Raveneau MdT and Chapelot (Chicago, IL): Absolute stunner. Best at the end of the night. Krug is Krug -- there's really not much to say, except to give these babies plenty of air. The opulence and decadence that air lends to these wines are a marvel to behold. Lean from the vintage, but with the old-school Krug weight, this is something in fantastic harmony. I'm sure it can only get better with time, given the sheer amount of material there is in this wine.

Brilliant. One of the best Krugs (any label) I’ve had. Still tons of freshness but that rich toasty nutty almond marzipan creamy is in full effect and dancing with the fresh acidity. Finish forever of course.

On the nose, moderate autolytic notes with flecks of soy and lime; a touch of brioche on entry, and then a massive mineral rod emerges and continues with persistence, this duels with a long lemon acid layer. Just continues forever - really energetic, not really that much in autolysis notes for wine that is 2004 base (ie. approaching 20 years now).

Barbaresco vs. Barolo (Chicago, IL): 311032. Yeah, proper Krug. Opulent, rich, and powerful. Mature, and showing some plenty of richness, but more acidity and brighter than the Krug of yore. Really love how age has given this more of the old-school Krug feel; the moral of the story here clearly is to age your Grande Cuvée.

"I got three Willis" (Chicago, IL): 311032. The bottle doesn't give the edition, so this has the older gold label, but the ID tells you this is the 160eme. What a wine -- decent right at opening, but with an hour or two of air (and a good 2/3 of the bottle poured out), this really starts to strut its stuff. Sure, this has the acidity of the vintage, but also so much of that classic Krug richness. Really goes to show how much upside there is to aging Grande Cuvée.

These Krugs just carry along like nothing is going on outside. It certainly showed a lot of color but the palate was almost hard still. Powerful acidity for a ginger tinged citrus and apple show. Personally, I hoped for more autolytic expression but you kinda forget about what you wanted when what you got has this sort of length. Its got years to go if you must.

Champagne study (Chicago, IL): 214031. Thought this was the 168eme at first, and was surprised by how good it tasted. A very broad and denser version of the Grande Cuvée than the more recent releases, with a firm mineral backbone and generous acidity. A moderate amount of fruit remaining, with much of the classical Krug breadth and intensity. I wish I had bought more of this.

Despite the less than ideal glasses, the nose was still great. Intense yellow-gold. Very floral. Stayed bubbly for a long time. Balanced, layered and complex. Fruity - esp. pear, apple and ginger. Good balance esp. acidity (freshness) and sweetness. Smooth in the palate. Long finish. Good pairing with Cantonese cuisine.

This was a really good showing, as was our last bottle. Now, in mid-2021, this eme is showing its depth and class. Autolytic, dense and long, the ‘04 base acidity keeps it fresh. In addition to warm baguette, there’s white flowers, orchard fruit, sweet citrus. I’ve always liked the 160, but this year, it has really stepped out. Krug GC needs 15+ years to strut.

Savory and autolytic, but still young to my palate. I like the GC with a lot of age. 2004 based, with reserves back to 1990. Orchard fruit, ginger. Very vinous. A prevailing theme for all of the wines this week, this improved and opens dramatically with air and warmth.

Dim Sum Club at Majestic (Majestic Restaurant, Marina One): Still really young, but there was certainly quality on this. The nose was tight and lemony on first pour, but slowly opened up to show more expansive aromas of white fruit, apple flesh, and touches of mineral and spice. The palate was still tight and unyielding, but there was a quiet sense of strength and power to it, with a stream of ripe appley fruit riding on an undertow of mineral and super-bright, lemony acidity into a long, full finish. Mouthfilling stuff, coating absolutely every crevice, but still so young.

2004 tête de cuvées blind (Chicago, IL): Served double blind. Unmistakably a large-scaled, powerful wine with a slight bit more oxidation. It was the brightness here that prevented me from making the outright call of Krug though I should have calibrated for the vintage. White fruits and flowers, powerful acids, and a very complex wine. One of the winners today.

I was looking for something to pair with Osetra caviar, and found the perfect match. Complex and dense, yet it seemed lean, perhaps due to the '04 acidity. It is quite autolytic and leesy, yet fresh; complex and balanced. There are a lot of good years ahead of this one.

Krug ID 2 14 031 so disgorged Q2 2014. 2004 base but wines up to 1990 vintage in this wine. I feel this has closed down for a little rest. Certainly not too old but expressing more peaty and soil elements rather than the mature orchard fruit (nectarine/peaches/apricot) that you find when you get fully mature Krug. 166 edition was far more enjoyable and energetic and I didn't love the leaner expression of this Grand Cuvee.
A very interesting evening which shows the variation of the vintage as well as the skill in blending their Grand Cuvee. A question to all: is the G.C. actually under-valued given the ability of Krug to blend and select exactly want they want from their library wines to produce an amazing consistent and pleasurable wine?! Maybe not better than in a top vintage year but perhaps the better buy when the vintage year is a bit colder/wetter/less successful?

good champagne color, a rich and developing nose, succulent mousse, dark berries, bread, on the palate starting to cream nicely, rounded and showy, generous citrus and apple notes, a great breadth in its presentation, light brioche notes, at first still quite a bit of lemon on the finish, but that softened a bit with time, coming along quite nicely with the potential to be a bit on the showy side like its 2004 vintage cousins.

Wow my first time with the 160th and this is just gorgeous! So perfectly pulled together and layered with flavors - silky with great tension and richness. I am not sure if it is the additional time this has had in bottle or it it was always this great - but just a real stand out.

