Decanted for 2+ hours. Served in a flight of 5 wines from 1993, 30 years from vintage. Meo Richebourg, Mongeard-Mugneret Richebourg, Bouchard La Romanee and a corked Rouget Cros Parantoux. I ranked this first in the flight. Soaring nose, spices, sandalwood and faded cherry. Lithe and elegant palate, a little lean and firm with a slight hollowing out in the mid-palate. Very mineral laden on the long finish.

Ginger spice aromas along with raspberry and cherry fruits. Fruits have a tart edge to them in the mouth and the palate is firm. It is a little lean through the mid and finishes with good minerally detail.

i've been chasing that 1993 La Tache experience I had 11 years ago from ANY 93 DRC and it's all been disappointing. At this point i've had more than a handful of perfectly stored 93 DRC and i've been incredibly non plussed by them. Maybe bad luck? I dunno. This was fairly hollow on fruit and just loads of acidity. Just giving nothing but acidity on the wine as the palate was thin.

DRC, RSV Vertical: 93, 01, 05, 07, 14 (Republique, LA): Served first in a five vintage vertical. Showed beautiful on the nose, aristocratic and mature, with damp earth, complex spice, and attractive dark red fruit. Screamed top class, mature Bourgogne. Touch of mint. Unfortunately all the glory here was very short lived, didn’t make it more than a half hour before the nose became maderized. While it held up better on the palate, it just wasn’t very interesting, and clearly not at all what it should be.

Good wine on a sad day. Over the last years, this wine has developed tremendously. From a slightly hollow, uncharming wine to one that is now open and seductive. Floral notes, herbs, very DRC smell. Good consistency and lengthy. At the current pricing A good buy for drinking in the next 5 years.

DRC vs Leroy Dinner (Kheam Hock Road): A good, solid showing, but rather put in the shade by a fabulous bottle of 1993 Leroy RSV. This had a really nice nose, with black cherries and dark berries, a touch of earthiness, and a lovely infusion of fragrant wood spices. Very DRC. The palate was still very fresh and lovely, with bright 1993 acidity and fine, but firm tannins racing through a lovely rounded mouthful of sweet red cherries and juicy berries, again touched with a good bit of spice and earth as the wine trailed away into a nicely detailed finish. Perhaps just a bit on the leaner side, but otherwise very enjoyable. Charming rather than profound, but this was very yummy.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): In DRC RSV 93/96/98 flight. Open 4+ hours before serving with a brief double decant. Broad array of red berries throughout with some cherry and complex, savory spice. Moderate ripeness and less concentration than I normally expect from DRC RSV, but this is so long, elegant and charmingly textured. Great today, but there is still upside form here.

Annual gathering with Chicago winos in Chicago – DRC RSV vertical, Selosse – Lieux-Dits and etc. (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Incredibly youthful nose displaying vibrant red fruit, cranberry juice, raspberry, caramel, strong stem, Vosne spice, hot cinnamon candy, tree bark and earthy mineral. Fully integrated youthful palate, very finely layered subtle yet bright red fruit, rich and precise, medium acidity, strong mineral accentuated by the strong stem note, noticeable slightly coarse tannins and a medium to long bright red fruit driven finish with stem and cinnamon at the end. Although the fruit is slightly lean, the palate is rich and concentrated which is interesting. It still needs another decade of cellaring as sous bois has not emerged yet and the structure is still quite firm. The most youthful showing of the flight.

Lovely complex spicy fragrance showing everything one would want and hope for in this beauty. The palate was slightly more compact then the nose with firm and lean texture yet offered up pretty spice box character. A good showing, yet not nearly as generous as the 1996 and 1998 served alongside. My guess is this holds for sometime and will be known for its nuance over its depth.

DC/Chicago Wine Dinner Extravaganza (Rosewood Hotel Dining Room - Washington DC): Open for 3-4 hours with a quick double decant, but clearly this also needed more air and/or more time, even if slightly more accessible vs the 1996 in the next glass. Broad array of red berry aromas and flavors with so much whole cluster and so much Vosne spice. Dense, concentrated and almost meaty, but also very firm/ rugged from middle through finish. Very good tonight (92-93 points), but not quite as exciting today as other bottles from this case have performed, so more air and/ or cellar is warranted.

