Still too young. Just ok at this stage. Just seemed slow to evolve. Different beast to the 2013 which was much more open and elegant. Will it develop ? How long to wait ?

eleven-vintage Ata Rangi vertical (K&L Redwood City): dark ruby in the glass, it has a very complex nose with red and blue fruit interwoven with roses and violets; bottom notes of leather and damp earth lace the spice and herbal aromas. round, supple and extremely layered in the mouth, there is a remarkable purity to the fruit flavours as the complexities develop mid-palate. very good acidity and polished tannins. remarkable grand cru-like persistence.
delightful as it is, i think it can still improve; it’s still somewhat primary with a structure that has not yet fully integrated. it’s sure to go for another decade easily. 25% whole cluster, 35% new oak for eleven months

Brief note. Under screwcap. Primary crimson colour. Red and black cherries, damp earth, bramble, grilled smoky game and spices. Savoury and dry. Silky texture. Fine tannins. Persistent, bright acidity. A little tight, closed and ungiving. Give it until 2025+. For me, at present, not as good as the pair of top vintages - 2013 and 2015, the best in the decade - around it. At present, 92+.

When first opened, there was dark cherry and some earthy notes. After 90 minutes in decanter and evolving over a 3 hours period, this wine became quite savoury. Maintaining its earthiness, had hints of smoked bacon, charcuterie and mushrooms. Tannins were very supple and subtle with good acid structure. Had depth and complexity, certainly not linear, Finish was excellent, possessed a firmness with a dose of cherry notes for good measure.
Drink now or 4+ years.

Tasted during webinar hosted by The Wine Society, UK, featuring Mackenzie Paton, daughter of the founders of Ata Rangi. Dark plum colour. The nose shows deep red berry fruits, vanilla, violets and earthiness. The palate is rich and full, with a distinctly youthful feel suggesting this wine is perhaps not yet at its peak and will surely have long potential, maybe 5-10 years. It's plummy and warming, complex, yet well balanced. Delicious. Huge potential, I think will get even better with a bit more time.

Friday night casual drinks in the neighbourhood. Tasted blind. Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs. Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of scented wood oak, saline and stony minerality, brambly dark fruits, some florals, and dried meat with more air. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), chewy medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark spice, dark red cherries, dark red plum, brambles, earthy stony minerality. Long finish. Very good quality. Solid stuff. New World but balanced and nicely aged. Just lacks some oomph and excitement towards the back-palate. I was guessing 2009/2010 NZ Pinot Noir maybe Felton Road from Central Otago? Or Dry River from Martinborough? Tastes a bit older than 2014 would suggest. Drink and enjoy over the next 4-5 years. Doesn't need much more than that. Screw-cap.

Unscrew and pour, consumed over 2 hours. Nose: Medium-plus expressiveness, raspberry, cinnamon, iron, and bacon fat with hints of smoke and cocoa powder. Palate: Medium bodied, sweet red fruit - raspberry and cherry - and Asian spice attack, a little hint of bacon fat smooths over the spice through the mid-palate, flavors persist nicely thru the back-end where earthiness and minerals appear. Finish: Medium length, 30-45 seconds, showing spicy dark red fruit, earth and minerals.

Concentrated all in one place, the aromas of this wine flash of red fruit, baking spices and mushrooms. Medium (+) body with a lot of density and good stuff going on. Long finish - fruit-driven with dashes of wet soil. A Pinot that could easily be drunk solo, but I usually see myself with a cigar in one hand and this gem in the other just chillin' in front of a cottage house somewhere in the middle of the Alps.

Big, rich, concentrated brambly dark berry and ripe black cherry fruit. Fresh, not stewed, but concentrated. Good acidity although I'm guessing some tartaric acid added in, but that aspect is subtle. Very ripe, modern Chambolle in a sense. Could use a bit more structure, but let's see how it matures. Will need a decade at least.

