Dinner at Coulisse (Amsterdam, NL): [Restaurant purchase] A great bottle, but a tad too ripe to be amazing, shows the warm vintage (not necessarily in the alcohol but in the fruit). Medium+ intensity on the nose with roses, tar, licorice, sour cherry, hint of brett? Medium+ acidity, high tannins, long finish

30 minutes for a breather and no turning back; really expressive and heady. You barely pick up any of that 2015 heat. The nose was deep roses, spice, blood orange, dark cherry liqueur, exuding elegance and softness without losing any of that energy. Graceful on the palate and the deftest touch of grip.

The most remarkable aspect of this wine is its weightlessness, paired with an exceptional balance and elegance. It’s hard to imagine a Barolo finer than this. However, it may not be the ideal time to uncork this, as the fruit flavors are currently subdued, likely requiring a few more years in the cellar to fully re-emerge. Despite this, the wine presented a beautiful complexity, with a core rich in minerality, complemented by layers of violets, red berries, smoke, and herbal undertones.
Decanting: I would give it at least 3-4 hours in the decanter. It improved with every minute of air.

This bottle of '15 Bartolo showed considerably better than I recall the wine on release. The wine was expressive and quite light bodied and elegant for a Nebbiolo, so it's no crime to open a bottle today. I don't see this being super long-lived, but there should be another decade of positive development ahead if you prefer a bit of secondary development, which has yet to occur.
The nose was beautifully perfumed with sweet red berry fruit, blood orange, red roses, and sweet spices. For lack of a better term, it was immediately on the nose a bit of a Burgundian, lighter Barolo, with beautiful purity of fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium to light in body, quite ethereal with red roses, blood orange fruit, and hard candy like red berry fruit, with attractive inner sweetness. The acidity level is medium to high, which gives this wine a freshness / vibrancy I've found many '15s to lack. The tannins are quite refined already, although with air and as the wine warmed up they became a bit more noticeable.
I might be biased, as I always love the house style here. This was definitely young, but pretty accessible. Perfumed, red fruited, with notes of flowers, some sweet red berries, mint, also some tar, graphite, a touch of truffle. Medium-full bodied, super elegant, with good persistence, with high acidity and medium-high tannin that is vry good quality. Excellent length. Great Bartolo, with a lot of immediate charme. Probably not on the level of the very best vintages (like 2008, 2010, 2013, 2016, etc.) but still a very beautiful, Burgundian Barolo.

Rich, textural expression of vibrant red fruits. You see the usual suspects of menthol and rose petal water add lift and elegance to the wine. Clove, tangerine peel and cherry skin add the bitterness that contrast the juicy sweetness of the core of the palate.
This wine still needs time, but with plenty of swirling and air, you can tell that this is going places. I will try and find an opportunity to drink this again in a decade.

Beautifully balanced, seamless, understated Barolo. Nose and palate sing the same seamless song. An example of why we drink wine. Nebbiolo and Barolo through and through. The balance can seduce you into seeing a simplicity that belies this beautiful example of Barolo. Drinking well, it will do so for perhaps 20-30 years. Thank you to the PWS partners for sharing it.

Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): One of the best producers in Piedmont. We did a side by side with this and the Rinaldi Tre Tine which is also an excellent wine and found most of ourselves preferring this one. It’s just a bit more gentle and soft in style. Lovely red fruits. Very clean and crisp and elegant. Drinks quite nicely. From our wedding year so would love to have more in the cellar.
Of course this will be great someday but today was not the day. One of the honest, pure expressions of Nebbiolo that's out there. I can see why those who love the modern style of barolo are not huge fans. There's very little going on right now other than a wall of tannin and soft rose and maraschino cherry notes. This was consumed after a good decant and had been open for 5 hours and finished over the next 4 hours. After nine hours, the signature mascarello spice popped up.
Wait 10 years before opening if you really want to understand the awe that bartolo Mascarello wines bring.

Return to Piemonte!; 11/25/2021-12/4/2021 (Castello di Sinio, Alba, other various locations): In a super combination lunch, but this is a wine that I feel comfortable putting up with some of the best in the area. As I said before, it’s a blend and in a world where everyone wants to be burgundy and celebrates the single vineyard MT will tell you that she can make a better wine day in and day out if she gets to play with multiple properties. We ddin’t visit this year (COVID perhaps?), but I believe her. Different style, but great and I say that in the most expressive way because she is one of my favorites.
Decanted at restaurant, enjoyed over 2-3 hours. Somewhat giving on the nose at this young age. Cherries, orange peel, hints of rose - notably Nebbiolo. Feel the ripeness of the year, not overbearing given the wine's structure. Young but actually pretty enjoyable today.

I am trying my second bottle. I am too impatient to wait. Opened for 3 hours. Color is very pale brick red and very easy to see through. On the nose: Cherry, strawberry and rose. On the palate: Kirsch, rose, hint of lavender baking spices and a bit of tar. Mouthfeel is lovely and elegant. This is very good and very classic. Still young but I am enjoying this heading into the long weekend.