Mid ruby, touch of separation. A bit of nail varnish, furniture polish volatility on the initial pour. A bit herbal, touch of boiler Chinese medicine with the black cherry fruit. Slightly better on palate, with edgy acidity piercing the slightly muddled fruit. Don’t think time or air will help this. Hope it is bottle variation! 5 left in the case bought as a late release from the Domaine.

La Fête de La Paulée in Chicago (Formento's - Chicago IL): Served alongside the 2001. More black cherry and berry vs red red cherry with rich baking spice alongside roasted meat and earth notes. Very powerful, still seemingly backward and holding back on showing its full Vosne charm. Clearly upside from here. There were some significant differences of opinion on this wine.

La Fête de La Paulée: Paired with an 01 DRC RSV, which showed much more expressive. The nose here was a bit dirty and muddled though you can still appreciate the underlying brown spice and black cherry. Palate is subdued relative to the more energetic 2001. Seemed a bit closed down.

Initially, this wine didn't offer much complexity -- however, over the course of the night, and putting some work into it, layers of flavor unfolded (see note below). Always interested in tasting a DRC, but this didn't deliver as much pleasure as other wines this evening.

1993 Red Burgundy Horizontal: This nose is quiet and inexpressive. Pine, mild spice, some dark and woody black cherry fruit. Overall echinacea and herbaceous. Dark, intense, and extracted. It’s detailed and complex, and spending time with the nose you can pull many scents out of it, it’s just not very friendly. On the palate the fruit is tightly wound cranberry. There is good acid and a long finish, but the fruit isn’t deep or rich. Tough.

93 is not a drc vintage. Nose has cinnamon, stems, and spice. Palate lacks sweetness with a bitter aftertaste. It is very earthy and medicinal. Doesnt taste like drc at all. I have to be mean on this wine especially how expensive it is. Drinking off the peak.
Light ruby. Red fruit, Asian spice, and black tea on the nose. The palate offers good depth with flavors of spice and black tea. Improbable concentration. Still quite young. (Bottle number 701)

Very classic Pinot/Burg nose that jumps at you from the glass and gets more complex as it sits in the glass. I was amazed at how it still retains so much of its primary fruit that it still felt a little too early to open this bottle but thoroughly enjoyed it. I think this has great upside and will get better over time and look forward to opening another one in a year or later.

LaTâche Lunch with a Ramonet Starter (Binkley's - Phoenix AZ): Served single blind alongside LaTâche from the '98 and '95 vintages. Spice galore, with lots of meaty, dense fruit. Still very fresh. Very tasty now, with plenty of life going forward. My favorite of the flight for both now and the cellar. Correctly identified all three wines in the flight.

Perhaps I did not get it, or maybe I was the only honest taster in the room that found this wine sharp, tart and overly acidic. Much better on the nose than the palate with its floral, spice and red berry character. The wine was just not that much fun to taste. My Burgundy loving friends assured me, the wine just needed time and food. I am positive they were seduced by the label and price.

Tasted in the cellars of DRC. This was a once in a lifetime visit and the 4 hours we spent at the Domaine were truly a pleasure. I cannot thank our hosts at DRC enough for arranging such a special tour and tasting. Their modesty combined with their passion for the wines are truly remarkable. They remarked that our small group of 9 was the largest non-trade group allowed to visit in recent memory. Again, a real treat. Regarding the 1993 RSV, this wine was quite youthful. Bright red fruit on the complex nose with some earth and spice in the background. Very intense and similar notes on the palate. The wine was a bit cold in the cellar and I would have liked to see where this went over a few hours as it got better and better during our tasting. A very long, powerful finish and I hope to have this again in the future.

Decadence in Au Jardin: Great precision with a nose true to the terroir, great flavors and promise of a wonderful wine - got better with time in the glass; whilst some of the 1993 tend to be a bit rustic at times, the RSV showed its class.

La Paulee Gala (New York, NY): In contrast to the 1993 Grands-Echezeaux, this showed lots of spice and bright fruit, even while clearly and firmly structured and slightly backward. This had some decanter time, which certainly helped, giving the fruit some time to brighten. Like the 1990 RSV also served, this kept getting larger and spicier with more time in glass. Not even close to its peak drinking window.

