Plenty of smoke, turf, caramel and bitter almonds with decent intensity and precision. Fruit of bitter orange. This was quite interesting, but the palate was unfortunately rather flat, not showing the same level of complexity with a difficult, rough texture.

This is my first Palo Cortado style sherry. It looks divine- pale amber in the glass. The nose offers up nuts, yeasty notes from Flor, caramel and toffee with dried orange rind. It has quite a bitter entry with exotic flavors I have never come across. Dry with medium (+) acidity and a full body, this wine coats my mouth with tangy yeast and nuts with a citrus twist. It’s unique for sure and offers a glimpse into another style of winemaking that is quite different- google Palo Cortado, you’ll see what I mean. The fortification of this wine makes it a touch hot on the back end but I am really enjoying the nutty finish with that very singular Flor component. I paid $26 to get this bottle- it rated 90 with the pros, who am I to argue? 4 stars. Drink upon opening

Medium brown in color. Bruised apple, raisins, coffee, vanilla extract, brown sugar, bitter marmalade, and roasted walnuts. Tartness, saline, and a savory almost umami aspect on the palate. Dry with medium plus acidity. The finish is a lingering tartness and umami on the tongue.

Nose: polished wood furniture, almond peel, slightly burnt hair (think hot blow drier gotten too close). I agree with the figs.
Palate: like liquefied molasses, slightly burnt, but only the mineral and earthy aspect of it, nothing sugary at all, only some citrus. Dry rusty finish, subtle cask sweetness, more sour than dry actually, a slight, petrolic bitterness.
Compared to the Olorosos I know a little lacking in concentration and too petrolic. Probably peaked on day 3 when I was almost convinced, but finishing it tonight on day 9, I think I can safely say I won't buy again. Seems like sherry other than full on oloroso is not my thing, though.

Absolutely delicious with lots of figs, candided walnuts, pecans, and some quince jelly notes. Very creamy on the palate, but it's dry and doesn't leave an overly oily feeling in the mouth. Holds its 19 degrees of alcohol very well. Perfect for a charcuterie plate and almonds.

Clarence's Birthday 2015 (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Apppearance is clear, pale intensity, brown colour. Long legs. Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with lots of oxidative notes and aromas of dried fruits, dried tea leaves, sweet caramel, salty minerals, and nuttiness. Developed. On the palate, dry (although the nose seems sweet), high acidity, high alcohol (19%), full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of saline salt, bitter orange peel, nuts, dried apricots. Very long finish. Very high quality Palo Cortado sherry. Enjoy this.

Superb wine, and insanely well priced. This wine rocks!
Huge aroma of several dried fruits, a bit of burnt hair and nuts. Smells sweet, is dry. In the mouth this is amazing! Raisins racing with the nuts but the burnt aromas win all tropgies when it comes to endurance. Finish lasts for minutes! It's glorious! Layers of taste that are rather complex. The finish is mega long. Perfectly balanced acids and all parts of this wine come together in perfect harmony. Rich fruit and some indian curry and distinct cumin.
This is a wine to enjoy with anything tasty. Have had it with miso soup and it did well. With Cup Ramen (shrimp taste and chilli) and some fried chicken it made a perfect marriage. Drank it with sushi and that was ... I prefer other things with sushi. Another evening it divorced MacD burgers but married the MacD fries. This evening only a small glass left for a personal tasting event. Wanted cured ham and sausages, but that will be for the next encounter.
Does nothing good for wife: frowns only.
Only btl, sure to get more of these bottled gems.

Sight: Clear, day bright, brown-gold, no room variation Nose: Salty sesame, nuts, slighty musty (like fino), naturally wood indicators, alcohol Palate: medium- high to high body, strong saline notes, bone dry, heavily salted nuts, saline Finnish as opposed to acidic finish General: like a middle ground between admontillado and manzanilla, tastes like a fino/manzanilla with finish like admontillado oloroso

Amber +3 color. Nose of roasted apricot, peach, toasted nuts, caramel and burnt sugar cake, black peppercorn, in a well-oxidized character. On arrival, bone dry and vivid acidity. In the mouth, fruity and woody and sweet-sour. Delicious. Paired well to wild mushroom soup, tahini and homemade crusty Italian style bread (an improved Emeril Lagasse recipe). The bottling strength is deceptive - taster beware ! Bottle #1 of one.

Very enjoyable. More high pitched nose than the Oloroso. Citrus, white raisins, fruit cake . Nuttiness is more in the direction of cashews. Ligher mouthfeel, a bit more acidity. Citrus, more in the direction of candied orange peel (but again, no residual sugar), returns at the end of the long finish.

