Served at Confrerie event. Most controversial wine of the event. Friend noted scents of smoked bonito. Sous bois, tobacco, complex, better with air. 90-91 for me, many others said Yuch. Needs food and patience when drinking.

Very firm tannins for wine now 24 years old. Disappointing in that aspect, and very different than the first two bottles. Notes of earth floor and dark berry. The tannins disappointingly overwhelm the notes.

A little wild and funky on opening, but this settles down quickly to reveal a complex nose of red currants, cherry and pomegranate with a strong savoury component of blood and bone, iron, earthiness and gamey meatiness. Good acidity on the palate, grippy tannins and fairly silky. Medium weight. Finished off the last glass a day later and it was more settled and integrated than day one. Such a lovely Pommard and one I suspect has a good couple of decades left in the tank.

Cork was in great shape. Poured the glass and let us sit for ten minutes. A bit of the classic burgundy smell. Taste was still acidic, some tannins, well integrated, young red berries, a solid lingering aftertaste . I think it is at its peak, or near. A great wine and I wish I had more . I had it with a sautéed crispy skin salmon. Perfect.

Exceptional, so pleasurable to drink. Drinking much better than three years ago, the acid is softer. Bright cherry nose, with notes of leather, vanilla and a hint of tobacco. A gripping quality. 92-93.

2 hours in the glass was sufficient to open this wine up. A feminine, well balanced wine with some up front fruit. Balance is impeccable and finish is good. These are in or near prime. This should age well for a couple more decades with ease. Still no tertiary notes. Revisit 2024

Tasted blind: Deeply colored; profound purity on the nose and palate with huge, extracted, rich dark Pinot goodness; ripe tannins and acid backbone there but smothered by the rich fruit. Totally lacking in finesse but if you love great Pinot and balanced power and richness, this will steal your heart. Will probably last an eternity. A WOW wine and totally outclassed a simpler village Pommard from Olivier Leflaive tasted alongside. Glad to try someone else’s knowing I have 5 or 6 in the cellar.

First bottle from Gaunoux; very good; definitely old school style; the nose was full of forest floor, tobacco, underlying red fruits, hints of floral notes, some menthol. The nose really kept evolving over about 2 hours. The palate is structured and rustic in style, but structure is not overwhelming and is reasonably buffered by the fruit and flavors. The finish is a bit tight/short without food, but with lamb chops it stretches out. It is really quite a lovely wine and seems to still have some upside from here, though the fruit is certainly fading and its becoming a more earth driven wine.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Wines; 12/24/2020-12/25/2020 (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Medium dark red plus color, 2mm clear edge. PNP, drank 2 glass over 3 hours. This took some time to come out of its shell. Dried earth, oozing iron and minerals, dried cherry and sauvage on the nose. As this opens the dark fruit moves more forward and shows blackberry and black cherry notes. The palate has a rustic charm and depth; tons of minerals and iron, blood meal, grainy tannins, and medium length. This slowly shows more fruit, black raspberry and black cherry. Probably lost a step the next day when we finished it up.

Opened and decanted 3 hours before dinner. The wine was medium ruby in colour and still very youthful. The nose revealed the wine’s age with light tertiary mushroom aroma and a mix of cool red fruit. The palate was fresh with hints of forest floor, refreshing acidity, red berry fruit, good intensity, and a medium length finish. A very good red burgundy of balance and subtle power, from a producer renowned for long living wines. This lives up to expectations. 13.5% alcohol.

First bottle from my cellar. Definitely needs more time to soften, with acid that still completely dominates. Crazy that this 21 year old burg is still very early, probably IMO not even in the drinking window! To be on the safe side, I will wait at least 5 more years to have the next bottle. Great structure, gripping with a long finish. Notes of blackberry, leather with a beautiful long finish.

Les Deux 2018 (Chez Gill): This btl seemed slightly off, maybe a little oxidized. Nose showed some mature black fruit and plum--slightly pruney, with loads of wet earth. I missed a bit of the Pommard rusticity on the palate: good acidity, but lacking some structure.

