finish. More concentrated than a chianti classico, but maintains great varietal correctness. Acid/tannin balance and depth of fruit indicate a long life ahead with considerable possible upside. Very nice right now.

Quite a nice nose of blackberry and liquorice and leather with a well done wooden touch. Rich but not overdone. Entry is tart fruit becomes sweet and then turns to a very balsamic finish. This is fascinating wine honestly. An interesting tobacco and tart finish that stays and stays. Fairly high acidity at this point. This needs time but will be well worth it.

Tasted together with Cepparello 2016.

So cool to drink a wine at its peak. Lots of fruits on the nose and mouth. Ripe red cherry followed by blackberry with blueberry. Tobacco and spices, mostly cinnamon candy, follow. Super silky tannins. Some mint on the finish.
