Starting to dry out a touch with the fruit giving way to some alcohol and edginess. Still has that great Carlisle complexity and balance. I think I should start cracking some of the older Carlisles I have squirreled away.

Nose of plum, blackberry and black cherry, same on the palate, medium/big body, slightly tired and old, bought at auction to remind me of the good old days as Carlisle no longer buys grapes from the Tom Feeney Vineyard, very tasty with lasagna, has a long finish.

Crimson in color. 15.9% ABV. Blueberry, loganberry, pepper and licorice on the nose. Rich, ripe and jammy. Full bodied and perfectly balanced. Blackberry, boysenberry, cocoa and white pepper on the palate. Soft tannins. A perfectly aged Zinfandel that is ready to drink now.

The cost me what? $24? This is an outstanding wine. Once again, I am reminded that if we are patient with well-made California wine, it can be truly outstanding. The red fruit is bright and clear. No rough edges, spice in the background. The fruit is sharper and seems sweet with no actual sugar. This does not have any of the components of older zins that many people liken to aged claret, but this is, after all, only barely 8 years old. I did not notice high alcohol while drinking and it was not hot on the palate, but after drinking about a third of the bottle, I began to feel the effects of the alcohol.

My last of this beautiful Zin and the timing is about right. Drank this with friends yesterday while watching a playoff game. Pop and pour. Color clear garnet. The wine was still full bodied and complex with an earthy quality. I have loved earlier bottles of this wine more than this one but IMHO the wine is past its peak and the fruit is starting to fade. I would say drink'em up this year if you have them.

My last bottle, and patience was rewarded. The wine was very nicely balanced, and the fruit was nicely meshed with the brambly notes of zin. This was the best bottle of zin I have had, and I have been on Carlilsle's mailing list since the 2004 vintage.

Fond adieu to an old friend. Last bottle of this one and went out with a bang. Firm structure, depth and red fruit flavor and some glycerine that keep the mouthfeel and finish interesting. We drank this at Meritage in St. Paul with some good lamb shank and duck dishes. Very good stuff. Hoping the '07 and forward Montafi's I've been patiently waiting on hit these high notes.

I took this to a party, and I have mixed emotions. It impressed the hell out of everybody, but I could have had it all to myself if I'd opened it at home. Textbook classic zin. Ripe (but not too ripe), hot (but not too hot), this baby really delivered. Lotsa berries and a little bramble, nice, rich texture, and a long, mouthfilling finish.

Popped and poured out of the bottle, nose already singing--lots of brambles plus a little etoh. Palate is rich and smooth with flavors of ripe black currant, black tea bag, a little orange oil. Finish is very intriguing with lots of dark fruit, tar and sandalwood. Whole package is much better than individual parts. Very satisfying.

Decanted for 1.5 hours. Deep, dark ruby to purple color. Brambly blackberries, blueberries, spice, pepper, licorice, earthy elements, and a bit of a floral note on the nose. Full body with solid, ripe tannins and good acidity. Massive on the palate with a bit of eucalyptus creeping in with the sweet, peppery, berries. Long finish with the pepper and berries lingering forever. Tastes great now, but no hurry to drink.

Dinner and Wine (My House): This bottle came towards the end of the meal, tasted side by side with the 2006 Carlisle Bacchi zin. The Feeney was far better, showing real nice blue fruit and a cool sweet core. I wish I could have tried it again today as I didn't give it enough time to settle in.

The color was deep ruby. The nose filled with a briar patch of fruits and flowers. There was a good mineral component and well measured oak presence as well. The wine improved over the course of three days as an open bottle in the fridge. As the days went on, the wine became more balanced, long, and complex ending in a beautifully balance beverage of dark berries, sweet spices, subtle minerals, and background oak. This was lovely.

Aromas of doughy/briary blackberry, crushed rock and licorice. Brighter, fresh crushed berry on the effusive, zesty palate. That bright, fresh berry continues onto the finish along with a pronounced licorice note. Fresh, balanced zin but not quite the usual Carlisle depth and exotic elements.

Day 1 Upon pop and pour the wine shows very tight with a tartness in the mouth. In a half hour it opened up without decanting. On the nose, dark red rasberries dusted in chocolate, a touch of smoke and earth. In the mouth (after the inital tightness), silky smooth with a touch of spice. The wine shows a wonderful richness in the mouth. Really delicious zin!
Day2 Much of the same. The wine smoothed out some and held up perfectly from day.

Mike Officer's Feeney is always one of my favorite Zins, and this will no doubt also be one of my favorites, but as usual seems to be needing time to settle down and integrate. Currently a little hot. As others have said, this was best on days two and three. I plan to wait until at least fall '08 for the next try. (Addendum--I found this bottle over a week after we opened it, with a cork and about 1-2 ounces in the bottom of the bottle. As I suspected--even better, with no evidence of oxidation, and more integration of flavors, with the berries becoming a kind of dark velvet nectar--sit on this one if you can, or be prepared for a LONG decant time!)

I was very disappointed first night, but encouraged on day 2. Initial impression was that the wine was too sweet, hot and oaky (?? - no one else mentions this). It tasted manipulated. On day 2 it was much better integrated - still big and fruit forward (and is that bad in a zin?), but more more balanced.

Unmistakable for what it is. I have to admit I am coming to realize that I am just not a huge Tom Feeney fan. I just really do not like the bubble-gum/ candied sweetness notes. My score here represents the average of my experience two days apart. Immediately upon opening, this was hot and disjointed, and generally not so pleasant. I had a glass or two, then recorked and stuck it in the fridge. Coming back two days later was largely helpful. The palate had come together, rounding out and putting on some weight and a bit of complexity. This would have made for a nice wine, however, the nose had now taken on a locker room kind of note that detracted from the overall experience.

Not a big fan of Zin anymore, but this wine reminds me why I loved it once. Dark purple color. Nose of ripe fruit, bramble, and cranberries. Wine is nice and fruit forward from attack to finish (which is long for a Zin). Medium bodied and easy to drink. Drinking extremely well now.

I've not been a huge fan of Zin in the past but this was really lovely. Big plummy rounded flavours with a rich and lasting palate. Bex found hints of chocolate on teh finish. Surprisingly refined and carries its 15.99% (!!!) alcohol really well.

This was very nice. The nose showed raspberry and cherry, with a hint of minerality. In the mouth it was medium to full-bodied with balanced acidity and flavors. The finish is medium to long. Overall, this doesn't possess the same power and complexity of prior Feeney's, but it is a wine that will likely have broader appeal, especially for those who think Zin can be too big, sappy, fruity, etc.

Fresh off the UPS truck....I couldn't resist popping one of these for lunch. Big fruity nose with lots of plum, cherry, spice and of course some alcohol. A pleasant bottle of juice with loads of ripe fruit with no hints of raisin or prune like flavors that can often be found in zins this ripe. Certainly not my favorite varietal or style of wine but a great match for pizza and simple pasta dishes.
