  • Second time tasting this and simply gorgeous. Round dark spicy raspberry and olive tapenade, but minty fresh, even mineral, like oyster shell. Drinking very nicely right now with long finish

  • 94/95:Last glass a 95. A profound yet lighter Beaucastel with mostly black and blue fruits, lowish oak and decent freshness and good length. Needs 8 hrs aeration and was continuously developing. 14.5%.

  • A beautiful dark ruby red. After 2 hour DD. Earthy, dark fruit and sweet tobacco on the nose. Very inviting smells. Medium body and wonderfully balanced. Long and lingering with a nice chew on it. Love it.

  • Dinner with Friends (R&R's): Double blind. Deep color. Aromas of mulberry, red fruit and herbs de Provence. Flavors of ripe red berry fruit and garrigue. Easy to pick out as Châteauneuf. A nice match for the lamb. 92+ pts. (R&R)

  • Vertical tasting of the 2003, 2012 & 2017. Varied notes amongst the group. The 2003 was a really fun and interesting drink for me (90). Really funky on the nose. Most of the fruit is gone, but enough earth and minerality with the slightly overripe fruit that was left to leave a very solid wine to me (group notes were all over the paste, with 2 folks calling it there favorite and two folks dumping it. Drink soon if you have it. Overall third out of 3. The 2012 was really nice (93) and was a prototypical CdP GSM with lots of red fruit (but not a fruit bomb) integrated with some earth and pepper elements. Clear #1 of the group of 3. The 2017 was showing a little less of the same general aspects of the ‘12 (91). Probably will benefit from a couple more years in the bottle.

  • New Year’s Eve 2023: approx. 30 minutes decanted; dark rubin red color; delicate bouquet of dark berries and cherries plus slight notes of licorice and pepper; smooth texture balanced by a fruity acidity on the palate; tannins in the cheeks. 92-93/100

  • A blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre 30%, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, and 10% of various other permitted varietals. Popped & poured, consumed over two days. Good, ripe mixed berry fruit, blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackcurrant , garrigue, lavender, pastille, chocolate, espresso, spices, black pepper, liquorice, earth, smoke, and gravelly minerality, with medium-level acidity, fine, round, well-integrated tannin and superb length. Impressive structure and concentration! Youthful and energetic, but the generous fruit and high quality tannin allow for early drinking. That said, the wine is still tight and will reward some patience. I would wait for another three years, and then drink my bottles over the following ten. A great CdP!

  • Poured at GCWCC fundraiser so limited notes. Double decanted two hours in advance. Deep purple. Aromas and flavours of dark fruits. M body, M(+) acidity, XD, M(+) tannin, high alcohol (declared 14.5%, but was a little too noticeable, especially on the palate). Hopefully this is just closed down because tasted blind against a $20 GSM blend from Roussillon, it was really no better.

  • Decanted. Proper medium plummy red colour. Gorgeous nose! Garrigue, ripe red and purple berries, patchouli, warming alcohol. Just overall warm, spicy, herbal fragrant nose. Medium full, juicy sweet ripe fruit, and lots of extract, supple tannins. Beautiful flavours of ripe mixed berries, very ripe and sweet, some spicy woody notes, lots of garrigue and a mildly grainy finish. Beautifully ripe, well rounded, long, luxurious finish. Just lovely! Easy 94 points

  • Last bottle of this was in February 2020. It showed so fresh and delicious then, shortly after release. This bottle showed similar dark, concentrated fruit, nice fine tannins, and relative nice balance. I found the 14.5% abv to show a bit more on this bottle, including on the finish, but hopefully that's just a stage it's in. The fruit is fresh and delicious and the nose is gaining complexity, with lots more in store. 93-94.

  • I usually prefer Beaucastel with more age on it, but this was quite good. Rich, but not overripe, red and black fruits, earthy, lots of space, and not yet in a dumb phase. Quite enjoyable.

  • Decided to try this to see how it's progressing. Decanted. Initial impression, meh. Mediocre at best at the moment, expect that it's in it's dumb phase. Surprising that this is the case due to all the high current scores. I'd much rather have opened a 2016 southern Rhone form just about anywhere and any price point. Hoping for future improvement. 89 (at best).

Palate- red & black fruits, savory notes with some black pepper, juicy acidity & lower minerality with medium tannins & some nicely integrated creamy oaky notes on the finish. Very nice wine that will benefit from some age.

