  • Reading Offline #1 - Alino's Thames Lido Dinner - Mixed Whites and Reds (The Thames Lido, Reading): Served blind. Nose a little funky on pouring, some stink / brettiness veering into the fecal / mousy. Some air mercifully nudges this in the right direction. There is some strawberry fruit and some hints of fudgey sweetness. Palate is correct and cool fruited. The grenache character really comes to the fore with air. I guessed Spain because it reminded me of the Envinate but not Commando G although think I have tried a few of their wines in the dim and distant past.

  • Seemed quite spikey and needed an hour or two to smooth out.
Not as enjoyable as I remember but did improve with air

  • Pretty cranberry color, light, translucent. Strong burnt match bouquet, even though there's supposedly little SO2 used (only at bottling) – some of it blew off by the next morning, but not enough. Herb-tinged cranberry soda smell. Flat, dusty in the palate, with harsh bitter finish. Either bottle variation or I just don't get it.

  • Deep pink. Could pass for a dark rosé. Herbaceous and grassy on the nose. At first, hints of strawberry but that disappeared quickly. Pretty austere, fruitless, grippy and thin. Aftertaste of bitter herbs. Not a hint of fruit. I’m sure it’s well made and, as the label says, a “wine of place.” Made in the mountains outside Madrid in granite soil. I’m sure it reflects the cool challenging environment for wine with this grape in that region, but I’m not buying the hype. Commando G gets a lot of run, but there’s very little to recommend here. I can’t imagine time will serve it well, but maybe some of the harshness would relent. Hard to tell what would take over in its absence. I continue to think these guys are darlings of the wine press. I like the gredos garnachas of Alfredo Maestro much better.

  • Similar impression to DCWino's note, albeit I will not claim quite that level of detail. The wine gained weight and breadth on the second night, which offset some of the sharpness of the first night and made it a more complete wine. I will admit to having opened this earlier than I probably would have preferred, but I was curious to try, having heard good things about it. I think this will yield more with time, but that's just a guess. This did not remind me of a chateauneuf, since it lacked the glycerol mouthfeel and sweetness of fruit I find in most chateauneuf, but that's fine; this was its own thing and enjoyable for what it was.

  • Drank from a magnum over the course of two nights. Good but not spectacular (I suppose that’s fair for the price). Tart red fruit, clove, vanilla and mineral. Low alcohol but had some heat to it over both nights. Drinkable but acidic so better in a few years.

  • Wine gathering at RJ's; 4/4/2023-4/7/2023 (South Carolina): Pale red. Expressive nose displaying delicious pure bright red fruit, pomegranate, strawberry jam, animal, mint, pepper, tobacco, spicy spices and strong iron mineral. Very good concentration, finely layered pure red fruit, cool and precise, medium acidity, strong iron mineral and a long bright red fruit driven finish with a hint of animal and strong black pepper at the end. This cool interesting Grenache brings back a fond memory of trying a few excellent cool Grenaches at Cinc sentits during our family trip to Barcelona.

  • No formal note taken. This was similar to other bottles, the same etherial, almost burgundian, profile with its typical pale colour. As ever the alcohol didn't protrude and the Grenache from Commando G was nothing like the typical Chateauneuf offering (Rayas aside). T
I thought this bottle lacked the bright crunchy red fruit of previous bottles but this was the oldest I have tried so it may be age or vintage. I just don't drink enough of this to know. Still a lovely wine though.

  • Incredibly light red color. Bouquet of ripe strawberries, jam, crushed stone. Fresh and sweet palate, ripe berries, mint, yeast, long yet thin finish. This improved over three nights, feels slightly thin and volatile, but overall interesting and elegant wine.

  • Pale garnet in color (or is it ruby, I am not really good at deciphering the very minuscule shades of colours) the wine has a nose of knockout intensity, delivering waves of perfect cool climate Grenache fruit. In fact it is typical Garnacha from the continental Spain, nowhere near the somber dark fruited concentration of its Priorat counterparts. Yes, the nose is expressive yet it’s simple: candied raspberry and strawberry fruit and hints of stems and rhubarb.
Same is true on the palate, with one exception, the wine fades away rather quickly and doesn’t deliver any special length nor an extra layer of complexity.
The wine is the true Pinot Noir of the South, and I mean Fruhburgunder and not Chambertin or Musigny.