Great lift and perfume as is the want of the vintage. There's a core of cherry fruit/ It has a hint of earth and loads of mineral. The pallet has good flesh and it is a wine of muscle and authority without sacrificing element of beauty. Drinking really nicely now but stacked for future development.

First impression on the colour is; “full maturity”, which is a misperception (Knowing the wines of Alexander Gaunoux; these wines require very long cellaring). The nose is intense, leather, dark berries, cedar. Very intense and it opens up nicely after 1-2 hours in the glass. In the mouth a perfect balance of acidity and sweetness. After some hours a nice complexity. Classic-style Pommard. This is a wine for food. Drink now or keep in the cellar for your children to enjoy! 90+

Open 24 hours. My dad this bought a case and decided we should scout out a bottle. The nose lets you know the score: this is not open for business, but this is really classic and there is a lot waiting to come out. Aromas of black cherry, cherry, and blackberry along side earth, stones, stems, sauvage and meat. There are some dark florals in there as well. All of these are clearly cordoned off behind a lot of structure. With time some sweet red fruits and red spices start to peek out, but only peek. The nose has so much poise and clarity to it - it's really my style. The palate is very similar to the nose, and it's here we find out that the structure is a lot of acid, combined with very fine tannins. The palate is more red fruits and stones, with some spice, and is almost showing some sweetness. Again, this is very well focused with good flavor intensity, but a lightness and clarity. This almost feels more like a Barolo than a Red Burgundy to me. The finish carries on from the palate - serious acid carrying red fruits along with spices stones and minerals. Good length. I think this could be superb with 10 years. Nose - 4.5-5+/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 16-17+/20 (with 17.5/20) potential.

They don't make 'em like they used to (New York City, NY): Quite unenjoyable at the moment, this is tough as nails. The nose throws a bit of red fruited acidity and a slight touch of dirt, but that's all you're getting. The tannins on the palate are the headline here... and there's a huge wall of them to smash through. Plenty of acid, and there are nascent signs of fruit waiting to emerge. Totally shut down; this needs lots more time.

Burghound says wait until 2019. I guess I wish I had, although it was pretty special after sitting in my glass (popped and poured, no decant) for two hours. The nose really has a lot of promise that the taste doesn't follow through on at this point, especially with minimal air.
Hate to rate it but I would give it better than the 87 average I guess, so 90 but really could use a four hour decant or ten more years. Nose was outstanding for me. Have two more and will wait.

Decanted for an hour. Very tight and the nose improved some over that hour. It opened up a bit more while we drank it over the subsequent hour but it was still muted and frankly disappointing. Have a few more and will wait a couple more years but am concerned they may not evolve enough to make me happy with this purchase. Don't want to work this hard to enjoy a $100 wine.

Bt decanted for an hr, clear ruby with high tone red fruit, bit vanilla cream nose. Slightly rustic in mouth, dry tannin, very light hint of spice but not much fruit surprisingly. De Montille's Epenots seems better. I shall pass Pommard.

Very, very tight (almost muted to begin with) aromas of bright cherry, cedar, sandalwood and distinct soil tones slowly come to the forefront. With the aromas/flavors as compressed as they are at present, I would be hesitant to try another bottle in the near future. Good fruit in the reserve, just needs quite a bit of time. Ends with a touch of dusty tannin.

Decanted for 2 hours, recorked for an hour, then reopened. Very open and ever changing in the glass. Some animal, lots of fruit, a little (too) plummy. Developed nose of smoke after a while but this faded away. An experience.

