Drank as part of the Riesling Study event in Chicago. When I opened this wine a few hours prior to the event, it was soft and round. With air it gained wonderful energy and turned into one of the wines of the night. It was delicate, balanced, and wonderfully energetic. A truly beautiful bottle of wine.

Another bottle and thankfully consistently good, in great shape. Just getting an older Riesling nose and with nice retrained sweetness that allows it to be used with savoury dishes quite easily. Good acidity, fruit and mouth coating sweetness. Excellent.

Tasted blind, this wine had a medium yellow center and clear rims. The medium+ intensity nose emanated white flowers, almond paste, pear, lemon, petroleum jelly, and minerals.
In the mouth, this wine was gorgeously balanced with ripe fruit, noteworthy integrated acidity, and excellent length. The wine felt seamless.
While this wine has entered it drinking phase, it is still young and will age for 10+ years easily. This bottle was decanted for 7 hours before the tasting allowing its greatness to be revealed. Clearly, this bottle offers a stunning QPR.

Interesting nose identified as blackcurrant leaf. More blackcurrant on the palate, but this is immensely rich and juicy, like a mouthwatering fruitella sweet. There's a touch of tertiary dustiness to it, but this adds interest rather than evidences the bottle is flawed or needs drinking up.
Medium-deeper golden color. Superb notes of apricot jam, some spiced notes, also some lactic notes and honey. It‘s medium bodied, with superb acidity (pretty high), some sweetness, minerality and plenty of tension. Good length. A superb aged Auslese from this excellent producer.

Brilliant Riesling. This has a light golden color with a nose of orchard fruits and significant petrol. The palate is complex with ripe, deep fruit, slate, and a super-long finish. Impressive balance. I wish I had more.

Deep golden coloured with no orange hue. Intense and complex nose of apricots, quince, slate, lemon, smoke, peach and lime. Same on the palate, that is poised with nearly fully integrated sweetnesss and balancing and refreshing acidity and possesses nice lenght. This was cellared under perfect conditions since release. The wine is going to hold through for another one or two decades but it has to be recorked then since the cork of this bottle was nearly fully soaked. Not perfectly stored examples, from auctions or so could be past its prime. 5/14/17/10

What a joy to come across a well aged version of this beauty. And in all fairness we kind of prefer the lighter white capsule to the heavier and richer gold caps. Fresh still, bright, energetic, light petrolly, toffee touches. Very giving on the palate too, nice complex side, good length and almost effortless and not heavy at all. Very good once again! 93-94

AP #2. Deep orange color. Lots of dried orange and baked apple fruit. Plenty of petrol. On day 1, a little acidic and drying out. Significantly improved on day 2 -- the fruit fleshed out, the petrol faded, it showed more layers and slatey complexity. Give this plenty of air.

9th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, previous notes since 2000 fine or better, pale with golden tinge; attractive nose, some honey, kerosene, stone and flowers; light/medium, very long, persistent, concentrated and complex, fully mature but no rush. VF (18.5).

Really needed an hour of air to come into itself. Then this lovely Riesling has now turned the corner into maturity with delicious flavors of petrol, decayed green apples and orange blossom. There is a bit of sweetness left here but it's almost in the backround and the acidity is still prevalent and keeps the wine succulent and fresh if rounder and softer than in the past. Finishes so complex and satisfying with smoky mineral notes. Even the regular bottling of these wines ages so beautifully and the price-to-quality ratio on these wines remains a silly bargain to this day.

Casual Wine Dinner (Grand Sichuan at St. Marks, New York City): Attractive full nose is complex with aged white fruit, honey and vanillin notes. Palate is just rocking -- complex with a prism of aged fruit, honey and mineral flavors. Effortless balance and precision, that only comes with age. Lively and fresh. Great stuff.

AP #11. 90 JJ Prum? SIR YES SIR! This poured with some color - medium gold-orange and showed baked apple, caramel, smoky, spice, deep with a bit of citrus (the 90 acidity). Brighter on the palate with red apple, spice, golden delicious - good acidity and minerality. Zingy with apple and spice on the finish. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5-5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17-17.5/20.

Nanda does Grand Sichuan (St. Marks Place Grand Sich, NY): After two bottles from the same lot that were rather advanced and tired, this was a very pleasant surprise. A much fresher showing more in line with what I expect from Prüm with lots of ripe orchard fruit and floral notes accented with mature smoky, burnished, and petrol notes. There's a fair bit of sweetness here on the palate, but it's nicely balanced by the acids beneath. Very nice.

