I do not know how it happened but Pontet Canet 1997 evolved in a spectacular and unexpected way the past couple of years. I bough ta 12 bottle case upon release and have been regularly disappointed. The wine was typical of 97, earthy, green and globally unpleasant. I had 2 bottles left which were sitting there and I decided to open one on July 4th. What a pleasant surprise, green aromas have disappeared and the wine smells and tastes now like a good old fashioned Pauillac. Medium body, some tannins left and this difficult to describe appealing taste of Bordeaux wines that aged very well. I now wish I had one more case!

Drank at WWS bordeaux event. Showing far better than expected. Very generous nose of barnyard, earth and some black fruit. Light to medium body, still decent fruit level here, and lots of wonderful earthiness, mushrooms, barnyard and some lead pencil. Surprisingly good length too. Really well-preserved and made a great showing. WOTN by far.

Medium garnet color. Black cherry and pomegranate fruit and some oak-spice, buoyed by brighter acidity than you expect at age 20. No strong 'mature' notes. No decanting required.

Surprisingly good for a '97 (except now I'm hearing many classified Bordeaux turn out to be 'good for '97s'). Tertiary notes, classic Pauillac, but the finish is a little sour and astringent. It's possible another couple years will straighten that out...or maybe that's just how it is.

Weekly tasting group RWP: Really Special Wines (@ DJ): In the bouquet dark forest fruits, chocolate, sweet spices, vanilla and forest floor impressions. On the palate dark and red berry fruits, chocolate, earth, elegant acidity and a touch of sweetness. Off vintage, elegant wine. Starting with 2000 Pontet Canet improved considerably. For this bottle nevertheless 89 and still enjoyable for some years, but don’t wait too long.

The initial color is faded red rose while the initial flavor is dusty rose. After an hour and a half, the nose of plum, cherry, cassis, red currants, licorice, graphite, cedar, and saddle leather weaves to form an attack and midpalate. The finish seems to come across as plum, leather and mocha. The mouthfeel sits a bit lighter than anticipated, but that’s picking a nit. Only the slightest of sediment. While I’m not certain of the blend, this chateau sports vineyards of Cabernet Sauvignon 60%, Cabernet Franc 5%, Merlot 33%, Petit Verdot 2%. 13% alc. With grilled (beef) NY strip steaks topped with valdeon blue cheese. Special day wine. Recommended.

A blend of CS (66%) and Merlot (34%), aged for 16 months in oak barrels, of which 60% were new.
Dark ruby color with some bricking towards the rim. Somewhat developed aroma profile with notes of wizened, savory dark berries, leather, smoke, some slightly barnyardy animal aromas, a little herbal greenness and a hint of ash. Quite restrained and even a bit shy on the palate with dry, pretty reticent flavors of savory red berries, leafy greenness, some dry blackcurrant notes, a little cedary oak character and a sweeter undercurrent of chocolate. The mouthfeel is medium-bodied to light - even thin by classic Bordeaux standards. Good bright acidity gives the wine freshness and structure, whereas the tannins are few and completely resolved, not contributing much to the structure nor to the mouthfeel. Overall the wine feels pretty soft and mellow. The finish seems to be further downhill than the palate, as it is pretty short and dull. The aftertaste shows some nice, mature deth and complexity with flavors of dried dark berries, some sweeter plum notes, hints of oak cocoa and chocolate and a touch of sous-bois, but it is feels pretty thin and nondescript.
Although I prefer this kind of light and elegant style over those sweet modern wines the big Châteaux produce nowadays, I found this wine a bit too nondescript. Most likely it is due to the off vintage, that produced pretty thin and dilute wines - although this wine has obviously never been a big and rich wine, I can imagine has been showing better some years earlier. Now the wine is just starting to feel a bit too dull and lifeless - although there is still some lovely complexity left in the wine. Very much at the end of its lifespan, so if you have bottles in your cellar, better hurry.

Dinner at Matt and Francesca’s (Vancouver, BC): Opened and consumed 4 hours later. This showed a ton of Pauillac character with notes cassis, bell pepper/stalks, pencil shavings and nice poopy funk. Perfectly resolved on the palate with fine acidity and medium weight. Drinking very well now and I don’t see this getting any better. Excellent.

A perfect claret (for me). A beautiful dark ruby in the glass. mature notes on the nose of cigar box with still some red fruit hanging in there. Gripping savoury palate, with a fairly decent length. Med body, med acidity, med tannin, etc... I should stop and interrogate this wine more, but i'm just going to enjoy it with a beef stir fry (not too spicy) and a movie.
good stuff, and drinking well now. My last bottle so no need to worry about how much longer it's going to last.

Chateau Pontet Canet Vertical 1994-2004 plus 1990: Expressive nose, maybe not the most exhuberant but ripe and mature. Some animal notes are present along with plummy fruit, sweet spice and some green pepper notes. In the palate the flavor of wood is prominent. Pencil shavings are more to the front than the fruit. Somewhat lean, but not in a bad sense, and slightly bitter - still a very fine wine. Black fruit is elegant and is accompanied by some herbal tones like eukalyptus and mint. Texture is soft. This was the more mellow but slightly fading of the tasting. Not much time ahead of it but beautiful to open now.

