my last bottle, last entry on this bottling/vintage. clearly some variation in quality of cork with this wine as i've had trouble with them in the past including this past xmas holiday (no tasting note on that occasion) but this cork came out in perfect condition. the '04 doix vinyes velles continues to defy its age, absolutely firing on all cylinders. beautifully complex, great depth, lots of appeal.

cork 1/3 stained… initially, out of the wine fridge @12c/54f, the nose and palate were v muted, so a good reminder to be patient. similar notes to prior bottles but on this occasion, a pronounced soy aroma. once up in temp, this wine delivers in spades. beautiful mature priorat, lots of savoury character, wood and spice but some blackberry and plum too. and still some good tannic grip on the finish. love.

Definitely showing more depth and complexity than the 2001 we had by its side. More development, silkier tannins and longer finish. This bottle won that battle. Drink on the short term.

A beautiful wine drinking very well at this stage of its life. I wouldn't hold for much longer as I feel this wine is on the plateau about to begin declining, however it should drink well for the next decade.
Great structure and dark fruit. The classic Priorat nose is distinctly part of this wine with a slate(y) minerality and hint of licorice. Sweet tobacco and dried plum were on the finish for me which was quite long.
An impressive wine from a and impressive vintage and, you guessed it, an impressive producer.

Enjoyed with #1 or #2 on the patio tonight, celebrating finally being able to share the love of wine with friends. My first experience with this wine and colour me converted. Lovely nose of dark fruit, huckleberry jam, cigar box, tilled soil, sage. Hits the palate a bit thin but the body builds to a crescendo. Plenty of acidity and well integrated tannins. Long finish with lingering notes of dark chocolate covered cherries, an unexpected dessert! Thanks for sharing the experience.

...it's been a month since my last one of these. excellent again. opened and sipped this straight out of the cellar so it needed a few minutes to come up in temp before all its qualities were on full display. much like the last bottle, this impresses with its big dark berry fruit up front and woody, spicy, tobacco and tarry notes in support. soft and plush, it finishes long.

wow. i happened upon this in a small local liquor store and hummed and hawed about picking it up because it was stored standing upright (and who knows for how long?!). sure enough, the cork came apart during extraction. the wine unharmed though. stunning. really impressive nose of blackberries, currants, asian spices, damp earth, tar. it's rich, full bodied and perfectly balanced from start to finish.

Nearly pitch black core with a dark red rim. Power is the word on this one. Good balance of dark fruit & tannic grip. Delineated & layered. Dark plummy fruit & earthy character emerges in the mid palate. Spicy, oaky notes are strong & can't be denied.
The oak distracts from the wine and airtime improves it considerably. It rounds into a tasty claret-like wine. It was difficult to track Grenache character as this had the dark brooding power in front of other components. Aging very well & should continue to improve.

Not what I recall from a few years ago. Dry earth, light black fruit and faint background licorice on the nose. Tannins have mellowed, however overall the palate has largely dried up with some sweet red fruit and earth. High acid and no real finish. Decanted 1 hour, consumed intermittently over the following two. Was better after two hours than initially but this wine (or this bottle at least) will not be measurably better with either more bottle or air time.

Priorat (Jeff K's): Ruby/purple in color. The nose is earth with black raspberries and some cedar. This seemed thinner that most. Tart cherries on the palate. Slightly clipped. With air, it picks up body and length. Also some raspberries emerge. This needs air at this point to show what it has. Not sure how good it can be though.

Deep nose of black fruits, anise, eucalyptus, blackberry, black raspberry, scorched earth, oak. Very good, but not (from memory and my prior note) what I remember from a couple of years back....I remain skeptical about the ageworthiness of these wines, as their youthful fruit seems to be what they really have to offer. I'll save my last couple for science, but based on my experience to date I'd say you're lucky if you enjoyed it young....Dense, extracted fruit--strawberry and blackberry compote, a hint of raisin, but not a "hot" wine (alcohol not noticeable), but it is a big, syrupy, jammy thing....

The bottom half of this wine is getting dark and ugly. Nose is rich and full of fruit, color is deep dark purple but once in your mouth it drops like a rock. Feels like a roller coaster heading to a bad wine. Drink up!

Dark almost black inky purple. Fine sediments but no other obvious signs of aging (with controlled cellaring). I agree with others' observations that the nose is subdued, but the palate presents lush integrated notes of blackberry preserves, raspberry, vanilla, dark cocoa powder, moderately heavy but integrated oak tannins, and a super long finish. A big rich compelling wine. I will hold my next and last bottle until at least 2017 because I think some age will allow the nose to develop and the rich fruit to subdue, but it is quite good now.

Spanish Wines with some heavy hitters (Becky's House): Very dark red-garnet hued. Nose is somewhat reticent, shyly showing vanilla, blackberry, black raspberry, blueberry, spices, oak. The palate really shines with rich, full bodied flavors, black and blue fruits, pepper, spices, fine tannins, long finish. If this nose catches up with the palate, this will be a stunner.