  • Wines of the Camino de Santiago; 9/13/2022-10/19/2022 (Northern Spain): This was bought at the restaurant. It pours a pale ruby color. The nose is fresh and lively right away with bright red Cherries, strawberries, fresh picked berries, rose petals, crushed rocks, red currants, some stems, herbs, licorice, and red flowers. The Medium bodied feel is balanced with tart, medium+ acidity and youthful, medium+ tannins. The red fruits are crunchy but the mid-palate lacks a bit right now. Hopefully with a little bit of age it will flesh out and I can see this getting even better if that happens.

  • Pale cranberry in color, with a dusty nose showing tart red plums with just a hint of acacia flowers. Palate has a distinctive bitterness, tart, very saline character. Decanting helped, somewhat softens the bitterness, but not to a degree that it isn't highly evident.

Either this is shut down, or there must be quite a bit of bottle variation: Doesn’t really resemble the Vinous TN.

  • Just like my previous note but with slightly less fresh fruit. Tannins more apparent so IMO the wine will not be getting any better. Still deliciousBut not as delicious as six months ago. I will start treating these wines like I would cru Beaujolais. Drink up within 3-5 years in their glorious youth

  • Shiny lighter ruby color. Pretty explosive, with notes of pure red berries, strawberries, some red cherries, but also some herbal notes, flowers, some spices, orange zest and then there is a bunch of chalky/granite minerality adding grip. It‘s medium-bodied, with medium+ acidity and just a touch of tannin. Very good persistence too. Pretty long finish with plenty of complexity. A very pretty wine and a testament of the potential of higher altitude Garnacha in Sierra de Gredos. (93+)

  • Very light in color- like Trousseau from the Jura based on appearance. Never in a million years would have pegged this for Grenache/Garnacha. Light strawberry and fresh red cherry fruit aromas along with herbal and slightly spicy notes. JVIZ gives a good call on the bay leaf.

Light in the mouth with very little tannins and nice lively acidity. Unfortunately, the flavors are dominated by brett. It's by no means undrinkable, and it's still decent enough with a slight chill as an accompaniment to dinner, but the brett just crowds out the nicer subtle flavors that are lurking somewhere underneath. A real shame actually, because I think there is a beautiful wine under there. But as is, I wouldn't buy this again. Do yourself a favor, get a better wine and save money by sticking to La Rozas.

  • Went for another bottle and this one was quite a bit better! Completely transparent in the glass, full aromas of wild strawberry, bay leaf, and stony minerals. Less Brett in this bottle I think. It stood out in a tasting lineup and showed well.

  • Bottle 2 of a 4 pack. My favorite new discovery of the last 2 years (envinate is a close second). No reduction at all. Tastes like chat du pape and cru Beaujolais had a baby. Incredible freshness. Color is nouveau Beaujolais. But the mouth is full and concentrated. Slight garrigue, and olive with fresh crushed strawberries and darker cranberry. Fascinating wine. The wine wont age well but has improved over the last year. The wine is rounder and more complete. I think The lower tier la bruja is a better wine. At least this vintage.
Day 2 - getting oxidized. this wine wont last long. Drink up

  • Fully agree with forceberry’s note. This wine is transparent in color, relatively light in body, fresh, with bright acidity and low alcohol, fruity with wild strawberry and cranberry notes, some stony minerals, but as a total package, marred by brett and even a bit of mousey natural funk. I dare say I liked La Bruja better, and the Landi lineup destroys the Comando one, now having tasted a few of each, IMO.

  • Same bottle as previous note. No real notes but I remember that initially when first tapped with a Coravin it came across as rather acidic and awkward.
However, this one has got better with time and it sort of grows on you. Sweet raspberry, wild strawberry fruit.
This has definitely improved over time.

  • Gave it a test drive since i have a few bottles of this in the cellar. Can certainly see its potential. Floral, mineral with structure. Maybe revisit in 3 years?

  • Lys frugt! I næsen masser hindbær, grøntsag, fløde. Smag med milde syrlige bær, topmoden frugt. Let yoghurt, og et bittert grenet knæk. Super let og elegant men med struktur og syngende syre.