HDH auction tasting at Tru; 5/13/2016-5/14/2016 (Chicago, IL): #11-91, 7.5%. Of the same provenance as previous (obviously I am more tolerant of the advanced state of these bottles than Salil is). Advanced, but still very enjoyable and drinkable. This shows a pretty dark colour, but there's not much oxidation here. Quite good density again, and despite the colour, there's no botrytis here. Some tasty stone fruit flavour, with a touch of sweet fruit as well. Lovely acidity and a nice dose of minerality too, but I just can't help but think that this could have been so much better if it had been treated better in its youth.

Another heat damaged bottle from the same ex-Sotheby's Aulden cellars lot. Again a very dark colour, with sweet citrus and peachy fruit framed by more advanced petrol, honeyed, and burnished notes. At first it's enjoyable in the manner of a much older wine (Marco and I both thought this resembled an Auslese from the 60s), though certainly not showing the depth or power of a pristine Prum Auslese - but with more air it falls apart and feels thin and hollow on the midpalate.

#11-91, 7.5% abv. Ex-auction, ex-Sotheby's Aulden Cellars, of the same provenance as the bottle from Salil below. Deteriorated and super-crumbly cork, but I managed to extract most of it with a bit of help from the spirit of MacGyver. Somewhat concerning golden colour -- this was about as dark as a Sauternes, but there wasn't lots of botrytis. But what about the wine itself? There's a lot of lovely tertiary notes with some sweet yellow fruit and a fair bit of petrol. The palate has a lot of those same characteristics. This is actually quite complex and enjoyable -- the brown sugar elements are quite nice, and play very nicely with the acids. While this isn't a bad bottle of riesling by any means, it lacks a lot of the freshness that ought to be still present in a well-kept bottle, and I'd have guessed this was from a ripe, but low-botrytis year in the 70s or 80s if served to me blind.

Pristine bottles of this ought to be superb. This unfortunately wasn't - an auction purchase that was very advanced both in colour and flavour, and felt hollow on the palate despite its pretty floral and honeyed aromatics. Consensus was badly heat damaged. I hope my others will show better.

Likely a faulty (heat damaged) bottle. Medium copper color. Fairly pronounced nose of stone fruit, florals, and some tropical fruit. Very rich and explosive attack of apricot and sweet orange. Honeyed sweetness over a good dose of acidity. Smoky. Advanced, lacking some freshness. Then, the wine falls apart, hollowing out into the mid-palate with very little finish. Sad.

The 1990 Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese is in a superb place, bursting from the glass with a very complex and appealing bouquet of grilled apricot, honeysuckle, yellow plums and pineapple; as the wine opened up, the smoky apricot aromas that I identify with botrytis became more and more integrated, complemented by lovely herb and honeysuckle tones. On the palate, the wine is three-dimensional, concentrated and very fresh and bright—impeccably balanced. Great juice.

Summer cabin weekend; 8/8/2014-8/9/2014 (Cleveland, GA): Not decanted. Tremendous wine at a good point of maturity, and much better than the bottle from last month which was certainly not representative of the best this wine can offer. This cork was easily extracted and the wine immediately showed plenty of honeyed tangerine, inflatable beach ball, crystallized brown sugar, and exotic papaya and pineapple. These notes carried over to a viscous, concentrated palate with a level of fresh acidity that seemed several years younger than the wine's 24 years. Drink now-2020.

Nose is surprisinlgy fresh for its age with apricot marmelade, pineapple, floral nuances and some citrus fruit. Mouth is round, medium bodied at most with very light feel. Quite refreshing. To drink on its own I presume because such an elegant wine cannot be paired with anything witout being overwhelmed. Ok, this is the basic Auslese cuvee from J.J. but I was expecting a little bit more...

Eclectic mixture tasted blind (Medlar, Chelsea, London): Peaches and apricots, full, hot and dry, so guessed it was something from the south of France. I enjoyed this, and once you know what it is one can detect the riesling character. But unrecognisable from the last time I had this.

Ian S's Blind at The Medlar (The Medlar, London): Mid gold. Avocado and cabbage on the nose, most curious. Very soft on palate, no obvious acidity. Riesling apparently though I wouldn't have guessed. Mid 70's maybe? What, Prum 90. No! Very advanced and really not correct. (**)*

Ahhhhh.... Still very youthful, this typical Wehlener Sonnenuhr displays the pronouced Riesling acidity we all love and combines this with the creaminess and petrol associated with ageing Mosel Riesling. I have had J. J. Prum Rieslings from the 1970s and 80s, and I look forward to my remaining bottles of this wine ageing graefully for a few more years. This wine will just keep going and going and going. A delight!