Deep purple. Reticent nose of cherry and blackberry. Expansive with notes of cherry that coat the entire palate. Nice acidity with dusty tannins. Built to age. Some heat in the back end but this will improve when it all comes together. 50+7+9+18+8=92+

Too young. This thing needs time. This is a massive, massive wine. Unreal extraction. If given time to develop some nuance, this would be unreal. No doubt the fruit will hold up, but will that balance ever come? The alcohol hits you on the head like a hammer, only the tastiness of the mixed fruit slushie in front of you makes you forgive that flaw. Not my style, and much bigger than some other vintages I have had, but it does have an allure and is very tasty. This would rock with some barbecue ribs from the grill.

Intense nose yet displaying finesse. Aromas of ripe, fresh raspberries, minerality, licquorice, and flowers. Big, tannic, and young in the mouth with bright red and black fruits and potential to age and improve another 10 to 20 years. Paired for the second course during a dinner at Phil's with short ribs in paprika and wine sauce, served with roasted garlic potatoe purée au Saint-Paulin.

First try at my 2004 and way too young. Obviously massively powerful but with full throttle acidity to back it up. This must have a bunch of carignan it in or be acidified. In any case, still a beautiful bottle but I think a two year wait is in order until another attempt is made.

Drank side-by-side with a 2002 Dominus Estate, and the Mas Doix blew the Dominus away, at least at this stage of development. This wine is very accessible now, is complex, and has the wonderful subtle sweetness that I love so much in great Priorat wines. A very subtle, but complex wine. Feminine. Our waiter noticed raspberries on the nose, and the dinner group declared this wine of the night. Yummy stuff.

Weekend in the Bay Area: 97 insignia, 04 Matriarch, 05 Seven Stones, and much more! (Bay Area): What a complete difference to the 97 insignia and 04 Matriarch. Nose consisted of violets, tar, and licorice. Definitely tasted too young as the wine was a bit simple. Roy mentioned this had VA when I poured it for him to try the next day. Prime Rib and CA Cabs go better than Prime Rib and young Priorat.

Wonderful yet early priorat. Evolved over 3 hours, but agree with prior reviewers that this wine is 3 years + from really drinking well. Dark fruit came into balance with fine tannins over the course of the evening. Dense berry and menthol nose was ultimately the most impressive quality of this outstanding wine.

What a powerhouse packed in the form of a newborn. Huge jammy flavors of strawberry, raspberry and giant cranberry with notes of raisin and plum. Firm tannins should guarantee that this one ages gracefully for many, many years. I will be holding off on popping another bottle for at least 3-5 years. This is a must own for any hedonist.

I give it a 93 only because it is so young. Robbing the cradle... We drank this far too soon. It was still tons of fun but don't confuse this with high school sex. The Jammyness is offset by fish-lip tannins that let you know this could be a 97 someday.

For $100 great stuff. Coffee, spices, raspberries, floral and ripe fruits. A big style wine and should age for 10 plus years from now. Super long, complex finish. 94 -96.

Decanted 3.5+ hours. Anise, gingerbread, earth, pine needles, sweet red fruit, bittersweet dark chocolate. Overall rich and well-balanced. Tannins are a little strong but not harsh.

Highly Rated Rhones and a Few More (Shari's house, Mpls, MN): Very dark purple-red color. Decanted for 3.5hrs. Drank 1 glass over 1.5hrs. Deep nose of black fruits, anise, eucalyptus, blackberry, black raspberry, scorched earth, oak. The palate is dense and chewy, blackberry, black raspberry, glycerin, licorice, scorched earth, tar, full bodied but not heavy. Shows a little heat on the palate that largely blows off. Impressive depth.

Inky dark ruby. Full nose explodes with black mineral, black fruit and licorice. Classic Priorat aromatics. A wow Palate! Delivers copious amounts of big black fruit across a precisely structured frame that provides balance and length. Very long, penetrating finish. Terrific showing.

Very nice fruit and concentration. Drinks well at the moment. Taste is dominated by classic dark fruit with graphite and kirsch. Well balanved, looong finish! After a bit of air the wine fell apart and was much less enjoyable.

Spanish Wine Tasting (LAN, Muga, Resalte, Mas Doix...) (Becky's House): Wow wine! Dark red with blueberries, earth, minerals and spices. More elegant than the 2004 Muga and this will need some more cellar time. Medium to long finish and balanced. Great acidity. 94+

Liquid mineral, herb, Christmas spice nose that is more restrained than the Laurel. Dark chocolate, acid, clean metal, racy palate with a dry incense and egg nog finish. This is serious but really quite balanced and refined already.

50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 14 + Smaak / Afdronk: 14 + Algemeen / potentieel: 7 = 90/100