Medium deep red. Only faint signs of bricking surprisingly. Tea, tobacco, black currants on the nose. Good juicy fruit on the palate - black currants and black cherries, with just a touch of vanilla cream. Medium body, just a little on the thin side. Not a long finish, but very enjoyable all the same. Great value in a discounted vintage.

I could drink this for breakfast -- okay, maybe not breakfast, but certainly any occasion after that. A perfect claret as our friends on the big island would describe it. Perfectly balanced, nice fruits (cherry) at first, evolving into a somewhat drier (but no less pleasant) end. The tragedy is that is is my last.

Like many 97's, proving to be a very pleasurable if not necessarily complex drink. This Pontet Canet had more depth and intensity than others from the vintage but it still lacked any real finish or length.

M21: Mature and Delicious (ExtraSpace @ Boon Keng): Loads of green peppers. Tarish, slightly toasty. Approachable with reasonably nice and resonating red fruits. Typical pauillac leathery notes as well as interesting sweet tobacco shows through too. Just a dissappoints on the short finish. If not, this would be a beautifully good value for an unlike vintage.

"M21" - Mature and Delicious Wines (Extra Space, Singapore): Wow, this was surprisingly good. Lovely Pauillac nose of green peppers, tobacco leaf, cassis, a bit of tar and a slightly toasty, cigar box tone. Palate had nice fresh acidity, good weight and a nice amount of cherries and sweet cassis fruit along with a touch of green apple, all wrapped in plush, resolved tannins. Earthy leathery finish lingered somewhat, with touches of tobacco. Only issue was that any power the wine had just died after the mid-palate, so that the finish, lengthy as it was, felt a little weak. Still, a surprisingly good wine given the negative press 1997 had when first released. Right in its dirnking window, it gave lots of pleasure. Almost like a less fleshy but slightly more elegant 1999.

Perfectly decent, oh hell, very good Pauillac. The flavors were not all that deep or intense, but it was very well balanced, and very, very drinkable. Although I realize '97 was sort of disappointing to many, I have a had a few wines from the vintage, and they were all rather good. Perhaps what I like about them is their accessibility. They are not wines for the long haul, but all wines need not be.

Dark fruit and tobacco in the nose. On the palate dark fruit, tobacco, creamy mouthfeel, not much complexity, medium bodied, tannins integrated. My first Bordeaux 1997 and my first Pontet Canet. Although good wine, I expected more, maybe because of the lesser vintage and high expectations for this chäteau.

Intriging smell of raspberries and acetone with a hint of vanilla and coffee. The rim shows a hint of aging. Kind of disappointing taste where the acidity is dominating everything. Only a minor fruit profile and a litte bit vanilla and cedar. Not as bad as expected and still a nice glass. Should have been drunk a couple of years ago for maximum enjoyment.

Bought on clearance from LWS for a glimpse into what the 03-05s in the cellar might be like. Day 1 the wine seemed disjointed on the palate thought the nose was nice. Day 2 it was nicely integrated and much more enjoyable. Overall, though, this isn't a profound wine and 86-88 seems to be an appropriate scoring range.

UK Wine Pages - 1997 Off-line (Colombier Restaurant - Chelsea): Relatively youthful apparance. A little reticent on the nose, but open for business on the palate with cassis fruit and some nice beefy notes. Perhaps a little more complex than the Sociando, but not as deep or long. Very good.

This wine continues to improve and is a great success for the vintage. The nose is open aromatically with dark fruits, cassis and tobaco on the nose. On the palate mimicks a right banker with its rich, black fruits, cedar and earth. A great value.

Dark color, wonderful, ripe nose of black fruit that reminds me of Pomerol. The palate follows the nose with rich, black fruits and resovled tannins on the finish. An excellent wine on its own the fact that it does not carry high critical acclaim only makes it taste better! Drink now.

This was my least favorite wine in the P-C vertical. I was not as impressed with this wine as some of the other CWM. I thought the wine came of as a little too rustic and lacking in fruit. Notes of fresh mushroom and plum. Astringent tannins. Moderate finish. 86 points.

Wines of 1997 Offline (Le Colombier): Dark ruby; smooth red and black fruits; good use of oak and very long.

Drink now.

Still young but with ample time it opened beautifully.

Hints of tobacco and dirt on the nose with a palate of subdued fruit and earth, nice mouthfeel and a somewhat short finish. I agree with mmyette that the wine is drinking well now.

Medium bodied claret, with characteristic Pauillac led pencil, slate, and sublte fruit. Finish wa moderate, and this wine is drinking well, now. Large ring of senecence around rim, consume in next 2-3 years.

Pontet Canet Vertical with Alfred Tesseron (Triomphe Restaurant in NYC): Hard, stiff. Nice dark fruit with a clipped finish. Slightly off flavors. A bit unfocussed.

Tight and fruity but evolved over dinner. Highlight of meal. Not worth 90 Euros in restaurant but was better value than meal.

Had it with tender fillet of beef, potatoe gratin and gravy with chevre cheese - and it was great! Could use one or two more years in the cellar, but is nice to consume today as well, preferably with food or cheese as the tannins still are prominent.

This was my least favorite wine in the P-C vertical. I was not as impressed with this wine as some of the other CWM. I thought the wine came of as a little too rustic and lacking in fruit. Notes of fresh mushroom and plum. Astringent tannins. Moderate finish. 86 points.