Tasted at the C&B dinner with A de Villaine 27 Jan 2011. According to ADV '93 vintage had a tough spring with mildew at first due to rain + heatwave. Picked on 20 September.
Alongside Richebourg 1993 (95), RSV was shy on the nose, had more red fruit, good acidity but needs more time. Started to come out with food (beef).

Burgundy Dinner: Pre-Paulee with Zachys (Quince - San Francisco CA): Great Asian spice on nose with lots of red fruit. I don't know how long this was decanted before serving, but it wasn't enough. We decanted this for about 3 hours for a dinner six months ago, and that wasn't enough. Fruit getting more concentrated with more time in glass, spice kept getting bigger as well. I know I have a bunch in the cellar and while I'm sure some will get opened in the interim, I think the drinking window opens in 2020.

Birthday with Vosne Romanee (Boka - Chicago IL): Opened and decanted about 3 hours before serving. Red cherry and black cherry on the nose with intense cooked spices and some oak and cocoa. Same type of fruit on palate, but very intense and brooding, then turning a bit powerful towards the finish as spice opened up more. Served alongside the DRC 90 RSV, we kept debated the relative merits of these two (plus the flight had the also excellent 95 and interesting 73). It kept evolving in glass, not necessarily in a linear manner (vs. the 90 which just kept getting better). But I think there is more substance, dry extract and spice to the 93 so think it a nose ahead of its wonderful 1990 counterpart, forgive the pun.

The relative disappointment of the evening as we caught this one in the big sleep. I thought we might get away with it as others have had good bottles of this recently, but no such luck. Even after an hour or two of decanting, the wine teased and tortured us all night long with flashes of brilliance, only to immediately go into a shell and hide from us. In its brief open stages, it did absolutely scream class with a soaring nose of bright red fruits and an extraordinarily mouth-coatingly sappy mid-palate. Despite occasional glimpses of silk and truffle, this seemed almost more Chambolle than Vosne with the bright red fruit character. Potentially brilliant then, but not tonight. Even at its best it was so primary, I thought I was drinking a 2001. Hold, hold, hold.

WIML90,WA87,WS92 Tasted March 26, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only. Opened and decanted briefly before being returned to bottle for tasting. Tasted in Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glasses. Garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Picking up just a little hint of barnyard on the nose followed by some berries and such. Not giving up a lot for a 12 year wine. Flavors of red cherry and earth. Still a pretty big wall of tannins to be found here. With all due respect to my fellow winos I just don’t get it. Maybe I need some schooling in tasting quality Burgundy but I was expecting an ethereal experience with this wine and I didn’t get it. It seemed a little “hard” to me. I yield to my fellow winos.

Ecclectic Easter Tasting at Asti Trattoria II (Asti Trattoria, Austin, Texas): Clear medium-ruby in color; As Steffen notes this wine smelled like a million $$. Outstandingly complex aromas of truffles, exotic spices and eventually some soy notes. It was a bit clipped in the middle and ended with a long, spicy finish. This bottle was better than the previous bottle. My theory is that the travel and storage on the previous bottle was not kind. [$$$; Gently double-decanted at the table (some bottle sediment); Needed the decant to open up]

Ecclectic Easter Tasting at Asti Trattoria (Asti Trattoria): First 100 point nose I've ever given out. Phenomenal secondary aromas. Upon opening this wine had no nose or finish. After a one hour decant it warmed and opened up. The color was a deep ruby with very little bricking. On the nose there was black cherry and cloves along with a singular mineral component and a slight bit of earthiness. It still had significant tannins. Similar to the other 1993 DRC I tried this wine was fairly austere in style and tried really hard not to be liked. Most people set their wine glass aside with this wine to let it continue to evolve. Eventually at about two hours it had a good period before it became too warm. This bottle was possibly poorly stored before I purchased it.

Hope it is bottle variation! 5 left in the case bought as a late release from the Domaine.

Opened this this wine two hours ahead and decanted in view of many comments indicating it is closed. This paid out. Wonderful nose of roses and dried flowers, grood energy, deep. Vivid with I believe long life ahead.

Magnificent wine that is drinking so well now. This was served blind in a flight of La Tache, and was not out of place - actually drank better than many vintages of LT today. Soft tannins, very long finish, balanced and elegant. Love this wine.

Tasted March 26, 2005 at an offline so brief comments only.
