After an hour of air or so, the wine opened. This wine is lighter on its feet than most 2003s are and is why this wine still has at least another 5 to7 years left in it. Black fruits, tobacco, cedar, dried herbs. A very nice and well made wine that tasted blind would be hard to pick as an '03.

New Opportunities by the Sea; 6/7/2023-6/30/2023 (Alicante - España): First of four. As it is traditional at my home, bottle opened sixteen hours in advance having a slow breath. Bottle has been laying down in my cellar for fifteen years. In spite that plastic envolving its capsule, cork showed moldy and little soaked (pictured). First sniff was pretty reduced smelling something in between drain pipe and horse manure. After this slow, gentle aeration all have changed to cedar, to a punch of macerated red and black berries, to a strawberry bunch, certainly veggie yet mineral too. Effectively masculine yet been a Margaux. On the palate showed a diluted texture but tasty and long at the same time. Maybe a little tired acidity, tamed tannins at an unbalanced alcoholic, smoky, dry finish. That's all. Heat records only in your mind. Prices rocking to high. Nothing spectacular but quite effective. No rush.

'Welcome back Neal' Dinner (Giando, 5 Star Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): Splash decanted. Deep totally opaque red/black colour slightly lightening at the meniscus. Understated but velvety nose of fermented raspberries. Palate is wonderfully velvety, mellow and followed with a super mounting resonance and reverberance. It rose up to a silence-creating element but soured somewhat with extended time in the glass and ended up disappointing. Drank in parallel with the Pontet Canet 2003, which is a league higher.

Beautiful wine with intense aromas. Pyrazines of bell pepper of Cabernet Sauvignon, cola. Mineral even saline on the palate. Long lasting aftertaste.
This 2nd wine of the legendary Chateau Margaux is superb! I always hunt for a lesser vintages because to my experience the gap between the Grand Vin and the 2nd label is minimal in such vintages. Probably due to the fact that in difficult years some of the Grand Vin grapes are declassified and go to 2nd wine blend. 2003 is a very difficult vintage in Bordeaux as in many other wine regions in Europe. But this one is absolutely gorgeous!

Deep to medium garnet red. A little stinky on the nose, with some spices and red berries. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus to full bodied. Power comes through on the palate with cherries, currants and earthy. Medium plus to long and well integrated. Drink till 2022.

Classic Margaux nose of raspberry and mineral notes, but perhaps slightly soft and not as bright. Prior bottle was almost three years ago (July 2014) and this bottle showed a bit better. Full bodied (13% ABV), but more balanced than previously, after being open about two and a half hours ahead of time. Soft and balanced red cherry and raspberry upfront with enough brightness to be interesting, but with enough depth to allow it to feel open and expressive. Mid-body has that wonderfully silky elegance to it that allows the wine to show off fruit and structure to the best effect. Clean transition to the finish where it shows earth notes, vanilla, integrated spices and graphite to go with fine grained tannins. Fells like this wine could continue to improve slightly over the next few years and show well for a few more beyond that.

Best bottle of this vintage so far. The tannins are beginning to resolve with about 3 hours in the decanter. Bright ruby red, perfumed cassis nose with cedar and tobacco. On the palate the fruit stands out with its ripeness and purity, good acidity and decent though not flabbergasting depth and a good finish. Not bad at all.

From 75cl, perfect cork, decanted 45 minutes (two hours would have been much better). This took 3 hours to open up aromatically; until then it was a tight, ripe, concentrated young Bdx blend with evident Merlot (35% apparently) and (of course) deep dark-red fruited ripeness. The more exciting aspects (Margaux!) started coming through at the very end of my last glass – liquorice, exotic spice, incense on the nose and a more rippling, layered mid-palate. The tannins are still quite dry and grippy at the end, so all in all I'd give this another 2-4 years before trying again, and a good decant. 90P

During a merchant tasting. Medium dark ruby. Nose of dried fruit, earth, spices, smoke, tobacco. Medium+ bodied, the heat and power of the vintage is visible here vs. the other Pavillon Rouges in the line up. A bit dry on the finish. While the first wine is sublime and elegant, here on these younger vines and Merlot vines the effect of the hot summer can't fully be hidden.