Hanging out with Olivier (Chicago, IL): This has consistently been one of my favourite numbered Krug GCs. It's got the brightness of the chardonnay, but the power of the pinot behind it as well. Tart citrus on the nose, but also some of that oxidative nuttiness and raw power. The palate is fleshed out, with a lovely breadth, as well as some of that classic 2004 raciness. I think a bit of age will help this come together more, but this is very delicious now already.

Thanks Dave! Same btl as R&Rler & Brad E. This rocked! Believe Dave said this one saw some extended cellar time and certainly was the better for it. As Brad or someone else commented this drinks as good as many vintage Krugs. I loved it! See R&Rler's excellent notes for more details.

Big Guns: Burgs and Bordeaux at Bellecour (Bellecour, Mpls, MN): Light-medium gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. With a 2004 base, you'd expect this to be pretty good, and it is. This just feels like classic Krug M/V. It has all the power and drive, coupled with an essence of sophistication. Toasted, fresh, vibrant, great green orchard fruits, quince spice, almond paste, long. Great now, I think this will get better. 94+(+)pts.

Lazy sunday afternoon Krug event - Vertical of 160eme-166eme , some vintage brut, Mesnil and Rose.: Really really good grand cuvee. Had it next to 04 Mesnil and 04 brut, it wasn't slacking behind either of them. It mixes a bit of the purity of the chardonnay from Mesnil and then adds some body to it that reminds you a bit of the brut. It doesn't have the drive and concentration of either of its siblings, but its completeness is what makes it so enticing. It's powerful but well rounded.

Krug Release Party (Zachys DC): This is based on the 2004 vintage (65% of the blend), but I *much* preferred it to the 2004 vintage bottling. 12 reserve vintages back to 1990. Poured from a jeroboam, which in theory is supposed to hold its freshness longer, and it's still pure and refreshing but is showing serious payoff from the extra few years it's had in bottle (bottled in 2014). Aromatics are mature, beyond fruit. The flavors are basically the same as the 163ème but everything is thicker and bolder, especially the flint. This is the 163ème with a Super Mario power-up and my favorite of the evening.

Ponsot Tasting with Alexandre Abel (Chicago, IL): I like this version of the GC more than the vaunted 164eme. This, to me, comes across closer to the Krug style, with some baked fruit and moderately oxidative tones, but with the white-hot acidity that the 164eme has. It's a rounded complete Krug experience, with just the right amount of acidity to counterweight all the stuffing here.

Disgorged Q2/14. More expressive on the nose than 163eme and of course the corresponding 2004 vintage tasted before. Nuts, brioche, spices, smoke, white fruit. Lively, round, generous, wonderful acidity. Very long, less power and depth compared to 2004 vintage. Drink or keep. 92-94

Tasted from both 750mL and 3L. Both have an exotic Caribbean spice component, and a brightness characteristic of the vintage. There's not quite the tension of the '04 vintages, presumably owing to the reserve wines. The 3L, for whatever reason, seems both more ready and larger-scaled in just about every way. There's an added depth and slightly darker fruit component. The 3L in particular is spectacular.

Krug 2004 Presentation (Chicago, IL): Very enjoyable and softened, this is also starting to show the maturation of Grande Cuvée 5 years on. Lots of mature apple and baked apple with toasty notes. I like Grande Cuvée in the 2-5 year range post-release, and would be drinking these up.

Chicago 2004 Krug Presentation (The Roof Crop): From 3.0 Liter. Strikingly different than the same wine tasted from 750 earlier in the evening. The aromatics here are so intense and similar to the 750, with perhaps a bit more emphasis on crisp fruit and biscuit. The palate is where it contrasts from the 750 -- much more racy with amped up acidity. Shows much, much younger and more intense. Great now, with upside from here.

Chicago 2004 Krug Presentation (The Roof Crop): A very interesting contrast to the Vintage 2004 tasted side-by-side. Much more open and harmonious, as you might expect but not a simple pushover by any means. The aromatics are layered with so much going on -- apple, citrus, baked bread. The palate has youthful richness with sweet apple fruit. Excellent cut and poise. This is so delicious right now.

Chicago 2004 Krug Release (Chicago, IL): 214031. As far as the Grande Cuvee goes, this bottle was even better than the 164eme, at least in that it was much more approachable. It gives up its charms easily, and this embodies, in my mind, the bottle of "ready" Grande Cuvee. It's a softer and approachable champagne, and but the Krug concentration and power are all there. The lemony acidity of the 2004 vintage is here in spades, but I think the added extra juice does a lot of work to round out this wine. An iteration of the Grande Cuvee very much to my taste now.

Classic, ready, highly enjoyable. Medium length holds it back a bit though. Will be interesting to compare to 2004s at some point.

Birthday Dinner (Home, Millbrae): Beautiful yeasty aromas, aromatic, toast; palate is richly textured, full bodied, medium-plus acidity, mousse has moderated with age, nice citrus component which gives it great freshness; finish is medium-plus length. A very nice Krug NV, at full maturity and ready to drink. 92-93

3/5/2019 - Elpaninaro Likes this wine:
Served immediately after opening
good champagne color, a rich and developing nose, succulent mousse, dark berries, bread, on the palate starting to cream nicely, rounded and showy, generous citrus and apple notes, a great breadth in its presentation, light brioche notes, at first still quite a bit of lemon on the finish, but that softened a bit with time, coming along quite nicely with the potential to be a bit on the showy side like its 2004 vintage cousins.

94+(+)pts.

This changed a lot throughout the night. From blue cheese and oxidative notes in the beginning, lemon and nutty flavors of almonds and hazelnuts emerged. More lemon, citrus, green apples, and creamy texture on the palate. Long finish.