Very dark for a palo cortado. For me, that's a shame. This leans very far into the oloroso spectrum, and the biological aging/flor characteristics that a good PC should have are largely masked by the brooding oxidative characteristics typical of oloroso. This is a bargain and delicious, I just would like a little more saline and mineral edge to cut through the walnut and caramel notes.

Caramel on the nose; on the palate, caramel, hazelnuts, and notes of orange peel, vanilla, and molasses, with a salty finish and a touch of alcoholic heat, but practically no sweetness. A good match with pears and goat cheese, but it would probably be even better with salted nuts and blue cheese, or maybe caramel and chocolate. A good value at $25 all in.

Clear and bright, medium amber colour and presence of legs. The nose is clean and fully developed, showing pronounced intensity aromas of prunes, hazelnuts, caramel, coffee, brown sugar and deliberate oxidation. The wine is dry with a low flabby acidity, high alcohol, medium+ body and pronounced intensity flavours of prunes, caramel, hazelnuts, coffee and deliberate oxidation. Long finish.
It is a very good quality wine showing typicity, with a nice flavour concentration and a lingering finish, but it could be even more complex. Drink now, not suitable for ageing, the wine is already fully developed and will not improve in the bottle.

Dry (much drier than I expected), very briny, and somewhat nutty. Woody without being oaky. Good by itself, but I think I should be eating olives and jamon with this one. Finish is just a little short. 19% alcohol.
(Just a little later:) So I got some olives, and the pairing works well. The olives bring out the nutty flavors in the Palo Cortado.
Addendum: after 6 days in a half-full bottle, the wine has become richer and nuttier, more of what I expect in a Palo Cortado.

A Champagne tasting (and a Sherry) (My Home): Iced tea in color. The nose is gorgeous with caramel and nuts and a hint of citrus rind. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is different. Dry. Slightly nutty. The flavors intensify as it gets closer to the finish. Long nutty finish. There is some alcohol on the finish. Worked better with nuts and dates and Manchego cheese than on its own. Still, I thought an interesting starter for a Champagne tasting.

I'm starting to really enjoy this style of Sherry. Subtle on the nose like an amontillado, and rich on the palate like an Oloroso. There's a lovely bitter chocolate note along with almonds and hazelnuts. Very well balanced.

Amber +1 color. Nose of roasted almonds, caramel, mint, mineral notes. Tangy on entry, develops piquant pink peppercorn flavor to complement those joined from the nose. Savory, dry, dusty; complemented bowls of wild mushroom soup well, as it really brought great lift to the aromatic veg elements (parsley, thyme). Ordered by the glass from wine list, presumably an open bottle.

Lot: L2180 (which I take to mean that this was bottled on the 180th day [June 28] of 2012)
Color: Mahogany, fading to caramel at the edge.
Nose: Fig Newton, toffee, salted caramel, creme brulee, iodine, and a whiff of alcohol.
Mouthfeel: Smooth and oily but not heavy.
Palate: Dry despite the dessert-like nose, dominated by beautiful walnut in the mouth with a drizzle of honey. There's also some raisiny/fig dried fruit and brown sugar / maple syrup without the sweetness. It's let down a bit by the finish, though, which is a tad alcoholic and drops off, not delivering the lingering savory salted caramel flavor that many fine oxidative sherries do.
Good not great sherry that comes off more like a run-of-the-mill oloroso rather than displaying the caught-in-the-middle tension of a proper palo cortado.

NV Emilion Lustau Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Solera Reserva Palo Cortado Península, L2129, 097985 277008, 19 p alcohol by volulme, bottled by Emilio Lustau, SA, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, DO QKV 8607908. a Christopher Cannan Selection, imported by Europvin US, Van Nuys, California.
From a bottle opened 2 days and kept in the refrigerator mostly.
T-Cork. Drunk from smallish white wine glasses.
Very sheety-clingy wine with a very little tearing, over a tawny green-brown, infinitesimally less than fully bright.
Nose emphasizes brine and beef vegetable soup, lead into by a little floral rubber or plastic resin and winter apple on the exit. Sometimes this is joined by a touch of vanilla cookie.
Rich, energetic, elegantly tannic skin tones, with delicate balance between caramel and wet stones. Style is crisp and vivid. Definitely has become more expressive sine it's been opened for two days.
Compared with another Lustau Palo Cortado sherry, the NV Almacenista Palo Cortado de Jerez Sherry, Solera Matured byh Vides, Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, 1/50. Shipper Emilio Lustau SA, 19 percent by volume, $26/750. L6307, A Christopher Cannan selection, for Europvin USA, Van Nuys, CA. $26/750 ml, Macarthur. LACKS MACHINE READABLE BIN NUMBER. 50 CASES made but there have evidently been several releases--suppose this is an earlier release. T-corked.
A distinctly less red-tawny with more green in it, with a quite clear edge even when standing up. Thick sheeting with little or no tearing. Very clear and vivid coloration, quite bright and refractive.
Smells of some acid, with very slight volatility with beef broth. Roasted root vegetables--carrots, potatos, turnips. A bit of linseed oil Very delicate nose.
Gentle entry leading to vivid mid-palate skin tones, some tannin; wonderful clean tertiary sherry tones, suggesting protracted bottle age. Somewhat monotonic but very clear, full and, persistent apple-peel finish. Drink now-2022.
92+/100.
A delight to drink this mature palo cortado. Would be a good idea to compare it with a more recent release.

