  • Had this in succession with the same vintage of Langoa Barton. Good concentration, reticent aromas, deep purple color, long and lingering silky legs. Very forward, two days to consume the bottle. Tannins are noted on the long finish.

  • I was over the moon with the first sip. Not because this was an obvious classic LB, but because of the depth of the blue black fruit, seasoning, minerality, lifting into red fruits while the finish lingers. Starts out almost weightless before the fine tannins build weight and bring the wine back down to earth.

I suspect this could reach early peak between 2030 and 2035. Modern? Maybe. Do I care? Nope, it's delicious today.

Oh yeah, 6 hour decant and put back in the bottle for another 2 hours before serving.

  • UGC - A stunner! High acid, cedar, nice even now. Probably the WOTN.

  • Tasting of 20 different 2020 BDX incl 3 first growths and all Super Seconds. LB held its ground and terrific QPR. Worth buying

  • Langtons Bordeaux 2020 Arrival Tasting (Sydney, Australia): Lovely depth in taste and colour. Stood out in quality. Just a little volatile unintegrated at the edge. Felt like will get better and better and could be great in time. Probably deserved another point for potential. 93-94

  • Blackcurrant, plums , cedar, a sweet blackcurrant fruit core here almost strays to the jubey. Juicy, dense black fruits and tannins that are grippy, wood over grape, drying but persistent and near perfect, touches of cigar box on the long finish. Lovely

  • Beautiful nose. Cedar, vanilla, violets, plums and baked plums. Gorgeous. Wait 10 years min IMO. 96

  • inky purple color, lovely nose, ripe cassis, a bit of oak spice, crushed blackberries, on the palate perfectly ripe- just perfect, lively assertive tannins, the mid-palate is sheer joy with racy mineral and berry notes to accompany the pure and effortlessly beautiful cassis and cherry fruit, great length with a light chalk note, this shows the power and punch of the vintage without the potential excesses better than just about every other wine here tonight, superb.

[****+ - *****, 2030+ a long distance runner for sure, but this I think will be turning the corner in 10 years]

  • Another in a long string of mighty fine Leoville Bartons - but quite a personality contrast with the 2019, which was deep, weighty, and brawny. This one is bright and lively, not any poorer in material but juicier and higher-toned, with a flowing satiny texture, its fruit expression composed of both black and red fruits with the zing of currants and black raspberries. It's accented with a little bit of cedar and gravel but is otherwise mostly fruit-forward except for the occasional pop on the back end of something almost too primal and earthy to make sense in a wine of this age.

  • From a 375ml bottle. Not decanted. The wine was very tannic (even more than expected). I don't know if it was due to the small bottle (as the wine is more developed there) but compared to e.g. the young 2016 vintage, this one was less impressive. BUT I am confident that given enough time (10+ years) it will become a great wine. 92. pts. at the moment.

  • Union Grands Crus Bordeaux (UGC) 2020 Tasting (Hangar 14, Bordeaux): Not a seductive wine, quite serious with lots of tannins, but the dark fruit is there. This will need time but should be successful in the end. Score based on estimated destination.

  • Dark fruit and tobacco. Lacks red berry characteristic accustomed too. Deeply concentrated, ripe but robust tannins. Love it but it will take awhile. Revisit in 20.

  • Tasted at a 2020 vintage UGC tasting in Singapore. Still young and tight but good structure and nice cedar note to nose/palate.

Anticipated score when fully mature 93-95pts.

  • Bordeaux 2020 - 10 red & 1 sweet wine: Arrivage tasting by a merchant. Be aware, the sample size is quite small but here are a few observations: 1) Overall quality: This is another good vintage in Bordeaux but clearly not on the same level as 2016 or 2019. 2) Ripeness: What I tasted showed less ripe than 2015/18/19. Most wine show fresh dark and blue fruit, the two right banks showed well behaved too. None of the wines showed alcohol heat (a problem in many 18s and some 15s). Overall, I expected more ripeness but maybe the wineries I sampled all just got the picking date right. 3) Complexity: 2020 will not reach the heights of 2016 and for me is also a step or two behind 2015/18/19. 4) Precision: The precision was quite good, although not on the level of the 2016s. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe but have more edges than in 16/18/19 and will need time to soften, the acidity is high and well-integrated, the texture is not as airy as in 2016 but a step above 15/18 and maybe even 19. Overall, the wines showed quite harmonious but without the magical balance of the 2016s (and the best 15/18/19s I had).

TN: Brief impressions only. This was quite perplexing: while it showed great, it didn’t seem like a classic Leoville Barton. There was this strong black fruit core which showed more dominant and riper than you usually would expect for this wine. While it is in no way overripe, it’s probably still not something Barton lovers would expect and appreciate. Other than that, the wine showed impressive minerality. This will need time to soften as the tannins showed a tiny bit grippy but not something bottle age shouldn’t be able to solve. Good freshness as always. A good vintage for Barton and among the best wines today. 94+pts today, some upside in the future.

  • Deeply colored, this is a powerful wine with all the fresh, ripe, black and dark red fruits you could hope for, along with nuances of tobacco leaf, cedar, flowers, cigar box, espresso, smoke and creme de cassis to boot. This is the perfect blend of classy and classic, with ripe, elegant, tannins, length, purity, vibrancy and complexity that insures this is going to offer fabulous drinking for decades. Drink from 2027-2060.

