Impressive- after a decade still young and energetic- beautiful nose - reminds me of a Valtellina - some alpine, bordering on mint on the nose - the darker side of Nebbiolo but with a streak of mint. Really shined on day 2 - I should revisit my last bottle in at least a few years - plenty of tannic power. Outstanding QPR

A bit of spice on the nose, tar, nose a bit tight - tannins in a good place for me - well pronounced - nice acidity and long finish. Drinking well - needs a bit of air but overall solid.

Oh man I love this wine. I've loved it since my first bottle out of this case, and now I only have 2 left. I hope I can keep my hands off them, because this is going places for sure. It's only a step down from Barolo - makes sense since they didn't classify anything in 2014, to my knowledge, and the class shows. There's power and elegance here, way above the level of most langhe nebbiolo. Much darker and more serious than the Produttori, which we also buy and enjoy. Despite how stacked this is, it is still totally slurpable. I should buy this ever year. While not every year is as good as this one, I've never had one where I didn't wish I'd bought more. Darn good juice.

Dekantert 2 t. Rubinrød. Lukter treverk, kirsebær og lær. Lett munnfølelse med silkefrukt. Polert. Bra struktur og tørr finish. Moderat grip. Deklasset Barolo. Drikker bra nå, men holdbar.

Very much a lower key Barolo. Fine dark red fruits, cherry and plum. Black tea. Bit of forest floor. Good acidity, medium length. Great value. No rush if you've got more.

I haven't bought the Cavallotto nebbiolo in quite some time, and would probably have passed on this as well but for the recommendation of a wine store owner I trust. Boy, am I glad I didn't! This is delicious, slurpable stuff, but with plenty of serious elements if you stop to think about them. Dense and juicy, though not "grapey" (a thing I don't like), with plenty of acid carrying it along to a full bodied finish. Open and nearly opulent, except that there's plenty of frame and structure to keep the fruit from getting out of hand, as well as a savory element that I quite like. The nebbiolo character is clearly in evidence and, while no one would mistake it for Barolo, it's sure to please even the most stodgy among us. You could serve this to anyone, I think. Not going to make any predictions about its future, as I'm pretty sure we'll go through it before it starts to fade. I could be wrong, of course - this is declassified Barolo, as they didn't make one in 2014, so could have a lot more stuffing. Not decanted, served in a Riedel sommelier burg stem, since we happened to have them out and already in use from this guys big brother earlier in the evening.

From the glass list at Charlie Bird. This was really drinking very nice and open. Lighter in color and mouthfeel - quite silky and elegant on the palate. Tastes of red fruit, and lot of dried leaf forest floor notes - some florals. Very pretty - would make a great daily drinker for the cellar.

The nose showed a deep and dark expression of Nebbiolo fruit, with masses of crushed black cherry, lavender, chalk dust minerality, hints of olive and savory herbs. On the palate, found a mix of ripe strawberry and cherry with an herbal twang and brisk acidity as chewy tannin set in reminding me that this is declassified Barolo fruit. The finish was grippy and long, yet still enjoyable, with a hint of stems from the palate and dried cherry fruit.

Nose is cherry sours on steroids with some smoke and floral aspects. Similar flavors with plenty of acid and tannins. Very full and round. It’s good now, but I think it needs another year or two in bottle before it really starts to show.

Dinner with Tim (Tim's): 2nd day. Strong oxidation. Sweet honey - possible botrytis. Ripe Barolo style - typical of Cavallotto. High tannins. 14%. Med acid.

Robust tannins, strong acid, cherry candy. The faintest hint of herbs. Not a fantastic vintage and yet here we are making our way through the bottle at near-record pace. Just goes to show you the importance of producer over vintage. This isn't a vintage with a lot of upside, but who cares? Well paired with a pork chop, seared on the stove in cast iron before spending time in the oven and being finished with aged balsamic.

PnP. Violet-tinged translucent red. Crushed berries, plums, dried earth on the nose. Medium weight fruit that feels creamy, but is framed by stern tannins and a nice dose of acidity. Could have used a decant or more cellar time, but at the table the palate all came into balance and the fruit made a positive contribution.

Nebbiolo bottling from a top Barolo producer in an off year, with some finesse and nice nose, drinking well now. Good value wine that matched with a range of Italian dishes (bresaola, prosciutto, and tortellini with fresh peas).

Easy to drink and rich with coffee and earth. Works well with a meal and doesn't interfere with complex and subtle food flavors. [rating caveat: on a hot date in a great mood]

Decanted for just over an hour before tasting. Medium garnet core, pink rim. Black cherries, roses, tar, liquorish and spices on the nose and palate. At first a little tight, but opens up nicely after a couple of hours revealing lots of fragrant Nebbiolo fruit. Good concentration and firm grip. Should ideally rest for another couple of years, but already so good with food that it’ll be hard to keep away. Decant or hold (90-92 points).

This was bright and lively, with really solid fruit and very food friendly. The tannins were not too bad, but they did grow more powerful with time. I would bet that lesser producers in the Barolo zone would kill to be able to make a Barolo as good as this lowly Langhe.

Cavallotto (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Light red. Lovely pure fragrance of olives, flowers, and tobacco. Light and supple. Just a hint of sweet fruit on the entry, brown spice, leafy notes, sound acidity. Fine grained tannins with a little bitterness that will probably resolve in a year or two.

After having tasted a couple of 2012 Barolo, this is unsurprisingly much brighter, lighter and simpler on the nose. Also a bit of green bell pepper and slightly herbaceous. On the palate very linear with refreshing acidity, crunchy fruit, good length. Overall a bit angular and lean. 87-89

Camphor and a hint of strawberry on the nose. On the palate, red fruit and light savory spice, with light tannins and good acidity on the short to medium finish. Cavallotto made this instead of Barolo in 2014, and although the quality is good it's a big step down from Barolo. Average value at about $27.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ tannins and medium+ acidity. The tannins are somewhat green and the acidity is on the astringent side. That said, the feel is round and pretty with herbs, red fruits, rose petals, and some red cherries.
Overall: This was effected by the vintage a great deal. It is easy drinking and clearly for early drinking, but it lacks in some departments that would make it better.

Tasted during visit. Notes of pure red fruit (raspberries), some tobacco leaf, also some green pepper notes. It's lighter-medium bodied with high acidity and medium- tannin. Medium length. A fresh and pleasant Nebbiolo from this more challenging vintage.

2016 Visit to Cavallotto with Giuseppe (Tenuta Bricco Boschis, Castiglione Falletto): As earlier, this wine contains all of Cavallotto's 2014 Nebbiolo crop. But I wouldn't say it's a bargain or a junior Barolo. The nose was little closed with some spice and black fruit. On palate, more concentrated than most Langhe Nebbioli. Savoury, dark fruit and a little brooding. Also, a little rustic with some green tannins. I thought this wine might evolve quite quickly. Giuseppe suggested consuming it in the next five years.

More baby Barolo than modern Langhe Nebbiolo. Typical aromas, a bit light which is unsurprising given the vintage.
