Light translucent ruby. Lifted and focused nose of raspberry, strawberry, dried herbs and spice. Aromas a ringer for basic CdP. Palate is light-to-medium bodied. In an elegant style - fruit is very light on its feet. Good balancing acidic structure. Medium finish.

Three tasters and we all got the same flavor: grapefruit. Not even sure how that is possible but it was a fun treat. GOing to try it again blinded with some other grenache and CdP and see if we can pick it out.

Brick red in color. 15.3% ABV. Figs, pepper, plums and fresh tomatoes on the nose. Raspberry, kirsch, asian spices, strawberry, tea, garrigue and leather on the palate. This wine appears to be fully evolved. Since I tried my first bottle of this almost five years ago I still think this about as close to Châteauneuf-du-Pape as California Grenache can get. Drink over the next year or so.

I don't remember much about this bottle from last week. I had it over two nights with a couple of different meals. It was nice. Nothing out of sync. Good mountain fruit. Need to remember to get more. Certainly this is not going to get any better.

Drinking very well right now... deceanted about 45 mins, lots of pepper and spice on the nose, red fruit, strawberry, cherry. initially a touch flabby but the acidity seemed to come out with additional air. Surprisingly well balanced and no trace of heat despite the 15.2% abv..

Dinner with xhoser (billhike's): Deep ruby red color. Cherry, red currant and spice notes dominate the bouquet; shows a bit of heat though too. The palate follows the bouquet, with red fruit, spice, cherry and pepper flavors. Nice.

Brought to dinner with xhoser and the locals at Bill's house. This was decanted for 30 minutes prior to leaving the house, so it had been opened approximately an hour and a half by the time it was poured. I tried a sip upon arriving so that I could follow it through the evening. Very surprised at how open it was upon first pour, and it continued to open during the evening. Wonderful nose of red and black fruits and black pepper. I do not find the pepper overpowering as some others have indicated. This clearly is not for everybody, but I loved it last night. Best bottle yet, with one to go. I think I will hold for another year just to see what happens.

Quick TN: This is my 3rd bottle and it had a killer nose - ripe raspberries and some pepper with a bit of funk. But once in the mouth it was a big, hot mess. Was hoping for more given the improvement noted with my second bottle as compared with the first.

Quick TN. My first bottle of this since 2008 and time has certainly helped this wine. Slightly candied strawberries are the predominant fruit flavor, supported by freshly ground black pepper and menthol/eucalyptus. If tasted blind, I would have thought it a lighter version of a Thackrey Orion. Great wine with grilled burgers on a Friday night, post martini.

Gretna Green, Outpost, Saxum, Jonata: Light ruby in color. The nose was very nice with strawberries, raspberry kool-aid and a slight warm, musty funk that was very nice. On the palate, it was nice, but lagged behind. An upfront attack of raspberries was good. The mid-palate was hollow. Then the finish was just ok. A fair amount of heat that never really went away. It went well with roasted vegetables and rice. Good if not great.

This just keeps getting better. Popped and poured tonight. This bottle was still very dark purple showing no visible signs of age. Wonder about some bottle variation since my last bottle was bricking. Beautiful red and black fruits. Pepper notes still present but not as prevalent.

Mrbuzz had this one right -- black pepper galore. It is almost as if someone held a pepper mill over the glass and gave it a few turns. For me, it was simply too much -- the black pepper notes on the nose overwhelmed what seemed to be some delicate nuances of lavendar and flowers underneath. On the palate, the pepper almost burned, and obscured notes of raspberry and white chocolate. Fairly tannic. I can see how some would like this - not to my palate.

15.3% alcohol. Medium ruby red. An expressive, herbal, red fruit nose. Cherries, rasberries, forest floor and herbal flavors. Well balanced, good acid backbone. Lingering aftertaste.
I first tasted this wine several years back and was frankly unimpressed. Very light, thin and closed. Little sensory interest of any kind. This wine has filled out and grown up nicely. Still subtle, but very pleasing.