  • 1 hour decant at hotel Le St Remy.
    Surprisingly approachable for a youngster.
Nice structure, tart red Berry, oak with some garrique.
With a little more air we’re actually enjoying this more than the 2005 we had last night.
I’ll be interested to try this wine again in 10 years. This score may improve

  • Beautiful deep ruby colour. Because it's still young, it smells tight at first, but opens up to a nice mix of red berries, cherries, blackberries, blackcurrant, leather and spices. In the mouth, the tannins smoothly grip around the mouth and give a wonderful structure where notes of black cherry, plums, blackberries evolve with savoury notes of pepper and spice. High acidity and beautiful long finish. Super dynamic wine which will be wonderful to taste in a few more years!

  • Famille Perrin tasting (Beef bar): 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counouse, 10% Vaccarese, Terret noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, 5% Cinsault
Each variety is harvested separately and manually, vinification takes place in oak fermenters for the reductive varieties (mourvedre, syrah) and in traditional enameled concrete tanks for the oxidative grapes (all the rest). Once the malolactic is finished, the different varieties are blended, then aged in oak foudres for a 1 year

The wine shows high intensity, very fruit, ripe red and black fruits, currant, cherries, plums with a touch of plank, there is alcohol heat in a spicy and earthy mix.
In the palate, the wine shows very ripe, juicy fruit, prunes, acidity with medium to full body. The alcohol is trying to blend in, with time the wine gets fruitier. Very welcoming as it is, highly drinkable

  • Deep garnet/ruby. Red fruit, cherry and garrigue on the nose. Decanted for about 1 hour. More dark berries, very mild oak. On the palate there’s some licorice next to the cherries and berries. Medium body, acidity & tannins, reasonably long finish. My palate favors young wines but I can see this aging beautifully.

  • This is a real treat even now in its youth; give it some time in the decanter to let it unfurl but there is an assured quality about this wine that always stays on the right side of elegant. Not showy, not big and ripe but rather serene with cool black fruit, raspberry notes, some coconut elements peek out and fine tannins. Excellent.

  • It had a prosaic new-world vibe on the first night, probably because it was tight and needed more airtime than I gave it. It really showed its stuff on night two. On the whole, it's an appealing -- and measured -- mix of new tires and almonds and tin and blackberry and soil, along with the most modest element of barnyard. Seemingly low acid and balanced tannin make it really approachable. It's a complex wine. For me, it has already hit the drinking window. But, as noted, it does require several hours of unwinding.

  • Spicy and local - much better efter just an hour opened. Overperforming the vintage, I think, with a broader body and wee bit softer. Still, this is manly stuff, comme l'habitude, has substance and presens - and as often with the modern Beaucastel, surpringly approachable. 93+

  • Decanted for an hour. Supple, and loaded with flavor, this shows so much dark berries, sous bois, mineral, currant paste and lilies. Seductively long, with fine, grainy tannins. The body is full, and this shows a percolating persona. Layered and finishes long. Drink 2023 -.

  • Another fruit bomb, for me this is just an amazing wine. The fruit is very much out front on this wine. Other very nice qualities do shine through though. Aromas of black current, blackberry and licorice root. We drank this over several hours and the wine just kept getting better with new qualities coming out. A very long and nice finish that lingers.

  • This wine continues to be a favorite. I have found myself gravitating more and more towards Rhone, in particular CdP. These guys make some of the best for my money. This year is very fruit forward for me both on the nose and the palette. Earthy notes come in behind the fruit and are very pleasant. The spice on the palette is nicely mixed in with some herbal notes. It is still a bit tannic [how I like my wine] but it is really quite well balanced still for such a young powerful wine. Excellent all around for me.

  • This felt quite closed to me until maybe 2 hours in. This is in a weird young phase right now. I found the last few vintages to be drinking better at this stage - maybe it is due to the dry conditions of 2017? Also felt a little more alcohol than in previous vintages. Im confident this will drink well in the future, Beaucastel never really misses the mark. Excited to try again in a few years

  • Tasted immediately after opening

Very young (obviously) - red fruit with a little something else on the nose. Hint of truffle?

The finish is clean and quick - it doesnt really linger round. No substantial structure at this point in time.

Fine, but not much more than that. Was expecting a little more considering the blend that goes into it.