Well balanced and surprisingly open. Sweet cherry and brambly fruits on the nose and the palate, with integrated, fine-grained tannins. A touch of cinammon. This isn't quite as deep or complex as I expected, but I suspect this is still holding something in reserve. I'll give it another few years before opening another bottle. Promising and tasty -- but with room for improvement.
The 2nd of 3 bottles. We drank the first bottle too soon after opening it, and even after a few hours it was still closed. As others have noted, this 15 year old still takes at least 4 hours to open up and reveal its beauty. Once it does, it has a rich, heady, perfumed nose of cherry, strawberry and cranberry, earth and leather. Ruby coloured with slight orange/brown bricking. Superb depth of flavour, and a loooong tangy, finish. It gets in your pores and lingers on your senses for ages. Be patient with this, and it's a real winner.
France 2013 - Côte d'Or; 4/20/2013-4/23/2013 (Beaune): Rustic and funky nose at first but that blew off revealing underlying notes of iron and ripe (almost roasted) cherries. Decently structured with solid acidity and finer tannins but this seems more forward than the bottle I had last year at the Domaine, which was fresher, less ripe/roasted, and much more enjoyable. Still a decent drink but the softness and roasted character of this bottle is a bit concerning to me.

This needs a serious decanting to show well now, I'd give it a good five hours. Open first opening, the wine was unyielding so I left it to sit until dinner. I was impressed by the cinnamon spice and minerality notes, reflected both on the nose and palate - the fruit had great energy and grip. I knew Gaunoux's wines were a bit tough in youth but had to check in on this and was happy I did.

Dinner with Friends (FMIII in the OC): First thing that popped into my mind as I tasted was "feminine". That might be because these followed the Cali pinots. Muted dark fruit, some earth tones, and medium plus finish.

Crushed sweet cherry, an indian-like spice, soil. It's delicate and lithe yet shows good intensity of tangy red fruit in the palate and finish. This was really delicious and shows lots of youth still, which as a 99 I would expect.

France 2012 - Côte d'Or; 7/16/2012-7/21/2012 (Beaune): Tasted at the Domaine. Opened and drank over an hour with Anne, Alexandre and Madame Gaunoux. Beautiful nose with notes of red pinot fruit and floral notes started to emerge from the glass after a few minutes of vigorous swirling. The nose is a very pure expression of pinot noir and on the palate it’s somewhat feminine and surprisingly approachable with its silky and elegant mouthfeel. There are fine tannins and great acidity that keeps the mouth watering on the lengthy and generous finish. This Pommard has some sneaky power behind it and for me might have been tough to guess this blind. This is excellent now but there’s a whole lot of potential wound up tight inside. I’ll open my first bottle in 3-5 years. Excellent. 92+

Gave this a couple of hours of slow-ox which made absolutely no dent in the tough facade that this wine presented. Very difficult to coax anything out on day1 other than that there is some fruit underlying the structure and tannin but the latter two dominate. Day2 showed better with some more dark fruit balancing the structure. Needs time.

A powerful and masculine wine that lacks something. Deep forest floor on the nose, with pure cherry fruit. Palate is focused, clean, with tight red fruit and a tart acid. Tastes like a baby, it just hints at what it will be in the future. Good, but even better in time.

Bought a mixed case of this producer from Envoyer awhile back and recently delivered (by recent, I mean yesterday). Why wait? Took this bottle to Stonehill Tavern in Dana Point (good thing I brought a bottle, those prices on the wine list...yikes!) and opened by sommelier. Medium ruby color, beautiful red fruit on the nose with no Burgundy funk (wife says "this smells wonderful"). This is a masculine wine, wonderful sous bois and minerality, tannins still present but not overpowering, fruit and acidity playing harmonious music together. Lots of complexity and got better as the night wore on. This tastes remarkably fresh and young for a bottle that has a dozen years on it. Good to go now, but can hold for many years to come, which is what I'm gonna do with my remaining bottles. If you're thinking about opening one, I'd give it a good 2 hr decant. Highly recommended.

Dark purple; Black cherry and spices on nose and palate; a big, rough wine yet complex and delicious.

Mid-dark garnet; earthy, animal, gamey nose; wood; mid-body; tight tannins; rounding out; long, rich finish. Needs time. w/Epoisses
