2014 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

  • PNP and good to go with a bit of swirling. Finding the 14s and 12s from Piedmont very appealing right now. Roses and tar, very floral with lighter body than some of the ‘better’ vintages, but yet with good grip. A pleasant 13.5% ABV

  • Beautiful floral nose. Medium (less than expected) intensity of nose and flavor.

  • Really great example of Barolo! I opened and decanted. I decided to try a bit of the wine immediately after decantation (sounds like I'm reverse summoning a wine spirit), I was greeted with a bouquet of cherries, raspberries, wet clay, and a hint of smoke. It was delicious, if a little tight--but what can you expect with a Barolo at the young age of 9 years??

We let it decant for about an hour and a half and went back to it. We were blown away with the added depth. All the above were still present (maybe the cherry smell was a dark cherry now?) with strawberries and menthol coming through. The longer we waited, the more we got: plums, cherry medicine (in a good way I swear), wet soil, even some peppery notes--and the we even smelled and tasted some honey notes! I was surprised at that!

Vietti stuns again. No wonder they are a benchmark Nebbiolo producer. The tannins were strong but somehow smooth, expertly integrated. I felt like I was transported to Piedmont, sitting in my Chateau admiring an Italian sunset. I imagined cobblestone streets, Mediterranean air, and felt fully jealous of my half-brother's Italian lineage. (And also that he is taller than me but I'll leave that part short).

Excellent wine, but could still do with 10 years in the bottle if you wanted.

  • Medium body, transparent brick-cherry colour. Intense aroma of red fruits, flowers and toasted wood. Wild strawberry, red currants and frozen cranberry palate following by juicy finish of good length, wild berries acidity and muscular tannins. Complex, harmonious and balanced wine. Food friendly, well pairing to Mediterranean salad and goat cheeses. Not ready, start drink in couple years or open four hours ahead. Serve 18ºC - 20ºC. Should be enjoyable 12/15 years, perhaps longer.

Skarp.

  • Singapore lunch at dame de pic at Raffles. Popped it from the bottle over their lunch menu by their sympathic sommelier. Quite a fruity nose, blackcurrant, cherry, spice, mushroom, earth, forest floor, and must. Med acidity, Med body, Med alcohol, Med flavor intensity, Med tannins, Med+ finish. Fruity, still a bit austere, not yet fully integrated structure, nice tertiary notes as per the nose. Very nice wine but still a bit young. Excellent showing already!

  • Really opens, give it a chance. Too brawny, and linear for my taste. Not really feeling the freshness I've come to expect in this bottling. At first. Be sure to give this some air to get it fully jump started. My rating in the first few minutes was a full notch below where this ended up. For its full potential, it's highly recommended

  • Lovely color. The nose shows cool aromas of dark fruits, rose, star anise, herbs, spices and a hint of minerals. This is medium bodied on the palate with good concentration and very good class. The medium plus length finish features integrated tannins and spice notes.

  • Still a bit young but very drinkable now

  • Rose, Lilly of The Valley, violet, marzipane, some licorice and tar, menthol. Dark cherry, orange peel. Wounderful bouquet right now, in the mouth of course not as giving at this stage. Dusty tannins and high acidity.

  • Rustic off the bat with some grainy tannins. Developed well over the next few hours - best after a couple of hours decant then in the glass. Just good, unfussy, enjoyable barolo. Medium to full - not too heavy for family Sunday lunch. Nice length at the end. Everyone enjoyed

  • Mer slank och burgundisk än jag minns den. Härlig komplex doft och elegant strama tanniner balanserar snyggt mot rosor, bär och nypon.

  • One of those wines that drinks very well even quite young. It's not perhaps as 'special' as the single vineyard wines from this maker, but it is a well done every day wine and good for a large group of folks which is what we had on this night.

  • Dark crimson color with cooper meniscus. Fabulous aromatics: cranberry, sour cherry, red raisins, tobacco, earth. Tart red fruits (cranberry, sour cherry) on the palate. Fine grained tannins add backbone. Good acidity - absolutely killed with a bolognese sauce. Splash decanted, but needs at least an hour in the glass (or better, a full decant) to really show its stuff.

  • Is well worth twice the price of the Vietti Nebbiolo Langhe I had. Medium body and medium tannin that is well developed. Earth, mild smoke, leather, spice, red and dark fruit. Good now or cellar.

  • One of the recommended Barolo producers in our days, this "entry level" high class bottling is always convincing, really fresh and energetic, delicious savoury sour cherry fruit, midbodied elegant flow, some meaty and spicy aromas, long puristic typical Barolo finish, very good showing, will improve for sure, 90,91(+) potential

  • Ruby with slight orange tinges
N: Red fruits (strawberries and red cherries). Iron and brine.
P: high acid, medium body, medium tannin that intensified over time. Very slight smoke and leather. Wet leaves, tar and spicy herbs. Long finish.

  • The nose showed a gorgeous mix of crushed strawberry and cherry, giving way to smoky, sweet herbal tones, roses, and a hint of peppery spice. On the palate, I found soft, pliant textures offset by bright acids and minerals, showing young strawberry and sweet inner floral tones. The finish was long, as tannins slowly mounted with each sip, and resonating on pretty florals, sweet red berries and hints of spice. The Castiglione is a bit shy today, but it was a pop and pour and likely to fill out if given the proper time to do so.

  • This was really fantastic and showed well, if this is indicative of 14 Barolo I’ll happily buy more, does not have the same tannin or depth I usually get from such a young Barolo but what I did get what high toned, dark red berries, purple florals, hints of earthy minerals on the nose, palate is relatively light bodied with fine integrated tannins, high acidity and a relatively good finish, for the price I’ll buy more and more of this!