Decent enough wine, but not what I prefer in a Grenache. Was very light colored, and the nose and palate both had distinct notes of ruby red grapefruit. May have been an interesting rosé, but kind of fell short for what it was. (PE: 80)

If you like black pepper....you will LOVE this wine! Again, as I have stated before....this is CdP meets Ca. Pinot Noir! Very Ca. in fruit....raspberry, cherry, wildberry.....little cocktail fume, but I think the earth tones, spice, and sweet fruit work well with it. But you have to be ready for the style.....or it might throw you. This is Ca. Grenache at its peppery best! Fun drink!

Popped and poured, but still needs time to open in the glass. The color of this is starting to turn to a brickish orange, showing visual signs of age. The nose really showed some sweet red and black fruits, with no hint of alcohol as others have indicated. This bottle was showing better acidity than my last bottle, which was more viscous and jammy. I don't know if it was bottle variation or if the almost two years has been kind. I'm in no hurry to drink the remaining bottles.

After 45 min decant and 15 of that in the fridge to cool the temp. I was still disappointed at the alcohol on the finish. The nose was full of strawberry, pepper, and flowers. Light to slightly medium bodied mouthfeel that showed clean fruit. Extended airtime helped with the finish. Hold.

High octane grenache here... I think the alcohol needs to pipe down some (as it did at the end of the bottle). Super ripe strawberries and cinnamon stick abound on the nose and palate. Slight heat on the finish initially worked its way out by the end. Looks to need another 1-3 years of resting to really hit its stride.

Nothing like I expected. Color was brick red and fairly light. The nose had distinct floral notes - lavender came to mind right away. The floral notes carried through on the palate, where it was a fantastic blend of raspberry, cherry, lavendar and possibly rose petals. Very interesting and complex. Nose of pepper, bramble, cinnamon, strawberry, and at times alcohol, with a kirsch, pepper and black cherry core on the palate with notes of sassafras, tea, and orange peel. Heat in places, but mitigated by serving at cellar temp. Yes I plagiarized some of this note from others below. I'm not noticing the structure as much as 6 months ago. 89-90, and as a near term drinker I will stick to my previous note -- a little less heat and a little more depth and I might love this. See-through black cherry, old Zin in color. Dusty black pepper, cherry/raspberry puree, sarsaparilla nose. Again....CdP meets Cali Pinot!!! Med bodied in the mouth, yet loaded with flavor. This is all about fresh crushed raspberry/black cherry juice, dusted with black pepper! Great fresh wild berry fruit, mixed well with the pepper, citrus acidity, herbal florals, as well as some earthness. Not as rich and funky as before....but the flavors are killer...and the structure is there for many many more years. Very unique Grenache; not had anything like it. I need to contain myself....would love to see what this wine tastes like in 10+years!

Underwhelming. Not the darkest of wines in the glass, the visual carried through on the nose and palate. Light-bodied and somewhat simple. Strawberry, with almost a candied essence. I typically love Outpost wines - I think TRB does a great job with Zinfandel and Cabernet - but this is just not what I'd expect from this producer.

Grenache y Mas Grenache-The Great CA Grenache-off (Cafe Cortadito): I really love this wine. I was first wowed by it out of barrel a couple of years ago and haven't tried it since, so this was much anticipated. There were no disappointments. It had wonderful, complex floral aromatics with some white pepper that may be site specific to Outpost as I find it in their aged Zins. The wine is showing admirable structure, which bodes well for the future, but obscures some of the fruit. The palate is nonetheless highly complex with orange peel and black tea. It clamps down on the finish pretty tight. Patience will be rewarded here. This is a beauty.