  • UGCB tasting Bordeaux 2020 Walkaround tasting so in general just short notes (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam.): The wine is still locked but shows that is powerful and luxurious with ripe fruits, oak, cedar, graphite, smoke, beautiful acidity and round but sticky tannin. Probably wise to wait at least until 2035 or even longer. 95+

  • The 2020 vintage UGCB tasting in Amsterdam 03/06/2023 (Amsterdam): A bit closed bouquet at the moment (at least the bottle I've tasted); a convincing aftertaste met good bitters and tannins that need time to soften, but don't worry. Inbetween the bouquet and the aftertaste the midtaste connects in a classic style start and finish; overall it is, for me, not one of the top wines.

  • Very tight so will need time to develop and prospects unclear based on current aromatic profile. At UGC LA

  • At the UGC 2020 tasting in Chicago. Strong fragrance of fruit with a bit of oak, fruit and oak on the palate. Very rich and flavorful with a long aftertaste over 10 seconds and expansive flavors. Silky texture that adds to the enjoyment of the wine. Of two dozen wines I tasted this evening only 3 others as good. Should continue to evolve & shine for years.

  • Tasted at the UGC less than a week after tasting this at the chateau with a repeat star performance. An enveloping blackberry, cassis, black liquorice nose, developing an inky character on the palate. So clean, deep, and pure - so substantive but muscular, well-proportioned. A classic in the making. 95-96 (+?)

  • This has unfurled beautifully since I last tasted it (when I under-rated it), with a large-scaled, intense, blackberry and cassis nose, impressively cool and deep. This is so potent yet perfectly poised on the palate. The finish lasts forever. Tasted at the chateau. 95-96 points

  • (85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.5% Alkohol) Tiefgründig, nobel, dunkelfruchtig, Cassis, Brombeeren, Tee, Teer, Veilchen, top komplex. Muss reifen. 2030-2050+. (Verkostet am 8. November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch

  • At a tasting of recently bottled 2020s. Wine of the evening for me. Just fabulous huge nose really took me by surprise. Medium to heavy weight of fruit. Soft yet structured. Huge finish. I wrote 'got to have' and was very pleased when I got home to find I'd already ordered a half case en primeur. I normally rate young wine a little lower than the experts but this is the second year in a row I've made an exception for Barton. I really should have tried the Langoa as well. Also the second year in a row I've scored Barton a shade higher than Poyferré despite being much the cheaper wine. Barton has always been good value; this year its stunning value.

  • Arvi Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Bordeaux 2020 Arrivage tasting. Key observations: 1/ Tannins were generally soft and well-integrated, but still left room for structure, 2/ fruit generally ripe and well-defined, no over-extraction, 3/ all appellation were showing great, but if I had to pick out then it would be Paulliac, 4/ top wines were Petit Village (completely unexpected, 97) and Lynch Bages (96).

    Tasting note:
Dark cherry and black currant fruit, layering graphite, spice and dried herbal notes on top. The palate leans to the acidity side of things. Tannins are soft but maybe just a tad unripe. Compared to Poyferré, this was the more opulent wine. But on balance another strong Barton – you just can’t go wrong with this one.

Toll! 95-97

  • 95-97 vvPunkte (85.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, 13.5% Alkohol) Deutlich vom Ausbau geprägt, tiefgründig, dunklelfruchtig, viel Cassis, feine Röstnoten, sogar etwas grüne Banane, florale Töne, still. 2032-2050+. (April/Mai 2021) vvWine.ch

  • Inky in color, it takes only one sniff to see how much ripe fruit is packed in here. Blackberry, currants, smoky cherries, tobacco leaf, cedar, flowers and creme de cassis aromas come on strong. The wine is full-bodied, bold, powerful, tannic, balanced and fresh. The palate filling finish is long, energetic, rich and expansive. This is a superb vintage of Leoville Barton that will need at least a decade in the cellar and will age and evolve for another 2-3 decades after that. 95-97

  • Tasting through some 2020 EP samples with local merchants, so only short impressions. In general the vintage is ripe and plush but not excessive. The right bank examples were sometimes marked by high alcohol. Some of the lesser know Crus from Medoc on the other hand benefited nicely from the sun. TN: This showed very well, structured, brooding, lots of fresh dark fruit, with pine notes. Good tannic core and freshness. Will be a solid wine 94-95

  • Airoldi - Bordeaux En Primeur 2020 (Quay Restaurant, International Passenger Terminal, Sydney): Cedar, a slightly meaty note, cream, red over black fruits; currants and plums, very slight herbaceous note, sweet spice. Medium plus intensity acidity. The tannins and fruit vie for attention, the former grainy and drying, the latter a reflection of the nose...after a long and enjoyable tussle the tannins win. Experience tells me there will be great joy here over time.

  • 2020 First Look: The 2020 Leoville Barton is an attractive wine, showing off a pure, deep, blackcurrant and licorice nose. Medium bodied palate with fresh acid and a sneakily long finish. This should develop quite nicely. 93-95 points

  • Probably the best left bank wine I tried along with Pichon Lalande in this enprimeur tasting. Complex nose of dark cherries and berries, red flowers, some leafy elements, vanilla and cedar spice, stone minerality. Deep and serious in the mid palate with vibrant fruit, fresh, mineral, fruity and saline at the same time, long finish. Very good wine. 95-98

  • Impressive colour as always, and excellent intensity throughout. This feels serious, showing rich cassis and pencil lead, there are sweet and fragrant creamy red fruits too.
Very cool on the attack, super definition and expressive notes of black olive, cassis and raspberry. Seriously structured but never firm, this remains cool, fresh, long and featuring some stylish blue/purple fruit notes on the finish.
