Half bottle - good clear amber color and fine cork. Some felt could be slightly corked, but others like myself did not pick up on it. Full of classic apricot, peaches, and orange blossom in a silky smooth medium concentrated style. Enjoyable and good, yet a bit soft and less intense then the very best vintages.

Finished off our wonderful Xtremo dinner last nite at CKH with this and a 2001 Sauternes, both blind. Lovely aromatics, medium body. The color was nowhere near as dark as I would have expected. Also, the 01 was far sweeter than this; indeed, I wouldn't call this Yquem dry but possibly off-dry. There's apricot fruit and honeysuckle, as well as some marmalade here, but not nearly as sweet as one would expect. Solid acidity, great length, apricot, beeswax and petrol aromas on the nose. Not your usual Yquem but still quite enjoyable.

Half bottle: Deep golden color, medium body but exquisitely balanced, thick. The sweet nose is dominated by apricot, peach, honey, orange marmalade and some pineapple notes. Not as complex as other years. More elegant than massive. No signs of decline.

Charleston IV - Return of the Collectible; 9/27/2018-9/30/2018 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Again a really nice showing and a great sipper to finish the night. I appreciated in this instance after a bigger dinner something that wasn't quite as intense but had the nice acidity that D'Yquem does so well and lots of apricots and caramel. Not rating as I rated it when we had the first bottle the night before.

Charleston Offlineorama IV; 9/27/2018-10/1/2018 (Charleston, NC (various locations)): 10th/11 wines tasted. Yquem is always such a pleasure to drink and while this did not quite reach the heights of the '88 from the night prior it was still lovely. Color was a medium amber. Apricot, honeysuckle, a hint of fennel and the lovely viscous mouthfeel with perhaps a hair less acidity, so a touch sweeter.

Charleston IV - Return of the Collectible; 9/27/2018-9/30/2018 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): Two nights in a row of D'Yquem - it doesn't get any better than that! This is apricot and cloves and ginger. Less vibrancy than the '88, but in some ways I was ok with it. Theoretically not the best year for D'Yquem, but I've never had a bad vintage of this wine. Light in fruit and sweetness, this was more about the floral and honeysuckle, orange and apricot characteristics than richer, honeyed, tropical fruits The finish expressed lemon and citrus notes, with a touch of marmalade. This is as good as this is going to get. More cellaring is not going to add much to this wine.

90's Cali Cab and the Kitchen Sink (Ursino in Union, NJ): Loved this. Just such a great dessert wine and somehow it always seems like D'Yquems are in a league of their own. It's not the best vintage by any stretch, but it is lovely. I think I put redemption in a glass after how poorly the Dunn showed earlier in the night. Paired particularly well with a Butterscotch semifreddo.

I believe and will continue to to believe that D'Yquem is its own category of dessert wine and wine in general and the rest of us just respect that orbit. That being said, of all of the vintage years I've had, this was my least favorite. Still wonderful and phenomenal and the kindof wine that makes you believe that the entire meal should just have been liquid, but not the same transcendent experience as some other years have had. Very good, but not great. Good acidity. I think what was missing was the super long finish that just keeps going where you can remember it hours after the wine.

Very volatile nose, with acetic acid and ethyl acetate emerging around the 2-hour mark. Before that it was showing apricots, creme brulee, baking spice, butterscotch, and peach. The flaws eventually overwhelmed this wine, unfortunately. Showed much better when chilled than when at room temperature. Drank over the course of about five hours.

From half bottle. Slightly pale in colour. Low-toned nose with notes of anise, orange peel, and almond extract that isn't particularly entrancing. Does it smell like d'Yquem? Mostly. But does it have the wow factor? Not even close. A palate that matches the aromas, but again nothing particular to taste here. The balance is there, but the concentration and extract are missing. Granted '94 was a dismally bad vintage, and you have to give recognition of such great execution, but in terms of what d'Yquem could be, this is a disappointment.

Richly botrytissed fruit. Classic nose of honeysuckle and mineral. Vibrant acidity - apricot and orange zest - that offered a long, mouth watering finish. Liquid gold in a glass. In this is in an off year!

After a wonderful evening of California offerings we were hoping this would be the highlight but unfortunately this one did nothing for any of us. Overly sweet and almost cloying there was no distinct apricot, caramel or other distinguising flavors that I was hoping for. This was a hodgepodge of sweetness that was not complex or distinguising in any way.

Bordeaux v Burgundy event (The Square Restaurant - London): Is there such a thing as a poor Yquem? Maybe. I found this rather disappointing, with a short and burnt finish. All the usual Sauternes notes but without getting anywhere the complexity of the 2003 La Tour Blanche I had recently (at 10% of the price to boot). Bah!