Yum. Vivid straw gold color. Still a baby. Explosive nose of coconut, caramel, baked apple, almond cookies, plus a hint of the usual remaining sulphur from the SO2 treatment. Creamy texture and a narrow spine of acid, typical of the '90 vintage. Finishes long. I could drink this every single day, but alas, this was bottle #4 of five.

German wine tasting (Martins office): Amber golden color. Great, intense nose with notes of brown sugar, mango, coconut and caramel. On the palate it is very inviting and easy drinking while at the same time possessing the complexity to attract ones full attention to marvel over this. Delicious sweet fruit, syrupy texture and honey notes. The underlying powerful acidity makes this dance over the palate.

Drunk from a magnum. Healthy medium yellow for its age. A strange candy corn smell cleared quickly to reveal a melange of petrol, tangerine, lemon peel, and yellow apple. Light weight with great acidity and a low level of sweetness for an Auslese, this dances. In marvelous shape from this format.

Year end blindtasting: Yellow golden color. The nose is dominated by gasoline and hints of burned rubber. Honeyed mouthfeel and an apparent sweetness lingers on forever. Fat and complex, with elegant and feminine fruit first. The midpalate is, however, dominated by burned rubber that sticks on the finish.

The color of honey. Great nose of petrol, honey, old apples and straw. What a gorgeous wine that is a pure counter-balance between ripe, honeyed fruit and mouthwatering spicy acidity. In middle age but really strutting its stuff now with wonderful flavors of tart, spiced apples, petrol, honey and minerals and a fair bit of sweetness but it's not cloying at all. Perfectly matched with a grilled veal chop in brown sauce. This wine was great young, puzzling after 10 years and is now emerging into something utterly unique and delicious.

Pre-'90 Chateauneuf in Seattle (Kaspars): Gasoline (not diesel) on the nose. On the palate, delightful honey-drizzled pears (the honey aspect is almost like a botrytis character and is mostly on the finish). Narrower than the '76 and perhaps a little closed at this time. This is a wine that never fails to impress, and last night’s showing was no exception. The color has become more golden, and wine is starting to develop some secondary flavors of honey and nuts. It’s in perfect balance, has a pleasant but not cloying sweetness and viscosity, and covers the entire spectrum from attack to long finish. This could be an A-plus in the making, if it loses an off-putting fizz that seems odd in an 11-year-old wine. At what point is this simply considered a flaw?

Impossible cork to extract. Rubber/petroleum nose, yellow fruit, subtle tropical notes. Drying palate, lean, good acidity but overall rather plain. Hoping this was just a subpar bottle.

Nose: Mint leaves and yellow plums with a lot of vanilla.
Palate: Underplayed and slightly watery. Yellow plums and a little pineapple. Quite light and fresh but perhaps a little singular.

Off the list at Lotus of Siam in Vegas. A complex, medium bodied melange of dried tropical fruits, candied pears, minerals and petrol. Doubtful this will improve any further, in fact this bottle's best days were likely a few years back.

Apricot, hint of kero. Juicy fruit and nicely balanced acidity. Long long finish. Lovely drop but slightly less multi-faceted than might be expected.

Dinner with Tanglenet & the Napa crew (Restaurant Cuvee, Napa): Pale yellow color. Subtle petrol aromas along with apple and floral tones. The palate is rich and viscous, loaded with fruit and slightly honeyed. Long finish. Still on the young side, but really damn tasty and will only improve.

Weakest performance yet. Fruit has softened considerably and acid provides decent balance and a granny smith flavor. Seems a little flat. Long finish.

Rich golden color. Cork is moldy and wet all the way through. Still tastes youthful with some tart green apples drizzled with honey. Very nice but not the best showing I've had.

Not quite as rich as the one I had earlier in the year but still very tastey. Don't serve too cold. Cellar temperature (57) is probably the best.

Really lovely, textbook Mosel. Petrol on the nose, interesting and inviting. Rich mouthfeel, and flavors of apple/pear, baked apples, and cinnamon. Very well balanced, somewhat sweet, but not overly so, this is a wine to savor for its richness and complexity. Jim's rating: Yum!

Should be excllent and has lots more time left.

It's got it all - golden shower in color with a healthy amount of fruit including peaches and pears, grapes, and some honey. Its clean and focused and gets my FULL attention. The acidity is just right and it balances the entire wine out into a smooth, round brilliant star at the table. Thank you Andy for sharing the wealth. The finish is still going in my mind...
