Good cork pull and no infiltration, good heady bouquet right from the start. Medium burgundy. Classic Russian River. Cherry but not heavy, and darker fruit. But great soil. Slightly numbing but not due to mint, it's the RR profile. Very nice. Very much ready now. hard to see it getting better. Something I like so very much about RR pinot, and compared to other producers RR, Kosta has the most distinctive taste. And it's all here.

Dark crimson in color. 14.1% ABV. Magnificent nose of red, cloves, sarsaparilla and forest floor. Medium to full bodied with exquisite acidity. Rich and plush with earthy fruits and minerals. Black cherry, cranberry, pomegranate and earth on the palate. The finish is long and silky. This Pinot Noir is really in it's sweet spot right now. Best over the next 1-2 years.

Imbibed as part of a 4 year vertical of RR bottlings including 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2020. This was some folks favorite, including mine. Showed more fruit and identifiable as a younger vintage. A bit more briar and bramble, wilder spices and just a bit more intensity at this stage.

Russian river valley is one of our favorite regions for Pinot noir. Cranberry red color. Tart cherry and cranberry with a sweet hint of strawberry and blood orange and citrus rind. Ruby red grapefruit. Extreme bright, lively wine and just one of those wines you could drink all day. Exciting journey 5 years in and many years to go.
p.s. sous vide chicken finished on the grill with steam oven cauliflower and a side of steamed cabbage and hamhocks.

Dark cherry with slight minerality flavors; aromas of about the same with addition of slight floral. The standard KB balance of tannins, acidity, and alcohol with oak under pinnings make for a very nice pinot. This pinot I put in the mild of the pack as for as strength of body, not the lightest and not the heaviest, just mild and smooth.

Classic KB on the nose: cherry and vanilla, but this one drinks different than ones I’ve had in the past. Feels like a more delicate KB, less plush & bold, more complexity and even ethereal. Plums, figs, thyme, cinnamon. A tad savory, but still California sunshine in the fruit.
Some may find this a bit light to what they normally expect from KB, but I’m digging it.

Mild on the nose, but became more expressive after about 30 minutes in glass. Dark cherry. Not the “bright” Pinot like others from the west coast. More subdued; even dark, maybe for a PN?

Well-balanced Pinot drinking well now. Savory blue fruits, with good structure and a nice finish. A bit to sweet/ripe for my tastes, but well made. Terrible QPR though.

Dark cherry fruit and cola notes. After an hour decant soft spice on the finish but just not as expressive and explosive as other Russian River vintages. While very good, hoping this will evolve and get better over time.

Side by side tasting of the 2016 Russian River Valley, Santa Rita Hills and Sonoma Coast bottlings.
The SRH has by far the most expressive nose of explosive wild cherries and strawberries. The wine is extremely juicy and fruit forward. Bright cherries, licorice and loam. Mouth-coating viscosity and a real purity and depth of flavors. Delicious and impossible to put down. 92+
The RRV is the most restrained of the 3. It is more closed and with more noticeable tannins. Dark cherry fruit and chocolate notes. The finish is shorter than the SRH and SC. 90
The SC is more approachable than the RRV although does not have the same explosive nose as the SRH. Beautiful nose of red cherries with a sense of elegance and balance. Superfine silky tannins. Finish is medium length. 91

It has been a year since I had this and it has fleshed out a bit more and gained weight and texture. The red fruits included cherry and red plum. A bit of spice was present and I felt it was a bit more interesting and complex compared to my prior notes. Being a big RRV fan I found this very enjoyable and easy to drink.

Decanted 2 hours prior to drinking. Dark cherry, subdued cola notes and some tea notes on the finish. Really seemed to get better while watching and betting on the horses as it is the only sport running. Cousin Pudge enjoyed also but was not overwhelmed by the wine. Can drink now with decant or hold for 2-5 years. Very nice RRV Pinot.

Delicious starting out with notes of dark cherry and plum and hints of bergamot - the palate comes with some intensity for a Pinot but at the same is incredibly balanced and represents why I fell for KB in the first place; sure there is extraction here, but it doesn’t overwhelm the softness and nuance of the varietal. This is neither a massive VV nor does it have the overwhelmingly powerful fruits of some of the Martinelli offerings, but this is a quintessential representation of KB Pinot - and one that I will be happy to have again - it is stunning and so well composed and balanced on day 2 as well. For me, the hallmark of a really good wine is the feeling of loss when the bottle is empty, and I am indeed missing it now! This is likely my favorite appellation wine they produce.

The nose is almost decadent with ripe strawberries, some cola spice, rhubarb pie, river rock and white chocolate. A long finish and an almost cashmere texture, with a savory aftertaste. Decant or wait a year, and follow for at least seven. There’s almost a touch of pine at the very end. Drink 2020 - 2027.