Flawless extraction of the fruit- cherries and raspberries. Hints of hibiscus, eucalyptus and mint. Body is mineral and full of black cherries with stems. Finish holds minerality and hints of coffee and farmyard. Quality is high, wine is bit reserved for this moment. After drinking it during 4 hrs it is sure that the wine is good as some 1er Cru but really cannot be a 99 points, even a 94-95 wine from Bob Campbell. Pity.
Pnp, deep ruby in color, nose is a resemblance of a 1er Cru Chambolle Musigny, red fruits and spice, nothing dominating but in fine balance. On palate, oak spice, hawthorn and sweetness exploded, if there is a bit more acidity, it would just be perfect. Very fine tannin and medium finish, this is a serious challenge to Burgundy's 1er Cru.

The bouquet was gorgeous with a mix of generous fruit and grounding earth tones, creating a display of ripe strawberry, cherry and crushed blueberry, which gave way to peppermint, crushed stone, dusty spices and undergrowth. On the palate, I found a vibrant expression of red and blueberry fruits with silky textures offset by brisk acidity and sweet herbal tones. It finished long and saturating to the senses with spice, minerals, tart cherry--there's that peppermint again--and hints of youthful tannin.
At the moment, the real showpiece here is the bouquet, yet I have no doubt that as the palate fleshes out in the cellar, that this will be an incredible Pinot from start to finish.

New Zealand Pinot Noir Tasting (Oinoscent): At first, if felt lighter next to Greywacke, but with more time it kept growing. There is a bright red fruit core, ripe and fresh, brilliant use of oak, nutty. Much spicier in the palate, oakier (compared to Greywacke), ripe red fruit again, the acidity is more pronounced, this is definately a step up in quality, density and complexity. Long finish, a wine to keep

Complex nose of red and dark fruit, mineral and earthy with a thin layer of oak and smoke. Medium body with med+ acidity, fine grained tannins, tart fruit, earthy and mineral, the oak/smokey element is slightly more pronounced now and needs some more time. Mouthcoating depth of flavour with good balance and ling finish thats a very good wine that needs some time to improve but its already enjoyable. 93+

After a while the wine needs some coaxing to Bring out more. The nose seems flat and restrained.

Complex secondary notes start to emerge. Mushrooms. Dried meat.
On the palate red fruits and still tannins left. I believe this can go for a few more years

I believe it will get much better in 5-10 years, it’s just too young too enjoy it now for a full potential.

Maybe an off bottle or just too young. Good. Some complexity. But not knocking my socks off.

WOW! Have every vintage of this wine since 2009 and never fails to make me feel like all is well in the world, opened a 2014 based on the ratings and a rare hot sunny bank holiday , grilled chicken , salad and Ata Rangi , a very happy contented man

After drinking it during 4 hrs it is sure that the wine is good as some 1er Cru but really cannot be a 99 points, even a 94-95 wine from Bob Campbell. Pity.
GTMD鲍勃坎贝尔,打你妹的99分啊,喝了四个小时,越来越酸,并没有变复杂,顶多是伯恩一级园的水平。

Quite pure on the nose with notes of red and dark fruit, spices, crushed stones. On the palate also quite spicy and mineral, nice crunchy fruit, fresh with good grip. Not overly generous. Nice, vinrant finish. 90-91+

Weekly tasting group RWP #248: New Zealand (@ RW): See my tasting note of 3 weeks ago. Today’s note is almost a copy, except for the fact that this time I wrote down the tannin has a good bite, so the wine can age for a few years.

Weekly tasting group RWP #246: 4 x 3 ( Bordeaux/Rhône/New World) (@ RW): Concentrated bouquet with red and dark fruits, minerals and spices. On the palate juicy red berries, some metal, chocolate, cherries, earthy impressions and some bitterness in the finish. Beautiful and complex, concentrated wine. 90 - 91

Still in a primary phase, but clearly excellent. Tasted alongside 2011 and 2008 (the older the better!) 14%, screwcap.

Complex, rich and velvety. Plenty of plum, berry and spice. Great volume and texture. Really builds through the palate and fans out on the finish. Classy juice.
