A total stunner and certainly a wonderful Champagne, the 1996 Brut Millésime delivers classy baked apples, citrus zest and sweet brioche. The minerality is rather forward and expressive, but still the fruit is speaking up a bit louder. The palate adds to the nose in a very nice way with a velvety and silky approach. Golden yellow with a subdued effervescence. Quite a citrus aroma with an edge of yeast. 'Big' feel on the palate - acidic apple pie, hints of yeast again, but not especially complex. Dies out on the palate after 10 seconds or so, leaving quite a dry sensation. Interesting, lacks a little finesse, but thoroughly enjoyable.

Very yellow color and only a slight mousse left. Very (too much) rich in both nose and mouth. It tries to much to please at the cost of finesse and minerality. Baked apples, dough, yeast and lots of acid. Short aftertaste.

Godt modne epler, søt bakst, og litt krydder (kardemomme, vanilje).

Second bottle since last note. Both were showstoppers. This one clearly The best wine with the most impressive palate impact on a table with some West Coast syrahs and a Rhone. Described as powerful, but not in the sense of alcoholic; rather in a sense of richness, palate impact. The cuvee has no pinot meunier and favors chardonnay by a touch. This wine reflects the chardonnay - a touch of toast. To me, not a hint of the pinot noir - yet. Just might overwhelm great 1996's in a more elegant style like the Dom.
Well stored, this is very much in the window, but will keep.

One of the two bottles was fresher and more vibrant, and the cork was in pristine condition. The wine had a very strong acidic backbone, with ample fruit and great length and balance. This could have been cellared for another 10 years, but was drinking beautifully. Yeasty, toasted brioche and a little leesy. My style of Champagne!

A perplexing champagne. The two bottles I've had in the last year were clearly much younger. This bottle is in the window. Quite gold in color, white flowers, maybe a touch of orange peel, and a certain earthiness on the nose. Creamy rich toasty across the palate. Seems to have reached the point where it is more wine than champagne - bubbles subside quite quickly. Above all, plenty rich.

91+ - From mag - Quite balanced with a toasty nose and dried apple flavors ending with acidity and an interesting smoke note. After the bottle was open for a while it opened up and the flavors integrated. Not in my top tier of '96 Champagnes (which I adore!) but certainly quite a good bottle. Hard to say on further aging as I have not had this from mag before but it was definitely a teenager and should continue to improve for some time. Thumbs up from the wine geek crowd on this one.

I'm not sure if this was an off bottle or what (tasted from Magnum), but this champagne was extremely lean, tart, acidic, and just unpleasant to drink. The was sort of a sour-citrus aspect to it. Didn't pour it down the sink but it was tempting. I hope that it was just this bottle, because I've got a few mags tucked away. I'll wait a year or two, open another one and cross my fingers. Didn't seem to be a storage issue, judging from the characteristics of what it was like.

Medium-deep gold with definite aged impression. A small stream of beautifully fine bubbles. A powerful impression of oxides/orange in a bouquet that is complex. Notes that I made throughout the couple of hours open include spices, musk, prune, raisin, autolytic notes of brioche. Initial palate impression is that of a broad and deep wine with the oxidative notes of orange, intermingling with the spice and pruney notes of mature pinot noir. This then slightly narrows and lengthens as the musky and creamily autolytic chardonnay gets going. The finish is concentrated but a little restrained as if the chardonnay elements are only just beginning to mature. Throughout this quite full-bodied and gently rounded wine is a very firm, but quite well integrated spine of '96 acidity. It would be remiss to say that this lends elegance, more that it stops the wine getting out of control. Drunk by itself the oxidative notes are perhaps a little too dominant, but with food (in this case foie gras paté interspersed with summer truffle on toasted brioche) the chardonnay element is allowed to reign free and the wine does show really beautifully. A really good example of the Gosset style. Burly, rich, complex and powerful wines designed for food.
For me this wine is in a state of maturity and I will be drinking the other two bottles I have within the next year or two as it seems to be following the '96 pattern of pinot noir elements becoming too oxidative before the chardonnay has a chance to blossom (assuming that the first of the remaining bottles shows the same). This wine is probably in as perfect a state of balance as it will ever be. A wine of great complexity and pleasure with food, but time to drink.

Cork now straight. Pale straw. Some large bubbles and then a faint stream of very small ones, persistent but not vigorous. Just the right mix between youthful freshness and the more biscuity flavours of early maturity. Elegance, poise and freshness disguising the weight that's undoubtably there. A creamy texture balanced by fine acidity. Seamless and complete. Gorgeous. *****

This was ourfirst Gosset, and we were exteremely impressed. A thoroughly deliciious Champagne. great without food. Nice gold color, nose was of toast. In the mouth: nutty, toast, and a bit of lemon on the long finish. Incredibly smooth, like caramel. Tiny, lively bubbles, but I think they may have faded a bit. If I had more (which I wish we did!), I'd drink it soon. Overall, we loved it.

An outstanding Champagne, showing lots of acidity and potential for aging. I've had some of these which were in an accelerated state with less bubbles and pressure, and somewhat questionable corks, but this one was great...I really like 96 in Champagne and I really think Gosset did an exceptional job this year...It's hard to keep my hands off of them.

Is something wrong with this? Tart and unpleasant--lean, lemony and tart, with a hint of caramel and nuttiness. Upstaged by a bottle of the Gosset NV Brut.

While the effervescence is fading a little, the wine was stunning. Toasty, teasty, leesy, but with bright fruit and delightful acidity. An excellent wine.

Toasty, yeasty, bready, in a very incisive bottle of champagne. More right down Boadway than mouth filling. Plenty of citrusy acid still present

French Bakery BYO Champagne/White Burgundy Lobster Dinner; 7/14/2008-7/17/2008 (The French Bakery, 1023 Kane Concourse, Bay Harbor Islands, Florida): July 17th, Bob Muraro's wine Best in flight vs 96 Pol Roger Winston Churchill, 9-1/2 vs 6-1/2. To my taste I thought the Gosset, and the 96 Pol roger Winston churchill to be very similar in quality and taste. Deirdre's comment - PALATE!!!. Craig said My idea of the PERFECT Champagne.Carlos thought it the COTN(ChampagneOTN), its color-clear, straw, gold, nose of sweet sugar, and yeasty long finish, a complex Champagne.
Danny, Jrean Marc, David, Greg, Lee, Carlos, Craig, and Deirdre, and I believe Bob H liked it over the Pol Roger.

Gorgeous, toasty, soft, sweet with ripe acidity. Drinking now, but could use a few more years of cellaring.

Great, very youthful '96. Intense, balanced, complex. Loaded with ripe acidity and mineral notes. A hint of toast and lots of citrus on the palate. Very long, building finish. This should age beautifully.

Not giving much on nose
Very tight acidity, initially some lemon and peach on attack, medium to full body, nice weight
Finish shows a brief moment of maturity but closes as it starts, with mainly acidity. Needs at least a decade

At Lavinia in Paris - very nice vintage champagne. The style is fruity and rather straightforward although it remains elegant and perfectly balanced. Perfect to drink right now but it can definitely wait and I'd like to try it again in 5 years.

Consumed at Decos Restaurant (San Diego). Bottle brought from the personal cellar of Ken Johnson. Light straw with a beautiful brisk tiny bead. Clean nose, showing intense bread dough, citrus and hazelnut. Medium-bodied on the palate, with good crisp acidity, a creamy texture and similar flavors as for the nose. Long, smooth finish. Beautiful!