  • Discovering more and more some wines from the Piemont, years ago this was not my style of wine, but since a year or so I really enjoy them, so this bottle is a try from the biggest italian retail shop, I think in the whole of Germany, this owner even runs two big stores in our city of Hamburg, reasonable price tag, about 40€ per bottle, pnp, the whole range of aromas, BUT... at first needs at least two hours of aeration, some mushrooms, forest soil.....wet, delicious cassis, red more than black, still young and a little adstringend, but on the other hand great tension and in the finish demanding acidity, would recommend to wait at least 5(+) years or pair it with some meaty dish! *(**-****- *?), 90- 92(+) potential

  • Ruby to dark red. Lovely floral, parfum, spice, tabac. Great aroma, nice intensity. Initial taste was fairly big and chewy but once dinner arrived was a great compliment to steak and mash. Pleasant to linger with. Pleasant fruit and intensity but overall thought palate a little light /chewy relative to aroma. Liked nonetheless!

  • Love when this rolls in to Costco town...still under $40, and delicious as ever! Supposedly there is a lot of declassified Ravera and Brunate in this...the 14 is a pretty, med bodied, translucent red berry fruity...open for biz! Tannins are dusty and giving, letting the wonderful sweet cherry spice and dried flower florals to shine, yet still commanding the Barolo grip. LOVE the subtleties and dryness in this...yet still vibrant and juicy with tart cherry and pomegranate fruit, dried orange/roses, sweet tar, salty minerals. Drink now, or cellar for 10+. Huge qpr!

  • Initial nose of herbal mushroom soil: Earthen, no fruit really, some floral and some tar.
Palate of complex array of earthen softness, leaves, herbs with soft spices evolving very long finish.
    As it opened:
Salty, savory, dry, spicy, herbal spicy, flowers, mushroom/truffle, orange/lemon rind and tar.
Color of translucent garnet to rose.
    Lamb brought out dirty aspects.
    Oak popped out.
The dirt and tar were very enjoyable.

I was very surprised at how ready to drink this was. That's 2014 for you. It will age well for 10 years, but really nice to drink now.

It had building tarry tannins that carried over to each sip with fantastic grip and citrus rind.

    $40 at Costco.
Just tasted a series of 2014 Barolo and saw this, so decided to pair with my lamb.

  • Made with some declassified fruit from what was salvageable from Brunate and a good chunk of Ravera. This was pretty immediately appealing upon opening, with some up front fruit but not heavy at all, the tannins are very plush and powdery, spreading across the palate very easily. There's a bit of sweetness to the fruit, and as I was about to write it off as not such a good pair with food, it showed interesting white spices and an herbal, savory streak, flashing good complexity. It's definitely more than an entry level Barolo this year, as you'd expect with all the declassified fruit.

  • Very elegant and, at the same time, strong wine.
Powerful aromas of blackberries and roses. Delicious.

  • Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): Interesting to try this in the vertical. It was in my list of favorites although I realize 2014 wasn't the best year. There's something a bit more refined about it than some of the others. It's 'shy' in a way, not quite as expressive, but with a bit of depth that makes you think there's more still to come. Higher on the tannin side, but also somehow a clear and clean flavor. Almost a crispness to it. Pretty.

  • Straits Wines - Vietti Wine Tasting (La Brasserie, Fullerton Bay Hotel): pale ruby; acidic, tannic, good intensity, full bodied, with blackberry, cloves, liquorice, grassy, earthy

  • Ordered off the wine list at La Masseria. This was really quite open and easy for a young barolo. Pnp'ed. Nice balance with the fruit and the more earthy style. Went very well with a truffle pasta.

  • This is a 2014 Barolo, and how much does it cost? I could think of no better way to open this tasting note, as the ‘14 Castiglione is a rock star in its price point. The nose showed a thrust of crushed stone minerality and hints of smoke up front, yet it then opened to a display of woodland red berry fruit, wild herbs, and sweet-and-savory spice with rosy florals. On the palate, I found soft textures offset by tart red berries and energizing, brisk acidity boosting an almost salty character, as inner floral tones developed toward the finale. The finish was long, showing a combination of saturating red fruits, perfectly integrated fine tannin, balanced acidity and lingering minerality. You could drink this now because of its verve and mineral-acid mix, yet I can’t help but think that the 2014 will age beautifully on its sheer balance.

  • Wow!

  • 2018 Visit to Vietti (Castiglione Falletto): Vietti made no Brunate in 2014, so the salvageable grapes from there, and some from Ravera, are in this wine. Attractive red fruited aromatics, raspberries, red cherries and even some strawberries, spices and rose florals. Only medium bodied. Very accessible, seemingly ready to go now (but I’d probably give it another 2+ years in bottle). Very elegant and refined. Sleek, fine tannins and good fresh acidity. At normal pricing it would be good value for money.

  • Comes across immediately more muscular on the nose than the Perbacco. A hint of tobacco, earth; nice elegance on the palate, refined tannins. Fruit matches the tannic frame better here. Almost masks the tannins but not quite. Great length.

  • Surprised by some harsh reviews thus far; I found this quite generous for the vintage, loads of roses, candied quality but very savory, wild strawberry and soft red cherry, soft cedar and sweet wood notes, high toned with latent structure I think this will put on some nice weight over the coming couple years.

  • Holiday at Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld; 7/24/2018-7/25/2018 (Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld): Berry, spice, earthy, cedar, black plums on the nose. Mouth watering acidity with plummy fruit and tight tannins. Good but very young.

  • Thin, lacking flavor. Not at all what I expect from a Barolo.

  • (at Eno Vino West - Madison) Was not all that impressed with this bottle. Yes, I know it is young but it came across as thin, and acidic with sharp edges. Will give some benefit of the doubt but not convinced it will ever really please. (85?)