Over two days. Have known of and wanted to taste KB wines, but preferring Burgundy over New World Pinot Noir, the price point never justified my curiosity. Found this half for $25 and could not walk away.
It made an impression on the first day, fragrant, high-pitched, lifted, and smooth. The wine also showed very good textures and reasonably good balance, as alcohol was certainly noticeable though not overt. No real expression of place, other than hints of manipulation, moderate oak treatment, enjoyable finish.
Unfortunately, the wine had begun falling apart on the second day. Most of the perfume had faded, showing mostly alcohol instead. The same held true on the palate, with alcohol generating a slow burn. An interesting experience, which I have no need to repeat.
The score is based on the wine's best showing on the first day.

A very nice appellation offering from KB. Continued shift in wine making style, with this being more medium weight and more elegant than the more extracted historical offerings. This provides a bit more finesse and elegance, highlighting the red fruit and still offering tremendous mouthfeel. The flavors were a bit more muted, and bit light on the attack, although it did fill out with some time in the glass. Quality is till very evident, but for this appellation offering I think the price point is creeping higher than other worthy contenders.

Pale purple in color. Not as aromatic as the KB Sonoma Coast tasted last night. After a couple hours of air, aromas of cedar, black cherry and dustiness. On the palate, cola, raspberry and sour notes. Finish is long and a bit course. Should benefit from more aging and glad I have a couple more in the cellar.

This bottle was enjoyable for us after a couple of hours in the decanter. Soft tannins with lots of red fruit with some bing cherry and Dr Pepper like flavors. A bit one dimensional but not necessarily in a bad way as we found it to have consistency through the night which we had not been finding from the last couple of vintages of RRV. It may find greater complexity with more time in bottle but for now it is a pleasant bottle that likely everyone will find something in it to enjoy.

New world Pinot bliss. Sharp tingle of acid throughout but this only serves to accent the lush blueberry, raspberry, Bing cherry, Saskatoon, cranberry, and strawberry that comprise the fruity core. Soft, pliant tannins that one can just roll around in... A delightful whole bunch well-cured stem note that recalls pipe tobacco stuck all over a red lollipop. I’m a sucker for those whole bunches. Finish meets all known criteria for “long”, with a resplendent reprise of Saskatoon berry, black bramble, and rhubarb. This hits all the facets of Pinot Noir except “old forest floor” (it’s a 2016 after all), “serious” savoury notes of sour red fruits and herbal notes that veer toward angelica and black liquorice and “modern” dark fruits and whole bunch fireworks in approximately equal measure.

Meh and a half. Light and flaccid with no mid palate depth or appreciable finish. Real disappointment for a KB. Totally different style from previous vintages. Completely different animal from the 2015 version of this wine. Hope this vintage is an anomaly.

Just picked and unripened Cherry with evident texture and vegetable flavor. I would say that it does in fact include stems which is a very good note that I have read in others notes. I would also add that the acidity here is quite high and reminds me that I am drinking too young a wine.
Really hard to judge today but shows tremendous promise. This is especially true given the acidity. Hold for 3 years

Tasted with Coravin. First time tasting Kosta Browne.
Nose was muted with slight red fruit. Palate was thin with mineral and slight acidity but balanced. a strong spicy, bitey note in the finish, almost Tempranillo or zin like. Needs more time to develop but interesting Pinot.

90 minute decant. Tad lighter than we expect from KB. We fell in love with KB back around 2009 when they made big bold Pinot that was still well balanced and didn't tip into syrupy nonsense like Meiomi or Belle Glos. This is well made and enjoyable; it's just not the KB that grabbed our attention years ago. 91-92 range.

Still much too young. More closed on nose and palate than Sonoma Coast bottling. A bit green too. Some cherry and after time a little vanilla and spice. Should be nice in time but I have higher hopes for the 16 Sonoma Coast. Will revisit in 2020.

Medium purple with limited clarity. Nose was tight but decent aroma of red cherry and some green stem.
On the palate the wine is tight and it took an hour before it started to relax. Medium in body with red cherry, clove and oak imparted vanilla. The first hour the green stem was noticeable but not in a bad way. After an hour the green flavors subsided and it evolved into a classic KB RRV Pinot.
Yep, needs a year or two but this will be a nice KB.

Opened in the bottle for 3 hours. A little more closed off than the SC bottling. It also appears to be stemmy with the red fruit leaning on the rustic/earthy side with a nice streak of cooling minerals. Still it has some of the typical Kosta power brought on via cloves, vanilla, and orange peel. Still it’s a little flat but probably just needing a couple more years.

Agree with ELH. No depth and kinda boring. Good enough, but not great. Maybe it does need more time. Check the next one in a year.

Opened early to test drive the 2016 vintage.