It's almost always exciting to taste any vintage of d'Yquem. Especially one that you've never seen before. On the other hand, there's an exception for every rule. 94 Yquem is the exception to the rule. This could have been a bottle of "Y", the dry wine produced by Yquem. It lacked concenttration, sweetness and botrytis. Petrol, apricots and unclean flavors, plus a large tab for an overpriced wine is what you'll find in this vintage of off Yquem. This is not a bad wine, it's a poor Yquem. There is a difference. This is not a wine to buy.
The Other Great French Blancs: Champagne and Sauternes (Wink Restaurant, Austin, Texas): Not liked as much as the 1993 d’Yquem, this was much simpler and flabbier. Medium gold, it had a metallic nose with some fruit and petrol, and little apparent acidity. It had some good notes of fruit peels, lemon, orange, honeysuckle, rich apricot, pear, honeydew, vanilla, cinnamon, baking spices, orange mint, eucalyptus, and menthol. For some the finish was good. I think these wines needed food, especially blue cheese, and did not drink as well as most d’Yquems do without food. This might improve with some time on the bottle.

Score might be a bit harsh, but I expected much more from this wine. Intense aroma of fuel that did not blow off over the course of the night. Some honey and floral lingering in there somewhere, but the petrol pushed everything back. Paired with a foie gras, but the wine actually distracted from the food. This was a very disappointing bottle!

This was my first d'Yquem. I would worry that my high expectations or my inexperience with sauterne caused my dislike for this but others with more experience and a love of d'Yquem and sauterne were disappointed as well. It was petrol and more petrol over and over agaain. On the nose, on the palate even hours later. My 86 may be generous.

Awesome golden color. Exotic nose that took me a while to comprehend, but a note must be made about this wine's ability to evolve and change over time, from the moment it is uncorked on. Very exuberant and rich flavors, very concentrated from the initial attack, great harmony, awesome complexity, exotic acidity; all in all, a very sensational and thought provoking composition, awesome terroir, almost viscous, almost full bodied, intense, racy, yet educated and intellectual. Very easy to drink, very amazing, almost addictive. Great sense of balance among all multiple atributes.

White Truffle Dinner (Chez Patrick Sun Street, Hong Kong): Deep golden colour. Lovely nose of lychees, ripe pineapple and star anise. A nicely balanced, medium weight palate of grapefruit and pomelo with a touch of creme brulee. Quite rich. We had two bottles and there was considerable variation in intensity between the two, which we largely concurred was cork taint which never quite left the affected bottle. The score is an average of the two bottles and judging the poorer bottle on how it finally showed.

This mag was the guest of honor at a dinner I organized. Obviously, it was good and it was an excellent example of Sauternes, that distinct combination of sweet and dry. Having noted that, I was not blown away -- perhaps my expectations were too high, or perhaps the bottle was too young. Did not seem to be that deep. For the price ($300) would not buy again.

An overlooked vintage, this isn't the deepest or densest Yquem but it is a very typical one. It has a sweet, syrupy fragrance of apricot confiture and candied orange peel and tastes commensurately rich. But it's not nearly as sticky as it was a few years ago, and as rich as it is, it's shimmering and pliant in the mouth and never seems fat or cloying.

Deep yellow. Luscious, viscous texture, and fantastically concentrated Sauternes nose. Lacking botrytis, but, tasted blind, everyone loved this. They were flabbergasted when it was revealed, and naturally, people liked it even more!!! This was a truly beautiful, sexy and voluptuous wine, which made us all wonder what Yquem in a truly monumental year can be like.

A little disappointing, but probably because I expected so much. Medium gold colour with yellow gold rim. Slightly oxidised, sherry like nose with only a little caramel, tropical fruit. On the palate though it is lovely and sweet, only medium botrytis, but with a lovely orange, caramel and tropical flavour. Very nice finish.

closed and dull: perhaps just a dumb stage. lettucy-veggie underripe note with some bright, sugary touches. later apricoty character emerges, but rather cloying, hollow, and not much botrytis. could and should improve a lot.

Medium yellow to golden in colour. Prunes and honey on the nose, and maybe chlorine. A bit "narrow" in structure. But very, very concentrated. This wine doesn't seem to fan out a touch all the sweet spots on the palate, but rather relies on the sheer concentration. Not that complex. Medium finish.

Classic D'Yquem elements but I was a little thrown by the lemon twist at the end of the finish. First time I've caught that in a d'Yquem.

Shared with Francois Mauss at L'Antica Trattoria in Colle val d'Elsa. Very clean and pure but a lesser vintage for this producer.

beautiful golden color with a bit of honey mustard. Loved this wine, slightly softer than the 99 that we had a month earlier...What this wine must be in a great year is beyond me

Opened six weeks prior. Nice enough, but nothing special for what it is. 7/06

Concentrated, rolling velvety waves of honey, orange and spice that shoot to the back of the mouth. Not a great Yquem, but a Yquem all the same.