  • A mountain Garnacha from multiple old (50-60 yo) biodynamically farmed vineyards planted at the altitude of 900 m above sea level in Valle del Tiétar, Sierra de Gredos. Fermented spontaneously in open-top fermentors, aged for 12 months in old 3000-4000-liter oak casks. 13,5% alcohol. Total production 15238 bottles and 150 magnums. Tasted blind.

Very pale and fully translucent raspberry red color with a slightly brick-orange hue and a colorless rim. Very funky and noticeably bretty yet also quite attractive nose with rather Loire-like aromas of leathery funk, some wild strawberries and crunchy cranberries, light zesty Campari notes, a little bit of perfumed floral character, a hint of sun-baked earth and a touch of Band-Aid. The wine is lithe, light-to-medium-bodied and very funky on the palate with quite rustic flavors of barnyard and bretty leather, wild strawberries, some juicy notes of dark plums, a little bit of stony minerality, light earthy notes, a hint of lifted floral character and a touch of smoky phenolic spice. The moderately high acidity and somewhat grippy medium tannins that slowly pile up on the gums lend good firmness and sense of structure to the wine, although the structure is really balanced with the light body. The finish is lively, moderately funky and somewhat grippy with lengthy flavors of bretty leather, some wild strawberries, light floral notes of violets, a little bit of barnyard and a hint of crunchy cranberry.

Based simply on the funky tones and overall lightness of the wine, my initial guess was a mountain Garnacha from Serra dos Gredos, perhaps Comando G. A correct guess with the first try! Overall I was rather surprised how very light and delicate the wine was; I'm not a big fan of Garnacha because of its tendency to produce low-acid, high-alcohol wines, so it is always wonderful when one encounters a wine that is anything but. However, I guessed this was one of the simpler entry-level wines of Comando G, based on its very light body, lithe overall fruit and lack of intensity - which is why I was surprised to learn that this was actually Rozas 1er Cru, a big step above Comando G's entry-level wines! The wine was definitely good (at least if you can handle a healthy dose of bretty funk), but at the same time rather underwhelming compared to the expectations. Unfortunately this wine didn't reach the quality, vibrancy and intensity many previously tasted Comando G Garnachas have shown.

  • They don't call this the Spanish Rayas for nothing. We compared this with another well rated spanish grenache, Las Uvas de la Ira El Real de San Vicente, and it was way above. Amazing aerial, very light colored wine. This is great stuff.

  • Strålende fra Comando G. Så lys og kul nese. Urtete, transparent og elegant. Kjølig og leskende stil. Så forsiktig ekstrasjon at den nesten drikker som en rosé. Mye drikkeglede. Denne var bedre enn forrige flaske.

  • PnP'ed, blinded. Light-ruby colored was what everybody noticed almost immediately, lending guesses to natural wine, and coupled with a nose that's also exhibiting lots of funk kind of cemented that guess... at least until this was tasted. That there was a vein of elegant & silky tannins, plus structure on the palate confounded the tasters. Guesses ranged from Beaujolais to Burg to Rhone, and to some New World wines. The funk persisted much longer than I would've liked... and in this respect, I preferred its '17-vintage sibling as it was beautiful from the get-go. That said, notes of roses, strawberries emerged after the funk subsided somewhat and the wine finished with just a very slight tinge of pith bitterness. An elegant Grenache, that doesn't come around very often.

  • Lys og «vill» nese. Fruktig og moderne stil. Lett i munn men med pen kons. Lys, bringebær- og ripsaktig frukt. Godt strukturert med fine tanniner som gir en stram og tørr finish.

  • Holy crap this is good. Nouveau Beaujolais color but top cru Beaujolais mouth. Concentrated. Forest floor, Conifer , chapparel. A carbonic freshness. Raspberry strawberry cranberry. I am fascinated with this wine. Mid $40s. On first thought not worth it. But on second thought this is way better than the majority of village burgundy ive had in the last 10 years and where the top cru Beaujolais bottles are priced now.
day 2: very slightly oxidized. Drink up in its glorious youth. It might change but IMO it will never give me more enjoyment than what it’s showing now.

  • 1120am: very light ruby color. The color reminds me of those 25 cent colored drinks back in the '80s. Smell of slight animal funk with underlying fruit. On the palate is red fruit with good balance of acid. Decanting the rest of the bottle until 4:30pm.
The wine is thin and now I am getting black pepper. This is a food wine. Drank with grilled beef and was tasty.