Will update with more notes if any substantial changes over time.

60min in there's a little more body showing through though its getting a little more harsh. Nose is really pulling itself together, have upscored a point to reflect this.

  • Decanted for about an hour. A very youthful wine. Distinct iodine, black raspberry, bacon, balsamic, and rosemary. A wine that always presents lighter in body than I expect, but not light bodied in any respect. This is always a satisfying wine with precision and classic aspects. 14.5% alc., but without any hint of heat. With beef filet tenderloins and tremendously creamy steak fries at Fat Canary as the “celebration” of my dotage continues in this pandemic time. (Not a wine from inventory but from wine list.) Recommended leaning toward Highly Recommended.

  • I was impatient and wanted to try a bottle before cellaring the rest. I gave this a 3 hour decant. Garrigue, raspberry, cherry cough drop, and a spicy finish. Well balanced and no hard edges. A bit closed right now but I think this will come together nicely in another 5 years.

  • Decanted a good 8hrs. Much love on the aromatics here, lots of cigar wrapper and floral scents, dark fruits too. I was a little thrown off guard as to how structured this youngster was. Yes, high percentage of Mourvèdre in the blend blah blah blah, but still, this was a beast! Still, enjoyed by all and should be great in decade plus.

  • Great early look at this wine. Deep blueberry, blackberry and black raspberry fruit. Cigar box, spices and woodsmoke. Midpalate feel is exceptional now, but there are layers to unwind for years to come. Finishing acidity is quite tart, but will resolve.

Not on the level of a top vintage, but an excellent wine nonetheless.

  • Wine in the time of Corona Virus - Quarantining in NYC & NH; 3/7/2020-9/1/2020 (NYC/NH): Bottle 3 for the birthday celebration, and another find from the NH Wine & Liquor Outlet. Ordinarily I would not open this young a CdP, but it too was drinking well and approachable. Juicy red fruited and aromatic Grenache, with cherries and herbs. Clearly will improve with time, but was pretty darn tasty now.

  • Poured through an aerator into a decanter.
Even then, the wine continued to evolve over next five hours.

Started off with lots of dark fruit, spicy notes, with very smooth tannins.
Finish was abit shorter than what I liked.

It is young and has many years ahead.

  • Well...well.....well.....definitely a great wine from Chateau de Beaucastel. Nice aromatics of deep dark fruits, cuban cigar box, and hints of leather and cedar. This prepares you well for the exquisite mixture of dark blue, black, and red fruits with smooth mineral flavors that are integrated well with the acids and tannins. The finish is smooth, clean, and lingering. This will be an even better treat with more age.

  • Very deep garnet/purple in the glass, with strong aroma of dark cherry. There were also smokiness and woodsy notes in the aroma but the fruit was definitely in the dominant feature for me. I found a slight herbal touch with some leather/tobacco as well. The mouthfeel was wonderful with an initially smooth/balanced feel and then the tannins reach up and grab you, but not in a bad way. They present in a manner which I really enjoy. I thought with the intense fruit in the aroma perhaps it might be a bit jammy but it's not. The cherries and other fruit in here were very nice. This finish was very dry, which I like but some might not so much. While this is clearly a young wine and has a lot of good years ahead of it I found nothing at all wrong with enjoying this now while it is young.

  • Agree with prior review about the black and blue fruit, wood smoke, and cedar, along with baked pie notes. The fruit is plush and "crunchy" while at the same time the wine structure is very svelte and smooth, which bodes well for its future

This was our first Beaucastel, and while we were excited to try it from all the high ratings, we definitely jumped the gun in opening this. Its nowhere near reaching its potential. There are much better, ready to drink Rhone reds for half the price right now.

Note that only 3% of this wine has been drank from users' cellars. I'll pay closer attention to this for younger wines in the future, even when they have lofty ratings.

  • Candied black and blue fruit, violet, smoke, and cedar. Fleshy, intense fruit, grippy but not harsh tannins. An impressive young Beaucastel. After the last few vintages showed a lighter, more vibrant style, the warmer 2017 is built on dense fruit and oaked to match. Best starting 2024.

  • Baby killing, but who cares.

First impression is the nose... simply astonishing. Powerful, ripe, brambly berries with a hint of bretty funk. Complex and penetrating. The nose is worth the price of admission by itself.