The 2015 Bartolo is a vintage I've never been thrilled with in several tastings, and that streak continued with this bottle. It's a wine that I've found lacks a ton of early pleasure / appeal, yet I'm also not sure will age particularly well. That said, clearly others like this wine a lot more than I do.
On the nose, I dark red fruit, orange peel, savory spices, licorice, red floral aromas, and a touch of balsamic. On the palate, the wine was richly textured but lacked the acidity/freshness and inner sweetness I find in the better vintages of Bartolo. I found dark red fruit, savory spices, and licorice tones on the palate, and a hint of balsamic spice. The tannins are finely textured, but more present / noticeable at this early stage than in the classic vintages.

Quite expressive and a bit intense aromas with darker berries, some leather, powerful roses, wet salt and clear spice varieties that seduce. Full bodied wine with powerful and very good mouthfeel. Juicy cherries, rose bush, hints of graphite and dark heavy saltiness. Somewhat tight. Fine tannin structure. Need some time to find the balance, but this is a great wine. 94 points.

Brilliant effort. Really should let age at least 5 years more, but you can already taste how good it is. Tart red cherry liquor and other red fruits and lovely floral notes typical of Barolo. Big tannins. Extremely smooth and elegant. I will let my other 2 bottles age before trying again. I expect it will climb in score.

Thanksgiving week in Piemonte; 11/22/2019-11/30/2019 (Milan, Barolo, Alba, Barbaresco): Tasted at the winery. Maria Teresa talked about the '15 vintage starting cold and rainy through end of June, then quite hope in July - turning cool again in August just prior to harvest. The color here was a paler translucent ruby. Red fruit and fresh earth on the nose. On the palate this was very elegant for a young, warm vintage wine. Red fruited with earth and minerals and a nice mouthfeel. Needs to age but very pretty!

Piedmont II - better and learnings; 11/23/2019-11/29/2019 (Barolo, Alba, others): Most of the places we visited this trip were all about the MGA (single cru vineyards) so it was refreshing to see the other side of the coin as well. There is just the one barolo. Over the course of our trip we had a number of them from different years and I liked every one including the 15 (which is I think really on the young side to be drinking). Beautiful elegance to the wine. Lots of red fruits and minerals and maybe a hint of flower petals. Get some almost iron ore flavor here which I tend to like in my wine. Even as it sat in the glass it was continuing to open up and get better. Very pretty style of wine and very much enjoyed (if I owned though this is sitting down for at least 15 years).

Ruby violet with some transparency. Nose deep cherries, slightly candied. Palate slightly tight, some chalky tannins, bright cranberry acidity. Mineral red cherry with time, but still seems a bit closed/too young. Needs a few more years before really showing itself, imo. 90 pts with upside obviously.
White Truffles & Nebbiolo (Chez Nanda): Late night pop n' pour to take this out for a test drive. Worth the hype. Stuffed with pure, poised red cherry fruit. Has loads licorice and floras. Open knit and welcoming for now. Better in 20+ years.

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume IV (Chicago, IL): Pretty much the 2013 redux. It's just so pure: crystalline cherries and strawberries on the nose and palate, and a massive heap of potential. Juicy and exuberant, but at the same time a little more reticent on the palate, so you know it's not giving everything up right away. I missed tasting this when I was in Piedmont earlier this year, but this is a strong contender for wine of the vintage.

Tasted at the cantina. Like the other 2015s I tasted so far, it’s already more or less open for business. A classic bouquet of red cherries, violets and rose pedals with a touch of oriental spice. Quite ethereal and feminine with a medium to full body. With a longer experience with Maria Theresas wines, I know that less obvious wines will age more gracefully and provide a longer window to enjoy. Another successful vintage for this great estate.

Tasted at the Cantina with Alan (MT was in the fields working with the harvest teams). Consistent with other '15s I tasted in Barololand, this is accessible with sweet red fruits upfront. Polished and lengthy on the finish. Should be one of the top wines of the vintage.

Warm feeling Barolo with more balsam than I usually get in Bartolo Mascarello. Broad and ripe but still holding it together very well on the palate with more tar, deep nebbiolo fruit, red licorice, and some medicine cabinet. Nice spice and perfume, but if I were to pick nits, it comes off a little warm for me to be truly fantastic.

Cantina Bartolo Mascarello will always occupy a special place in my emotional makeup. They're wonderful wines, and they're the Barolo that I've been buying the most of for the longest time, and that I probably have the most familiarity with. So it was a special treat to get to visit with them and try this bottle well in advance of release. Alan compared it to the '11, but with some irrational ego and the corresponding risk I'll disagree. I see more '13. It has that same intoxicating red fruit character, lifted by a heady but seamless presence. It may not be quite as large-scaled overall, but there's a great deal of beauty and femininity that fills whatever, if any, gap that the sum total might present. There's a characteristic power underlying everything; this is beautiful, no doubt, but it's "my way" classic Barolo from Cantina B. Mascarello. There's power, structure, and everything else that those who love this estate and its trajectory will be big fans of. Just wonderful.

With Maria Teresa and Alan