This wine reminds me of Rayas' Chateau des Tours Cotes du Rhone except this didnt have the overly strong spicy black pepper flavor. I liked this wine better.

  • A producer I've been meaning to try, so when I saw this for $42 locally, well under the best available online price, I thought I'd give it a spin. This starts off very interesting, shockingly light in color, with a very pure expression of grenache fruit and just a hint of brett. The fruit expression reminded me a bit of a lighter version of something by Rayas. The problem is that this was best upon opening and then stagnated a bit over the following hours. Perhaps time will help, but the extreme lightness of this wine doesn't suggest it is a wine made to age. There is not significant tannin or acid upon which a wine might traditionally age well, and nothing particularly primary which suggests a need for greater resolution. I enjoyed this, but at $42 I am not in a rush to repurchase.

  • 100 % Grenache from Sierra de Gredos around 80 km west of Madrid. Sand and granite soil, vines growing among wild vegetation. Hand harvested. Fermented in large, open tanks. 12 months on old, used oak.

👃🏻: Very herbal nose, red fruit candy (salted), animal aroma, lavender, licorice, camphor. Quite aromatic.

👅: Herbal and spicy, cherries, licorice, acidity a little above medium. Nice structure. Long finish.

  • Around 80 km west and south from Madrid the vines grow 900 m. above sea level. Light, dusty red, quite transparent. Intense and animale boquet w. garrigue, fruit candy. Pronounced alc., med+ body and below medium level of acid. Herbal and spicy profile w. cherries and liquorice. Good structure and long finish.

    Keep or drink.

  • Super tasty, open-knit Grenache. This is just pure joy, with red fruits, dried herbs, and an intense perfume that transports one right to the old world.

  • Coravin sample. I was curious of this producer and given the high praise I had to try.
Pink translucent color. Strawberry, cranberry, musk, turns sweeter with swirls. High almost sharp acidity, fine tannin. Light and uplifting. Very divisive as someone mentioned here. Finishes with a dose of heat.
Not sure of what I think of it yet. Will try and match with food, but with what?

  • Comando G does it again!!!! These guys coax flavor out of garnacha in ways I didn’t know existed. And if there was any question as to whether or not Sierra de Gredo is a full contender among Spanish wine, that has been answered.

This is deceptively light in the glass - bordering on comically pink. It’s disconcerting.

The nose was funky, stemmy... dare I say, NATTY? Still, crunchy red fruit was the obvious foundation.

On the palate, bracing acidity, more red fruit and whole cluster earthiness jump out at you. This wine is the skinny, awkward, not bright-looking girl with unkempt hair in my Western Civilization class at college. The one who i studied with once and realized she’s the smartest, funniest, sexiest, most well-travelled, interesting person in the class. The rest is history. I am in love with this wine.

Give it a minute to breathe and the fruit deepens a tad, some elegant tannins emerge, the balance is achieved and you realize that the “1er” nod to burgundy is wholly appropriate.

A bit better on the second night, but I loved experiencing the evolution. Can’t wait to see what some age does for it!

  • I can see this being somewhat of a divisive wine; served to 4 and it had a 50% rate of not impressed; I however quite enjoyed it; the color is super light, but the nose has intense notes of sauvage, strawberry, mineral, a saline/sea breeze note, red cherry, and violet. Intriguing and interesting. The palate is certainly on the lighter side, but again has good intensity of flavor without much of the heaviness of grenache; still not a lot of energy/acidity, but to be expected given the grape; I thought the balance was nice and found it to be quite pleasing. Will be interesting to follow as I really am not sure how this will age.

  • My first Rozas and it’s rather enjoyable. Very pale in colour with lighter hues of colour. Something of a Sonoma Pinot on the nose with blood orange elements.
Very light on palate, very much making me think of a summer red. Good acidity and flavours with plenty of fruit but this isn’t a deep rich red or even like a pinot in many respects. It’s up at the lighter end of that and quite bright.

  • My last bottle pure bliss and delicious Grenache from Sierra del Gredos.