As with Don Nuno, I find a lot of bottle variation with this label, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Nutty and minerally like the Nuno and Escuadrilla, this meets the PC expectation of being right in between them. Orange notes are prominent, and a kind of chocolatey-ness as well. Finishes dryer than the nose leads one to believe.

How does such a rich and treacle-ly wine finish dry? That's the magic of sherry. Palo Cortado is supposedly fino that loses its protective veil of yeast part way through the aging process, so it is refortified and aged like an Oloroso from then onwards. The result is a sherry that's drier than an Amontillado, but fresher/nuttier tasting than a typical Oloroso seco.
The issue is that these days, the sherry houses have much tighter process standards, so the conditions that would lead to a traditional Palo Cortado rarely/never occur anymore. I suspect that Lustau's Palo Cortado Peninsula was no accident, but fino that was purposely re-purposed to create a Palo-Cortado-like result.
The authenticity police might complain, but this is a wonderful wine in spite of (or perhaps because of) this artifice. A meal on its own, Lustau's Peninsula is warm, long, full, slightly acidic (citrus peel) and woody. As with most sherries, the quality greatly surpasses the price. I consider it a great alternative to single malt scotch, with all the complexity, but without the headache.

Toffee and a hint of nuts on the nose. Toffee and apricots upfront, without the sweetness of either. Tinge of acid upfront, the very mild hazelnut hangs on and on after all the other flavors have quickly fled.

Had this at Nopa. My first Palo Cortado and my 2nd dry sherry. I really liked this one; there was a lot going on. Nutty aromas, but at the same time had a citrus thing going on, and maybe some dried apricots too. Overpowered any food it came into contact with, but on its own was really complex and interesting.

Not bad at all. My expectations were very low so this PC has been better. Clear and strong chocolate bar or toffee aromas. Dark caramel/orange colour. It was dry but not as it used to be. Less artificial than it seems. According with my own experience, just fair for an everyday Palo Cortado. Does that concept exist?

On opening, drier than expected. Not nearly the sweetness or nuttiness of the Oloroso I was looking for. But good complexity. Not sure it stands up to nuts or cheese after dinner. Interesting wine, but a new one for me.

My second Palo Cortado, I find this stuff like the ultimate adult dessert. Drunk over the period of a week, about 2 ounces at a serving. Poured cold and gently warmed to room temperature while sipping. Beautiful transparent honey color, concentrated caramel, nuts and toffee at the nose, adding molasses and honey on the palate. The first few days this was accompanied by a slightly searing acidity when cold and almost overpowering fragrance of fruit cake when warmer. After a few days it became calmer, a total concentrated treat of confectionery flavors, but without the sweetness! Huge and long finish, overpowering anything else put into the mouth for at least a couple of minutes. I am captivated, despite this obviously being unfriendly to most foods; probably best with full-flavored cheese or sausage, or perhaps a dense spice cake.

appears caramel-brown, beautifully reflective, smell fabulous nose, sweet nuts, barely any alcohol on nose, intense pecan pie, mouthwatering, smidge of butterscotch-toffee, carmelized fruit, this is what I call a seductive nose, mouthfeel is smooth and slippery, taste is not as sweet as nose would suggest, big super spicy-spice, fiery at times, clean, the cleanness of the finish is amazing, it combines the intense concentration of raisinesque flavors with the juiciest most succulent fruit you’ll find, superfresh, great fun. Thought the label suggests you can consume it chilled or at room temperature, I strongly preferred it at room temperature—the flavors really came out to play. The superfresh qualities dimmed after a few days in the fridge, but otherwise held up quite well for a week.

Sight: Clear, day bright, brown-gold, no room variation
Nose: Salty sesame, nuts, slighty musty (like fino), naturally wood indicators, alcohol
Palate: medium- high to high body, strong saline notes, bone dry, heavily salted nuts, saline Finnish as opposed to acidic finish
General: like a middle ground between admontillado and manzanilla, tastes like a fino/manzanilla with finish like admontillado oloroso

88/100. Drink now--2025.
