After two mediocre bottles of the 2004 I finally hit the jackpot. We pnp'd at dinner. The nose was dark fruit and chocolate. The palate was plum, dark cherry and chocolate. The finish was long, full and smooth. Someone else had commented that is was on the sweet side. I did find the sweetness but I attribute it the combo of chocolate and cherry on the palate.

After all the Switchback Wines that I have consumed over the years this is the first bottle that i had that was barely good. I had also given a bottle to my daughter and she had the same impression so I cannot blame the bottle or the storage. It had dark fruit on the nose, the palate was nondescript, the finish brought out nothing special - just an average bottle of wine. To me after adoring SWR wines for years it was a disappointment - again not a bad wine just nothing special.

Don't know if this was a "off" bottle or indicative of the remaining wines i own, but the wine seems past it's prime and has lost some of it's initial fruit.

Really impressive wine. Decanted and consumed over two days. Big fruit. Big tannin. But integrated beautifully. Lots of depth and layers. Really, for a 2004, this is excellent. We felt like it's in its early peak and probrbly has 4-5 more years of improvement and will stay at peak for another 8-10 years. Really pleased.

Richly fruited with strawberry and raspberry jam fruit, nice earth and herbal notes. Moderate acidity and fine tannin. A solid bigger Merlot but I think this was probably better in its youth with more baby fat and exuberance.

This was simply singing... a 10 year old merlot that blew away the crowd at the end of the evening. It needed about two hours of slow O2 to get to opening and really starting to open. It drank like a great cab at a third-to-half the price.

Tasted non blind with dinner. Allowed to glass decant for 30 minutes before serving. Followed over 90 minutes.
Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of violets, plums, currants and black berries. Flavors of plums, black berries and a hint of currant on the finish. Medium acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink over the next 4 years or so but it is drinking pretty well right now. Decant for sediment only.
This was my last bottle.

Opaque purple in color. 15.5% ABV. Nose of cassis, tar and dark fruits. Plums, currants, blackberry, raspberry, vanilla, leather and smoke on the palate. Silky tannins and a long, lush finish. Massive wine. Big and extracted. Full bodied, rich and unctuous. This is a Bob Foley wine through and through. Drink over the next 3-5 years.

I wished I had brought this one, it was clearly my WOTD among 19 Merlots; beautiful balance with lots of complexity, easy on the palate, long lasting at the back end and overall a classy, elegant wine with that proverbial power and finesse distinction.

Oustanding Merlot with blueberries, coffee, spice, minerals and cherry. Wonderful aromas and rich wine with a ton of flavors. Medium to long finish and tannins have soften over time. This should drink well for another five plus years. 93 to 95.

This is an absolute bomb of a wine. Huge dark black fruit and big loamy, chalky, chewy structure. Paired with big steak and potato night. Fully ripe dark cherry, blackberry, boysenberry and plum notes. tannins are wild and thick with extremely heavy palate weight and nice gripping bite. Hedonist wine: might actually be a touch over the top with 15% alcohol but if you are into big heavily extracted Bob Foley wines, this will be right in your wheelhouse.

pop and decant; no waiting time. Drank over and hour or two. Pretty much echo prior notes. This is my typical "92 pt" wine. Fruit was jammy and palate was very smooth. Mid to light bodied for my tastes. Finsih was decent, but not that lengthy. Again, a very nice drinking wine, but not mind blowing.

Took a few minutes to open up and blow off the prune and leather smells. Once it settled in, had really nice dark fruit characteristics with an excellent mouthfeel. Still has nice tannins and grip. Really nice wine that is showing its age nicely. Still has life left, but maybe only a year or two.

What a wonderful wine, barely showing signs of age. Very dark and pushing the limits of extraction and ripeness. Mocha and yes due to the ripeness SOME pruney characteristics. However, this is a LOVELY drink for sure and in quite a good spot right now. Can see this hanging on for another 4-5 years. VERY good

Seattle eBob offline (Travis' house): The nose had nice oak, cherry and vanilla with a tiny bit of heat. The palate was crammed full of black cherry and cassis with a rich vanilla note. Full bodied with a huge mouthfeel that carried through a long finish. We tasted this Merlot before a 2001 Blankiet Cab, and a 2006 Cayuse En Chamberlin Syrah. After the Cab and the Syrah, we were still talking about this Merlot, and many of us tasted it again. I haven't seen that happen with a Merlot for quite a while. This was one of best Merlots that I have had.

Drank over a span of 2 nights. On night 1 with a 6+ hour decant in bottle, this bottle was definitely strutting its stuff. Dark chocolate, vanilla mid-palate with little to no signs of alcohol. Typical SB huge profile with a 30+ sec finish. With the remaining half bottle left uncorked overnight and re-corked for the ride home the following day, it was absolutely gorgeous when consumed over mac and cheese at home. This was nothing like the 375mls, FORTUNATELY!

Massive amounts of Oak and Vanilla Crème frame this Chocolate Cherry merlot. It may take 5 more years before this wine fully integates as it smelled like a fresh new oak barrell rolled out of a truck. The palate was loaded with Cherries, Red Currant, Blackberry and Chocolate with an interesting eucalyptus characteristic that defined this as Merlot. Very sweet tanins and a long lingering finish. Bob Foley did well here, but I will stick with Pride for Merlot. Very good but a bit over the top for my taste.

Takes time; poured through a Vinturi aerator to simulate 1 hr decanting into a decanter, then poured from the dacanter back through the vinturi into glasses. Consumed over 4 hrs, with the first glasses done in this manner, the last half out of the decanter. Early glasses were very fruit-oriented with a slight alcohol tinge; without the vinturi it was overly tannic and one-dimensional. The final 1/3 of the decanter was just outstanding, with lots of cinnamon, chocolate and dark fruits over a lush tannic base. This is an exquisite and full-bodied merlot deserving of age, and brought to life.

Dark ruby to the rim. The nose tonight was not as expressive as past bottles, but showing signs of black currants and espresso nonetheless. Full-bodied with a silky texture, the tannins let me know they were still there. While this wine is not showing as well as it has in the past, it is yet another good, solid merlot from Foley.

From a 375 and followed for 3+ hours. Medium purple with red undertoe. Expressive out of the bottle and poured in a small decanter. Mixed berry nose. A little of that dusty cocoa powder I've had in other Switchbacks hits the palate (but fades with air). Lots of dark cherry, chocolate, light plum, mixed berries and some coffee towards the finish. Big mouthcoating wine and it is delicious. Nice finish. The structure really sneaks up on you, with air the tannins are increasingly notable. Seems to have more acidity than the 03 and 02 vintages I recently had. Should rock with time. Nice.

Nice.