Much more open and ready to go than the 2005 at this point. This was definitely the riper wine of the two, and you could sense a bit more alcohol on the nose and palate. Silky smooth tannins. Plenty of elegance and finesse in this wine, despite the warm vintage. Well done and in a great place right now.

Very well balanced and integrated. A little graphite and gravel on the somewhat reticent nose- soft tannins. Fruit comes out slightly after 2 hours of air, as well as a touch of vanilla. This has finesse, but agree that it's a bit lean.

Love this wine... Almost more like a Pauillac than a Margaux with classic Pauillac notes of cassis, cedar, graphite, and some green bell pepper. Very elegant wine with some structure / tannin, but the finish has a touch of sweet vanillin. Not overdone like many of the 2003 Left Bank wines from this vintage. Saving my other bottles for a few more years to allow the tannin to soften a bit.

Tuesday Night Double Blind $60+ (Bin 75): Deep crimson, some clarity, dull red rim; yeah, funk, chocolate, cigar, green pepper, Bordeaux, noble, red cherry, raspberry, currant; dusty on the palate, intense, leather, ox blood, long finish, digs a trench down the middle of the palate, saddle leather, lozenge, very gravel driven on the finish, strong tannin, good acid, noble, just a slight prickle on the finish from the ripeness and alcohol; was in Pauillac and called 2003 Laforts de Latour...wrong second label.

I bought this bottle in 2006, and it was the first bottle that I bought with the intention of storing. At the time, we didn't have a cellar and we've moved a few times since we bought this (so that gives you some idea of provenance, as a consequence, I couldn't suggest this bottle is representative of how this wine is supposed to taste). Nevertheless, this holds great sentimental value.
As others have noted, this is not a baby version of the first wine of Margaux; this doesn't have the amazing floral and spiced notes that I associate with that wine. Nevertheless, our bottle was drinking pretty well. It has left behind most of its fruit, and what is left is character and texture. On the nose there are clove and coffee aromas. My wife adds this reminds her of her grandmother's closet (musty, in a comforting way), sweethearts candy and frankincense/myrrh. There is a bit of VA present. On the palate, the acidity is high-toned and still pretty serious, with dusty dried fruits. There is still some gripping tannin on the finish. We enjoyed this for the trip down memory lane.

HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago, IL): Bright cherries...almost a candied cherry tone to it actually. The palate was a bit better than I would have guessed. While the fruit was dense and dark, there was nice floral and earthy notes in there too. A bit outside my comfort zone, but decent.

HDH Bordeaux Auction; 10/31/2014-11/1/2014 (Chicago, IL): From magnum. Definitely some of the confected ripe fruit from the hot vintage, but this is not over the top. The structure and body leaves something to be desired though, as this comes off as a bit soft and unshaped. Ready to drink now.

Much better than the last bottle. Two hours in the decanter and this wine was singing. Typical nose of sweet tobacco, cassis, jasmine. Good backbone, soft entry into palate with black fruits and cassis mid palate, excellent balance, acidity, structure, medium to full bodied but the finish a tad disappointing after the build up.

Too early to drink or otherwise a serious decant is needed. Blackish crimson, nose of sweet tobacco, flowers, creamy cassis and raspberries, the wine is rich but not all together with a hard tannic finish and lacks the typical flowery margaux richness and finesse. Medium bodied to full. I would wait a few years before popping open a new bottle.

Raspberry and leather on the nose. Full bodied and needed a minimum of two hours to open up and finally started to get that Margaux aroma and silkiness at the three hour mark. Good balance in the middle with dusky cherry up front and lots of raspberry mixed in. Vanilla, leather and coffee on the finish. Has a good amount of tannic structure, perhaps more than I was expecting for a 10+ year old bottle. Didn’t have the depth and complexity of the 2000, but this was still a very enjoyable bottle. I think it has at least a year, maybe a bit more before it hits peak. I can see it smoothing out and further integrating with a bit more time.