  • A fascinating wine. I swear I can smell the acidity. Rhubarb, ripe cranberry maybe pomegranate. Delicate and feminine, has the body of cru Beaujolais but tastes a little more rustic and weedy ( in a good way) pushing $50. Not sure it’s worth $50 but fascinating nonetheless. A GREAT wine to take to a blind tasting.

day 2: evolving more toward cru beaujolais. Richer, fuller and more complex than day 1. Partial carbonic? Still a little weedy or almost conifer or forest floor. Pretty Rosé petal and cherries are coming out. It would be fun to taste this in 5 years. All in all, better day 2.

  • A beguiling wine of dual nature. To paraphrase (badly) Gramsci, ‘ optimism of the bouquet, pessimism of the palate’. An alluring nose, strawberries and perfume (Burgundy or Beaujolais), then amaro and herbs (Nebbiolo Langhe), enthralling. Who’d guess Garnacha/Grenache? And yet.
A lean palate, tart - whole bunches/stems perhaps, but the absence of mid-palate warmth suggests green under ripe tannin that I’m not sure time will resolve. It did look better on days two and three - more tannic Langhe than Beaujolais or Sthn Rhone - and yet the question remains: once the tannin mellows, what will be left? Only 13.6% alc. I can’t stand spirity high alcohol reds but Grenache seems to need more to acquire sufficient flavour ripeness.
A fascinating wine, one worth following. For mine, if it had the flavour and length of the 18 Rojas ‘Village’, with that nose it would be at least a premier cru garnacha.

  • This is an extremely light colored wine. Very deceptive because this is a very tannic wine even after 5 hours in the decanter. Very structured - almost Barolo level tannins. Clear, delineated fruit - mostly strawberry, but also something with pits - not sure what but you can taste pits. Great and delicious, but definitively let it rest in the cellar for a good while to achieve max greatness. Score will almost certainly improve.

  • Very light and delicate. Juicy and clean. Structurally like a red burgundy.

Nose: Anise, black pepper, pork crisp, some acetone. Hints of cat pee.

    Palate: Bilberries, crowberries, blackcurrant juice.

    Very enjoyable.

  • Light red, not much more saturated than many rosés. Strawberry, herb, and very aromatic floral tones. There is a sickly sweet note to the nose that I've noticed in some newer wave natural wines. Light and limpid with red fruit, pepper, and a bit of green. Interesting, delicate wine, but I can't say that I particularly liked it. Almost like a nouveau Grenache.

  • Just how Chateau Rayas can confuse people into believing it is from Burgundy, this wine is a very similar experience. While it is clearly Grenache when consumed unblinded, it would be interesting to test palates in a blinded format to see if anyone would call it something that it is not. While this is no Rayas, it does share some of the same qualities in a less refined way. I was surprised by this wine tonight.

  • What’s most striking is the combination of a glass like strawberry jolly rancher visual and strong nose/palate.
Strawberry rhubarb and pie crust on the nose.
Hint of tannins as a base for a whole host of herbs and spices.
Lovely w a non traditional Cubana and chips.

  • Pretty, light color. Very fragrant and red fruited. There is some structure here and I think it will age well over the medium term. Seems to be a step up from the 2018 Bruja de Rozas I had recently (as it's supposed to be).

  • Light, translucent color. Floral nose, red berries. Crunchy red fruit on the palate, notes of kirsch, raspberries, soil, light and fresh with a high level acidity. A hint of orange peel. Juicy and delicious, surprisingly open already. Beau vin.

  • People had been complaining my blinds had become stale/boring: fine, here we are then! This is a weird wine; there's some carbonic on the nose, some bright slightly natty red fruit, but the palate feels older - there's definitely some tea flavors. This is.......grenache? The nose is somewhat pleasant, the palate is not. No one particularly loved this wine, no one got close to calling it what it was, though at least one person somewhat mooted Rioja (which, while gets the country right, isn't actually all that close!).

  • Meget lys! Intens frugt. I næsen kkovjordbær, kirsebær tørret timian, våd skov, syrlige Tranebær. Mere moden smag med cremet rød frugt. Et krydret element. Medium+ syre og god længde. Minder mest om bourgogne, men måske lidt mere tannisk og mere krydderi.

  • So light in the glass, pronounced nose, loads of leather, dried herbs, bright red fruit. On the palate well balanced, complex, evoking in the mouth through the mid and finish. Would never have pegged this for Garnacha - definitely in the style of a good Burgundy. Not inexpensive, but lovely.