This is an interesting and complex wine. Like others have said, it looks, feels and tastes like a big california Pinot. It is medium cherry translucent in color. The nose is initially restrained and has a bit of the rubber aroma typical of Cali Pinot. The palate is tight with a good bit of acid and tannin. Cherry fruit, cola, a bit of spice in the mouth. The fruit is hidden behind the monster, all very restrained. Only over some time with air, does the spice start to emerge. I am not sure it will ever be fruit forward. It is a really nice example of grenache made with a European point of view.

as expected medium to light ruby red in color. a rather expressive floral nose of "Penzeys" herbes de provence. medium bodied, good texture, licorice, black raspberry, mildly gamey with a touch of loam. this finishes a tad sweet but seems to last for :30+. this will be interesting to follow. 50+5+14+16+7=92+

I really enjoyed this on day 2 as it settled even as that brought some extending tannins. Day one was like other notes indicate (pepper factory!) and quite interesting if extreme. While this is not showing any heat whatsoever today and seems to be performing, even right off the truck, better than the 04, a little less burn and a little more glyceral fruit -- just a little -- would take this to the next level. Scores from 87? to 91+ depending on the hour and my mood.

This wine was an epiphany when I tasted it from barrel a year or so ago. Have been highly anticipating the release of this wine....and now, I have it! The first thing I notice is the color....lighter, rustic cherry in color. Looks like a Ca. Pinot(ROAR came to mind). The nose...again, Pinot? Fresh wild berry, raspberry, cherry fruit....BUT....there it is....the black pepper...KICKS IT IN YOUR FACE! Beautiful black(not white like the Zins) pepper waves over the juicy fresh crushed fruit. Still tight with citrus(oranges) acidity....but the fruit is juicy, and does well. Wonderful herb florals, Xmas spice, smoked cinnamon sticks, dried rose florals, dusty dirt, some funk too. But...the pepper makes it, imo. This is like a Ca. Pinot, mixed with CdP! Killer! It does need time though...so, I took the bullet...wait at least 6 mos for optimal pleasure. This is ++pts

Barrel sample. Some bright red fruits on the nose are overwhelmed by freshly-ground black pepper, with some more subtle, spicy herbal (stemmy?) smells. Plenty of ripe red and black fruits, and lots more pepper on the palate, a bit tannic. The wine has a delicate, silky pinot-like structure that i like very much, but at the moment it's hard to get many nuances beneath all the black pepper. Tasted blind.

Off the Beaten Path in Napa with Slava and Jimmy (Napa, CA): Really interesting. Totally different from the Zin and Cab, and different from any other Outpost. This is apparently made in a "Burgundian" style, and is a lighter wine. Fruit, but also some more savory elements in this.

Red and black fruits along with some black pepper and some floral notes. The mouthfeel was almost jammy. I did not detect any heat as others have mentioned. I'll hold off for a couple of years before touching another.

Although there was a significant amount of heat, the fruit dominated, and made this an incredible experience!!!

Spry, bright and lighter than I remember, a bit brown in the glass, especially after the Audellsa Zephyr's that proceeded these...Actually had the last 1/2 of the second bottle a day or two after and seemed to have put on weight...Bright floral and more grenache like

Light to medium bodied. Each glass brought a different aroma/flavor profile.
If wine could just melt in your mouth, this would be it. Very enjoyable.

Delicious, rasberry with kircsch, tobacco, and cedar box. Weirdly brown color, but opened up and will be better in time. Probably garner a 92-93 rating in another year.

Great alternative to pinot with bold fish dishes. Nice nose upon opening with rounded flavors. Was evolving and improving during meal but with 4 consuming didn't reach potential before it was too late.

Ruby red, quite pretty in the glass with a huge nose of flora....a bit light at first but really opened into a berry, bright delivery of ripe fruit with structure acidity and tannins that seem to indicate that this will integrate into great status in 2 more years or so

as expected medium to light ruby red in color. a rather expressive floral nose of "Penzeys" herbes de provence. medium bodied, good texture, licorice, black raspberry, mildly gamey with a touch of loam. this finishes a tad sweet but seems to last for :30+. this will be interesting to follow.

The Wines of Thomas Rivers Brown (Orange County, CA): Barrel sample. Nose of black cherries and pepper. On the palate, concentrated notes of crushed black and red fruits, pepper, and garrigue. 88-89 points.