Occasional dinner group; Bordeaux 2003 plus some extras.: Day 1. Beautiful and smoky bouquet with cassis and some coffee as well. On the palate elegant with cassis, ok acidity and tannin which is still youthful, but also some green bell pepper. Day 2 the wine is still alive and kicking. Elegant and a pleasant bite and good juice, but overall lacking the concentration to be really great. Overall a classical Claret, early maturity now and around 2016/2018 probably at its peak.
All the worries of being out of whack/hot year not true for this wine. It is bit on the darker side compared to other Pavillon Rouges that I've had. You can tell it was a ripe vintage. Extraction levels are high. Much better than the thinner 2002 vintage. Would drink in the next 3+ years.

Wine course 101 - Key grape varieties: During a wine 101 course I gave. Discrete nose with floral tones and spices (cloves). On the palate well structured and still surprisingly young and still a bit closed. Very aromatic and complex though with some aeration showing the typical Margaux aroma profile. Keep for another 2-3 years before opening or decant for 2h.

A relaxing evening with wines and friends (Metropolitan wine cellar, HK): Not sure if its bottle variation, but this bottle had a rather strong display of alcohol, which kinda dimished some of the good showing elements of the wine. First on the nose, typical yet wonderful notes of spring floral, ripe currants, violet, hint of mineral. Texture on the palate was soft and elegant, with coffee, truffle, jammy plum. Medium finish. This wine could still use some cellar time and should have a stronger showing then.

If all 2003's are this good, bring them on- truly opened up after an hour and drank like its father Chateau Margaux. Rich purple and balanced with a tad of a licorice stick, this is a wonderful dinner wine. Scented vanilla laces the cassis creating a spring floral arrangement. This concentrated happy wine brings unexpectedly the pleasure one would expect from its first growth dad. Lovely finish. Eleven more, yeah!

Day one: loving this bdx--bacon fat, wet earth, cassis, oak, wet stones, good balance and decent structure; nice silky mouth feel with a medium body and finish-92 Day two: showing a bit more minerality but otherwise considerably faded from day one; its all just 'fuzzy' somehow-88. This did not hold together on day two the way I would have expected it to; very delicious on day one, faded hard on day two. Probably one to drink in its first 10 years.

For only 5 years in the bottle, it had that great bottle aged funk that you would expect from a much older wine. Beautiful rust orange and crimson red color. It's still holdng quite a bit of fruit flavors and iss really well balanced with the earthiness. This has all the elegance and finesse of the first bottling from Ch Margaux, with out the crazy price tag.

Dark, showing some age already.Muted nose shows hints of coffee, unripe dark fruits, and mint verging on herbaceousness. Similar on the palate. A bit flat and stale, with hot alcohol and mild tannins that emerge on the finish. Only hints of Margaux elegance, lacking freshness. This already has the profile of a 15-year old Bordeaux, probably not destined for long-term cellaring. Disappointing.

A surprisingly lush and approachable wine. Notes of smokey oak dominate the nose at first and then give way to cedar and floral notes tinged with pinesap and some ground coffee. Lot of juicy blackberry and plum interplay with licorice and mineral on the rather round and lush palate. This is an easy friendly drink that does pack some structure. That said, the concentration here is not on the level of some other 2003 Bordeaux. Still, a very fine effort for a 2nd wine.

Powerful plum and blackberry. Cigar box, spice, leather, cassis, and....finished it off before it gave up the rest of its secrets. Drinking beautifully and should age well for many years. 2003 Bordeaux (Mouton, Haut Brion, Cos, Ducru, Trotanoy, Lynch, many others): Dark red color. The nose is closed, giving only hints of red fruit, tobacco, and fresh herbs. This has a nice attack of red fruit, licorice, and earth, but quickly falls away finishing with an odd lemony acidic finish. I expected more from this wine.