On the palate, the same ripe dark cherry and blackberry notes, laced with licorice, black tea, herbs and a bit of bretty undergrowth. Body is medium at most. Tannins feel soft at first but quickly mount and become rather intense. The fruit flavors more than stand up to the tannins. This is a wine that will go the distance. A wine of significant finesse and power that will get even better in the future.

  • An incredible wine with a great nose - so complex; very dark color to the wine - so pure. The taste is wonderfully fresh and full bodied. It's not too tannic or overly alcoholic. The flavor is complex. I didn't take the best notes so can't give a more detailed description than that, but I will seek out more of this.

  • PnP. Very ripe red plum colour. Highly exotic nose bursting with earthy and spiced red fruits, suede, licorice and cigar leaf tobacco on the nose. Medium bodied. Red and black fruits on the palate that have an impression of sweetness. Good length. Quite dry. However, the tannins feel a little under ripe. The flavours are a little light at the start and fill out a bit towards the finish, but this bottle makes it feel like an off vintage that is not quite up to snuff. Good for a CdP but mediocre for a Beaucastel. Markedly different from the last bottle!

  • Deep crimson to purple. Strikingly fresh, uniquely gritty and chewy. Ripe forest berries, acerola, raspberry, blackberry, and açaí smoothy, purple root vegetables, crushed thick flower petals, and cut, precious stone-like precision. Mourvèdre shows prominently. Riveting concentration and tanginess! Medium plus acid and generous velvety tannin. Will it last for twenty or more years? Who knows!? And, who cares!? It is crazy delicious now and should hold form for a least a decade. Worth seeking out! 95-96.

  • Deep purple-looked like Syrah! Amazing depth and concentration of black and blue fruit without any overripeness. More savory elements are currently in the background, washed over by the creamy fruit. Round, penetrating, clinging tannins will demand years to resolve, although they are not terribly austere right now. Quite a great result for the regular cuvée. I was deeply impressed by this wine, which may be one of the best, purest young Beaucastels I've ever tasted.

  • Pop and pour of the new release. Beautiful deep magenta with bright highlights. Seems medium full bodied and not at all over extracted. The nose is initially all dark purple hedgerow fruit, garrigue, especially fresh bay leaf, camphor and deep down, with lots of air, comes a richer almost warm fur bass note. First sip is Oh Wow! First flavour impression is crunchy, pure purple berries and then it takes a deep dive down into a darker, richer, more complex zone that spreads out across your whole mouth leaving puckery tannins and a long, lingering, juicy finish. There are a lot of tannins in there but they seem to be pretty buried under the fruit for now. Once it opens up a bit the aromatic elements blend more seamlessly and becomes more like a typical Beaucastel. The flavours meld together more as well into a lush pastiche of smooth and rich Provencal flavours. This is right up there with the best and clearly built to last for a long time. 96 point right now with lots of upside once it settles down in a few years.

  • This turned out to be quite a damper. The wine was diffused and diluted. It was almost like someone poured water into a solid bottle of vino.

  • Dark berry nose with olive and sweet spice notes. Full, tight and compact palate; chewy, firm finish. Needs a decade or two.

  • A blend of 30% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, and the balance other varietals, the nose needs some coaxing to reveal black spice, dark berry, plum, garrigue, flinty mineral, and pepper spice aromas, with much of the same on the palate. It is full-bodied, dense, thick, and richly concentrated with firm, grippy tannins and a long, mouth-watering finish. A big wine that needs 3-4 years of cellar time and should drink well over next 20+ years.

  • Spicy, meaty, earthy, rich and lushly textured, the wine has depth of flavor, complexity and lift. The wine balanced, concentrated and the fruit shows ripeness with lift that works. The spicy essence to the red fruits is on the nose and in the deep, dark, spicy red fruits on the palate and finish. The wine is a blend of 40% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache and 20% Syrah, with the remainder of the blend coming from all the other red and white wine grape varieties.

  • Sexy nose - lots going on, complex berried and spicy notes; full, rich, explosive. Glorious texture. Long.

  • Tasted after 2017 Coudoulet de Beaucastel. More depth on the nose - generous fruit, cherries, dark berries, spices, wood smoke, floral notes, liquorice. On the palate powerful, generous, vibrant, good acidity. The tannins are finer and better integrated in comparison. Quite tight towards the finish. Very promising. 92-93+
